Hibernate NPE when using function() to call native sql method within jpa - java

I've got the following query which is used within a spring-data repository and runs fine in the jpa console. It has a subselect query which uses jpa's function() to call a native MySQL database method:
select run1.someAttribute1 AS someAttribute1,
run1.someAttribute2 AS someAttribute2,
run1.someAttribute3 AS someAttribute3,
(select
sum(function('timestampdiff', SECOND, run2.runStartTime, run2.runEndTime))
from runTable AS run2
where run2.anotherAttribute1 = run1.anotherAttribute1
and run2.anotherAttribute2 = run1.someAttribute2
and run2.anotherAttribute3 = run1.someAttribute3
) AS runtime,
sum(
case when type(event) = SomeEvent and event.someType = '...' then 1
else 0 end
) AS numberOfSomething1,
sum(
case when type(event) = SomeEvent and event.someType = '...' then 1
else 0 end
) AS numberOfSomething2,
sum(
case when type(event) = SomeEvent and event.someType = '...' then 1
else 0 end
) AS numberOfSomething3,
sum(
case when type(event) = SomeEvent and event.someType = '...' then 1
else 0 end
) AS numberOfSomething4,
sum(
case when type(event) = SomeEvent2 then 1
else 0 end
) AS numberOfSomething5 from runTable AS run1 left join run1.events AS event
group by someAttribute1, someAttribute2, someAttribute3
order by
max(function('right', function('left', someAttribute1, 8), 3)) desc,
someAttribute2 desc,
someAttribute3 desc
The method timestampdiff is registered in my custom MySQLDialect:
public class MySQLDialect extends org.hibernate.dialect.MySQLDialect {
public MySQLDialect() {
super();
registerFunction("timestampdiff", new SQLFunctionTemplate(LongType.INSTANCE, "timestampdiff(?1, ?2, ?3)"));
}
}
A spring boot application uses this repository and starts up without any error. When opening the page which is linked to the repository (through a bean and service layer of course), it loads up and shows the desired result in a datatable.
The problem occurs when I implement any unit (integration) test (i guess through scanning the repository package?!). While the unit test is starting up, Hibernate throws a NullPointerException.

So i debugged into that problem and as you can see in the stacktrace, Hibernate fails during AST building within the method findFunctionReturnType(String functionName, SQLFunction sqlFunction, AST firstArgument) which is located in the SessionFactoryHelper class. That method tries to resolve the argumentType through casting firstArgument to an SqlNode and calling getDataType() on it and finally it returns sqlFunction.getReturnType with that argumentType.
In my case, the NPE occurs when resolving the argumentType from the subselect's sum function. functionName is "sum", sqlFunction is an instance of SumFunction and firstArgument is "function(timestampdiff)" (instance of MethodeNode). When getReturnType(argumentType, ... ) is called on return, argumentType is null because obvoiusly, it cannot be resolved from "function(timestampdiff)", thus causing the NPE.
Question
Is there any way i can use function() together with hibernate in a subselect? Why does it fail in my unit tests while working perfectly in the spring boot application?
EDIT
It appears to only work for me in my spring boot application. One of m coworkers has it also fail for the application startup. There is nothing different from our code and IDE
I've already read about that magic NPE but couldn't find a solution for my problem.

This sounds like a dependency/class loading issue. I'd try the following
make a diff of your dependencies/classpath. If you're using maven use its dependency plugin to print the dependency tree (mvn dependency:tree). Look out for duplicate dependencies and different versions in test and production code. Print out the classpath at runtime and again compare it between test and production.
put a breakpoint in the MySqlDialect to ensure it gets loaded.

Spring 4: method with #Bean is intercepted recursively

I have a Spring 4.3.25.RELEASE based project, where I mostly use Java based configuration and a little bit of XML configuration. The app is run on Java 7 based WebSphere server.
The Java-config is spread across multiple dependencies and subsequent modules #Import those classes.
In one of these #Configuration classes there is a strange phenomenon not occurring in others:
#org.springframework.context.annotation.Configuration
#ComponentScan
#EnableConfigurationProperties({ApplicationProperties.class})
#PropertySource("classpath:application.properties")
public class SpringBaseConfiguration {
#Bean(name = "configuration")
#ConditionalOnMissingBean(Configuration.class)
public Configuration configurationBean(ApplicationProperties properties) {
ConfigurationBean configurationBean = new ConfigurationBean();
configurationBean.setApplicationName(properties.getApplicationName());
configurationBean.setBuildId(properties.getBuildId());
configurationBean.setUmdbProgramId(properties.getUmdbProgramId());
configurationBean.setUmdbSystemId(properties.getUmdbSystemId());
configurationBean.setVersion(properties.getVersion());
configurationBean.setEnv((String) env(properties).getObject());
configurationBean.setServerEnv((String) serverEnv(properties).getObject());
configurationBean.setTrustedOrigin((String) trustedOrigin(properties).getObject());
return configurationBean;
}
#Bean("env")
public JndiObjectFactoryBean env(ApplicationProperties properties) {
return getJndiBean(properties.getEnvName());
}
// ...
public static JndiObjectFactoryBean getJndiBean(String jndiName) {
JndiObjectFactoryBean factoryBean = new JndiObjectFactoryBean();
factoryBean.setJndiName(jndiName);
return factoryBean;
}
}
The method configurationBean is invoked by the container, as it should be. This method, as you can see, invokes the methods env, serverEnv, trustedOrigin. What I'd expect is for these methods to return their respective beans.
Instead, I run into a nasty StackOverflowException, which, after a lot of searching, seems to happen in the org.springframework.context.annotation.ConfigurationClassEnhancer.
When the env method is invoked, the org.springframework.context.annotation.ConfigurationClassEnhancer.BeanMethodInterceptor#intercept intercepts the method invocation.
This method invokes the org.springframework.context.annotation.ConfigurationClassEnhancer.BeanMethodInterceptor#obtainBeanInstanceFromFactory method, which temporarily sets the currentlyInCreation flag of the env bean to false. This is a problem, because before the method would reset the flag to true, it asks the factory to instantiate the env bean.
This factory proceeds to invoke the env method, which gets intercepted again by the same org.springframework.context.annotation.ConfigurationClassEnhancer.BeanMethodInterceptor#intercept method.
But this time, the factoryContainsBean(beanFactory, BeanFactory.FACTORY_BEAN_PREFIX + beanName) &&
factoryContainsBean(beanFactory, beanName) expression becomes true because the currentlyInCreation flag has been set to false, which in turn results in the intercept method to ask the beanFactory to instantiate the been, restarting the infinite interception loop, until a StackOverflowError occurs.
Anyone faced this problem before? How can this be resolved?
PS.: Here is part of the stack trace that I managed to dig out, I do believe this is the most relevant part:

It works fine if I run one test, but if I run all tests I get an error on second and all next test classes
Exception opening port "9092" (port may be in use)
This looks like Spring tries to create application context and initiates bean every time next test class will run, though this conflicts somehow with port opened by itself. How can I run all tests and have this bean working?
Update
As many people mention test classes annotations, I will show them here:
#RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class)
#SpringApplicationConfiguration(IndeedScraper.class)
#TestPropertySource(locations="classpath:test.properties")
I have few #Configuration classes: two database connection/transaction/entity management classes and described here h2Server bean. h2Server bean builder class is stored in src/test/java, while other #Configuration classes in src/main/java

One of the options can be sharing a Spring context between your test classes as described in this integration test tutorial and also pay attention to context caching description in Spring documentation
That is, to share same runtime context to your unit test classes, try to annotate all of your unit tests which need H2 connection as follows:
#RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class)
...
#ContextConfiguration(classes=H2DataBaseTestConfig.class, loader=AnnotationConfigContextLoader.class)
public class SomeServiceTest {
...
Note, that this approach does not rely on SpringBoot integration testing support which is referred in another answer in this thread.
Update
As it seems not obvious, you may need to list all another necessary #Configuration-annotated classes in there like #ContextConfiguration(classes={H2Config.class, MyConfigFromSrcTest.class, MyConfigFromSrcMain.class, ...}, ... to reflect superset of all context pieces which are required by your integration test classes. And resulting context then will be cached by using exact set of those configuration classes as cache key
#Before
public void setUp() {
createTCPConnection();
}
#After
public void endTest() {
closeTCPConnection();
}
#Test
public void firstTest() {
doTest(1);
}
#Test
public void secondTest() {
doTest(2);
}
Then all your running tests are called between before and after. So, the connection it's created once for that class and all Test methods on it

JPA Single Table Inheritance: Not a managed type

I have a Spring Boot application (embedded Tomcat, Thymeleaf template...) using
spring-boot-starter-data-jpa
I use Inheritance strategies with JPA and Hibernate
I have this class:
#Entity
#Table(name="t_alarm_notification")
#Inheritance (strategy = InheritanceType.SINGLE_TABLE)
#DiscriminatorColumn(name= "ALARM_TYPE")
public abstract class AlarmNotification implements Serializable {
..
}
and this other one:
#MappedSuperclass
public class BookAlarmNotification extends AlarmNotification {
/**
*
*/
private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L;
private Book book;
..
}
and this other one
public interface BookAlarmNotificationRepository extends CrudRepository<BookAlarmNotification, Long> {
}
but running an integration test or just starting the String Boot app. I got this error:

In the JPA 2.1 specification document we find in Section 11.1.38 (PDF page 471):
The MappedSuperclass annotation designates a class whose mapping information is applied to the entities that inherit from it. A mapped superclass has no separate table defined for it.
...
A class designated with the MappedSuperclass annotation can be mapped in the same way as an entity except that the mappings will apply only to its subclasses since no table exists for the mapped
superclass itself.
So the problem originates from the fact, that your Entity class AlarmNotification is incorrectly used as a base class for BookAlarmNotification. As noted in the comment of "Abdullah Khan", the correct way of annotating would be:
Annotate the abstract base class AlarmNotification like:
#MappedSuperclass
#Inheritance (strategy = InheritanceType.SINGLE_TABLE)
#DiscriminatorColumn(name= "ALARM_TYPE")
public abstract class AlarmNotification implements Serializable {
//..
}
Use the #Entity annotation for the class that inherit from it:
#Entity
#Table(name="t_book_alarm_notification")
public class BookAlarmNotification extends AlarmNotification {
//..
}
Thus, the UnsatisfiedDependencyException / IllegalArgumentException
Not a managed type: class com.nicinc.persistence.domain.backend.BookAlarmNotification
shouldn't occur any longer as it now exists as managed Entity in your application.
Hope it helps.
#Entity
#Table(name="d_intervenant_tc")
#Inheritance(strategy= InheritanceType.SINGLE_TABLE)
#DiscriminatorColumn(name="Type", discriminatorType=DiscriminatorType.STRING)
public class Intervenant {
}
#Entity
public class Affilie extends Intervenant{
}

Disabling RedisHttpSessionConfiguration in junit tests

I'm using spring-boot and spring-session to build a simple rest api. The production application should use the redis-session implementation, whereas the tests should use the default (non-redis) spring-session.
However when the spring-boot-starter-redis maven dependency is declared in the project, spring-boot will automagically create a org.springframework.session.data.redis.config.annotation.web.http.RedisHttpSessionConfiguration without the #EnableRedisHttpSession annotation being anywhere in the test configuration.
My setup
Application code:
// base session config for both prod/dev and test/ci
public class BaseSessionConfig {
#Bean
public HeaderHttpSessionStrategy sessionStrategy() {
return new HeaderHttpSessionStrategy();
}
}
// enable the redis session only in these profiles
#Configuration
#EnableRedisHttpSession
#Profile({"prod", "dev", "local", "vagrant"})
public class RedisSessionConfig extends BaseSessionConfig {
}
Tests:
#WebIntegrationTest
#RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class)
#SpringApplicationConfiguration(classes = {MyApplication.class, MyTestApplicationConfig.class})
public class AuthenticationResourceTest {
private RestTemplate restTemplate = new TestRestTemplate();
#Test
public void testUnauthenticated() {
HttpHeaders headers = restTemplate.getForEntity("http://localhost:8080/api/session", String.class).getHeaders();
// ...
}
}
// session configuration for the test environments
// no redis enabled
#Configuration
#Profile({"ci", "test"})
public class MyTestApplicationConfig extends BaseSessionConfig {
}
How can i disable the redis session auto-configuration inside the junit tests?

Edit
I figured it out. The reason why the RedisHttpSessionConfig is loaded in tests despite not having the EnableRedisSession annotation on the config is this auto-configuration which comes with spring-boot-starter-web: SessionAutoConfiguration
So in tests, this is the class which needs to be excluded from autoconfiguration:
#WebIntegrationTest
#RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class)
#SpringApplicationConfiguration(classes = TestAppConfig.class)
public class AuthenticationResourceTest {
private RestTemplate restTemplate = new TestRestTemplate();
#Test
public void testUnauthenticated() {
HttpHeaders headers = restTemplate.getForEntity("http://localhost:8080/api/session", String.class).getHeaders();
}
}
#Configuration
#SpringBootApplication(exclude = {SessionAutoConfiguration.class, SessionRedisHttpConfiguration.class})
public class TestAppConfig {
#Configuration
static class SessionConfig extends BaseSessionConfig {
}
}
Use #ActiveProfiles testing annotation to enable certain profiles for test. If you don't activate profiles defined on RedisSessionConfig that configuration shouldn't be loaded.
But also make sure that RedisHttpSessionConfiguration is not loaded by auto-configuration.
Reaction on Comment:
I wasn't sure if Redis has it's auto-configuration class. Looking into Spring Boot, it has. So you need to exclude it during test. Look into this SO thread how to do it.

Why does my ApplicationContext fail to load when I enable web security?

I have a Spring Boot application that I would like to add Spring Security too. So I've added the following configuration, which starts and runs just fine:
#Configuration
#EnableWebSecurity
public class SecurityConfiguration extends WebSecurityConfigurerAdapter {
#Resource
private Environment environment;
#Bean
public PasswordEncoder passwordEncoder(){
return new BCryptPasswordEncoder();
}
#Override
protected void configure(HttpSecurity http) throws Exception {
if(environment.acceptsProfiles("live")) {
http.requiresChannel().anyRequest().requiresSecure();
}
http.csrf().disable();
}
}
The problem is that my functional tests fail to load the application context. All functional tests extend from the following configuration:
#ContextConfiguration(loader = SpringApplicationContextLoader.class, classes = MyConfiguration.class)
#WebAppConfiguration
#IntegrationTest
class ContextInitializer extends GebReportingSpec {
}
When the tests attempts to load the application, it throws the following stack trace:
org.springframework.beans.factory.BeanCreationException: Error creating bean with name 'defaultServletHandlerMapping' defined in class path resource [org/springframework/boot/autoconfigure/web/WebMvcAutoConfiguration$EnableWebMvcConfiguration.class]: Bean instantiation via factory method failed; nested exception is org.springframework.beans.BeanInstantiationException: Failed to instantiate [org.springframework.web.servlet.HandlerMapping]: Factory method 'defaultServletHandlerMapping' threw exception; nested exception is java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: A ServletContext is required to configure default servlet handling

Seems like I need to let the Integration test context loader know about the spring security somehow.
EDIT:
I've narrowed the problem down to a converter that pulls in a PasswordEncoder. Removing the converter and using the PasswordEncoder directly in the controller causes the problem to go away. Also, removing the Security Configuration will allow me to use the Converter just fine.
Here is a link to a repository I made that replicates the issue:
https://github.com/StephenTurley/SpringBootSecurityTest.git
The last commit causes the error. Not sure why I can't use spring converters and Spring security. Any ideas?
I suspect this is an initialization issue that is fixed by adding DelegatingFilterProxy support in Boot 1.3. I sent you a pull request that resolves the issue by updating to Spring Boot 1.3.2.RELEASE. It also resolves a few other dependency issues I was having.
Came across the same problem sometime back and fixed it adding javax.servlet-api and jsp-api in test scope, can you try adding same dependencies, below for reference:
For Maven:
<dependency>
<groupId>javax.servlet</groupId>
<artifactId>javax.servlet-api</artifactId>
<version>3.0.1</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>javax.servlet</groupId>
<artifactId>jsp-api</artifactId>
<version>2.0</version>
</dependency>
For Gradle:
testCompile "javax.servlet:javax.servlet-api:3.0.1"
testCompile "javax.servlet:jsp-api:2.0"
Also make sure you have spring-test dependency in test scope in your classpath.
I think in you application context shoul include the security context, so try to add that in you application context:
#Configuration
#Import({
SecurityConfiguration.class
})
#ComponentScan(basePackages = {
})
public class ApplicationContext {
}
Anothing, I think SecurityConfiguration should be called as SecurityContext.
I may be lacking some context information here but have you tried:
#EnableAutoConfiguration(exclude = { DataSourceAutoConfiguration.class,WebMvcAutoConfiguration.class })
Maybe one of your #Configuration classes is annotated with #EnableWebMvc??
