EDIT: A solution to this problem has been found, the issue was that in
persistence.xml, the data-source-name needed to be prefixed with
java:comp/env/ like so: java:comp/env/jdbc/TSDB
I know this is a well documented issue, however, after many different attempts and ample reading, i still cannot configure a datasource to be used by Hibernate.
I am trying to develop a Tomcat application server which uses hibernate to connect to a MySQL server.
I am using Eclipse Version: 2018-12 (4.10.0)
Hibernate: 5.4.1.Final
Mysql connector: 8.0.14
SERVER: Apache Tomcat/9.0.14
The datasource is defined in server.xml:
<GlobalNamingResources>
<Resource auth="Container" driverClassName="com.mysql.jdbc.Driver" maxTotal="100"
maxIdle="30" maxWaitMillis="10000" minIdle="5" name="jdbc/TSDB" password="PASSWORD"
type="javax.sql.DataSource" url="jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/tstest?allowPublicKeyRetrieval=true" username="USERNAME"/>
</GlobalNamingResources>
Web.xml:
<web-app xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns="http://xmlns.jcp.org/xml/ns/javaee" xsi:schemaLocation="http://xmlns.jcp.org/xml/ns/javaee http://xmlns.jcp.org/xml/ns/javaee/web-app_4_0.xsd" id="WebApp_ID" version="4.0">
<resource-ref>
<res-ref-name>jdbc/TSDB</res-ref-name>
<res-type>javax.sql.DataSource</res-type>
<res-auth>Container</res-auth>
</resource-ref>
</web-app>
Context.xml:
<Context>
<ResourceLink name="jdbc/TSDB" global="jdbc/TSDB" type="javax.sql.DataSource" />
</Context>
Persistence.xml:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<persistence version="2.1"
xmlns="http://xmlns.jcp.org/xml/ns/persistence" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
xsi:schemaLocation="http://xmlns.jcp.org/xml/ns/persistence http://xmlns.jcp.org/xml/ns/persistence/persistence_2_1.xsd">
<persistence-unit name="TsPersistence" transaction-type="JTA">
<provider>org.hibernate.jpa.HibernatePersistenceProvider</provider>
<jta-data-source>jdbc/TSDB</jta-data-source>

<class>com.ts.hibernate.entities.User</class>
<!-- EO Entity Classes Mappings -->
<properties>
<property name="hibernate.dialect" value="org.hibernate.dialect.MySQLDialect"/>
</properties>
</persistence-unit>
</persistence>
Then when i try to create an entity manager in a web listener:
#WebListener
public class HibernateSessionFactoryListener implements ServletContextListener {
public final Logger logger = LogManager.getLogger(HibernateSessionFactoryListener.class);
public void contextInitialized(ServletContextEvent servletContextEvent) {
EntityManagerFactory entityManagerFactory = Persistence.createEntityManagerFactory("TsPersistence");
servletContextEvent.getServletContext().setAttribute("EntityManagerFactory", entityManagerFactory);
logger.info("Entity Manager Configured Successfully!");
}
I am getting the following error:

Is there any additional configuration i need to create?
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
The GlobalNamingResource element declared in the server.xml file is equivalent (Docs) to the resource-ref declared in the web.xml file. I'd say remove the one inside web.xml
<resource-ref>
<res-ref-name>jdbc/TSDB</res-ref-name>
<res-type>javax.sql.DataSource</res-type>
<res-auth>Container</res-auth>
</resource-ref>

I want to create a web application using Spring MVC framework, so I followed this steps :
I download spring-framework-5.1.2.RELEASE-dist.
I opened a new project (Web Application) using IntelliJ IDEA.
I created a lib directory under WEB-INF and I added all JAR file downloaded previously.
I created a view directory under WEB-INF for all my JSP views
I added two XML files: web.xml and spring-demo-servlet.xml
web.xml

Thank's for helping!
Either you failed to include jackson-databind jar or the proper version of that jar for your current Spring project. The latest is 2.9.7, try to build the project with that version.
Please note that the way you are handling the jar dependencies is not the correct way to do this. As #chrylis suggested in the comment, you should be using a build tool either Maven or Gradle for this.
I need some assist, I've tried to run it since this morning, I've 2 projects,
EJB project (StudentManajementEJB)
Dynamic web project (StudentManajementWeb)
web server :
jboss-as-7.1.1.Final
The StudentManajementEJB has been succesfully deployed (Table gets created in the db), as a proof :
Now I go link the StudentManajementWeb to StudentManajementEJB.
Now I right click- run on server the StudentManajementWeb , I keep getting :

Having the class in the build path is good for build time, but for the deployment the container needs access to the dependencies. Try to include your jar file in your war file.
I'm trying to build a simple Spring and Hibernate/PostgreSQL application running on Tomcat. When I boot the application in Tomcat, I get the follow error:
PropertyAccessException 1: org.springframework.beans.MethodInvocationException: Property 'driverClassName' threw exception; nested exception is java.lang.IllegalStateException: Could not load JDBC driver class [com.postgresql.Driver]

Hopefully, I've provided all the configurations needed to see what I'm doing.
Thanks in advance for your help! I'm an experienced Java programmer, but new to Spring/Hibernate.
The driver name is org.postgresql.Driver, not com.postgresql.Driver.
I hope you are not planning to use org.springframework.jdbc.datasource.DriverManagerDataSource in live environment. It is useful for test or standalone environment. For an app running on Tomcat you should look into one supporting connection pooling.
I created a dynamic web project named HibernateSetUpTest2, jpa is marked as one of the project facets. I want to put this on a tomcat server in the future but right now I simply need to test if hibernate is working and it isn't.
I followed the MySQL DBCP Example on here (except for the jsp part):
https://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-6.0-doc/jndi-datasource-examples-howto.html
Now my xmls look like this:
persistence.xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<persistence version="2.1"
xmlns="http://xmlns.jcp.org/xml/ns/persistence" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
xsi:schemaLocation="http://xmlns.jcp.org/xml/ns/persistence http://xmlns.jcp.org/xml/ns/persistence/persistence_2_1.xsd">
<persistence-unit name="unitName" transaction-type="JTA">
<provider>org.hibernate.jpa.HibernatePersistenceProvider</provider>
<jta-data-source>jdbc/TestDB</jta-data-source>
<class>entities.TestDataRow</class>
<properties>
<property name="hibernate.transaction.jta.platform"
value="org.hibernate.service.jta.platform.internal.SunOneJtaPlatform" />
<!-- andere properties hier definiƫren -->
<!-- geen properties definiƫren voor password, user, driver etc; want
we gebruiken datasource -->
<property name="hibernate.dialect" value="org.hibernate.dialect.MySQLDialect" />
<property name="hibernate.hbm2ddl.auto" value="update" />
<property name="hibernate.connection.autocommit" value="true" />
</properties>
</persistence-unit>
</persistence>
web.xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<web-app xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns="http://xmlns.jcp.org/xml/ns/javaee" xsi:schemaLocation="http://xmlns.jcp.org/xml/ns/javaee http://xmlns.jcp.org/xml/ns/javaee/web-app_3_1.xsd" id="WebApp_ID" version="3.1">
<display-name>HibernateSetUpTest2</display-name>

<res-ref-name>jdbc/TestDB</res-ref-name>
<res-type>javax.sql.DataSource</res-type>
<res-auth>Container</res-auth>
</resource-ref>
</web-app>
In the project explorer of eclipse it shows a separate folder named Servers and in it is the context.xml :
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<Context>
<WatchedResource>WEB-INF/web.xml</WatchedResource>
<WatchedResource>${catalina.base}/conf/web.xml</WatchedResource>
<Resource name="jdbc/TestDB" auth="Container" type="javax.sql.DataSource"
maxActive="100" maxIdle="30" maxWait="10000"
username="javauser" password="javadude" driverClassName="com.mysql.jdbc.Driver"
url="jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/javatest"/>
</Context>
In my src folder I wrote a Test:
package tests;
import javax.persistence.EntityManager;
import javax.persistence.EntityManagerFactory;
import javax.persistence.EntityTransaction;
import javax.persistence.Persistence;
import entities.TestDataRow;
public class Hibernate {
public static void main(String[] args) {
EntityManagerFactory emf = Persistence.createEntityManagerFactory("unitName");
EntityManager em = emf.createEntityManager();
EntityTransaction tx = em.getTransaction();
tx.begin();
TestDataRow t = em.find(TestDataRow.class, 1);
System.out.println(t.getFoo());
tx.commit();
em.close();
emf.close();
}
}
This uses the entity:
package entities;
import javax.persistence.Entity;
import javax.persistence.Id;
import javax.persistence.Table;
#Entity
#Table(name="testdata")
public class TestDataRow {
#Id
private int id;
private String foo;
private int bar;
public int getId() {
return id;
}
public void setId(int id) {
this.id = id;
}
public String getFoo() {
return foo;
}
public void setFoo(String foo) {
this.foo = foo;
}
public int getBar() {
return bar;
}
public void setBar(int bar) {
this.bar = bar;
}
}
When I run the test as a java application it throws errors:

What am I doing wrong?
Your code itself looks fine (can't tell for sure but nothing seems to be seriously wrong) but you have a huge issue with your test itself:
It is a standalone test.
What the errormessage is telling you:
javax.naming.NoInitialContextException: Need to specify class name in environment or system property
Basically means, that while attempting to lookup the JNDI variable (your DB resource definition) it had nowhere to "look". There is no context in your test. That is why it failed.
The standard ways of dealing with this kind of problem are:
either programmatically creating a context
or - just for the sake of the test - inserting a DB resource definition via simple autowiring, and not using JNDI at all.
Example and source for further ideas can be found here:
Setting up JNDI Datasource for uni testing
I think you need some initialisation or its a lack of configuration

I'm building a project based on Spring and Hibernate inspired to a Spring MVC tutorial I downloaded. I basically inherited pom.xml and constructed the Eclipse project by it, writing Java code from scratch. Anyway, I'm sure mine is a dependency problem.
Yesterday I added Java EE dependency to pom.xml because of a NoClassDefFoundError: javax/persistence/Entity when loading Hibernate. I Googled and got suggested to add Java EE
<dependency>
<groupId>javax</groupId>
<artifactId>javaee-api</artifactId>
<version>6.0</version>
</dependency>
However now I'm getting SEVERE: Error configuring application listener of class com.sun.faces.config.ConfigureListener
java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.sun.faces.config.ConfigureListener
My project is a Spring MVC REST API. I have read that this error is caused by missing JSF implementation but I don't need JSF here nor I know how to add it to pom.xml if I really need it.
I found no reference to this class in web.xml (so I could work without it). It doesn't seem required by Hibernate AFAIK (HB works on plain old Java console apps too, no need for JSF).
How can I fix the project?

Upgrading to Hibernate 4 solved this problem.
I had others that perhaps I might have fixed now. THIS problem is now solved.
Migrating from HB 3 to 4 forced me to perform some bean tweaking
