Getting NPE when trying to autowire using Spring framework - java

I am facing a NPE with autowiring so have put together a quick demo code below using which I am able to reproduce the problem.
Below code for Component class :
#Component
public class AppTest
{
public void printMe(){
System.out.println("This is a test print.");
}
}
Below code for Configuration code :
#Configuration
#ComponentScan(basePackages = "com.test.spring")
public class TestApplication {
}
Below test method which throws null at line test.printMe():
#RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class)
public class Test {
#Autowired
private AppTest test;
#org.junit.Test
public void Main() {
test.printMe();
}
}
Below an extract from POM.XML
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-context</artifactId>
<version>${spring.version}</version>
<exclusions>
<exclusion>
<groupId>commons-logging</groupId>
<artifactId>commons-logging</artifactId>
</exclusion>
</exclusions>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-test</artifactId>
<version>4.2.5.RELEASE</version>
</dependency>
<!-- https://mvnrepository.com/artifact/org.springframework/spring-jdbc -->
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-jdbc</artifactId>
<version>4.2.5.RELEASE</version>
</dependency>
I am seeing following error:

Your test class is missing the #ContextConfiguration. Without it, Spring wont know where to find the necessary beans. The class TestApplication includes the #ComponentScan which will find all the beans in the specified package. So just point the context config to that class.
#ContextConfiguration(classes = TestApplication.class)
Updated Test Class:
#RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class)
#ContextConfiguration(classes = TestApplication.class)
public class Test {
...
}

I have 2 things to say
1st one try to use
#ContextConfiguration(classes = TestApplication.class)
in your Test Class.
2nd is the best practice always use Constructor Injection rather than Field Injection.
You can also read Field Injection is always harmful as compared to Constructor injection

How can I scan or access a class that is in another folder?

I try to make tests of other classes that contain functions, but I don't know how or if I'm doing it wrong to inject them to the test and it works correctly. I have this TramsManager test which is located in src/main/java in the com.manager.commons.TramsManager.java package and I have the test file in src/test/java in the com.unittests.ValidateTramsManager package.
Test code:
#RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class)
#SpringBootTest(classes = TramsManager.class)
public class ValidateTramsManagerTest {
#Autowired
TramsManager tramsManager;
If I run it tells me this error :
java.lang.IllegalStateException: Failed to load ApplicationContext
And the class :
#Component
public class TramsManager {
private static Validator validator;
public static String createTramNotification(String operation, String ean) {
return operation + "|" + ean + "|";
}
I have another test where I do the exact same thing with another class and with other medos and it runs fine without any errors.
If i comment this #SpringBootTest(classes = TramsManager.class)
This other error comes out :
org.springframework.beans.factory.UnsatisfiedDependencyException: Error creating bean with name
I've tried ComponentScan trying to access the component where the class #ComponentScan(basePackages = "com.manager.commons") is located and it doesn't work either. What am I doing wrong and how can I fix it.
PD: I am using JUnit version 4

Testing with Springboot #autowire does not work with #SpringBootTest

I am writing Junits in springboot application , which has only one Initializer class as
#SpringBootApplication
public class Initializer extends SpringBootServletInitializer {
#Override
protected SpringApplicationBuilder configure(SpringApplicationBuilder
application) {
return application.sources(Initializer.class);

}
and other controller and service classes.
My Junit for a service class looks like:
#RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class)
#SpringBootTest
public class ServiceTest {
#Autowired
private CommonUtils commonUtils;
-----do assert cases---------

There is no other configuration classes like application context in code.
You can test using annotattion #SpringBootTest, with property "classes", where you need to add your spring-boot main class:
#SpringBootTest(classes = YOUR_MAIN_CLASS.class, webEnvironment = SpringBootTest.WebEnvironment.NONE)

JUnit 4.12: testing util classes

I have a maven project in Eclipse called TdkUtils, with this pom.xml: This is a utils project. So I want to create a jar, put it in the repository and use it in another projects.
In this project I have this class:

But I don't know how to load the app. context because in fact that's not an application
You are looking for ContextConfiguration annotation
https://docs.spring.io/spring-framework/docs/current/javadoc-api/org/springframework/test/context/ContextConfiguration.html
then you'll have:
#ContextConfiguration(locations = {"/integrationContextTest.xml"})
#RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class)
public class TdkSMSSenderTest {
}
And you will need to have your test context (the integrationContextTest.xml) on classpath. Note slash before filename - it means the file will be right on classpath, not in some directory on it.
For example I have this directory on classpath:
d:\Projects\SomeProject\trunk\src\test\resources\
It contains all test contexts.
(Actually maven will put this directory on class path by default)

PAX-CDI: inter bundle producer methods

With PAX-CDI: How can I define a producer method in one bundle and consume it in another bundle?
I guess since in PAX-CDI inter bundle bean injections has to use the OSGi service registry, the #OsgiServiceProvider annotation is also used for producer methods.
And since I want a different instance for each injection point, I guess I need the prototype scope.
So I tried (among other things):
import org.slf4j.Logger;
import org.slf4j.LoggerFactory;
...
#Produces
#OsgiServiceProvider
#PrototypeScoped
public Logger getLogger(InjectionPoint injectionPoint) {
return LoggerFactory.getLogger(injectionPoint.getMember().getDeclaringClass());
}
And on the consumer side I tried:
#Inject
#OsgiService
private Logger logger;
But it's not working.
I'm getting different exceptions depending on the execution environment.
Eg. with Pax Exam:
testParameterizedTypeSupported(org.ops4j.pax.cdi.test.InterBundleProducesTest) Time elapsed: 10.043 sec <<< ERROR!

ERROR: org.ops4j.pax.cdi.extender (41): [CdiExtender(33)] Failed creating the component instance; see log for reason
As far as I can tell it is not possible to use #Produces over bundle boundaries.
You can offer and inject an OSGi service of course but it will not work for your case. You want the Logger to be created for each bean and have a different logger name that depends on the bean class. This is not possible with OSGi services. You create a service once and inject it.
For logging the whole effort you do is not really necessary. Just use the slf4j factory as outside OSGi. It should work fine.

Spring, I have no application-context for testing. What is wrong with that?

I am 1 day old to Spring
This is how my test looks
#RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class)
#ContextConfiguration
public class PropertyReaderTest {
#Autowired
private PropertyReader propertyReader;
#Test
public void testGetProfile() throws Exception {
System.out.printf(System.getProperty("spring.active.profiles"));
assertEquals("development", propertyReader.getProfile());
}
}
This is my source class
#Component
public class PropertyReader {
#Value("${spring.active.profiles")
private String profile;
#Nonnull
public String getProfile() {
return profile;
}
and maven dependency
<dependencies>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-context</artifactId>
<version>4.0.3.RELEASE</version>
</dependency>
</dependencies>
My tests fail

I looked at docs and they have code like
#RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class)
#ContextConfiguration(locations = { "/simple-job-launcher-context.xml",
"/jobs/skipSampleJob.xml" })
public class SkipSampleFunctionalTests extends AbstractJobTests { ... }
But I do not have any such context files, what am I missing?
When you simply leave your ContextConfiguration empty, like so..
#RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class)
#ContextConfiguration // nothing defined here
public class PropertyReaderTest {
... then it will look at default locations for a context definition. This typically comes in a form of an xml file where you would define beans and 'context' information.
In that xml file, you'll want to make a bean definition of your PropertyReader that you are trying to have Spring #Autowire. You didn't expect Spring to just know how to do it without some instructions did you? ;) As much magic as Spring does, you'll need to help it define some things.
Perhaps you wanted to run a standalone JUnit test file that has everything defined in itself. You could then define your class like this:
#RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class)
#ContextConfiguration(classes=PropertyReaderTest.class)
public class PropertyReaderTest {
You're telling the JUnit to look in your own class for Context definitions and it will read whatever annotation definitions you've added in your JUnit class.
Just remember that when you want Spring to read things in "Context", the context needs to be defined... in some form or another.
If you don't want to explicitly define all your components, you can have Spring look for them. But still, you need to create a context that tells Spring to do that. See here:
http://docs.spring.io/spring/docs/3.0.0.M3/reference/html/ch04s12.html
the context file in spring is required to configure and register the beans.
if we dont want to use it, we should configure the beans in some other way.
so we will use another solution for your problem(java based bean configuration)
#RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class)
#ContextConfiguration(loader=AnnotationConfigContextLoader.class)
public class PropertyReaderTest {
#Configuration
static class ContextConfiguration {
// this bean will be injected into the OrderServiceTest class
#Bean
public PropertyReader getPropertyReader () {
PropertyReader propertyReader = new PropertyReader();
// set profile property and other properties, etc.
return propertyReader;
}
}
#Autowired
private PropertyReader propertyReader;
#Test
public void testGetProfile() throws Exception {
System.out.printf(System.getProperty("spring.active.profiles"));
assertEquals("development", propertyReader.getProfile());
}
}
