I have an application using Spring-3.2.X and cxf-2.7.5
I'm importing cxf into my spring's app context like so:
<import resource="classpath:META-INF/cxf/cxf.xml" />
<import resource="classpath:cxf.xml" />
However, When I run the tests I end up with the following exception:
java.lang.IllegalStateException: Failed to load ApplicationContext

From reading What causes java.lang.IncompatibleClassChangeError? it looks like IncompatibleClassChangeError - Means I probably have conflicting library versions on my classpath. I can't tell from the stack trace which class/library is being duplicated.
My POM looks like so:

If you're still here, thanks for reading.
What am I doing wrong?
Why won't CXF/Spring start, and how do I fix it?
UPDATE:
After running the debugger the offending class appears to be:
org.apache.cxf.ws.policy.AssertionBuilderRegistryImpl
which resides in cxf-rt-ws-policy-2.7.5
As far as I can tell though that's the only place for that jar and It's only included once.
JHades Update
When I initially ran the report Log4J and Log4J-extras were overlapping, so was
JavaMail-1.5 and geronimo-javamail_1.4_spec. I've resolved those uses.
report results:
>>>> Jar overlap report:
Total number of classes with more than one version: 0
Both Jhades and mvn dependency:tree -Ddetail=true inidicate that cxf-rt-ws-policy is 2.7.5 just like every other cxf jar version.

So I it turns out my IDE intellij-dea was messing up my build.
I thought that since I had maven configured, that it would just be running pure maven, under the hood.
In my IDE I had configured an installed Directory for Axis2-1.6.0 to be used before my maven dependencies. Axis-2 was left over from an OLD version of my application and held duplicates of a lot dependencies including something called Neethi, which I've seen listed else where as a potential source of this error with CXF.

It seems the version of class org.apache.cxf.ws.policy.AssertionBuilderRegistryImpl that is being loaded is invalid.
You can check the WAR to see if there are any duplicate classes using this command (from JHades, a tool I've made), see here for the duplicate classes report:
java -jar jhades-standalone-report.jar path/to/war/webapp.war
The report should give something like this:
>>>> Jar overlap report:
poi-3.5-FINAL-20090928.jar overlaps with poi-3.7-20101029.jar - total overlapping classes: 990
xercesImpl-2.7.0.jar overlaps with xercesImpl-2.9.1.jar - total overlapping classes: 867
xalan-2.6.0.jar overlaps with xalan-2.7.1.jar - total overlapping classes: 711
bcel-5.2.jar overlaps with xalan-2.7.1.jar - total overlapping classes: 361
xml-apis-2.9.1.jar overlaps with xml-apis.jar - total overlapping classes: 301
jasperreports-applet-3.7.1.jar overlaps with jasperreports-javaflow-3.7.1.jar - total overlapping classes: 254
jasperreports-3.7.1.jar overlaps with jasperreports-applet-3.7.1.jar - total overlapping classes: 254
...
Total number of classes with more than one version: 6169
Also it's possible to query the classpath for all versions of the class and for the currently used version:
System.out.println("All versions of AssertionBuilderRegistryImpl:" + getClass().getClassLoader().getResources("org/apache/cxf/ws/policy/AssertionBuilderRegistryImpl.class"));
System.out.println("Currently used version of AssertionBuilderRegistryImpl:" + getClass().getClassLoader().getResource("org/apache/cxf/ws/policy/AssertionBuilderRegistryImpl.class"));
There are a couple of possibilities: either multiple versions exist, and only one is correct. In that case exclude the jars with the wrong versions in maven.
If only one version exists, then it's the wrong one, use mvn dependency:tree -Ddetail=true to find why it's included, and update the pom to load the correct version.

Above are all dependencies jar files which I used in Tomcat 8 and Java 8.
Can anyone suggest me what is the cause and solution for this issue?
tl;dr
To use Java 10, switch to Jersey 2.27 (which is the latest as of this date (10/5/18)).
java.lang.IllegalArgumentException
at jersey.repackaged.org.objectweb.asm.ClassReader.<init>
Jersey repackages asm and puts these class files into the jersey-server jar. Just digging through the jar in my IDE, I looked at the ClassReader constructor (that's what <init> means) to see where IllegalArgumentException is thrown. Note, I'm currently looking at Jersey version 2.25.1
public ClassReader(byte[] b, int off, int len) {
this.b = b;
if (this.readShort(off + 6) > 53) {
throw new IllegalArgumentException();
}
The 53 is the class file version. According to that link, 53 is for Java 9. So it appears Jersey 2.25.1 only supports up to Java 9. So I changed the Jersey dependency version to 2.26, and looked at the ClassReader constructor and it was exactly the same. So I switched to Jersey 2.27, and this is what I saw
public ClassReader(final byte[] b, final int off, final int len) {
this.b = b;
// checks the class version
// added "support" for java 11 compiled classes
if (readShort(off + 6) > Opcodes.V11) {
throw new IllegalArgumentException();
}
Notice the Opcodes.V11 (which I assume is Java 11). So it looks like for Java 10+ support, you must switch to Jersey 2.27, as also mentioned in this related issue
Update
After seeing your pom, you need to make sure you are changing the Jersey version on all your Jersey dependencies. And also you have so many unnecessary dependencies. The following are all you need. Remove anything else that has Jersey in the name.
KEEP THESE
Change to 2.27
<dependency>
<groupId>org.glassfish.jersey.media</groupId>
<artifactId>jersey-media-multipart</artifactId>
<version>2.27</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.glassfish.jersey.containers</groupId>
<artifactId>jersey-container-servlet</artifactId>
<version>2.27</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.glassfish.jersey.media</groupId>
<artifactId>jersey-media-json-jackson</artifactId>
<version>2.27</version>
</dependency>
REMOVE THESE
<dependency>
<groupId>javax.ws.rs</groupId>
<artifactId>javax.ws.rs-api</artifactId>
<version>2.1</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.glassfish.jersey.core</groupId>
<artifactId>jersey-client</artifactId>
<version>2.25</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.glassfish.jersey.core</groupId>
<artifactId>jersey-server</artifactId>
<version>2.25</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.glassfish.jersey.containers</groupId>
<artifactId>jersey-container-servlet-core</artifactId>
<version>2.25</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.glassfish.jersey.media</groupId>
<artifactId>jersey-media-json</artifactId>
<version>2.0-m05</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>javax.ws.rs</groupId>
<artifactId>jsr311-api</artifactId>
<version>1.1.1</version>
</dependency>
ADD EXCLUSION
<dependency>
<groupId>io.swagger</groupId>
<artifactId>swagger-jaxrs</artifactId>
<version>1.5.13</version>
<exclusions>
<exclusion>
<groupId>javax.ws.rs</groupId>
<artifactId>jsr311-api</artifactId>
</exclusion>
</exclusions>
</dependency>
Asides
See the Jersey Migration Guide for some other issues you may face when migrating to version 2.27
The one for sure thing you will need if you are migrating from pre-2.26 is the jersey-hk2 dependency. See this post for why.
<dependency>
<groupId>org.glassfish.jersey.inject</groupId>
<artifactId>jersey-hk2</artifactId>
<version>2.27</version>
</dependency>

java.util.concurrent.ExecutionException: org.apache.catalina.LifecycleException: Failed to start component [StandardEngine[Catalina].StandardHost

I am facing below error while trying to deploy the application on tomcat server. I am deploying the same code from this link: http://krams915.blogspot.in/2010/12/spring-3-mvc-jasper-integration.html without customization yet. I find the same error is reported on stackoverflow, but none of the solution worked for me. Hence decided to report once again considering issue for this source code.Please guide.

You can forcely update your maven
mvn clean install -U
If this procedure fails, then try to it with hard way
find ~/.m2/ -name "*.lastUpdated" | xargs rm
If this procedure also fails, Then try to purge the local repo using the following:
mvn dependency:purge-local-repository
Then make clean and install by this command:
mvn dependency:purge-local-repository clean install

Force maven update
I was able to solve this issue by updating and adding the maven dependencies. When I run the Project, I can see below page and also can download PDF report. I trying to analysed maven conflict which is causing problems with your current maven dependencies.
But you can simply use below below pom.xml and your application will be running fine. The output I can

The reason for your issue is that JBehave as a dependency on FreeMarker (see deps on mvnrepository.com) which causes Spring Boots auto configuration to kick in and configure FreeMarker as your template engine. Basically you do have different options to get rid of this issue
Do what the error states and add spring.freemarker.checkTemplateLocation=false to your application.yml or application.properties to suppress the check for templates location. This still leaves you with the template engine configured
Disable Autoconfiguration for FreeMarker by adding the exclude option to your #SpringBootApplication like this #SpringBootApplication(exclude={FreeMarkerAutoconfiguration.class})
Create the templates folder as expected in resources.
Exclude the transient dependency on your JBehave dependency in your pom.xml as described in the documentation of Maven.
Which of those is the right decision depends on your demand and the application, e.g. if you do not need JBehave's HTML or Mail reporting functionality which uses FreeMarker it is most likely safe to go for option 4, in all other cases I personally would use option 2.
Side notes
You should always scope your dependencies properly, e.g. all of your deps for testing should correctly have a <scope>test</scope> setting as it is the case for the spring-boot-starter-test. That helps to keep the final artifact small.
I don't see a reason for what you'd need the scala dependency in your setup.
logback is the default logging framework in Spring Boot and does not have to be defined. I'm actually also not 100% sure if it is a really good idea to have two logging libs (log4j and logback) in your setup.
Is there a special reason why you not used spring-social-facebook but rather restfb instead? Does not look consistent to me.
Additionally I'm wondering about having spring-data-jpa dependency in as well as the plain spring-boot-starter-jdbc?
In general you defined a lot of your dependency explicitly whereas they are anyhow provided as a transient dependency of other requirements, e.g. hibernate would be automatically brought in by spring-data-jpa.
I personally would go for version 1.3.2 of spring-boot in your parent relationship definition. It will bring in a lot of new functionalities and should be really non-breaking.

I keep on getting java.lang.IllegalAccessError. I cannot fix this anyway possible

I'm trying to deploy my webapp to Google App Engine. It uses spring & maven.
When I deploy the app with "appengine:update", the server loads this message instead of my index.jsp page:
"Error: Server Error
The server encountered an error and could not complete your request.
Please try again in 30 seconds.".
Upon checking the log,
here is what it says:

If someone can please show me what's wrong and help fix my code that would be great. I feel like my brain is gonna explode. I have no idea what to do now.
Thanks.
You have quite a few logging frameworks in your appengine application. But since app engine supports just java.util.logging i suggest you remove
<dependency>
<groupId>org.slf4j</groupId>
<artifactId>slf4j-api</artifactId>
<version>1.7.13</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.slf4j</groupId>
<artifactId>slf4j-log4j12</artifactId>
<version>1.7.13</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>commons-logging</groupId>
<artifactId>commons-logging</artifactId>
<version>1.2</version>
</dependency>
Add just add the java.util.logging "version" of slf4j, like this:
<dependency>
<groupId>org.slf4j</groupId>
<artifactId>slf4j-jdk14</artifactId>
<version>1.7.13</version>
</dependency>
-- edit --
It that doesn't help you can check whether any of your dependencies require a different logging framework with mvn dependency:tree and then exclude the dependency in your pom. You then have to add a transport from whatever logging framework was required to slf4j or java.util.logging. For example i think there is a log4j to slf4j library but i'm not sure of the name.

Incompatible magic value 0

I'm developing java maven project in STS (based on Eclipse Juno 3.8.2) and I'm getting following error:
java.lang.ClassFormatError: Incompatible magic value 0 in class file org/eclipse/jdt/internal/junit4/runner/JUnit4TestReference
I think it have something to do with mixed Java versions, but I'm not able to solve it, probably I missed something.
Full stacktrace is:

I found out, that there is a problem only when I'm trying to run JUnit tests, my project is running fine. I tried to check run configuration and it seems it's ok. I checked project facets too, and everything seems to be ok there too...
Despite having 1.7.0_17 on the command line I think your Eclipse is running on an older version of java. To determine what version of java Eclipse is running on see:
Find out what JVM Eclipse is running on
Then to change the version of java Eclipse is running on see:
http://wiki.eclipse.org/Eclipse.ini#Specifying_the_JVM
Hope that helps.
It seems, that is some general problem with STS (based on Eclipse Juno 3.8.2).
I tried the simplest possible test and it's not working too:
pom.xml

}
and I'm getting same error in STS (3.8.2), while in STS (4.2.2) everything works fine.
same here solved by simply clean and rebuild the project again
in my case this error happened just when i change a super class of the mentioned class;
the class mentioned on my stacktrace is a class in my project not in specific library like yours
org/eclipse/jdt/internal/junit4/runner/JUnit4TestReference
hope that help you
I got this error messages but nothing worked for me. My problem probably is related to the way I move new classes from dev to production. I created the new class on Dev and copied it over to Production, not the .war file, at the end the class owner on tomcat folder was "root", not "tomcat", "chown" to tomcat fixed the problem.
