Java RMI with Scala, is this possible? - java

Java RMI -Remote Method Invocation- is Java to Java only.
On the Scala website I read that the integration with Java is seamless and that:
Scala programs run on the Java VM, are byte code compatible with Java so you can make full use of existing Java libraries or existing application code. You can call Scala from Java and you can call Java from Scala, the integration is seamless.
Does this mean that I can successfully use a Java to Scala RMI?
Did anyone experiment this first-hand?

Yes, this can be done. The rmi compiler works with java byte code, so the language used really doesn't matter. I've done this for a class project.

It would depend on what RMI library you are using but in general, the answer is "Yes." Although, note that if you write a method that returns (for example) a Scala collection like scala.collections.immutable.List, then your calling Java code will probably not be able to convert that to a java.util.List.

Java Projects on Django?

ok, So i searched net for the possible implementation but all that I managed to find is Django projects implementation on Java platform through Jython. But I want to do the reverse, i.e. implement/integrate java project ( which in my case is SAIKU server ) on Django platform.
The question being, is it possible, and if yes, then kindly point me to the solution.

For your specific requirement, I would suggest using RESTFul API to access the Saiku Server.
However if you need to run Java Classes from Python.
Here are the options available for you:
JCC -- a C++ code generator for calling Java from C++/Python. It produces producing Python extensions which communicate via JNI with a Java virtual machine. As it implies, this would require compilations of every possible call. However this project is backbone of PyLucene project.
CodeMesh. C++ code generator for Java.
Py4J Python programs running in a Python interpreter to dynamically access Java objects in a Java Virtual Machine.
JPype allow python programs full access to java class libraries. It is done through interfacing at the native level in both Virtual Machines. However there are no recent development in this front.
In general, having an loosly coupled integration through REST or RCP would be easy to maintain than tightly coupled JNI based implementation.
There's no way to run Java within the Python runtime (which is what it sounds like you want). There are Java to Python "translators" available, but they're terrible. Honestly, if you need a Java server and Django to sit inside the same process for some reason, Jython is the way to go.
There are lots of options outside of that though, off the top of my head:
Implement Python bindings for your server (See PyLucene for an example)
Implement a socket server within your Java server that Python can talk to directly

Use python library in java code

There is some library called pymorphy written in python. Unfortunately, for java there is not any library with the similar functionality - natural language processing for Russian lang. So I need to invoke some methods of pymorphy library from Java code.
First I've tried to solve this problem with Jython. But I've spent 2 days and the goal was not accomplished because python modules cdb, bsddb3, sqlite are written in C and they will not work with Jython.
Now I want to run some python light-weight server with pymorphy for handling request from Java code.
How could I implement this kind of java-python interaction with the maximum production performance? Or is there more simple way to call python from java?

I haven't used it beyond small projects, but it works as advertised, allowing one to call CPython transparently from Java. If you have the opposite problem, needing to call Java from CPython, definitely check out JPype. I've used it extensively and it works very well.

Convert Java jar file in to cpp

I have a java code and created a jar file.
I need to create an Qt application. Can I use this code in that application?

You could take a look at the capabilities of GCC/GCJ (see http://gcc.gnu.org/ ). IF it's a good idea is a whole other story, and depends on what you have, and what you're trying to accomplish. It should be doable to link SO's created with GCJ in QT applications, but I seriously wonder if you are not better off using either C++ or Java, but not mixing them
If your Java code takes input from stdin or some file and writes output to stdout or some file, then the easiest way is to fork java to run that jar, and parse the output in your Qt code.
Things other than that, you'll need to be a bit specific. Something like "my Java code does painting the screen".
My advice is to use SWT or Swing.
You can use gcj gcj to compile the java code to library and simply call the functions of the java code from your C code.
Yes, you can use your jar file in your Qt application. I've done exactly this myself.
One way is to use the JNI Invocation API. This is part of the Java Native Interface (JNI), which makes it feasible but not pleasant to access Java APIs from C++.
A much more pleasant approach is to use CodeMesh JunC++ion, which wraps the Java APIs in C++ classes. This is a great product, if you can afford it.
If you have very little Java code, it may be easier to port it to C++.

Calling Java library from Objective C on Mac

I want to create native Mac OS X application using Cocoa + Objective C but I need to connect to proprietary data source, and for this, owner of the data source only provides Java library. So I need to somehow import this Java library into my project and call functions on its Java classes.(Or create java wrapper around this library and then call my wrapper from objective-C).
Now, how can I do this? Quick google search leads me to JNI but I haven't found any good and actual(current) article/tutorial. I would really need some HOW TO article, how to load this java library, start VM if needed, and how to create java objects and call functions on them. Really something simple and I can move from there. Thanks.

You're probably looking for the Invocation API, a little-known corner of Java Native Interface (JNI) which allows you to load the Java runtime in-process.
That said, you might have an easier time of it with a Java service application that communicates with your Objective-C application over network sockets.
You're looking for the Java-Objective C bridge, try looking at this article or on Apple's developer site. Be aware it is deprecated, that is it isn't being kept up to date with changes to Cocoa. But if you're just using it for an API passing standard Java datatypes you should be OK.

Java Wrapper to Perl/Python code

I have to deploy some Web Services on a server that only supports the Java ones, but some of them will be done using perl or python. I want to know if is possible to develop a Java wrapper to call a specific code written in perl or python. So, I want to have all the Web Services in Java, but some of them will call some code using other languages.

This depends heavily upon your needs. If Jython is an option for the Python code (it isn't always 100% compatible), then it is probably the best option there. Otherwise, you will need to use Java's Process Builder to call the interpretters directly and return the results on their output stream. This will not be fast (but then again, Jython isn't that fast either, relative to regular Java code), but it is an extremely flexible solution.
For the Python part of it you can use Jython to run Python code right from your Java virtual machine. It'll integrate fully with your Java code as a bonus.
For Perl, use Inline::Java. There are several options for integrating the code; you can call a separate process or you can use an embedded interpreter.
For Python you can use the Java Scripting API.
A Perl implementation is sadly still missing.
There's something I used a while back called Jython which allows you to execute Python code from Java. It was a little quirky, but I got it to do what I needed.
