I have a Spring 4.3.25.RELEASE based project, where I mostly use Java based configuration and a little bit of XML configuration. The app is run on Java 7 based WebSphere server.
The Java-config is spread across multiple dependencies and subsequent modules #Import those classes.
In one of these #Configuration classes there is a strange phenomenon not occurring in others:
#org.springframework.context.annotation.Configuration
#ComponentScan
#EnableConfigurationProperties({ApplicationProperties.class})
#PropertySource("classpath:application.properties")
public class SpringBaseConfiguration {
#Bean(name = "configuration")
#ConditionalOnMissingBean(Configuration.class)
public Configuration configurationBean(ApplicationProperties properties) {
ConfigurationBean configurationBean = new ConfigurationBean();
configurationBean.setApplicationName(properties.getApplicationName());
configurationBean.setBuildId(properties.getBuildId());
configurationBean.setUmdbProgramId(properties.getUmdbProgramId());
configurationBean.setUmdbSystemId(properties.getUmdbSystemId());
configurationBean.setVersion(properties.getVersion());
configurationBean.setEnv((String) env(properties).getObject());
configurationBean.setServerEnv((String) serverEnv(properties).getObject());
configurationBean.setTrustedOrigin((String) trustedOrigin(properties).getObject());
return configurationBean;
}
#Bean("env")
public JndiObjectFactoryBean env(ApplicationProperties properties) {
return getJndiBean(properties.getEnvName());
}
// ...
public static JndiObjectFactoryBean getJndiBean(String jndiName) {
JndiObjectFactoryBean factoryBean = new JndiObjectFactoryBean();
factoryBean.setJndiName(jndiName);
return factoryBean;
}
}
The method configurationBean is invoked by the container, as it should be. This method, as you can see, invokes the methods env, serverEnv, trustedOrigin. What I'd expect is for these methods to return their respective beans.
Instead, I run into a nasty StackOverflowException, which, after a lot of searching, seems to happen in the org.springframework.context.annotation.ConfigurationClassEnhancer.
When the env method is invoked, the org.springframework.context.annotation.ConfigurationClassEnhancer.BeanMethodInterceptor#intercept intercepts the method invocation.
This method invokes the org.springframework.context.annotation.ConfigurationClassEnhancer.BeanMethodInterceptor#obtainBeanInstanceFromFactory method, which temporarily sets the currentlyInCreation flag of the env bean to false. This is a problem, because before the method would reset the flag to true, it asks the factory to instantiate the env bean.
This factory proceeds to invoke the env method, which gets intercepted again by the same org.springframework.context.annotation.ConfigurationClassEnhancer.BeanMethodInterceptor#intercept method.
But this time, the factoryContainsBean(beanFactory, BeanFactory.FACTORY_BEAN_PREFIX + beanName) &&
factoryContainsBean(beanFactory, beanName) expression becomes true because the currentlyInCreation flag has been set to false, which in turn results in the intercept method to ask the beanFactory to instantiate the been, restarting the infinite interception loop, until a StackOverflowError occurs.
Anyone faced this problem before? How can this be resolved?
PS.: Here is part of the stack trace that I managed to dig out, I do believe this is the most relevant part:

this is my first question so pardon me if the way I phrase the questions still need improvement
I am currently working on a Spring Boot Web Application which uses Redis as a Cache to prevent excessive calls to external APIs. In that sense, Spring is actually good to have but not a necessity.
The structure of the project is as the follow
1.) A persistence module containings DAO classes that compiles spring-data-redis project and uses RedisTemplate with #Autowired annotation
Example RedisDao class(I am not using the exact implementation due to private code reasons):
#Autowired
private RedisTemplate redisTemplate
public AuthInfoDto createAuthInfo(Integer memberId, Integer expiry) {
//Some method to generate key
String key = createAuthKey(memberId)
redisTemplate.opsForValue().set(key, memberId)
}
This project is then built with gradle clean install to generate the jar file to be imported by main project
2.) The main project then compiles the persistence project and I set up configuration in this main project
#Configuration
#Lazy
public class RedisConfigure {
#Bean
#Lazy
public RedisTemplate<String, Integer> redisTemplate(JedisConnectionFactory jedisConnectionFactory) {
RedisTemplate<String, Integer> redisTemplate = new RedisTemplate<>();
redisTemplate.setConnectionFactory(jedisConnectionFactory)
redisTemplate.setKeySerializer(new StringRedisSerializer());
redisTemplate.setValueSerializer(new GenericJackson2JsonRedisSerializer());
return redisTemplate;
}
}
The problem is that; when Sentinel is not available or there's a connection error to Sentinel. The Spring Boot application cannot start
I have tried adding #Lazy annotations to all the beans and configuration files including that in the persistence module but its still not working.
Something I notice is that JedisConnectionFactory automatically throws an exception if it cannot detect any Sentinel during startup.
May I know if there are any ways I can prevent spring boot from trying to connect to Sentinel during startup?
Thank you very much
EDIT
Here is the error code. As for JedisConnectionFactory Bean; I let spring-data-redis auto configuration handle it for me so i just set the required properties in my application.yml file
spring.redis:
pool:
max-idle: 10
min-idle: 5
sentinel:
master: redis-cluster
nodes: sentinelhost1:port1,sentinelhost2:port2,sentinelhost3:port3

The exception you're seeing comes from JedisConnectionFactory.afterPropertiesSet(). You need to set all Redis-related beans to #Lazy, also the connection factory.
You would need to declare your own JedisConnectionFactory bean. Alternatively, try using the Lettuce driver as Lettuce attempts to resolve a Redis server rather lazily.

Can any one tell me what I am doing wrong in above code ? or tell me any another way to declare variable in application.property file
It looks like what Spring is trying to do here is inject the value of ${crossOrigin} into your method.
In findLocation, it's not breaking because there are no method arguments in which to inject the value
In the btnSearchClick, there's more than one argument and it's not attempting to inject the value
There's one argument, and it's trying to inject the value of ${crossOrigin} into AccountMaintenanceSave saveObj
You should just inject ${crossOrigin} into a #CrossOrigin at the top of your class? Like so:
#RestController
#CrossOrigin(origins = "${crossOrigin}")
#RequestMapping("/api.spacestudy.com/SpaceStudy/Admin/Account")
public class AccountController {
#Autowired
AccountService accService;
...
}
And access the variable that way. You'll need to remove the #Value annotations from your controller methods.
You'll also need to just specify the origin name in your application.properties:
crossOrigin=http://localhost:4200

I am using Maven to resolve my dependencies, the project libraries contain spring-data-elasticsearch and spring-data-commons from the Spring Data Lovelace-M1 release train.
I trimmed the repository definition to its simplest expression:
public interface UserRepository
extends ElasticsearchCrudRepository<User, String> {
}
The configuration looks like this:
#Configuration
#EnableElasticsearchRepositories(basePackages = "my.company.dao", elasticsearchTemplateRef = "elasticSearchTemplate")
public class SearchConfiguration {
#Bean
public Client elasticSearchClient() throws UnknownHostException {
TransportClient client = new PreBuiltTransportClient(Settings.EMPTY);
client.addTransportAddress(new InetSocketTransportAddress(
InetAddress.getByName("my.elastic.host"), 9300));
return client;
}
#Bean
public ElasticsearchOperations elasticSearchTemplate() throws UnknownHostException {
return new ElasticsearchTemplate(elasticSearchClient());
}
}
Has anyone had the same issue and, more importantly, how can this be solved?
This issue was due to the fact that I was still using Spring Framework 4 instead of 5 (the latter is mandatory since Spring Data's Kay release train).
I've got the following query which is used within a spring-data repository and runs fine in the jpa console. It has a subselect query which uses jpa's function() to call a native MySQL database method:
select run1.someAttribute1 AS someAttribute1,
run1.someAttribute2 AS someAttribute2,
run1.someAttribute3 AS someAttribute3,
(select
sum(function('timestampdiff', SECOND, run2.runStartTime, run2.runEndTime))
from runTable AS run2
where run2.anotherAttribute1 = run1.anotherAttribute1
and run2.anotherAttribute2 = run1.someAttribute2
and run2.anotherAttribute3 = run1.someAttribute3
) AS runtime,
sum(
case when type(event) = SomeEvent and event.someType = '...' then 1
else 0 end
) AS numberOfSomething1,
sum(
case when type(event) = SomeEvent and event.someType = '...' then 1
else 0 end
) AS numberOfSomething2,
sum(
case when type(event) = SomeEvent and event.someType = '...' then 1
else 0 end
) AS numberOfSomething3,
sum(
case when type(event) = SomeEvent and event.someType = '...' then 1
else 0 end
) AS numberOfSomething4,
sum(
case when type(event) = SomeEvent2 then 1
else 0 end
) AS numberOfSomething5 from runTable AS run1 left join run1.events AS event
group by someAttribute1, someAttribute2, someAttribute3
order by
max(function('right', function('left', someAttribute1, 8), 3)) desc,
someAttribute2 desc,
someAttribute3 desc
The method timestampdiff is registered in my custom MySQLDialect:
public class MySQLDialect extends org.hibernate.dialect.MySQLDialect {
public MySQLDialect() {
super();
registerFunction("timestampdiff", new SQLFunctionTemplate(LongType.INSTANCE, "timestampdiff(?1, ?2, ?3)"));
}
}
A spring boot application uses this repository and starts up without any error. When opening the page which is linked to the repository (through a bean and service layer of course), it loads up and shows the desired result in a datatable.
The problem occurs when I implement any unit (integration) test (i guess through scanning the repository package?!). While the unit test is starting up, Hibernate throws a NullPointerException.
#RunWith(SpringRunner.class)
#SpringBootTest
#ContextConfiguration(locations = {"/application-context-test.xml"})
#EnableJpaRepositories("de. ... .persistence.repositories")
public class AnalysisServiceTest {
#Inject
private AnalysisService analysisService;
#Inject

#Test

}
}

So i debugged into that problem and as you can see in the stacktrace, Hibernate fails during AST building within the method findFunctionReturnType(String functionName, SQLFunction sqlFunction, AST firstArgument) which is located in the SessionFactoryHelper class. That method tries to resolve the argumentType through casting firstArgument to an SqlNode and calling getDataType() on it and finally it returns sqlFunction.getReturnType with that argumentType.
In my case, the NPE occurs when resolving the argumentType from the subselect's sum function. functionName is "sum", sqlFunction is an instance of SumFunction and firstArgument is "function(timestampdiff)" (instance of MethodeNode). When getReturnType(argumentType, ... ) is called on return, argumentType is null because obvoiusly, it cannot be resolved from "function(timestampdiff)", thus causing the NPE.
Question
Is there any way i can use function() together with hibernate in a subselect? Why does it fail in my unit tests while working perfectly in the spring boot application?
EDIT
It appears to only work for me in my spring boot application. One of m coworkers has it also fail for the application startup. There is nothing different from our code and IDE
I've already read about that magic NPE but couldn't find a solution for my problem.
This sounds like a dependency/class loading issue. I'd try the following
make a diff of your dependencies/classpath. If you're using maven use its dependency plugin to print the dependency tree (mvn dependency:tree). Look out for duplicate dependencies and different versions in test and production code. Print out the classpath at runtime and again compare it between test and production.
put a breakpoint in the MySqlDialect to ensure it gets loaded.
what I'd like to do is to have jar file with configured messaging queue.
The structure of my project is the following: I have spring boot application in the module emulator which uses mq-api module (in terms of Maven)
emulator
package emulator;
#ComponentScan(basePackageClasses = {MqConfig.class})
#SpringBootApplication
public class Application {
static final Logger log = LoggerFactory.getLogger(Application.class);
public static void main(String[] args) throws InterruptedException {
SpringApplication.run(Application.class, args);
}
}
mq-api
package mq;
#Configuration
#EnableRabbit
#ImportResource(value = "classpath:/mq.properties", reader = PropertiesBeanDefinitionReader.class)
public class MqConfig {
#Bean
public TopicExchange topicExchange() {
return new TopicExchange("exc");
}
}
mq.properties inside the mq-api.jar
spring.rabbitmq.host=localhost
Running the emulator application I have the exception:
14:38:22.447 ERROR o.s.boot.SpringApplication - Application startup failed
org.springframework.beans.factory.BeanCreationException: Error creating bean with name 'spring.rabbitmq': Instantiation of bean failed; nested exception is java.lang.IllegalStateException: No bean class specified on bean definition

If I remove #ImportResource application starts without error and of course skips configuration file mq.properties
I use spring boot 1.3.0 (boot-starter, *-starter-amqp)
As #M. Deinum points out, #ImportResource is meant for importing bean definitions from XML files. It won't work for loading property files. In order to load property files, you can use #PropertySource. Take a look at this post on a good example of how to do this.
