How to Overcome Spring and Jbehave Versioning Problem? - java

In our project we are using Spring 3.0.0.RELEASE, and now we are trying to add JBehave to our project.
Here the problem is JBehave latest 3.4.5(Release) version uses Spring 2.5.6 (spring-context, spring-test).
then we got problem in dependencies in maven.
is there any solution to continue our project with Spring version 3.0 and Jbehave Spring version 2.5.6 without any conflicts?

JBehave will probably also work with Spring 3.0. You could simply try to exclude the transitive dependency from JBehave. I didn't test this but it should look similar to this:
<dependencyManagement>
<dependencies>
...
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-core</artifactId>
<version>3.0</version>
<scope>compile</scope>
</dependency>
...
<dependency>
<groupId>org.jbehave</groupId>
<artifactId>jbehave</artifactId>
<version>3.4.5</version>
<scope>test</scope>
<exclusions>
<exclusion>
<groupId>org.springframework</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-context</artifactId>
</exclusion>
<exclusion>
<groupId>org.springframework</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-test</artifactId>
</exclusion>
</exclusions>
</dependency>
....
</dependencies>
</dependencyManagement>

Spring boot 2.2 activemq jetty conflict

I am trying to upgrade Spring boot to the version 2.2 together with jetty starter.
I get these errors due to jetty version conflict
The following method did not exist:
'org.eclipse.jetty.websocket.server.NativeWebSocketConfiguration org.eclipse.jetty.websocket.server.NativeWebSocketServletContainerInitializer.initialize(org.eclipse.jetty.servlet.ServletContextHandler)'
The method's class, org.eclipse.jetty.websocket.server.NativeWebSocketServletContainerInitializer, is available from the following locations:
jar:file:/some-dir/target/p3.0.166-SNAPSHOT.war!/WEB-INF/lib/jetty-all-9.4.19.v20190610-uber.jar!/org/eclipse/jetty/websocket/server/NativeWebSocketServletContainerInitializer.class

I have activemq dependency which brings in it's own jetty-all versioned 9.4.19 dependency which is in conflict with spring-boot 2.2 jetty (9.4.20)
And part of my pom.xml is:

This suggests to use a Glassfish implementation.

The one we used had an Apache implementation, so going with that.

Any idea how I can fix this?
ActiveMQ is wrong here.
jetty-all is not meant to be used as a dependency in a project.
See https://www.eclipse.org/lists/jetty-users/msg06030.html
It only exists as a command line tool for the documentation to educate folks about basic featureset of Jetty.
It does not, and cannot, contain all of Jetty.
A single artifact with everything that Jetty produces is impossible.
As #Shilan pointed out, excluding jetty-all is the correct solution.
The use of the other appropriate dependencies (by spring-boot-starter-jetty it seems) will already pull in the correct Jetty transitive dependencies that you need.
You can use $ mvn dependency:tree from the command line to see this (before and after excluding jetty-all)
You might want to run one of the duplicate class finder maven plugins to see what other duplicate classes you have going on and correct for those as well.

How can I remove the old vulnerable Apache commons collection version dependency from my project's maven dependency tree?

My Java app project is being managed by Maven.
My project has a few library dependencies depending again on Apache commons collection 3.2.1 which is vulnerable - e.g. Apache commons configuration, velocity, etc.
(I can see it is being used by running mvn dependency:tree command.)
I did neither write any line of codes using Apache commons collection directly nor defined the dependency of it, but it's being used.
What could I do to remove its dependency and to force to use safe version - 3.2.2, 4.1.
For your information:
JIRA Bug - Arbitrary remote code execution with InvokerTransformer
Here is the part of my pom.xml, and I guess there's nothing remarkable.
...
<dependency>
<groupId>commons-configuration</groupId>
<artifactId>commons-configuration</artifactId>
<version>1.6</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.apache.velocity</groupId>
<artifactId>velocity</artifactId>
<version>1.7</version>
</dependency>
...
Unless I am missing something obvious, just specifying dependency in your POM ought to be sufficient:
<dependencies>
<dependency>
<groupId>commons-collections</groupId>
<artifactId>commons-collections</artifactId>
<version>3.2.2</version>
<dependency>
...
</dependencies>
If you specify it a the top of your <dependencies> section, it will override any other transitive inclusion of commons-collections.
Of course, you may wind up with incompatibilities where other dependencies depend on the other version, but that's what unit tests are for, right? ;-)
What you need to do is exclude commons-collections from the affected dependencies and include the desired version in your dependencies directly.
Example pom.xml excerpt assuming commons-configuration uses the vulnerable commons-collections
<dependency>
<groupId>commons-configuration</groupId>
<artifactId>commons-configuration</artifactId>
<version>1.10</version>
<exclusions>
<exclusion>
<artifactId>commons-collections</artifactId>
<groupId>commons-collections</groupId>
</exclusion>
</exclusions>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>commons-collections</groupId>
<artifactId>commons-collections</artifactId>
<version>3.2.2</version>
<scope>runtime</scope>
</dependency>
For simplicity I didn't show configuring this in a root pom.xml in the dependency-management section.
The <scope> should be set to runtime since you mentioned not using the library directly.
I've added these lines in my pom.xml, but still commons-collections3.2 is getting downloaded..
<dependencies>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.apache.commons</groupId>
<artifactId>commons-collections4</artifactId>
<version>4.1</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.apache.commons</groupId>
<artifactId>commons-lang3</artifactId>
<version>${apachecommonslang.version}</version>

MAVEN BUILD FAILURE - Could not resolve dependencies for project XYZ

Is this versions problem ?
try adding maven dependency for spring-aop with the below:
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-aop</artifactId>
<version>2.5.2</version>
</dependency>
or
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-aop</artifactId>
<version>3.0.5.RELEASE</version>
</dependency>
i guess one of this should work
No versions available for org.springframework:spring-aop:jar:[2.5.2,3)
Meaning jersey-spring needs spring-aop 2.5<= version < 3
So jersey-spring 1.8 and spring 3.0.5 are incompatible
I would try the following:
Look for newer version of jersey-spring that works with spring 3.0.5.
Maybe jersey-spring3 as suggested by peeskillet above.
Try my luck with spring 3.0.5 by adding exclusions to jersey-spring dependency.
Consult the pom here and including them with version 3.0.5 if needed.
Thanks All for your answers, Learnt lot from your answers.
BUT FOLLOWING CHANGE IN MY POM MADE MY CODE RUN:
Addition of ,
<exclusion>
<groupId>org.springframework</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-aop</artifactId>
</exclusion>

Error on EJB upgrade to JBoss AS 7

I'm trying to upgrade the EJB module to work with JBoss AS 7 and after including all the libraries I thought might make a difference I'm sitll getting this error:
Error(20,33): package org.jboss.ejb3.annotation does not exist
on:
import org.jboss.ejb3.annotation.TransactionTimeout;
Can anyone tell me how to fix this?
Are you using Maven? If so, adding these dependencies to your POM may be helpful:
<dependency>
<groupId>org.jboss.spec</groupId>
<artifactId>jboss-javaee-6.0</artifactId>
<version>3.0.0.Final</version>
<type>pom</type>
<scope>provided</scope>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.jboss</groupId>
<artifactId>crc-jboss-client-all</artifactId>
<type>pom</type>
<version>5.1.0.GA</version>
<exclusions>
<exclusion>
<groupId>org.slf4j</groupId>
<artifactId>slf4j-api</artifactId>
</exclusion>
<exclusion>
<groupId>org.jboss.slf4j</groupId>
<artifactId>slf4j-jboss-logging</artifactId>
</exclusion>
</exclusions>
</dependency>
Although you were using JDeveloper; I had the same issue doing a build with Maven. The dependency comes from jboss-annotations-ejb3.
Jon's answer didn't match the dependencies for jboss-annotations-ejb3. Therefore for Maven I added this to the pom.xml. May help some others.
<dependency>
<groupId>jboss</groupId>
<artifactId>jboss-annotations-ejb3</artifactId>
<version>4.2.2.GA</version>
</dependency>

Setting up Spring MVC using pom.xml, with slfj logging and leaks

Below is what I have in my pom.xml, any comments or improvments? (this is for a spring mvc application)
Do I still need to exclude commons logging to use slf4j?
<!-- Spring -->
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-context</artifactId>
<version>${org.springframework-version}</version>
<exclusions>
<!-- Exclude Commons Logging in favor of SLF4j -->
<exclusion>
<groupId>commons-logging</groupId>
<artifactId>commons-logging</artifactId>
</exclusion>
</exclusions>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-webmvc</artifactId>
<version>${org.springframework-version}</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-orm</artifactId>
<version>${org.springframework-version}</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-core</artifactId>
<version>${org.springframework-version}</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-test</artifactId>
<version>${org.springframework-version}</version>
</dependency>
I've had this in a project like this for about 1 year now, and not sure if things have changed or need updating (especially around setting up the logging).
One thing I hate is when using IntelliJ and jetty (that reloads the project every x seconds), is that I get java out of memory (perm gen) errors and I believe it is because of a leak in the logging in the spring framework.
You should exclude commons-logging only when you have jcl-over-slf4j included. See for more info: http://static.springsource.org/spring/docs/3.0.x/spring-framework-reference/html/overview.html#d0e787
About leaks: as far I understand there is not proper fix -- you could increase memory, but it will crash later. This is one of problems which JRebel may help to reduce.
