Hi I'm trying to run a java application that binds a class to the naming server, but i constantly get a ClassNotFoundException
First I start the registry:

Run the rmiregisrty command from your /bin, /build, or /build/classes folder, whichever folder is the root of your built files.
I spent half a day trying to solve that same thing.
The exception is occurring because the rmiregistry application doesn't know where to load classes from. When you attempt to bind an object in the RMI registry, the registry downloads the class definition for that object. Some of the other answers are telling you to get around this by setting the classpath for the rmiregistry app so that it has the class definitions when it is started and doesn't need to download anything, but Sun's Java RMI tutorial explicitly says not to do this. I suspect this has the potential to cause conflicts between the version of the class in the registry and the class on the server.
The correct way to handle the problem is to set the java.rmi.server.codebase property as you were trying to do. The property requires that a directory path be terminated with a forward slash, like so:
-Djava.rmi.server.codebase=file:${workspace_loc}/progInternet2008/
You may also be having trouble if the ${workspace_loc} variable is a relative path and the rmiregistry application was not started in the same directory so the relative path is not correct for it. If you either make the path absolute, or start the rmiregistry in the appropriate directory, the ClassNotFoundException should go away. See the tutorial on the java.rmi.server.codebase property for a little more detailed information.
Okay I just overcame this problem. Make sure when you run rmiregistry that your CLASSPATH environment variable is set.
For example, you might have a script:
set CLASSPATH=[path to jdbc driver].jar
rmiregistry.exe
This was all I needed to get my lost classpath working. I'm not sure how to send -cp commandline to rmiregistry.exe. Its documentation is quite lacking.
I'm fairly certain that you'll have to start your RMI server using the same classpath as your application. I believe it takes the same parameters as java, i.e. -cp [your class path].
Close the cmd window where the rmiregistry was initially started.In a fresh cmd go to the location where your project classfiles are located(uptill bin) and start the registry using the below command:
rmiregistry -J-Djava.rmi.server.useCodebaseOnly=false
If you are using Eclipse ,Run the ServerSideProject and your ImplementationClass Instance gets bound to the URL specified.
Just print a line below the the binding method and see to it whether it is gets printed. If it gets printed successfully it means your server is working fine.
try to add /bin at the end of your VM Arg:
-Djava.rmi.server.codebase=file:${workspace_loc}/progInternet2008/bin
The file you will run are in this directory, so you need to include it in the path.
I upgraded from JDK1.6.0_33 to 1.7.0_45 and had the same problem. I found this document and resolved the problem by starting rmiregistry with:
rmiregistry -Djava.rmi.server.useCodebaseOnly=false

I had the same problem, to fix this ensure that your CLASSPATH is set to the path containing the server classes when running rmiregistry.
On a linux machine run the following commands.
export CLASSPATH="<server_class_path>"
Ensure the CLASSPATH has been set:
echo $CLASSPATH
Once the class path has been set, run rmiregistry
rmiregistry &
I spent a whole day uninstalling and reinstalling my JDK and changing the classpaths's and environment variables. But the culprit was that the command start rmigregistry didnt' start rmiregistry in a proper way. So, thanks for the comments on this page the solution was to unset the CLASSPATH temporarily. And that is done through the command set CLASSPATH=

I just tried to run Jetty 9 as non root users, using setuid feature without success for binding low port numbers.

Even though I cannot be sure this is the version I am using, given this one is from a org.mortbay package, while the one Jetty 9 uses is an Eclipse one.
I tried setting -Djetty.libsetuid.path in the java args (first try-catch block), either adding the path to the $PATH variable or setting -Djava.library.path (second try-catch block) or copying the so to /lib and, finally, leaving it as it is (third try-catch block). I got the same exception stack in all the cases.
I cannot be sure if Jetty is either not finding the so file or not being able to load it, given that, if I remove all the references to the path (the cases I described latter), I still get the same error message.
I use Java7 to run Jetty.

I added the following snippet to one of my webapps as as matter of test, given that if the webapp succeed, I would know the problem is not in finding the shared object:

I have the same UnsatisfiedLinkError as a result.

I tried, instead, the following:

Which got me the following error message:

I may conclude, therefore, that the library has been loaded, at least.
Exploring the libsetuid file (nm -D /path/to/the/so), I realized that the so I was using was outdated and was not compatible with Jetty 9, the functions were named as mortbay:

In addition to that, looking through the code of the setuid module, I decided using the property -Djetty.libsetuid.path in my java args for indicating the absolute path of the lib, e.g., -Djetty.libsetuid.path=/opt/jetty/lib/setuid.so

Try to start jBoss server as administrator by pressing right mouse key, it will permit jboss to create all folders and files .
Right click the installation directory of Jboss EA (mine is C:\program files\EAP6.1, then Properties, Security tab. Given everyone permissions on this folder (all users you can see just give full control). This should then be able to create logs etc files within the required folder.
This is just a workaround though only works for local installs.
I had the same issue, it worked after running it on root, maybe you are running it without the proper rights.
I had resolved this issue by creating log directory in the
C:\jboss-eap-6.3\standalone\
it's a problem due to permissions, the solution that worked for me is that i removed the home directory of jboss wildfly from C:\programmes to C:\
Starting Wildfly/Jboss from the administrator cmd worked!!
You are most likely getting this error because you either have the log file open in a text editor or you're already running that instance of JBoss.

Open the launch configuration for the server definition. Add:
-logmodule org.jboss.logmanager to the program arguments before org.jboss.as.standalone
to open the launch configuration double click on the server and click "Open launch configuration"
I am trying to install newrelic on a linux machine with tomcat 7. This installation does not have a catalina.sh so cannot use the newrelic installer.
I tried the manula approach of adding the newrelic.jar to the javaagent like:

I have tried everything I could for this, but nothing works. I have even added the xalan jar manually to the tomcat lib but no luck
You need to make sure you have xalan.jar installed. If it is installed, it may be in the wrong place. You probably need it at the container level, here is a blog post that discusses this issue (tomcat5 but most of the advice should still apply).

Make sure that the location where you put the xalan.jar is in the classpath and that the user account you're running tomcat under has access to it. If you have dropped it in the tomcat /lib folder make sure the perms for the .jar file match the other objects in the folder.

I've got a Java web application (using Spring), deployed with Jetty. If I try to run it on a Windows machine everything works as expected, but if I try to run the same code on my Linux machine, it fails like this:

I've run the app with java -verbose:class, and according to that output, org.apache.log4j.Category is loaded from the log4j JAR in my /WEB-INF/lib, just before the first exception is thrown.
Now, the Java versions on the two machines are slightly different. Both the machines have Sun's java, the Linux machine has 1.6.0_10, while the Windows machine has 1.6.0_08, or maybe 07 or 06, I can't remember the exact number right now, and don't have the machine at hand. But even though the minor versions of the Javas are slightly different, the code shouldn't break like this. Does anyone understand what's wrong here?
You must understand that a classloader can't see everything; they can only see what a parent classloader has loaded or what they have loaded themselves. So if you have two classloaders, say one for Jetty and another for your webapp, your webapp can see log4j (since the JAR is the WEB-INF/lib) but Jetty's classloader can't.
If you manage to make a class available to Jetty (for example something in the DB layer) which uses log4j but which ends up running in the context (and classloader) of Jetty, you will get an error.
To debug this, set a breakpoint in org.springframework.web.util.Log4jWebConfigurer.initLogging(). If you can, copy the source of this class into your project (don't forget to delete it afterwards) and add this line:
ClassLoader cl = Thread.currentThread().getContextClassLoader();
Have a look at the cl object in your debugger. That should give you some information who created it. My guess is that this is the classloader from Jetty.
[EDIT] Note that you get in a different mess if you have log4j in both classloaders: In this case, you will have two classes with the same name which create objects which are not assignment compatible! So make sure there is only a single instance of this jar or that instances of log4j will never be passed between the two contexts (which is usually not possible).
This seems like a classic classloader problem. It could be due to another web app being loaded first which also uses log4j but a version that is different to the one used by the app you are testing. The classloader uses the first version of the class it finds. The server class loading policy can usually be changed in the config files. Sorry I am a bit rusty on this but maybe it can point you in the correct direction.
Make sure there are no other installed apps on the web server,
Make sure the log4j being loaded is the correct version,
Make sure you don't have a log4j lurking somewhere in the classpath of the server.

You're using the same WAR on both machines? Have you checked if the WAR files are identical (no transfer errors occured)?
Some random things to consider:
(1) Check if there are any other versions of log4j floating around on the linux instance, outside of the web-app directories?
(2) Is apache commons logging being used at all? You might want to consider SLF4J instead?
(3) Did the JAR/WAR become corrupt in some way - was it FTP'ed in ASCII or Binary?
(4) Print out the classloader hierarchy in each case, just to see if there are any discrepancies?
Even though the original problem was solved for the asker, I'll point out that a common source of problems when running the same code on Windows vs Linux (or Unix) is case-sensitivity issues. Windows ignores case while Linux or Unix is case-sensitive. This has bitten me more than once.
So if you specify a jar or directory on the classpath, but it isn't the right case then it will fail on Linux but succeed on Windows. This can also be the source of FileNotFoundExceptions.
Had the same problem and found an easy solution/workaround:
In Eclipse in Preferences > Java > Installed JREs, select the JRE > Edit and Add External JARs... and browse to your log4j.jar.
The other workaround is to add log4j.jar to every launch definition in Classpath tab.
