Re-building a deleted class file in Eclipse - java

I accidentally deleted a .class (Java bytecode) file in my project (on the filesystem, not using Eclipse itself). Easy to fix, right? Just re-build it. But that doesn't work! Even if I select "Build Project" or "Build All" or "Build Automatically" from the "Project" menu, nothing actually happens on the file system, and I still get:
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError
I just want to re-compile this from the source code I already have!
By the way, when I choose "Clean..." from the "Project" menu, Eclipse doesn't delete any files either. I have also tried re-importing the project into a different folder, but Eclipse just copies all the .class files and the problem persists.

The OP answered his own question in the comments (2 and a half years ago):
Found the solution: another project on which that project depended could not be compiled, because it could not be cleaned, because Eclipse wanted to delete the .svn directories throughout that project (I have no idea why), and it could not because some of the files didn't have write permission. IF the OP's answer didn't resolve your issue, you should ask a more specific question on a new post, describing what you've attempted and how the OP's solution didn't resolve your specific issue.
That being said, assuming you did try the solution the OP posted, it is possible a different issue (that wasn't caused by deleting a class file) is causing the same error. Because you started a bounty on someone else's question and you can't get your prestige back I thought it would be appropriate to mention it might be worth your time to make sure your JDK version(s) are compatible between old or external source code used in your project. You'll get the same error NoClassDefFoundError when the compiler reaches a point in your code that references an object/class that's defined in a library that was developed on an incompatible JDK, it's missing key internal dependencies that are not found within your JDK version.
I would go into more detail, but since this question is specifically about an error that came about from deleting a class file I don't feel it's right to do so.

Do a complete clean
1) Find and delete the .eclipse folder (you may back them up first)
2) Delete related .class files
3) If there are any .svn folders, delete them either manually or via your svn client
4) Do not use auto build for this, but manually select only the broken project and do a clean (in case there are dependencies)
If that fails, probably a good idea to package your source codes and re-import as a new project. That can avoid wasting time on a probable IDE bug

In more traditional languages, programs are loaded all at once as part of the startup process. Java doesn’t have this problem because it takes a different approach to loading. This is one of the activities that become easier, because everything in Java is an object. Remember that the compiled code for each class exists in its own separate file. That file isn’t loaded until the code is needed. In general, you can say that “class code is loaded at the point of first use.” This is usually when the first object of that class is constructed, but loading also occurs when a static field or static method is accessed.
If You can't restore from local history. Then you are out of Luck. Use Source Control Management Tools like SVN or Git to avoid such surprises next time.
If you are having source file try to compile file along with dependencies alone in console or other IDE and copy that class file let the errors be errors now edit source file in eclipse try to build again. Hopefully this will not work because even eclipse will neglect Re-compiling some files while building Project. Better Give a Try.

You sure this source file is in your project's source set? Because Eclipse will only compile and put it in your classpath in that case. Right click the project in Package Explorer, Properties -> Java Build Path -> Source. The enclosing folder should be there or Eclipse won't compile it.
In case, say, this source file of yours was once in source set and was compiled that could explain why it was working up until you removed the binary.
In order for this problem not to happen I suggest having Scrub output folders when cleaning projects being selected in Java -> Compiler -> Building and Build automatically... on in Project menu.
Also make sure your project compilation/build succeeds, otherwise Eclipse may not compile all the classes.
If it still doesn't help it could be important what type of project you are having problems with: Java Project, Maven Project, Gradle Project, etc.

To the person that put the bount out, maybe you could just commit all your changes to what ever code repository you have, after exiting eclispe just delete the whole workspace, then create a new workspace and re import all the files into the new workspace from your code repository.

Eclipse Validation Outside of /src folder

This is my first post on stackoverflow, so I apologize if I do anything incorrectly!
I have a project I've been working on in eclipse 4.6.2 ee neon2. In this workspace folder, I have several other folders such as one that includes my database files, and another called "lib" that includes open source libraries such as joda-time and eclipselink. I'll usually export zip files straight into this "lib" folder, and import the relevant external libraries into eclipselink from this "lib" folder. However, just tonight - I'm not sure how it happened, but eclipse generated some 500 warnings/errors on html/xml files from various open source libraries in the "lib" folder - including readme.html's and so on. I've been unable to find the reason for why they all suddenly appeared. I've tried to disable validation extensively which removes nearly all the errors but I feel that that's a patch up job.
Also note that my program seems to run completely fine, and passes all tests I've written for it. There are no new errors in the src folder, all in that one folder "lib".
My question is what I possibly could have done to make these 500+ errors appear out of thin air? Should eclipse even be generating errors on files outside of the /src folder that is contained in my project directory?
Please let me know where I'm unclear or what I can provide to help things be more clear as I've not had much traditional programming experience and can have trouble phrasing things in the correct way.

Double Edit - I do realize if I remove the "lib" folder altogether, and import the external jar's, this entire problem would be resolved. However I'd like to know whether the error detection outside of /src is the intended behavior of eclipse. Thanks again!
Edit many days later - SOLUTION: I had found the solution myself, which was identical to Exclude directories & subdirectories from validation in Eclipse. I had to clean my project to get the exclude rules to apply!
When I posted this question, my solution was to recreate the project and add back all the external libraries.
I then stumbled upon this problem, months later, attempting to put my external libraries in a folder called /lib/ in the same directory as my project in eclipse. This triggered a similar flood of warnings in the screenshots in the post.
The proper solution, to avoid the errors while keeping your external libraries in the same folder, was identical to the solution I found here: Exclude directories & subdirectories from validation in Eclipse.
I had to clean my project to get the exclude rules to apply, but after that worked like a charm, and all the errors cleared up.

Eclipse not recognizing changes in code

A friend and I are working on a java project in Eclipse. Whenever we "ship" a new version we export it to a runnable jar.
It seems whenever we try to send the file back and forth (over google drive) to work on separate parts of it something gets messed up. This doesn't happen for him, but when I download the file from Google Drive, Eclipse does not recognize any change I make to the src.
It doesn't matter how many times I change the workspace, move/ rename the file, clean/ build the project. Nothing seems to be solving this problem. Any advice on why this is happening and how to fix it?
It would be infinitely better for the both of you if you looked into some kind of source control system, as opposed to a file sent through a file sharing service.
Sharing the source code in a JAR doesn't allow you to:
Keep a revision of known working code, in case something breaks
Reliably import the code
Keep track of changes (who did what to what file, etc)
Look into something that's suitable for sharing between users. GitHub and BitBucket both offer free Git hosting, which is a very popular source versioning tool.
Eclipse is probably building the new version of the runnable JAR in the project's output directory, which by default is something like %PROJECTDIR%/target. The new version of the JAR with your changes will be there, and you'll have to export them again to trade files back again. See also: How do I change a Java project's bin folder in Eclipse?
it is probably because it is not updating yours .class, try delete .class of "target" folder of your project, make clean (project - clean) and save again the changes

In my case, I have tried much more and I got to resolve it by removing Classes, test-classes folders if Its there in Target folder

Java Error when i press button [duplicate]

This error is just bizarre, my code compiles fine, I can see there are no problems with it, yet this error has just popped up. I have tried re-starting NetBeans and there is no additional exception information.
What can cause this?
If it is Netbeans, try to uncheck "Compile on save" setting in the project properties (Build -> Compiling). This is the only thing which helped me in a similar situation.
I guess you are using an IDE (like Netbeans) which allows you to run the code even if certain classes are not compilable. During the application's runtime, if you access this class it would lead to this exception.
It's caused by NetBeans retaining some of the old source and/or compiled code in its cache and not noticing that e.g. some of the code's dependencies (i.e. referenced packages) have changed, and that a proper refresh/recompile of the file would be in order.
The solution is to force that refresh by either:
a) locating & editing the offending source file to force its recompilation (e.g. add a dummy line, save, remove it, save again),
b) doing a clean build (sometimes will work, sometimes won't),
c) disabling "Compile on save" (not recommended, since it can make using the IDE a royal PITA), or
d) simply remove NetBeans cache by hand, forcing the recompilation.
As to how to remove the cache:
If you're using an old version of NetBeans:
delete everything related to your project in .netbeans/6.9/var/cache/index/ (replace 6.9 with your version).
If you're using a newer one:
delete everything related to your project in AppData/Local/NetBeans/Cache/8.1/index/ (replace 8.1 with your version).
The paths may vary a little e.g. on different platforms, but the idea is still the same.
I also got the same error and I did clean build and it worked.

Recheck the package declarations in all your classes!
This behaviour has been observed in NetBeans, when the package declaration in one of the classes of the package refers to a non-existent or wrong package. NetBeans normally detects and highlights this error but has been known to fail and misleadingly report the package as free of errors when this is not the case.
I had the same issue with one of my netbeans project.
Check whether you have correctly put the package name on all the classes. I got the same error message because i forgot to put the package name of a certain class (which was copied from another project).
Disable Deploy on Save in the Project's Properties/Run screen. That's what worked for me finally. Why the hell NetBeans screws this up is beyond me.
Note: I was able to compile the file it was complaining about using right-click in NetBeans. Apparently it wasn't really compiling it when I used Build & Compile since that gave no errors at all. But then after that, the errors just moved to another java class file. I couldn't compile then since it was grayed out. I also tried deleting the build and dist directories in my NetBeans project files but that didn't help either.
Organize your code as a maven module.
Once done run the command from terminal
$mvn installl
to check if your code builds fine.
Finally import the project in netbeans or eclipse as maven project.
change the package of classes, your files are probably in the wrong package, happened to me when I copied the code from a friend, it was the default package and mine was another, hence the netbeans could not compile because of it.
I had this problem with NetBeans 8.0.1. Messages about problem in project deleted class. Deleting the ~/.netbeans didn't work. Also I looked for ANY reference to the deleted class in ALL my projects, nothing found. I deleted the build classes, everything. Then, when I started Netbeans again, compile and magically appears the message in Run and into the mother compiled class. I tried the uncheck "Compile on save" Dime solution, and works, but it's not practical.
Finally, my solution was edit and force recompile of the mother class. This way the new .class doesn't contains the message and Run works OK.
Just check the packaging, the simplest answer I can provide is that your package has been mislabeled (within a class).
Also, you may have some weird characters. Try white-flushing the code in a Notepad (or Gedit) and then pasting it into a newly created class with your IDE.
If you are using Netbeans, try to hit the Clean and Build button, let it do the thing and try again. Worked for me!
I had the same problem. My error was the packaging. So I would suggest you first check the package name and if the class is in the correct package.
Implementing my own functional interfaces resolved this for me (so instead of using java.util.function.* just create your own single-method interface with the parameters and return-type you want).

Android : source not found [duplicate]

While debugging a java app in eclipse I receive a "Source not found" error in two cases:
Stepping in to a file in a different project which is already imported
Stepping in to a file in an installed maven repository
The files are there, but eclipse won't step into them, instead it shows a button to "attach source"
I tried attaching (which opened a dialog to define a variable?!) and eclipse did jump to the file, but the debugger could not inspect any variables there. Also manually attaching the source for each dependency isn't practical, as in my case there are thousands of dependency files.
Why is this happening, and how can it be resolved?
Just 3 steps to configuration Eclipse IDE:
Note: After updating the Source Lookup paths, you'll have to stop and restart your debug session. Otherwise, the file with the missing source will continue to show "missing source".
Edit Source Lookup
Select the Edit Source Lookup... command [ Edit Source Lookup ] to open the Source Path Dialog, which allows you to make changes to the source lookup path of the selected debug target.
IMPORTANT Restart Eclipse after this last step.
Eclipse debugging works with the class actually loaded by the program.
The symptoms you describe sounds like the class in question was not found in the project, but in a distribution jar without debug info found before the project you are working with.
This can happen for several reasons but have a look at the location where the classes showing this behaviour is found (look in the navigation pane to identify it). You will most likely need to change the build path of the project to avoid using this jar and have the JVM use the project instead.
EDIT: Note that as of 2018 it is common to use a build framework like Maven, where the build path is managed by the m2e plugin so this problem should be very less frequent than when the question was asked. If you use Maven and m2e, make sure to enable Preferences / Maven / "Download Artifact Sources" or right-click the project, Maven / "Download Sources".
The symptoms perfectly describes the case when the found class doesn't have associated (or assigned) source.
You can associate the sources for JDK classes in Preferences > Java > Installed JRE. If JRE (not JDK) is detected as default JRE to be used, then your JDK classes won't have attached sources. Note that, not all of the JDK classes have provided sources, some of them are distributed in binary form only.
Classes from project's build path, added manually requires that you manually attach the associated source. The source can reside in a zip or jar file, in the workspace or in the filesystem. Eclipse will scan the zip, so your sources doesn't have to be in the root of the archive file, for example.
Classes, from dependencies coming from another plugins (maven, PDE, etc.). In this case, it is up to the plugin how the source will be provided.
PDE will require that each plugin have corresponding XXX.source bundle, which contains the source of the plugin. More information can be found here and here.
m2eclipse can fetch sources and javadocs for Maven dependencies if they are available. This feature should be enabled m2eclipse preferences (the option was named something like "Download source and javadocs".
For other plugins, you'll need to consult their documentation
Classes, which are loaded from your project are automatically matched with the sources from the project.
But what if Eclipse still suggest that you attach source, even if I correctly set my classes and their sources:
This almost always means that Eclipse is finding the class from different place than you expect. Inspect your source lookup path to see where it might get the wrong class. Update the path accordingly to your findings.
Eclipse doesn't find anything at all, when breakpoint is hit:
This happens, when you are source lookup path doesn't contain the class, which is currently loaded in the runtime. Even if the class is in the workspace, it can be invisible to the launch configuration, because Eclipse follows the source lookup path strictly and attaches only the dependencies of the project, which is currently debugged.
An exception is the debugging bundles in PDE. In this case, because the runtime is composed from multiple projects, which doesn't have to declare dependencies on one another, Eclipse will automatically find the class in the workspace, even if it is not available in the source lookup path.
I cannot see the variables when I hit a breakpoint or it just opens the source, but doesn't select the breakpoint line:
This means that in the runtime, either the JVM or the classes themselves doesn't have the necessary debug information. Each time classes are compiled, debug information can be attached. To reduce the storage space of the classes, sometimes this information is omitted, which makes debugging such code a pain. Your only chance is to try and recompile with debug enabled.
Eclipse source viewer shows different lines than those that are actually executed:
It sometimes can show that empty space is executed as well. This means that your sources doesn't match your runtime version of the classes. Even if you think that this is not possible, it is, so make sure you setup the correct sources. Or your runtime match your latest changes, depending on what are you trying to do.

I had similar problem with my eclipse maven project. I fought with this issue quite a long time then I tried to rebuild project with
mvn clean eclipse:eclipse
and it helped.
Note: Using this approach will confuse the m2e plugin since the two approaches are very different. m2e adds a virtual node to your project called "Maven Dependencies" and asks Maven to add all dependencies there.
mvn eclipse:eclipse, on the other hand, will create a lot of individual entries in the file .classpath. Eclipse will handle them as if you manually added JARs to your project.
Unless you know how the classpath in Eclipse works, this approach is not recommended.
I was facing the same issue,I followed the bellow steps.
Window => Preferences => Java => Installed JREs,
You see in the above screen Jre1.8.0_12 is selected.
select the JRE you are using and click Edit. Now You should see the bellow screen.
Click on the directory, browse for Jdk, It should look like bellow screen.

I had the problem that my Eclipse was not debugging the source code of my project. I was getting a blank page with "Source code node found".
Please click the Attach source code button. Then delete the "default" folder then click add and go to your project location and attach. This worked for me
Remove the existing Debug Configuration and create a new one. That should resolve the problem.
None of the mentioned answer worked for me.
To resolve this issue i have to follow bellow steps:
Right click on Java HotSpot(TM) 64 Bit server.
Select "Edit Source Lookup".
Click on "Add".
Select "File System Directory" instead of Java project.
Select Root directory of your project.
Check "Search Subfolders".
Click Ok ok ok.

In my case, even after Editing source lookup and Adding project, it didn't worked. I configured the Build path of the project.
After that, I selected JRE System Library and it worked.
Evidently, Eclipse does not automatically know where the source code for the dependent jars are. It is not clear why debugger could not inspect variables once the source was attached. One possibility is incorrect/incompatible source.
Assuming you have a maven project and the sources of the dependencies are downloaded and available in the local repository, you may want to install m2eclipse, the maven eclipse plugin and see if that helps in addressing your issue.
You might have source code of a dependency accessible to Eclipse. But Eclipse does not know for source code for code that is dynamically loaded. E.g. through Maven.
In case of Maven, I recommend that you use run-jetty-run plugin:

As a workaround you can also connect to a running JVM with the debugger and you will see the code.

In my case in "Attach Source", I added the other maven project directory in the "Source Attachment Configuration" panel. Adding the latest version jar from the m2 repository din't work. All the classes from the other maven project failed to open.
Here test was my other maven project containing all the java sources.
I had the very same problem. In my case, I've disabled Window-Preferences-Java-Debug [Suspend execution on uncaught exceptions]. Then, the console showed me the correct error: my MySql user hadn't privileges to access the database. According to this topic.
Info: This is a possible solution, when you use maven (pom.xml) with couple of projects.
If you are working with maven, make sure what version you are taking inside the according pom.xml (e. g. 1.0.1-SNAPSHOT ).
It might be possible that your code is up-to-date, but your pom.xml dependencies are still taking the old JAR's/Snapshots (with the old code).
Finding the problem:
Try to debug the according file.
Therefore, set a breakpoint in the relevant code area.
When "source not found" appears, make sure to bind in the right project (where the .java file can be found).
The compile .class file opens up in the IDE editor.
Click "Link with Editor" to find the according JAR/Snapshot.
Now make sure that this JAR is the most recent one. Possibly there is a newer one. In that case, write the most recent version number in the pom.xml.
Then do a maven update and build (e. g. "mvn clean install -U") in the right project directory.
If you are on eclipse or STS please install and Use GC(GrepCode Plugin) ,some time you don't need to attach the source .zip file into your project path so GrepCode works fine for you.
I've had a related issue in connection with Glassfish server debugging in Eclipse.
This was brought about by loading the source code from a different repository (changing from SVN to GitHub). In the process, the wrong compiled classes were used by the Glassfish server and hence, the source and run time would be out of sync with break points appearing on empty lines.
To solve this, rename or delete the top folder of the classes directory and Glassfish will recreate the whole class directory tree including updating the class files with the correctly compiled version.
The classes directory is located in: /workspace/glassfish3122eclipsedefaultdomain/eclipseApps/< your Web Application>/WEB-INF/classes
In my case with tomcat projects I have checked project here:
Window - Preferences - Tomcat - Source Path - Add java projects to source path
In my case the Maven version of the other referenced project didn't match the version of the test project. Once they were the same, the problem disappeared.
When running in debug mode, click Edit Source Lookup after suspended from thread. At this point, we should be able to add the necessary project/jar which contains your source code.

I had this problem while working on java code to do process on a excel file containing a data set, then convert it to .csv file, i tried answers to this post, but they did not work.
the problem was the jar files themselves. after downloading needed jar files one by one(older releases) and add them to my project, "source not found" error vanished.
maybe you can check your jar files.

Well, here's what worked for me. I tried every possible solution on StackOverflow that there was. I tried changing my source location in the debug menu, I installed the m2e Eclipse plugin, I changed from embedded Maven, and I installed the run-jetty-run and nothing worked. Now, I will caveat that I was not trying to view an external person's source code, I just wanted to see my OWN code, but every time I "stepped in" to my methods that I wrote that were in MY project, I got the "Source now found" error.
After finally asking an expert, my issue was that the first thing Eclipse was doing was calling a ClassLoader, which you can see from the debug stack. All I had to do was F6 (step over) and then it took me back to my original call and then F5 (step in). And there was my code. Sigh...such a simple fix but an hour wasted.
For beginners,
There is a possibility that the jar file is a part of the project which you have not yet included in the Eclipse workspace.
For that, you need to know the project name of the jar file.
Say for example, its abc-18.0.0-SNAPSHOT.jar, it means that the project you are supposed to include in your workspace is abc.
I had the same issue with eclipse 2019-03 (4.11.0) and I was only able to solve this by doing the debugging via remote debugging instead of directly launching it in debug mode.
Attach source -> Add -> External Archive -> select the jar -> open -> done
the catch is look for the sources jar and attach this jar.
for example the jar ends with "-sources" Stax2-api-3.4.1-sources
sometimes these thing happens because of the version also like if you are using latest
version in that case it may arise try to use older version it will work.

Eclipse using wrong build while debugging

I am new to eclipse and java. The way I understand the directory structure is that you have source packages in src/ folder and they are built into the /build folder.
It was all working fine until recently. But today I tried debugging after creating a new class and it was throwing ClassNotFoundException when I do F11. On investigation, I found that it was using older versions of even the existing classes and not the new builds, and there was no .class file corresponding to my new class. I checked the build/ directory and it seems the builds are also old as it is showing yesterdays last modified time despite the fact that I have made changes today and tried to debug it. This problem is not limited to debugging as I exported the class into a jar file and it is still using yesterday's jar file. What could be the issue here? Is it not 'building' the classes? Have I messed up the default 'build' folder somewhere?
First you should check, that the "build automatically" feature is activated (menu "Project/Build automatically").
Next you should do a refresh of your whole project to tell eclipse to check for file changes that occured outside of the eclipse IDE.
If all that doesn't help, do a "Project/Clean.../clean all projects" inside eclipse.
I'd stop assuming and find out where Eclipse is putting your newer .class files. They can't be disappearing. Once you know that, compare it to the project set up you have and make sure that you know exactly where the .class files are going.
