im having trouble deploying a war file on tomcat.
i have written a webapp in netbeans on my windows machine. it all runs fine. what i want to do is deploy the application on my linux computer that is acting as my server. once the application is built, i copy the war file from the dist folder in my project directory onto a pendrive. i then copy this onto the desktop of my linux computer.
i then start tomcat and using the application manager i browse the war file to deploy, then click deploy. i get a message at the top of the browser saying 'OK'. yet if i look at my tomcat output in the terminal window i have the following error:

what am i doing wrong? how to fix this?
the war archive is corrupt or invalid.
check that the war generation procedure is not failing and that the war file is a valid zip file prior to copying to your pen drive etc.
if you're on windows you can do this by changing the file extension to .zip and opening with a zip program such as winzip or winrar.
if you're on another operating system you probably don't need to change the extension.
if the war is a valid zip it's probably being corrupted as a result of your transfer process ie going onto or from your pen drive.
It could be a file protection issue, which you can fix by issuing something like:
chmod 755 webapp.war
it happened to me that my sftp would just slap a 700 on the file transferred, causing that error.
This might be due to one of the following reasons.
Corrupted WAR file
Corrupted JAR files under WEB-INF/lib folder
First thing to check is if you have free space on your disk. If your partition is 100% full, then it will be impossible to extract the .WAR file.
have same error - with war all ok, restarting Tomcat resolve problem
so i think it's becouse Tomcat start deploy war before it fully uploaded
I had the same problem, and rebuilding/uploading the war was NOT fixing the problem. What I ended up doing to fix it was uploading the war under a different name, then renaming the war once it had successfully deployed. A bit bizarre that this would work, but it was a better solution for me than restarting tomcat.
also possibly because of an incorrect entry in solr.xml
It must point to where the .war file is located.
Also look out for file permissions of the .war file you have deployed. For me that was the cause.
In my case it was the manifest file.
Class-Path:
should followed by a whitespace.

I see that the exception you got is java.lang.ClassNotFoundException
Unless you are involved in dynamic class loading and using the Java Reflection API, chances are that the ClassNotFoundException error you are getting is not from your application code but from a referencing API. Another common problem pattern is a wrong packaging of your application code.
Check to see if all the jars are added to your classpath.
Also some jars depend on other jars for their working. In that case you will have to add those jars too !
look at the line 34 in main_package.my_spring.doGet(my_spring.java:34) and see if it is referenced from local class or from an API?
If project-> build automatically is on on your eclipse if using eclipse, then you must be having class file, else you might see errors in the explorer.
most probably the class that you are referencing is from an API, if not try add jars from your project build path.
I'm fighting the whole day with this:
I have DynamicWebProject. It worked fine. But at some point I desided to clean extra jar wich didn't used in project. After my cleaning, I've got a bunch of errors. So I rollback all my changes (I mean I retuned all jars back). But Also I played with Build Path of project, of Eclipse, of Debug config. Unfortunately I didn't remember this changes (with Path stuff). And when I run as at server, tomcat shows me this:

I'm real tied with this endless fight. What I'm doing wrong? What Eclipse and Tomcat tries to tell me?
Done.
So. How I restore functionality.
First of all, my project was backup in SVN repository.
Next I create new Workspace in Eclipse. new workspace in different folder. And Checkout project from SVN.
After that, at step - run at server, I caught errors, and added one by one missed libraries(jars). And whoa-la, it works!
So how I thought, problem resides in configuration of eclipce and project, also in Run/Debug Configuration. How to find errors in configuration, I don't know :( but I'll try at old workspace.
You are missing servlet-api.jar in your class path. Check it
UPDATED
1) Right click on project
2) Got to java build path
3) Click on add library in right hand side.
4) Choose server run time.
5) Click next and select your tom cat server.
6) Click on finish.
Then try again
Go to the Java Build Path, go to Libraries, click on Add Library, choose Server Runtime, click Next, choose your webserver and click Finish. Clean and deploy to see if it works.
When trying to view a specific page on my web site it comes up blank in the browser but in Eclipse a long error message is generated from tomcat.
The page that is coming up blank is not a page I have modified yet. I have modified some other pages and they are working fine but now that I have modified them this particular page is generating the errors when visiting it.
The error is very long so I'm just going to post what I believe to be the important parts. If more of the error is needed please let me know.
I've read through the error but I'm not sure what exactly the server is trying to tell me is wrong.
Hopefully some one will be able to point me in the right direction. Thank you ahead of time.

You must not deploy the jsp-api and servlet-api jars in your web app.
Doing so makes the container go bananas and can cause all manner of error messages, generally not related to anything that makes much immediate sense or that's related directly to your code.
When I start the application from Eclipse, I get the following error:

SEVERE: Error in resourceStart()
I've added a Tomcat 7.0.12 in Servers, and I added the app. in 'Configured' in the 'Add or Remove...' window. I've also tried with Tomcat 6.0.x.
I think I have a problem in some of the *xml files, but don't know which one to check or paste here first.
And to note that I can make a war file with Maven and when I deploy it and start it on a Tomcat server the app works. But from Eclipse I cannot start it.
You need to delete the tmp0 folder, bounce Eclipse and retry. This usually happens when Eclipse does not exit gracefully while the embedded server is running. You should stop the server before exiting Eclipse, that should help.
I recently deployed a war file.
I got the following error:

If anyone can help it would be great.
I think this is the cause:
java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/apache/xmlbeans/XmlObject
You're missing a JAR that contains the org.apache.xmlbeans.XmlObject.class file.
Download it from one of these sites and put it in the server /lib directory for your Tomcat installation.
What version of Tomcat are you using? Which JDK version?
