Can't make JDBC connection to MySQL (using Java, IntelliJ, and Linux) - java

I am having issues trying to get a database connection using the code below:

I've, literally, no idea how to troubleshoot this error message. The database exists. The username and password exists. I've currently not added any tables to the database but I don't think that can be the issue, since I'm only making a connection after all...
I can provide extra information if needs be. I feel like I've tried a lot. Does anybody know any ways of getting further information on how and why it's failing?

From your connection string, this database should be on the local machine. Can you try running this command to ensure the socket is open for connections?
telnet 127.0.0.1 3306
and ensure that it connects? You may not have configured your mysql instance to listen for connections from this machine or on this interface address. If the connection fails, you need to modify your mysql config, for example:

I had the same symptoms but for me the solution was to change the bind-address to 0.0.0.0 in /etc/mysql/my.cnf

You can try this instead:
connection = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/jsp_test","user_name","password");

you can try one of the following
"jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/jsp_test","username","password"
or
"jdbc:mysql://'your machines ip (without quote)':3306/jsp_test","username","password"
or
"jdbc:mysql://127.0.0.1:3306/jsp_test","username","password"
as a connection string.

This could happen for a variety of reasons, and I'm quoting from this answer
If you get a SQLException: Connection refused or Connection timed out
or a MySQL specific CommunicationsException: Communications link
failure, then it means that the DB isn't reachable at all.
This can have one or more of the following causes:
IP address or hostname in JDBC URL is wrong.
Hostname in JDBC URL is not recognized by local DNS server.
Port number is missing or wrong in JDBC URL. [Assuming the one you mentioned is correct]
DB server is down.
DB server doesn't accept TCP/IP connections.
DB server has run out of connections.
Something in between Java and DB is blocking connections, e.g. a firewall or proxy.
To solve the one or the other, follow the following advice:
Verify and test them with ping.
Refresh DNS or use IP address in JDBC URL instead.
Verify it based on my.cnf of MySQL DB.
Start the DB.
Verify if mysqld is started without the --skip-networking option.
Restart the DB and fix your code accordingly that it closes connections in finally.
Disable firewall and/or configure
firewall/proxy to allow/forward the port.

Issue connecting to sql database from eclipse project? [duplicate]

I am trying to connect with database using jdbc in java file. It is not connecting at all and giving me the error constantly "Something went wrong"; I guess it is because of the port number because all other data such as username, password and other code seems correct.
I want to check the default port number so that I can try it properly. I did try using all three of these 8080, 80 and 3306 but it shows me error.
Here port 8080 is used for HTTP server, 3306 is supposed to be default from the research and 80 randomly.

You can access those settings via
mysql> show variables;
DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:mysql://"+dbaddress+"/"+dbname+"?user=" + username + "&password=" + password)
This statement can help you. No need to define any other port. Just define the following variables as per your mysql configuration.
dbaddress
dbname
username
password
And if this doesn't works can you post the stacktrace or a screenshot for your error ?
If you want to know the port number you can use following command
SHOW VARIABLES WHERE Variable_name = 'port';

How to handle database connection fail with Hibernate, C3P0 on Java EE?

I am working on Java EE JSF application using Hibernate with C3P0 connection pool. I have tried to search anything possible and impossible and tried many things, but couldnt figure this out.

But I can't catch this, it's just on console and it's not even printed in web browser response (client thread does not receive any exception, it's just hanging while trying to load the page for infinity).

OK, after of few days of work I have constructed a solution.
The problem was that just typical Hibernate session did not throw any exception while using it without database connected. But this piece of code does throw an exception when database not connected (so it can be used as a test):

So, simple try-catch can be used. If an exception is caught, connection is dead.
I used this for regular checking of database connection. On application deploy, a TimerTask is scheduled to run every minute. When it catches an exception, it sets a static variable dbAvailable to false (otherwise to true). This variable is being checked on every HTTP client request and if it's true, error 503 is sent back in response.
For scheduling the timer I used ServletContextListener. C3P0 configuration mentioned in the question.

Connect using 127.0.0.1 instead localhost, maybe a clue of what is happening on your system:
MySQL will try to connect to the unix socket if you tell it to connect
to "localhost". If you tell it to connect to 127.0.0.1 you are forcing
it to connect to the network socket. So probably you have MySQL
configured to only listen to the network socket and not to the file
system socket.

I think you are not specified your db name in your connection URL try this conn = DriverManager.getConnection(url +"/"+ dbName ,userName,password); And be sure that you have created the database with same name.
I face the same issue on a VPS linux server. I solve it by replacing localhost or 127.0.0.1 by the real IP address.
If you are trying to run your code on a Linux Machine or Windows Server.
You can change the server from 'localhost' to specific IP 'xx.xx.xx.xx'
and it should work fine.

It's executed every minute for testing purposes. It will be executed once a week in the future.

The data base is accessable trough the command line.
Note that you create a new instance of application context each time your method is invoked, and don't close it. It means that resources allocated by beans decalred in this context (for example, connections created by connection pool) are not released.
Typically you need to create application context only once during startup of your application and close it upon shutdown, so I suggest you to implement it this way.
If you actullay need to create a new application context each time you call that method, don't forget to close() it at the end of the method (in finally block for reliability).
Also note that you should declare an appropriate destroy-method for your connection pool bean in order to release resources when context is being closed.
The main exception is "java.net.BindException: Address already in use: connect". It seems you have connection pool leak. Are you sure that every connection is closed after usage? Please check it.
