I'm quite new to Swing, and I'm programming an application with NetBeans' UI designer.
Now I have an JPanel called "editorPanel", and it must be able to display multiple things. (so, sometimes it has to display an image, and sometimes it has to display a text editor)
I have made separate panels for this, so say I'd have a JPanel called ImagePanel and one called TextPanel. It has to switch easily between them, so I tried this:
editorPanel = new ImagePanel();
But that didn't work.
So, what I want to do, is set an empty panel to a defined panel.
How can I make this work?
The proper way to achieve your goal is to using a card layout and switching panels accordingly.

Im using NetBeans to do a work for school. There i have an huge JPanel that contains a huge JFrame. That JFrame as 5 small JFrames, 1 is the menu with buttons, the other ones are boxes with text that will swap when i choose in the buttons.
When one box is showing the other ones are invisible im using the following code (dont know if it is the best):

After some time searching i just realized i could Set Layout from JPanel to Card Layout and create JPanels over each other activating them with the code:

Looks like you are using Java Swing , right ?
Any way you do something wrong if you have JPanel that contains JFrames. To build correct UI you have to add JPanels inside JFrame.
Also, to reach correct component order and placing you need configure corresponded layout, here is description.
You can load one jframe at e time
Because every jframe you added have own place and visibility doesnt do anything to remove
Try to save every jframe and for changing
Delete old one and add new one
Why are you using multiple JFrames to do this? From what I can see it would be a better idea to use JPanels that can take care of the individual tasks, such as the menu and buttons etc.
I'm relatively new to using javax.swing myself, but from my knowledge you can only have 1 frame at a time per window (like the other person said).
From what i've been able to discern from your project, you possibly don't even need multiple panels. You just need one panel for the menu with buttons, and multiple Labels or JLabels that display text according to the button. You can use the setText method in writing your addActionListener, something like this:

I currently have build an application where I use multiple frames.
But it would be nice if I could use the frames I used all in just 1 frame.

So if you press the left button "Speler Overzicht" that it will show the users in the right panel and I still have my buttons in the left panel.
Generally speaking, it's a very bad idea to base you UI classes on JFrame, as it locks you into a single use case, meaning you can't add the UI component (frame) to other containers.
I better solution is to base your UI components on JPanels, which then allows you to add them to where ever you need them. It also makes life easier to extend them, but that's another story.
To allow the user to move between multiple views, you can use either a CardLayout or JTabbedPane depending on your needs

You cannot put one JFrame inside another. You have a some design choices here. You can change your JFrames to JPanels. This is probably the easiest change. On the other hand, you can look at using Internal Frames instead.
I want to design a jFrame where there are three jButtons and a set of three jpanels one above the other. When we call a jPanel from the respective jButton , that pane will be displayed. It would appear to the user as if the same portion of the jFrame is displaying the content to be shown on clicking each jButton.But when i am trying to set the jPanels one above the other, they are being shown side by side thus elongating the jFrame horizontally. What should i do to put one jPanel over the other? Any other idea than jPanel which should do the work i intend to do would also be help !!
Your behavior sounds like you are using a FlowLayout. This will not "layer" anything. Instead us a CardLayout, which does exactly what you are trying to accomplish. You call method like show, next, and previous to navigate the panels. See How to Use CardLayout for more details.

Here's one that uses the show() method to switch between two panels by name.
I am using NetBeans 7.2. I have a JFrame with Card Layout having one Main Panel and Several Sub Panels. As you can guess all auto generated Swing component definitions are declared in single file, and its all messed up.
How can I separate these panels say in a package, to make it more modular? Or am I taking completely wrong approach ?
You can create JPanel forms with the builder tool. New -> Swing Forms -> JPanel Form. Then to see them in the design view, just drag and drop them onto the card layout panel as seen here
slightly wrong approach.. if you want to make the panels something like modular, just create a new panel class inside the package, not many panels on the same class.. create new panel class and pass it to ur main panel..
I have an open-source java swing application like this:

You can see in the screenshot, there is a JPanel divided into two area, left and right area. The left area has many text links. When I click the SLA Criteria link, it will pop-up the SLA Criteria window. The pop-up window is JFrame object.
Now, I'm trying to put the pop-up window into right area of the JPanel, so that means no pop-up window anymore, i.e. when I click the SLA Criteria link, its contents will be displayed at the right area of the JPanel. The existing content of the right area of JPanel will not be used anymore. The concept is just same like in the java api documentation page: http://docs.oracle.com/javase/6/docs/api. You click the link in the left frame, you'll get the content displayed at the right frame.

Instead of trying to embed the frame, you want to embed the frame's content.
There is (at least) one issue I can see with this.
The menu bar is controlled by the frame's RootPane.
Create you're self a new JPanel. Set it's layout to BorderLayout.
Get the menu bar from the frame (using JFrame#getJMenuBar) and added to the north position of you new panel.
Get the frames ContentPane and add it to the center position of the panel.
There is undoubtedly countless other, application specific issues you will run into trying to do this...
No, you don't want to "put a JFrame into a JPanel" and your illustration above doesn't demonstrate this either. Instead it's showing a subordinate window on top of (not inside of) another window. If you absolutely need to display a new subordinate window, I'd recommend that you create and display a JDialog. The tutorials will explain how to do this, or if you get stuck post your code attempt and we'll help you work with this.

The content is displayed at right frame directly. So that's basicly my goal. The source code is quite big. I will try to paste the source code if possible.
What you are looking for is to simply implement a MouseListener in a JList or JTable, and when responding to the click get the content based on the selection made. This has nothing to do with placing a JFrame in a JPanel and all to do with writing the correct program logic. Again, display it in a modal JDialog -- but that's all secondary to your writing the correct non-GUI logic. You're really barking up the wrong tree here. Forget about JFrames, forget about JPanels for the moment and instead concentrate on how you're going to extract the SLA Criteria data when it is clicked on.

I think I see what you're trying to do -- instead of JFrames and JDialogs, use JPanels and swap them using a CardLayout which would allow you to swap views.
I had skimming the source codes, I saw that the AWindow.java has internal panel (APanel.java) to hold the window's content, and it also has a public method to return the content panel object (getAPanel()). With this, I can use it for fetching the window's contents into other container.
Finally, I decided to use JTabbedPane in the right area of VTreePanel for displaying the pop-up window's contents.
You cannot put a Jframe into a JPanel. Instead you should try to create a separate panel that has functionalities like your JFrame and embed that into your JPanel.
Since you can put a JPanel into another JPanel but not a JFrame into another JPanel
