Using OO Observer pattern without updating object from which change originated - java

I'm building an application which contains a GUI and a Model. I'm using the Observer pattern (using java's built in interfaces) to update the GUI when fields in the model are changed.
This is generally working fine, but I have a situation in which a particular String variable in the model (specifically the url of a file) can be changed by two separate JTextFields (swing) the contents of which actually reflects the value of the model variable in question.
The issue I am having comes from the fact that an change in one of these JTextFields needs to cause an update to the state of the model, and the contents of the other JTextField. My Model ensures that notifications are sent to observers only in the case that the state of the model has changed. However, the process by which JTextFields are modified involves blanking it's text content then reseting it.
Without going into too much detail, the upshot of this is that the update / notification process gets stuck in an infinte loop. I have temporarily hacked around this by setting aside the observer pattern for this particular problem, but I was wondering if anyone could suggest a neat way of ensuring that a particular component is not "updated" by a change which originated from the same component.

As discussed in Java SE Application Design With MVC, this is one of several Issues With Application Design. The suggested approach relies on a PropertyChangeListener, illustrated here. The PropertyChangeEvent includes both old & new values for reference.

This link which talks about a Bidirectional Observer may offer some help on this.
It does seem in your case that the Model and View are trying to update each other. The solution would lie in enforcing the direction of an update. For example Inner layer -> Model -> View and View -> Model -> Inner layer. So it wouldn't really be a true Observer Pattern.
The update(Observable o, Object arg) method of java.util.Observer does accept an Observable(Subject) object. This object can be used to provide a hint to the Model asking it to propagate the update inward rather than toward the View.
I gave it a quick try and found that setting up Bidirectional observer (using Java apis) is not as simple as I thought. But you could venture a try.

Why is EventSourcingHandler (in aggregate object) needed?

Fair warning: I have no idea what I'm doing, so even the asking of this question may go awry.
I'm wanting to update state on a simple object (the Aggregate) and then provide the UI with a projection of the changed object. Here's my aggregate object (command handler exists, but not shown here).

The QueryHandler does what you would expect, finding the instance and returning it.
So here are my questions:
Why do I need the EventSourcingHandler in the Aggregate? That is, it
appears to do work, but the result isn't stored or sent anywhere.
So, that becomes my next question: After executing the EventSourcing
Handler, is the resulting instance of Widget (not the projection)
stored, seen, or sent anywhere?
If EventSourcingHandler is indeed needed, is there any way to avoid
having two independent copies of my business logic (one in
EventSourcingHandler, and one EventHandler)? I really hate the idea
of having to update the same business logic in two places.

The short answer would be:
The necessity of using the #EventSourcingHandler really depends on how you want to model your application.
Now, that doesn't say much, so let me elaborate a little why I am stating this.
In answering your questions I am assuming that your desire is to create an application where you follow the ideas of DDD, CQRS and Event Sourcing. Thus, the concepts which Axon tries to simplify for you whilst building your application.
Let me go over your numbered questions from here:
The reason you'd need #EventSourcingHandler annotated functions in your Aggregate, is to (1) update the Aggregate state based on the (2) events it has published. To go to point 1, why would you update the state of your Aggregate? As your Aggregate is the Command Model of your application, it is tasked with making the decisions based on the commands it receives. To be able to make decisions, sometimes an Aggregate needs state, but sometimes it does not. So in the Widget example you've shared, I'd assume that the color field is no used at all to drive business logic later on, hence you could perfectly omit this state from the Aggregate without any problems. With the second point of my response I try to point out that an Aggregate will only ever handle the events which originate from itself. This is as the events are the source of your Aggregate, as the events constitute all the delta's which have occurred on that given model.
Your following questions fits nicely with proceeding the explanation I've started in point 1. The answer is quite simple, your Widget Aggregate is not stored anywhere, not as is. Every time you'd retrieve your Aggregate from the Repository (this is done automatically for you in Axon), which defaults to an EventSourcingRepository in Axon, all the Events for that given Aggregate will be retrieved from the Event Store. Than, an empty Aggregate instance is created and the framework will replay all the events it has found for that exact Aggregate instance. You're thus effectively Event Sourcing your Aggregate every time a new command comes in. This might sound a little overkill, as the number of events for a given Aggregate might grow to quite a large set. This can be solved by doing things like making snapshots of the Aggregate.
If this form of splitting your application in a dedicated part which deals with your business logic, the Command Model, and the part which simply returns a Query Model as an answer, the Query Model, then you could decide to have a State Stored Aggregate. So note, your are not required, at all, to do Event Sourcing when using Axon; it's just the default modus operandi for the framework. Thus I understand the felt concern from your part, that you're duplicating your logic. You can however strictly separate the part which makes all the decisions to be held in your Aggregate.
The Query Model (in your example the ProjectedWidget) can be stored in what ever format and in what ever database/tool you'd like, ideally without any business logic.
If you do find yourself adding business logic in the Query side of your application, this might suggest you should upgrade this bit as an event originating from your Aggregate's.
I hope this brings you some insights into why you'd go for Event Sourcing to begin with. This article describes CQRS in a little more detail than I could do here, and this link for Event Sourcing; hope they might serve as a more thorough explanation than I just gave you.

MVC architecture implementation

Originally I had the view holding commands for buttons, these buttons calculated this and output text onto JTextAreas after being pushed. What is produced is dependent on the value returned.
I am concerned I am not following standard MVC architecture by setting text like below inside my controller.
At the moment I changed my button commands into my controller as so

In MVC, you should not update the view from the controller. The controller is meant for event handling and altering the model according to these events. The model should then update its observers, ie. the view.

In MVC, the model is a layer.
The model layer comprises of multiple objects: domain objects, services and mappers. You can read more in this post (although in PHP, the concepts still hold substance).
That being said, your controller handles the input from the user, sends this to the relevant object within the model layer, which then returns this data to the controller - and then your controller sends this to the view instance which handles the logic for displaying this to the user.
The observer pattern is really interesting and Koen's link above is a good one. I saved this snippet a while back from somewhere on SO:
Have state-setting operations on Subject call Notify after they change the

decorator pattern to allow different behavior of a model

I was wondering whether the use of a decorator pattern is good in case I want my model ("M part" of MVC) to raise Exceptions depending on their origin. I explain myself.
I have a class called Game which is a part of the Model. I have two Views : a GUI and a command line. I want my model to raise an Exception for command line view when the user enters a character instead of a number (for example). Of course I don't want this Exception to be handled by the model as it "belongs" to the command line and not to the Model itself.
To encapsulate those two different behaviors, I plan to decorate the Game class with two classes : CommandLineGame and GUIGame which have only one attribute : Game and handle their own kind of Exception. Is it a good idea ? Is there a better one ? The problem of such a solution is that every model class raising Exception depending on its origin has to be decorated...
What you are describing in the example is "input validation". Strictly speaking*, this belongs in the Controller ("C Part") of MVC.
The separation of concerns for MVC decomposes as follows:
View is there to 1) present a UI for the user to evaluate the state of the program (Also, what your program looks like visually) and 2) to receive the user's expression of intent (receive raw instructions on what they may want to do)
Controller is the actual interpreter of these "actions" or "intentions" from the user. It decides what it means for a user to click a particular button and what to call in your model. It decides whether a particular input actually makes sense given context from the UI (and in some case from the model).
Model should be View/Controller agnostic (Meaning the model should have no knowledge of the View/Controller). It should only be about the internal representation of what you are trying to "model". The advantage of doing it this way: you can have many different UIs, or change your existing UIs without affecting the model.
Overall, the idea is to lower coupling and increase cohesion.

Depending on the language / framework, the lines between MVC components get blurred a bit. Some idioms will lump most of Controller into the View, but the encapsulation of logic should stay relatively similar.
*In practice, for defensive programming, input validation is done twice for mutual suspicion: they are broken down into client-side mediation and server-side mediation:
In this case, the Model part should handle the "server-side" mediation: it should check that the arguments passed to its functions actually make sense before proceeding.
Similarly, the Controller/View part should check the input as part of "client-side" mediation, so that it can warn the user right away, without passing it back to the model, and then eventually back to the view.
It will keep your code very clean, something i like a lot from an academic perspective.
On the other hand do you need to introduce this kind of design complexity for a simple problem like this?
So, if you need the code to be clean... GO for it.

How to Use Java Observer's update(Observable, Object) Function?

I have a basic MVC pattern created in Java that uses the Observable/Observer class/interface.

View triggers an event to the Controller, when the user interacts with the GUI.
- E.g presses a button, fills in a field, etc.
Model triggers an event to the View when it updates its state.
- E.g when the a button was pressed and the Controller requests new results.
My question is about the Observer function
update(Observable obs, Object arg);
This is one function, but I have many different kinds of updating to do in my View for example. How do I elegantly distinguish between an update to, say, my search results or the displaying of additional information? These are two completely different updates that use different objects from the Model.
My first idea was to use the Object to pass a string which would describe what update is required.
"UpdateResults" "DisplayAdditionalInformation" "AddQuestions"
but that seems error-prone and ugly. My second instinct was to create an EventObject that would be passed as an Object, but then I have to keep asking what kind of EventObject I'm using:

You can create your own Listener interfaces depending on what view/model you are listening to. This allows your view/model to pass exactly the information required to your controller and will make it easier to unit test the controller.
For listening to the model, updating everything is the simplest solution and you can do that unless performance proves to be an issue.

How can I avoid passing around a single instance of a top level component to all my subclasses

So I've been trying to see how I could best structure my code, because I have an intuitive feel that there must be a better way to achieve what I want without passing around a single object to nearly every UI class in the project.
The project I'm working on has a class RhythmWheel that extends JRootPane. The constructor then goes on to create all the components that form a RhythmWheel. For example it creates an instance of ControlPanel (which extends JPanel) and adds it to itself.
However ControlsPanel needs to have a lot of knowelgde of things that are defined in RhythmWheels like the number of wheels that are currently selected. Currently the constructor for ControlsPanel takes a RhythmWheel as an argument, and then keeps a reference to it. It uses this for things ranging for component a JFileChooser should be parented to to, and as an argument to a function that writes the revelant state of the application to an XML file.
It seems wrong to me that I'm passing around a main component across so many classes. I thought about design patterns, and figured that a singleton might be a solution to this. However I have read numerous times that singletons are evil and are an anti-pattern. I guess the MVC pattern might help, but I'm not sure how I'd implement that in Swing. And most recently I came across Dependency Injection as a possible solution.
I'm a little lost as to what I should be doing, or if I should be doing aything at all. If you'd like to glance at the code I'm working on, you can see it at https://github.com/vamega/RhythmWheels so any advice on how to proceed would be great.
if everything needs a reference to RhythmWheel then it sounds like RhythmWheel is awfully complex. maybe you can break RhythmWheel into a collection of components that (hopefully, and likely, since GUI should reflect logical structure) correspond to particular parts of the GUI?
also, why do all the GUI components keep references to the RhythmWheel (or the appropriate sub-component, if you refactor as described above)? i haven't done much spring programming, but i thought the idea was to structure things round an observer pattern. in that case, the gui components should be registering themselves as observers on the wheel components, so that they can update when the wheel changes.
and yes, this is mvc. the wheel components form your model; the gui is your view. what is less clear is what the controller is. i suspect that it is the high-level wheel.
so, in summary:
the wheel is composed of sub-components
the wheel has high-level methods that reflect what you can "do" to it
the wheel's high-level methods are what are called by actions in the view
the wheel's high-level methods make changes to the wheel's sub-components
the wheel's sub-components, when they change, inform the model, which updates
only the input parts of the view need references to the wheel; the display parts are triggered via callbacks registered with the wheel sub-components.
(to answer the original question directly, i don't see anything so bad in passing around a wheel instance, but as i suggest above, it might be better for it to "fragment" into different components as it gets "lower" into the GUI).
I don't see what's wrong with using singletons. A control panel sounds like a prime candidate for a singleton. Why would have you more than one? Same goes for the others. Anything your currently accessing in ControlPanel from RhythmWheel can be exposed through getters and setters.
Unless there's a model/view separation that you would like to decouple or a view that needs to observe model updates, I wouldn't use MVC.
