What is the purpose of apply maven plugin in build.gradle? - java

I keep seeing apply plugin: 'maven' in build.gradle files for Java projects. What is the purpose of adding a Maven plugin? I can't seem to find the plugin when querying for it on plugins.gradle.org.

Why don't you just google it?

Gradle plugin must not include version

I have a multiproject gradle project
project_android
project_lib
app
project-lib is in its own git repository which I added to to project_android using git subtree.
I'm stuck. In order to build project_lib by itself, I need to specify a version for this plugin. If I don't have the version
plugins {
id 'org.jetbrains.kotlin.jvm'
}
I get this error when building
* What went wrong:
Plugin [id: 'org.jetbrains.kotlin.jvm'] was not found in any of the following sources:
- Gradle Core Plugins (plugin is not in 'org.gradle' namespace)
- Plugin Repositories (plugin dependency must include a version number for this source)
```
So I add a version and then it works
plugins {
id 'org.jetbrains.kotlin.jvm' version "1.7.10"
}
But now I can't build project_android, here is the error
Error resolving plugin [id: 'org.jetbrains.kotlin.jvm', version: '1.7.10']
> Plugin request for plugin already on the classpath must not include a version
I haven't added this plugin to app so I don't know where it comes from. This is the plugins in project_android/app/build.gradle
plugins {
id 'com.android.application'
id 'kotlin-android'
// Kotlin Annotation Processing Tool
id 'kotlin-kapt'
// Google Services plugin
id 'com.google.gms.google-services'
// Navigation
id 'androidx.navigation.safeargs.kotlin'
// Performance Monitoring plugin
id 'com.google.firebase.firebase-perf'
}
One project requires me to add a version. Another requires me not to add a version. What do I do to keep both happy?
Usually when I run into this it's because there is another implementation of that plug-in in one of the other gradle files. Look in your build.gradle project file and/or your gradle settings file to see if another version of 'org.jetbrains.kotlin.jvm' is listed. You may have to play around with deleting it from one of those other files and resyncing the gradle until it works.
I resolved this by using the gradle legacy plugin dsl. In project_lib\build.gradle instead of:
plugins {
id 'org.jetbrains.kotlin.jvm' version '1.17.10'
}
I instead do this
buildscript {
repositories {
gradlePluginPortal()
}
dependencies {
classpath "org.jetbrains.kotlin:kotlin-gradle-plugin:1.7.10"
}
}
apply plugin: "org.jetbrains.kotlin.jvm"
Apply gradle custom module plugin
I created a plugin for gradle with java.I want to test it.
so, I created a another gradle project add I added my plugin as a module.
Now , How can I apply my module as a plugin in build.gradle file ?
My project structure
My plugin
version '1.0.0'
id = 'com.hello.first.plugin'
implementationClass = 'com.hello.first.plugin'
Here I saw for applying jar as a plugin in gradle : ANSWER.
How can I add module as a plugin in build.gradle ?
You need to make it a standalone project and publish it, at least to mavenLocal().
Then just add mavenLocal() into buildscript.dependencies and it should resolve.
A local flatDir repository should work, too.
Plugin was not found with building gradle
Having a gradle project.
When i'm trying to build project.
buildscript {
ext {
springBootVersion = '2.2.4.RELEASE'
}
repositories {
mavenCentral()
maven {
url "https://plugins.gradle.org/m2/"
}
}
dependencies {
classpath("org.springframework.boot:spring-boot-gradle-plugin:${springBootVersion}")
classpath "gradle.plugin.org.hidetake:gradle-swagger-generator-plugin:2.9.0"
classpath "net.ltgt.gradle:gradle-apt-plugin:0.21"
}
}
plugins {
id "net.ltgt.apt-eclipse" version "0.21"
id "net.ltgt.apt-idea" version "0.15"
id "net.ltgt.apt" version "0.15"
}
I have error which is connected with plugins
Plugin [id: 'net.ltgt.apt-eclipse', version: '0.15'] was not found in any of the following sources:
How to fix it?
I was facing the same issue. In build.gradle, the paths provided for the dependencies weren't matching the folders specified. Placing the folders in the mentioned path shown in the build.gradle solved it. After that I was able to build the project without errors.
TL;DR: If you are using a current gradle version, it's fine to just drop all of the net.ltgt.apt dependencies. You will not need it anymore because, it's features are now available natively in Gradle.
More details:
From the plugin README.md (https://github.com/tbroyer/gradle-apt-plugin#readme)
The goal of this plugin was to eventually no longer be needed, being superseded by built-in features. This has become a reality with Gradle 5.2 and IntelliJ IDEA 2019.1. tl;dr: this plugin is obsolete, don't use it. If you're using Eclipse though, continue reading.
It originally did a few things to make it easier/safer to use Java annotation processors in a Gradle build. Those things are now available natively in Gradle, so what's this plugin about?
If you use older versions of Gradle (pre-4.6), you can still benefit from those features:
it ensures the presence of configurations for your compile-time only dependencies (annotations, generally) and annotation processors, consistently across all supported Gradle versions;
automatically configures the corresponding JavaCompile and GroovyCompile tasks to make use of these configurations, when the java or groovy plugin is applied.
With recent versions of Gradle (between 4.6 and 5.1), this plugin will actually only:
add some DSL to configure annotation processors; it is however recommended to directly configure the tasks' options.compilerArgs;
backport the sourceSet.output.generatedSourcesDirs Gradle 5.2 API;
configure JavaCompile and GroovyCompile tasks' options.annotationProcessorGeneratedSourcesDirectory with a sane default value so you can see the generated sources in your IDE and for debugging, and avoid shipping them in your JARs.
Gradle could not find retrofit dependencies
I need some retrofit2 dependencies for my java project.
In build.gradle additional repositories are declared:
repositories
{
jcenter()
mavenCentral()
mavenLocal()
}
In dependencies section I declared:
compile 'com.squareup.retrofit2:retrofit:2.1.0'
compile 'com.squareup.retrofit2:converter-jackson:2.1.0'
So Gradle could not find them.
I used project-report plugin to analyze dependency tree. I got next report:
Interesting thing that before I used 2.0.2 versions for retrofit libraries and Gradle found them.
Any help will be appreciated.
Gradle version 2.12
If using IntelliJ you can include plugin idea or include plugin eclipse, which gives you an option to run gradle idea or gradle eclipseClasspath tasks and refresh the project with updated/freshly added dependencies.
IDE's are not yet ideal supporting gradle.
Make Gradle use Maven local repository for downloading artifacts
I know I can configure Gradle to use local Maven repository
repositories {
mavenLocal()
mavenCentral()
}
Can I configure Gradle to download into Local (maven) repository? (So that Maven would also be able to use those jars)
ref Gradle configuration to use maven local repository
A solution was given in the gradle forums:
https://discuss.gradle.org/t/need-a-gradle-task-to-copy-all-dependencies-to-a-local-maven-repo/13397/2
using this gradle plugin: https://github.com/ysb33r/ivypot-gradle-plugin
you can call a new tasg
gradle syncRemoteRepositories
which will download all dependencies to a local Ivy repository (which is the same library Maven uses). The folder you point to with
syncRemoteRepositories {
repoRoot '/path/to/repo'
}
will contain the dependencies. I would suggest first trying out with a different local path than your M2_HOME, because I saw some warning about the Ivy repository structure having changed between Maven versions.
It should be as simple as
apply plugin: 'maven'
apply plugin: 'java'
dependencies {
mavenLocal()
}
And
gradle install
