Spring exception translation isn't working with JPA - java

My dao class com.myapp.dao.hibernate.XyzDaoImpl is annotated with #Repository
#Repository
public class UserDaoImpl extends GenericDaoJpa implements UserDao {
...
#Override
public void saveUser(User user) throws Exception{
entityManager.persist(user);
}
...
}
My app-data.xml is as follow:
<bean id="dataSource" class="org.apache.commons.dbcp.BasicDataSource">
<property name="driverClassName" value="${db.driver}" />
<property name="url" value="${db.url}" />
<property name="username" value="${db.username}" />
<property name="password" value="${db.password}" />
<property name="initialSize" value="5" />
<property name="maxActive" value="0" />
</bean>
<!-- JPA Entity Manager Factory -->
<bean id="entityManagerFactory" class="org.springframework.orm.jpa.LocalContainerEntityManagerFactoryBean"
p:dataSource-ref="dataSource" p:jpaDialect-ref="jpaDialect"
p:jpaVendorAdapter-ref="jpaVendorAdapter"
/>
<bean name="jpaDialect" class="org.springframework.orm.jpa.vendor.HibernateJpaDialect">
</bean>
<bean name="jpaVendorAdapter" class="org.springframework.orm.jpa.vendor.HibernateJpaVendorAdapter">
<property name="databasePlatform" value="org.hibernate.dialect.MySQL5InnoDBDialect"></property>
</bean>
<!-- detect les #persistentContext in dao -->
<bean class="org.springframework.orm.jpa.support.PersistenceAnnotationBeanPostProcessor" />
<!-- This will ensure that hibernate or jpa exceptions are automatically translated into
Spring's generic DataAccessException hierarchy -->
<bean class="org.springframework.dao.annotation.PersistenceExceptionTranslationPostProcessor"/>
<bean id="defaultLobHandler" class="org.springframework.jdbc.support.lob.DefaultLobHandler" />
<!-- Transaction Config -->
<bean id="txManager" class="org.springframework.orm.jpa.JpaTransactionManager"
p:entityManagerFactory-ref="entityManagerFactory"/>
<context:component-scan base-package="com.myapp.dao.hibernate" />
<tx:annotation-driven transaction-manager="txManager" />
Now, in my jUnit test method, I deliberately insert a duplicate object and I got javax.persistence.PersistenceException instead of a spring exception.
#Test public void testSaveUser() {
String login = "duplicateLogin";
User user = new User();
user.setLogin(login);
user.setPasswd("pass");
InformationBean rep = ms.saveUser(user);
assertEquals(Constants.REPLY_403, rep);
System.out.println("user was not saved "+user);
}
#Service
public class MessagingService{
...
#Transactional(propagation=Propagation.REQUIRED)
public InformationBean saveUser(User user) {
InformationBean info ;
try {
userDao.saveUser(user);
info = Constants.REPLY_200;
}catch(DataIntegrityViolationException ex) {
logger.warn("login already used.");
info = Constants.REPLY_403;
}catch(ConstraintViolationException cve) {
logger.warn("login already used.");
info = Constants.REPLY_403;
}
catch(Exception e) {
logger.error("Oups error",e);
info = Constants.REPLY_500;
}
return info;
}
...
}

EDIT1: After removing the throws Exception from the saveUser() DAO method, it seems that Spring exception translation is working. My service method catchs DataIntegrityViolationException and return normally. However, the test method doesn't get the return but instead get an exception: TransactionSystemException. How can I avoid such unwanted exception that breaks everything?
Edit2:
Spring exception translation was working fine, the problem comes from JPA/EntityManager.
See the complete story and how I managed to solve it: http://tinyurl.com/439dmul

Regarding your latter question about TransactionSystemException: this exception was thrown when exiting #Transactional method in order to indicate that transaction had been rolled back.
If you want to reliably catch constraint violations, you need to do it around transaction, not inside it. For example, by using programmatic transaction demarcation inside saveUser() method instead of #Transactional, or by adding try-catch clause to the top-level method.

JPA connection closed with EntityManager

Please excuse the possible improper formatting of this post as I have never posted here before. I have a Spring MVC web service running that calls into several DAO's that use JPA/hibernate to interact with a SQL Server database. The connection to the database seems to get closed after the web service has been running for a while.
An example of one of the DAO classes is the following:
#Repository
public class OceanClientDaoImpl {
// Create entity manager objects that will talk to the database
private EntityManagerFactory entityManagerFactory;
/**
* Load all clients in the database. Return as ClientLight objects.
*
* #return List of ClientLight objects.
*/
public List<Client> loadClients()
{
EntityManager entityManager = entityManagerFactory.createEntityManager();
entityManager.getTransaction().begin();
List<?> clients =
entityManager.createNativeQuery("select id, clientname, industry, logo, slug from client",
Client.class).getResultList();
entityManager.getTransaction().commit();
entityManager.close();
return Client.getCheckedList(clients);
}
}
The entityManagerFactory is injected via spring in the following way:
<bean id="dataSource" class="org.apache.tomcat.jdbc.pool.DataSource">
<property name="driverClassName" value="com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDriver" />
<property name="url" value="url" />
<property name="username" value="user" />
<property name="password" value="pw" />
</bean>
<bean
class="org.springframework.orm.jpa.LocalContainerEntityManagerFactoryBean"
id="entityManagerFactory">
<property name="dataSource" ref="dataSource" />
</bean>
<context:component-scan base-package="com.theocean.dao">
<context:include-filter type="annotation"
expression="org.springframework.stereotype.Repository" />
</context:component-scan>
<bean class="org.springframework.orm.jpa.JpaTransactionManager"
id="transactionManager">
<property name="entityManagerFactory" ref="entityManagerFactory" />
</bean>
<bean id="oceanClientDaoImpl" class="com.theocean.dao.OceanClientDaoImpl">
<property name="entityManagerFactory" ref="entityManagerFactory"/>
</bean>
This all works fine when I first bring up the application. The application server is Tomcat. But, after the application is running for a while, requests to the server start receiving this error:
> SEVERE: Servlet.service() for servlet [spring] in context with path [/OceanWebService] threw exception [Request processing failed; nested exception is javax.persistence.PersistenceException: org.hibernate.TransactionException: JDBC begin failed: ] with root cause

So, the connection is being closed. Obviously something is wrong with the implementation whether it be the injection method or the method for handling errors, etc. So, the question is - What is the proper way to do this? How can I avoid the connection closed error? Thanks much in advance.
I think what could be happening is that some of the DAO's are leaving database transactions open when an error occurs.
The example DAO above is doing programmatic management of the database transaction, but does not handle the rollback scenario. This is an example of a DAO implementation that would do so:
MyService {
private EntityManagerFactory emf;
public void myMethod() {
EntityManager em = emf.createEntityManager();
EntityTransaction tx = em.getTransaction();
MyDaoA myDaoA = new MyDaoA(em);
MyDaoB myDaoB = new MyDaoB(em);
try {
tx.begin();
myDaoA.doSomething();
myDaoB.doSomething();
tx.commit();
} catch(Exception e) {
tx.rollback();
}
}
}
All DAOs that do programmatic transaction management should use this pattern, otherwise sooner or later a transaction will not be rolled back and this could cause problems.
A much more frequent and less error prone way of implementing DAOs is to inject directly only an entity manager:
MyService {
#PersistenceContext
private EntityManager em;
#Autowired
private MyDaoA myDaoA;
#Autowired
private MyDaoB myDaoB;
#Transactional
public void myMethod() {
myDaoA.doSomething();
myDaoB.doSomething();
}
}
Injecting the EntityManagerFactory and doing manual transaction management should be reserved for exceptional cases, and the use of #Transactional be used by default.
I would say problem is with Connection pooling , so you can use c3p0 connection pooling library for fixing your problem, but you should be very carefull with connection pool properties.
Actually lot of ways you can do, I am giving you same code for reference. It might help.
Step 1: persistence.xml
<!-- c3p0 properties -->
<!-- Determines how many connections at a time c3p0 will try to acquire when the pool is exhausted -->
<property name="hibernate.c3p0.acquire_increment" value="1"/>
<!-- If this is a number greater than 0,
c3p0 will test all idle, pooled but unchecked-out connections, every this number of seconds -->
<property name="hibernate.c3p0.idle_test_period" value="60"/>
<property name="hibernate.c3p0.max_size" value="20"/>
<property name="hibernate.c3p0.max_statements" value="50"/>
<property name="hibernate.c3p0.min_size" value="5"/>
<property name="hibernate.connection.provider_class" value="org.hibernate.connection.C3P0ConnectionProvider" />
Step 2: And then we create c3p0.properties under src/main/resources/META-INF with following properties
c3p0.testConnectionOnCheckout=true
c3p0.preferredTestQuery=SELECT 1;
Step 3: You need to configure data source
<bean id="myJdbcDataSource" class="com.mchange.v2.c3p0.ComboPooledDataSource"
destroy-method="close">
<!-- Connection properties -->
<property name="driverClass" value="$DS{database.class}" />
<property name="jdbcUrl" value="$DS{database.url}" />
<property name="user" value="$DS{database.username}" />
<property name="password" value="$DS{database.password}" />
<bean/>

How to solve org.hibernate.StaleObjectStateException when copying data from one database to another?

I am trying to copy data from one database to another. All is working fine, until one of the rows in the source database is modified (stack trace below) . Adding new rows to destination database works as expected.
I have a context file for each database connection (mysql and hsqldb) consisting of the following beans:
<bean id="mysqlDataSource" class="org.springframework.jdbc.datasource.DriverManagerDataSource">
<property name="driverClassName" value="${mysql.driver}" />
<property name="url" value="${mysql.url}" />
<property name="username" value="${mysql.username}" />
<property name="password" value="${mysql.password}" />
</bean>
<bean id="mysqlTransactionManager" class="org.springframework.orm.jpa.JpaTransactionManager">
<property name="entityManagerFactory" ref="mysqlEntityManagerFactory" />
<property name="dataSource" ref="mysqlDataSource" />
</bean>
<bean id="mysqlEntityManagerFactory" class="org.springframework.orm.jpa.LocalContainerEntityManagerFactoryBean">
<property name="dataSource" ref="mysqlDataSource" />
<property name="jpaVendorAdapter" ref="mysqlVendorAdaptor" />
<property name="packagesToScan" value="my.packages.to.scan"/>
</bean>
<bean id="mysqlEntityManager" class="org.springframework.orm.jpa.support.SharedEntityManagerBean">
<property name="entityManagerFactory" ref="mysqlEntityManagerFactory"/>
</bean>
<bean id="mysqlVendorAdaptor" class="org.springframework.orm.jpa.vendor.HibernateJpaVendorAdapter" >
<property name="showSql" value="true" />
<property name="generateDdl" value="true" />
<property name="databasePlatform" value="${mysql.dialect}" />
</bean>
In my #Service I create a JpaRepository for each database connection:
#Autowired
private EntityManager hsqldbEntityManager;
#Autowired
private EntityManager mysqlEntityManager;
private MyRepository hsqldbDao;
private MyRepository mysqlDao;
public void init() {
hsqldbDao = new JpaRepositoryFactory(hsqldbEntityManager).getRepository(MyRepository.class);
mysqlDao = new JpaRepositoryFactory(mysqlEntityManager).getRepository(MyRepository.class);
}
MyRepository is very simple:
public interface MyRepository extends JpaRepository<MyClass, byte[]>{ }
I am wiring 2 service methods together using Spring Integration. The service methods are as follows:
#Transactional("mysqlTransactionManager")
public List<MyClass> findAll() {
List<MyClass> list= mysqlDao.findAll();
return list;
}
#Transactional("hsqldbTransactionManager")
public void persist(List<MyClass> list) {
hsqldbDao.save(list);
hsqldbDao.flush();
}
I have tried detaching the list from both EntityManagers and deep cloning the list before the save, with the same error. Therefore I think it has something to do with the way I have configured the transactions/entitymanagers.
Any help appreciated.

You have optimistic locking configured on your entities, using an #Version annotated field. The principle of optimistic locking is to only allow an update of a row if the version stored in the row has the same value as the one stored in the entity being merged. Otherwise, the exception you get is thrown.
So, if you want to bypass this check, you'll have to get the version from the entity to update, copy it to the detached entity being merged (as if you loaded this entity from the target database), and then merge the entity.
I was stuck in similar situation and my steps that helped me were:
Commented out the #version annotation from my entity's column
And created column update and create to keep the track of last updated time.
Code:
public class AuditEntity implements Serializable {
private Date created;
// #Version
private Date updated;
public Date getCreated() {
return created;
}
public void setCreated(Date created) {
this.created = created;
}
public Date getUpdated() {
return updated;
}
public void setUpdated(Date updated) {
this.updated = updated;
}
#PrePersist
private void onCreate() {
setCreated(Date.now());
setUpdated(Date.now());
}
#PostUpdate
private void onUpdate() {
setUpdated(Date.now());
}
}

JPA -Hibernate tuorial: Explicit persistence provider error-Could not create Configuration

I am trying to learn JPA- Hibernate with a very simple example mentioned at this site
https://schuchert.wikispaces.com/JPA+Tutorial+1+-+Getting+Started
(I have tried alternate links as well but all ended up with same problem)
Before I describe my example in brief here I have listed the important exceptions-
Explicit persistence provider error(s) occurred for "examplePersistenceUnit" after trying the following discovered implementations: org.hibernate.ejb.HibernatePersistence from provider: org.hibernate.ejb.HibernatePersistence
Caused by: org.hibernate.HibernateException: Unable to build the default ValidatorFactory
Caused by: javax.validation.ValidationException: Could not create Configuration.
at javax.validation.Validation$GenericBootstrapImpl.configure(Validation.java:175)
Caused by: java.lang.IndexOutOfBoundsException: Index: 0, Size: 0
configuration of project is as follows
persistence.xml {inside src folder directory META-INF}
<persistence xmlns="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/persistence"
xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
xsi:schemaLocation="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/persistence http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/persistence/persistence_2_0.xsd"
version="2.0">
<persistence-unit name="examplePersistenceUnit"
transaction-type="RESOURCE_LOCAL">
<properties>
<property name="hibernate.show_sql" value="false" />
<property name="hibernate.format_sql" value="false" />
<property name="hibernate.connection.driver_class"
value="org.hsqldb.jdbcDriver" />
<property name="hibernate.connection.url"
value="jdbc:hsqldb:mem:mem:aname" />
<property name="hibernate.connection.username" value="sa" />
<property name="hibernate.dialect"
value="org.hibernate.dialect.HSQLDialect" />
<property name="hibernate.hbm2ddl.auto" value="create" />
</properties>
</persistence-unit>
</persistence>
and then I have a simple junit class which does the following
#Before
public void init(){
BasicConfigurator.configure();
Logger.getLogger("org").setLevel(Level.TRACE);
emf= Persistence.createEntityManagerFactory("examplePersistenceUnit");
em = emf.createEntityManager();
}
Can any one please help me in resolving this I tried to search on forums and debugged it with decompiler but is of no use

Is the Hibernate validator in your classpath?
If you are using Maven, just add the dependency for the respective Hibernate version ().

No bean named 'transactionManager' is defined

I have configured two persistent units with the entity managers set up as show below:
<bean id="liveEntityManagerFactory"
class="org.springframework.orm.jpa.LocalContainerEntityManagerFactoryBean"
p:dataSource-ref="LiveDataSource">
<property name="persistenceUnitName" value="LivePersistenceUnit" />
</bean>
<bean id="archiveEntityManagerFactory"
class="org.springframework.orm.jpa.LocalContainerEntityManagerFactoryBean"
p:dataSource-ref="ArchiveDataSource">
<property name="persistenceUnitName" value="ArchivePersistenceUnit" />
</bean>
I then configured the transaction managers as
<bean id="LiveTransactionManager"
class="org.springframework.orm.jpa.JpaTransactionManager"
p:entityManagerFactory-ref="liveEntityManagerFactory"/>
<bean id="ArchiveTransactionManager"
class="org.springframework.orm.jpa.JpaTransactionManager"
p:entityManagerFactory-ref="archiveEntityManagerFactory"/>
I originally had just one configured and it was called "transactionManager". Addint an additional persistent unit seems to generate an error.
One thing i dont understand, if i configured two persistent units (each for a separate database) do i also need to configure an individual entity manager and a transaction manager for each datasource?
The error that i get is shown below: (I have search all file and i cant find anywhere where there is a reference for "transactionManager")

I am using Spring with Jpa/Hibernate.
Thanks
The default value for the transaction-manager attribute is transaction-manager. In your case, you should specify which transaction manager you want to use per method or service like this:
#Service
#Transactional(value="LiveTransactionManager")
class someClass...
or
#Transactional(value="ArchiveTransactionManager")
public void someMethod
Actually, there is a way to use named TransactionManager with Spring Data JPA. This works for me:
<bean id="myTransactionManager" class="org.springframework.orm.jpa.JpaTransactionManager">
<property name="entityManagerFactory" ref="myEntityManagerFactory" />
</bean>
<tx:annotation-driven transaction-manager="myTransactionManager"/>
<jpa:repositories base-package="com.xxx.yyy" entity-manager-factory-ref="myEntityManagerFactory" transaction-manager-ref="myTransactionManager">
</jpa:repositories>
I use java configuration and specifying the transactionManagerRef was solution for me:
#Configuration
#EnableTransactionManagement
#EnableJpaRepositories(
entityManagerFactoryRef = "myCustomEntityManagerFactory",
basePackages = {"ua.demitt.other.path.to.repos"},
transactionManagerRef = "myCustomTransactionManager" )
In your #Configuration file, if this is your dataSource:
#Bean(name = "dataSource")
public DataSource getDataSource() {
return DataSourceBuilder
.create()
.username(username)
.password(password)
.url(url)
.build();
}
this would be your transaction manager bean:
#Bean(name = "DataSourceTransactionManager")
public DataSourceTransactionManager getDataSourceTransactionManager() {
return new DataSourceTransactionManager(getDataSource());
}
Then annotate the service method you would like to be transactional:
#Transactional(transactionManager = "DataSourceTransactionManager", timeout = 60, rollbackFor = { Exception.class})

It means DB SQL server is running out of connections. Server has a configuration parameter that specifies how maximum allowed connections.
This usually indicates that connections are not being closed. Are you requesting Connection objects from Hibernate in your code?
In short term, you can just increase maximum connections till this problem is fixed.
If you increase the number of connections may fix it but there is still possibility to happen this same exception in future.
Make sure that you have defined <property name="maxIdle" value="1" /> in your database configuration xml file. Also I had this same problem when I defined <property name="maxIdle" value="1" /> it fixed my problem.
<bean id="myDataSource" class="org.apache.commons.dbcp.BasicDataSource"
destroy-method="close">
<property name="driverClassName" value="com.mysql.jdbc.Driver" />
<property name="url" value="jdbc:mysql://localhost/crm" />
<property name="username" value="root" />
<property name="password" value="root" />
<property name="initialSize" value="10" />
<property name="maxActive" value="15" />
<property name="maxWait" value="5000" />
<property name="maxIdle" value="1" />
</bean>
In MySql, check maximum no of concurrent connection using
SHOW VARIABLES LIKE "max_connections";
By default it will be 151 ( 0 - 150). Then change max concurrent connection by
SET GLOBAL max_connections = 250;
This resolved my issue.
In the above Tag this line is important
<property name="maxIdle" value="1" />
will work, as it will allow only one connection for the AJAX or the DB request
