A third party application I'm using (Knime) hangs when using Java for Mac 1.6.0_29 (Java for OS X Lion Update 1). In the user forums of that app, it is recommended to use version 1.6.0_26.
Sadly, I got a fresh install, so there are no previous Java versions installed in my computer to downgrade to.
I've been looking for a while and still cannot find out how to install a previous version of Java for Mac OS X Lion.
Any ideas?
Too late for the original question, but, for the record, Knime has apparently fixed the error:

This might help:
- Register for a (free) Developer account at Apple: http://developer.apple.com/programs/register/
- Go to Downloads: http://connect.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MemberSite.woa/wa/downloads
- Click Developer Tools on the right-hand side
- Scroll down until you see Java for Mac OS X 10.7 Developer Package - this should include 1.6.0_26.
As an alternative, you can download the 10.6 Java Update 5 from the same page and use these instructions to replace your current installation: http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20100123192950640

I was trying to find a download for jdk 1.6 specifically for OS X. But Oracle doesn't seem to offer one. This made me wonder if the jdk 1.6 meant for Linux would work fine on OS X. I could try running it to see if it works. But I thought I'd check here to see if there are any subtle or not-so-subtle issues that I've missed.
I have an AMD-64 architecture on my mac system.
Java 6 for Mac is provided by Apple rather than Oracle, and can be downloaded from http://support.apple.com/downloads/#Java - look for the latest "Java for OSX", which at the time of writing is 2014-001.
This is a tip in reference to Yosemite ´s users (10.10). Yosemite erase 1.6 apple jdk and install 1.7, but JAVA´s IDE for example Intellij or Eclipse needs 1.6, if you haven´t reinstalled this version, your ide will crash at the beginning... after this process you can configure your ide with 1.7 version.
Here the link : Apple JDK 1.6
It's easy to change Jetbrains' products to use jdk1.7:
Open Application folder
Choose Jetbrains product you use
RightClick and choose 'show package content' <- I dont know how exactly it is in english version of OS
Choose Contents
Double Click Info.plist
Find:
<key>JVMVersion</key>
<string>1.6*</string>
and change to:
<key>JVMVersion</key>
<string>1.7*</string>
Save and quit,
Enjoy!
Please do not edit your Info.plist file as it will break the application digital signature and prevent the patch updates.
I was able to get phpStorm working properly again on my Mac ( Yosemite ) by installing this apple support package: Java for OS X 2014-001Java
This package installs the same version of Java 6 included in Java for OS X 2013-005 which apparently plays nice with JetBrains.
Hope this helps.
Apple 1.6 is still required to run JetBrains IDEs. There should be a window with the suggestion to install Java when you start the product for the first time, but it could be hidden by other application windows.
See https://intellij-support.jetbrains.com/entries/27854363-IDE-doesn-t-start-after-updating-to-Mac-OS-Yosemite-or-Mavericks
Since today, PHPStorm 9 comes with a special Yosemite version including JDK 1.8.
This alternative PhpStorm 9 distribution bundles JDK 1.8 customized by the JetBrains team for better performance. Please note this non-default option may contain some issues.
No more issues with java...
Reinstalling libpng helped me after hours of tries and checking all possible causes:
brew uninstall --force libpng
brew install libpng
Tested on Mac OS X Sierra (10.12.1) with WebStorm 2016.2
Apple pushed out an update to their Mac OS X Java two days ago. In the past, I've been able to go to http://connect.apple.com and download the corresponding Developer Package so that my IDE can once again associate the new version of Java with its source code. (Many thanks to this StackOverflow question.)
But I'm coming up empty this time. There's no "Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 10 Developer Package" listed, and Google has no hits for "1.6.0_35-b10-428.jdk". Is there a new place to find the source, or is this new version of Java source-identical to Update 9, or am I just out of luck until Apple gets around to publishing the new Developer Package?
Looks like Apple took a few extra days to release the Developer Package. It's now at https://developer.apple.com/downloads/index.action .

The latest Java for Mac OS X should be what you're looking for.
If I install SoyLatte on MAC 10.5.8, On command line I can see the version as 1.6.0
However the Safari Browser extension still shows the old java version.
In Java Preference also I am not able to see Java 6 version.
How do I update browsers to run under java 6.
Any help will be appreciable.
SoyLatte is not a full replacement for Java on OS X - just a proof of concept - and the real port of OpenJDK is targetting OS X 10.6 and up.
For OS X 10.5 you are best off with the official Apple offerings which according to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4739?viewlocale=da_DK includes Java 6.
OSX 10.5 originally only included Java 1.4 and 5 OSX Java 1.5 release notes to get later versions you need to install the updates the latest provide 1.6.0_26 and 1.5.0_30,albeit 1.6 is for Intel 64 bit machines only.
I am using preinstalled jdk for development on mac which is 1.6.0_17. With this version or copy if installed jdk i cannot run java applets in firefox or any other web browser on mac. if i update my mac with latest java which is Java for mac OS X 10.6 update 6 then i can solve java applet. But with latest java update i cannot connect to MSSQL Server which is bug in java 1.6.0_29. I would be happy to install older version of java for mac OS X but those are not available, may be i am unable to find them through google ?
My query is, how can i solve both problems ? can i install two java versions on mac and use them parallely, lets say one for eclipse and other for browser. OR is there any other way to cope both problems.
I am using current snow leopard, myEclipse, Java 1.6.0_17 and mssql server 2008.
The bug that causes the JDBC driver to fail is fixed in java 1.6.0_30 - see http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/6u30-relnotes-1394870.html
If you can't wait for update 30 for the Mac to arrive, the bug description suggests that you may be able to avoid it by reconfiguring your the JDBC connection to use a non-SSL/TLS channel. (I've no idea how you'd do that, but it is worth investigating if you are desperate for a workaround.)
Alternatively talk to Apple or Oracle's Java support.
I have not solved it 100% but some how solution or workaround works. Which is working with two javas
