Sometimes when writing a class you'll need some helper methods that take care of some simple stuff (change a string in a certain way or do some simple calculations).
If helper functionalities are small enough (and not needed by any other class) it makes sense to write a helper method in this class.
Now: assuming you'll need no access to any member variables, would it be better do make this method private or private static
the following example: just implements a method that checks if a string is not null and contains foo.

Are there pros and cons in making the method static or non-static. Is there a general do and don't?

I would personally make the method static - it makes it clearer that it doesn't depend on the state of the object. That can have knock-on effects in terms of thread safety (although if it were to access static members of the type, you'd need to be careful of that).
Given that it's private, you don't need to worry about whether or not subclasses would want to override it.
You can always make it non-static later - I think the only side-effect of that would be to potentially change the serialization ID. (Binary serialization is a pain like that.)

Make it non-static if it needs access to non-static member variables, and make it static if it doesn't.

Cleanest way to wrap Java static methods in a non-static object (refactoring to allow mocking)

I'm working with Java and Kotlin, and the codebase has some legacy static logic which really should be in objects, but is too deeply tangled to make non-static now. I want to be able to cleanly test (using mocks of these static dependencies) some (non-static) classes that depend on this static logic, so I want to wrap the static logic classes in non-static dummy wrappers, i.e. instantiatable objects whose instance methods just call their static counterparts. I'll then mock these wrappers in unit tests (I don't want to just use static mocking).
The manual way to do this is for each static logic class Foo with method public static void bar(), define a new class FooWrapper with method public void bar() that just calls Foo.bar(), instantiate a FooWrapper at the top of my class, and switch all the current calls to Foo.bar() to instead call fooWrapperInstance.bar().
The above works fine but involves a lot of boring Wrapper classes that do nothing but pass calls. Is there some syntactic sugar (either Java or Kotlin is fine, but it has to work with Java) that will create, or at least shorten, these wrapper classes for me? I'm familiar with Guava's ForwardingObject but it seems to only work when the underlying logic is in an instance already, which mine is not.
The shortest way to write your wrappers would be to use the method references as follows.
Say you have this Java class

I have more than 20 commonly used methods in my application. I would like to move that 20 methods into a common class.

Methods are not data, but code. Where code is stored does not depend on whether a method accepts an implicit this parameter or not. If you use the singleton approach, method code will still occupy storage and additionally there will be an instance on the heap.
However, all of the above is irrelevant and you are focusing on a completely wrong aspect of your design. What matters is how the decision will affect the code which uses these methods:
static methods are simple and a great choice for pure functions (which don't depend on any external state);
singletons allow polymorphism, therefore make the methods easier to mock for testing.
You should think about the "best" way in terms of design.
If the methods are used for general purposes, making them static is preferable, as you won't have any state to store and you'll save memory this way.
You should consider other things before deciding if you want to use static methods in your utility class or not. On one hand the utility class will be very easy to test, and it's highly accessible. On the other hand, it's very hard to mock static methods in your test.
If I have a utility class, I would write it as follows:

"Common functions" is not quite accurate. It really depends on what you want to do, for example when I make some string utils I make StringUtils class and it has what I need. Whether to make it static or not depends on data to be processed, if one information might be used more than once for a call then answer is simple - use instances.
That depends on what the methods do.
If those methods are just helper methods, that do not alter state then static is probably better because that way you do not have to create an object every time you want to use one of the methods. You can just call Common.method()
However, if the object has state then you should rater use object methods and create a new object when you want to use the methods.

You can access private fields and methods in other classes, but the whole point is that you're not supposed to. They're private.
So the correct thing to do is make them available to other classes by making them public. In the case of fields (rather than methods), you might do that with accessor methods.
But, if you really had to access private fields or methods, you can do it via java.lang.reflect.

But again, you shouldn't do this without a really good reason. Fix the design instead.
We Should Not try to access directly the private members of a class in another class. This will altogether violate the rule of Access Modifiers. Moreover if you really want to access, you can make use of Reflection API provided.
Generally, in order to get the private class variables, you can create public setters and getters in order to access then outside that class.
By design you cannot. Revise the class so the method you want to call is visible to A.
That said, you can use reflection to access methods, fields etc inside B, but you cannot easily just do it with "B.call()" which most likely is what you would like to do.

When to use static methods

I am wondering when to use static methods? Say if I have a class with a few getters and setters, a method or two, and I want those methods only to be invokable on an instance object of the class. Does this mean I should use a static method?
Example:

One rule-of-thumb: ask yourself "Does it make sense to call this method, even if no object has been constructed yet?" If so, it should definitely be static.
So in a class Car you might have a method:
double convertMpgToKpl(double mpg)
...which would be static, because one might want to know what 35mpg converts to, even if nobody has ever built a Car. But this method (which sets the efficiency of one particular Car):
void setMileage(double mpg)
...can't be static since it's inconceivable to call the method before any Car has been constructed.
(By the way, the converse isn't always true: you might sometimes have a method which involves two Car objects, and still want it to be static. E.g.:
Car theMoreEfficientOf(Car c1, Car c2)
Although this could be converted to a non-static version, some would argue that since there isn't a "privileged" choice of which Car is more important, you shouldn't force a caller to choose one Car as the object you'll invoke the method on. This situation accounts for a fairly small fraction of all static methods, though.
Define static methods in the following scenarios only:
If you are writing utility classes and they are not supposed to be changed.
If the method is not using any instance variable.
If any operation is not dependent on instance creation.
If there is some code that can easily be shared by all the instance methods, extract that code into a static method.
If you are sure that the definition of the method will never be changed or overridden. As static methods can not be overridden.
There are some valid reasons to use static methods:
Performance: if you want some code to be run, and don't want to instantiate an extra object to do so, shove it into a static method. The JVM also can optimize static methods a lot (I think I've once read James Gosling declaring that you don't need custom instructions in the JVM, since static methods will be just as fast, but couldn't find the source - thus it could be completely false). Yes, it is micro-optimization, and probably unneeded. And we programmers never do unneeded things just because they are cool, right?
Practicality: instead of calling new Util().method(arg), call Util.method(arg), or method(arg) with static imports. Easier, shorter.
Adding methods: you really wanted the class String to have a removeSpecialChars() instance method, but it's not there (and it shouldn't, since your project's special characters may be different from the other project's), and you can't add it (since Java is somewhat sane), so you create an utility class, and call removeSpecialChars(s) instead of s.removeSpecialChars(). Sweet.
Purity: taking some precautions, your static method will be a pure function, that is, the only thing it depends on is its parameters. Data in, data out. This is easier to read and debug, since you don't have inheritance quirks to worry about. You can do it with instance methods too, but the compiler will help you a little more with static methods (by not allowing references to instance attributes, overriding methods, etc.).
You'll also have to create a static method if you want to make a singleton, but... don't. I mean, think twice.
Now, more importantly, why you wouldn't want to create a static method? Basically, polymorphism goes out of the window. You'll not be able to override the method, nor declare it in an interface (pre-Java 8). It takes a lot of flexibility out from your design. Also, if you need state, you'll end up with lots of concurrency bugs and/or bottlenecks if you are not careful.
After reading Misko's articles I believe that static methods are bad from a testing point of view. You should have factories instead(maybe using a dependency injection tool like Guice).

You would use a static method if the method does not use any fields (or only static fields) of a class.
If any non-static fields of a class are used you must use a non-static method.
Static methods should be called on the Class, Instance methods should be called on the Instances of the Class. But what does that mean in reality? Here is a useful example:
A car class might have an instance method called Accelerate(). You can only Accelerate a car, if the car actually exists (has been constructed) and therefore this would be an instance method.
A car class might also have a count method called GetCarCount(). This would return the total number of cars created (or constructed). If no cars have been constructed, this method would return 0, but it should still be able to be called, and therefore it would have to be a static method.

A common use for static methods is to access static fields.
But you can have static methods, without referencing static variables. Helper methods without referring static variable can be found in some java classes like java.lang.Math

If you need to access method on an instance object of the class, your method should should be non static.
Oracle documentation page provides more details.

Whenever you do not want to create an object to call a method in your code just declare that method as static. Since the static method does not need an instance to be called with but the catch here is not all static methods are called by JVM automatically. This privilege is enjoyed only by the main() "public static void main[String... args]" method in java because at Runtime this is the method Signature public "static" void main[] sought by JVM as an entry point to start execution of the code.

The only reasonable place to use static methods are probably Math functions, and of course main() must be static, and maybe small factory-methods. But logic should not be kept in static methods.

There have been a few questions asked here about why you can't define static methods within interfaces, but none of them address a basic inconsistency: why can you define static fields and static inner types within an interface, but not static methods?
Static inner types perhaps aren't a fair comparison, since that's just syntactic sugar that generates a new class, but why fields but not methods?
An argument against static methods within interfaces is that it breaks the virtual table resolution strategy used by the JVM, but shouldn't that apply equally to static fields, i.e. the compiler can just inline it?
Consistency is what I desire, and Java should have either supported no statics of any form within an interface, or it should be consistent and allow them.
An official proposal has been made to allow static methods in interfaces in Java 7. This proposal is being made under Project Coin.
My personal opinion is that it's a great idea. There is no technical difficulty in implementation, and it's a very logical, reasonable thing to do. There are several proposals in Project Coin that I hope will never become part of the Java language, but this is one that could clean up a lot of APIs. For example, the Collections class has static methods for manipulating any List implementation; those could be included in the List interface.
Update: In the Java Posse Podcast #234, Joe D'arcy mentioned the proposal briefly, saying that it was "complex" and probably would not make it in under Project Coin.
Update: While they didn't make it into Project Coin for Java 7, Java 8 does support static functions in interfaces.
I'm going to go with my pet theory with this one, which is that the lack of consistency in this case is a matter of convenience rather than design or necessity, since I've heard no convincing argument that it was either of those two.
Static fields are there (a) because they were there in JDK 1.0, and many dodgy decisions were made in JDK 1.0, and (b) static final fields in interfaces are the closest thing java had to constants at the time.
Static inner classes in interfaces were allowed because that's pure syntactic sugar - the inner class isn't actually anything to do with the parent class.
So static methods aren't allowed simply because there's no compelling reason to do so; consistency isn't sufficiently compelling to change the status quo.
Of course, this could be permitted in future JLS versions without breaking anything.
There is never a point to declaring a static method in an interface. They cannot be executed by the normal call MyInterface.staticMethod(). (EDIT:Since that last sentence confused some people, calling MyClass.staticMethod() executes precisely the implementation of staticMethod on MyClass, which if MyClass is an interface cannot exist!) If you call them by specifying the implementing class MyImplementor.staticMethod() then you must know the actual class, so it is irrelevant whether the interface contains it or not.
More importantly, static methods are never overridden, and if you try to do:

var.staticMethod();
the rules for static say that the method defined in the declared type of var must be executed. Since this is an interface, this is impossible.
You can of course always remove the static keyword from the method. Everything will work fine. You may have to suppress some warnings if it is called from an instance method.
To answer some of the comments below, the reason you can't execute "result=MyInterface.staticMethod()" is that it would have to execute the version of the method defined in MyInterface. But there can't be a version defined in MyInterface, because it's an interface. It doesn't have code by definition.
The purpose of interfaces is to define a contract without providing an implementation. Therefore, you can't have static methods, because they'd have to have an implementation already in the interface since you can't override static methods. As to fields, only static final fields are allowed, which are, essentially, constants (in 1.5+ you can also have enums in interfaces). The constants are there to help define the interface without magic numbers.
BTW, there's no need to explicitly specify static final modifiers for fields in interfaces, because only static final fields are allowed.
This is an old thread , but this is something very important question for all. Since i noticed this today only so i am trying to explain it in cleaner way:
The main purpose of interface is to provide something that is unimplementable, so if they provide
static methods to be allowed
then you can call that method using interfaceName.staticMethodName(), but this is unimplemented method and contains nothing. So it is useless to allow static methods. Therefore they do not provide this at all.
static fields are allowed
because fields are not implementable, by implementable i mean you can not perform any logical operation in field, you can do operation on field. So you are not changing behavior of field that is why they are allowed.
Inner classes are allowed
Inner classes are allowed because after compilation different class file of the Inner class is created say InterfaceName$InnerClassName.class , so basically you are providing implementation in different entity all together but not in interface. So implementation in Inner classes is provided.

Actually sometimes there are reasons someone can benefit from static methods. They can be used as factory methods for the classes that implement the interface. For example that's the reason we have Collection interface and the Collections class in openjdk now. So there are workarounds as always - provide another class with a private constructor which will serve as a "namespace" for the static methods.
Prior to Java 5, a common usage for static fields was:

Using implements in this way is ultimately confusing.
Now with Java 5, we have the import static syntax to achieve the same effect:

There is no real reason for not having static methods in interfaces except: the Java language designers did not want it like that.
From a technical standpoint it would make sense to allow them. After all an abstract class can have them as well. I assume but did not test it, that you can "hand craft" byte code where the interface has a static method and it should imho work with no problems to call the method and/or to use the interface as usually.
I often wonder why static methods at all? They do have their uses, but package/namespace level methods would probably cover 80 of what static methods are used for.
Two main reasons spring to mind:
Static methods in Java cannot be overridden by subclasses, and this is a much bigger deal for methods than static fields. In practice, I've never even wanted to override a field in a subclass, but I override methods all the time. So having static methods prevents a class implementing the interface from supplying its own implementation of that method, which largely defeats the purpose of using an interface.
Interfaces aren't supposed to have code; that's what abstract classes are for. The whole point of an interface is to let you talk about possibly-unrelated objects which happen to all have a certain set of methods. Actually providing an implementation of those methods is outside the bounds of what interfaces are intended to be.
Static methods are tied to a class. In Java, an interface is not technically a class, it is a type, but not a class (hence, the keyword implements, and interfaces do not extend Object). Because interfaces are not classes, they cannot have static methods, because there is no actual class to attach to.
You may call InterfaceName.class to get the Class Object corresponding to the interface, but the Class class specifically states that it represents classes and interfaces in a Java application. However, the interface itself is not treated as a class, and hence you cannot attach a static method.
Only static final fields may be declared in an interface (much like methods, which are public even if you don't include the "public" keyword, static fields are "final" with or without the keyword).
These are only values, and will be copied literally wherever they are used at compile time, so you never actually "call" static fields at runtime. Having a static method would not have the same semantics, since it would involve calling an interface without an implementation, which Java does not allow.
The reason is that all methods defined in an interface are abstract whether or not you explicitly declare that modifier. An abstract static method is not an allowable combination of modifiers since static methods are not able to be overridden.
As to why interfaces allow static fields. I have a feeling that should be considered a "feature". The only possibility I can think of would be to group constants that implementations of the interface would be interested in.
I agree that consistency would have been a better approach. No static members should be allowed in an interface.
I believe that static methods can be accessed without creating an object and the interface does not allow creating an object as to restrict the programmers from using the interface methods directly rather than from its implemented class.
But if you define a static method in an interface, you can access it directly without its implementation. Thus static methods are not allowed in interfaces.
I don't think that consistency should be a concern.
Java 1.8 interface static method is visible to interface methods only, if we remove the methodSta1() method from the InterfaceExample class,
we won’t be able to use it for the InterfaceExample object. However like other static methods, we can use interface static methods using class name.
For example, a valid statement will be:
exp1.methodSta1();
So after looking below example we can say :
1) Java interface static method is part of interface, we can’t use it for implementation class objects.
2) Java interface static methods are good for providing utility methods, for example null check, collection sorting ,log etc.
3) Java interface static method helps us in providing security by not allowing implementation classes (InterfaceExample) to override them.
4) We can’t define interface static method for Object class methods, we will get compiler error as “This static method cannot hide the instance method from Object”. This is because it’s not allowed in java, since Object is the base class for all the classes and we can’t have one class level static method and another instance method with same signature.
5) We can use java interface static methods to remove utility classes such as Collections and move all of it’s static methods to the corresponding interface,
that would be easy to find and use.
