Eclipse giving error, missing R.java file after recent update

Closed 9 years ago.
I update my android tools and also my ADT. I cleaned my project and build it again. However after this action my /gen folder is empty.
I have made sure that none of my resource contains errors and also made sure that there is no import.R in my activity. I tried cleaning and rebuilding other projects as well with same error. I created a new android project and even the new project had and empty /gen folder.
Solved:
After the update you need to restart the SDK manager and download android build tools. After i clean my projects everything is fine again. Thank you guys.

Yesterday I had the same problem.
That's what I did:
Upgrade Android Development Tools to v.22
How?
Tab Help -> Install new SW using this site: https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/eclipse

Are you referencing the correct android SDK location, and do you have the necessary platforms/api level that you are referencing in your project?

Did you try moving project folders to a different location, e.g. to your documents or another drive?
The errors with the build path can be fixed by clicking Android Tools->Fix Project Properties
EDIT :
1) Make sure you don't have any other errors other than the R-related errors. Right-click your project folder in Eclipse, Android Tools -> Fix Project Properties.
do this
2) Check to make sure you have the correct R imported. Sometimes the default Android.R can be imported.
3) Check for errors in your layout XML files.

check in your sdk manager whether the android platform tools is installed , check whether the api you are targetting is installed and also in eclipse File-properties-builders check if everthing is selected. if all this is fine then if you have not restated your system after update then restart it.

Build path incomplete only in some workspaces (Android)

Closed 8 years ago.
My adt work one time very well and i am able to run all the projects and then open in next day it wants some updates for sdk otherwise show error of DDMS missing i updated the sdk and now
Error: Resource Path Location Type The project was not built since its build path is incomplete. Cannot find the class file for java.lang.Object. Fix the build path then try building this project
Do any one tell me how to solve all these errors and work on ADT smoothly or there any other option.
The problem here is your IDE couln't recognise your SDK location, if you are using MyEclipse the do following
Go to Windows -> preference -> Android and set your sdk path again.
In Studio File -> setting and then set your sdk path.
Then restart eclipse/studio.
Seems you are missing Java itself within the IDE which include java.lang.Object. I'd check to see if the project you are working with has Java on the build path.

Android - Eclipse project making and R file error

I'm having issue with Eclipse and I work in android. This issue happens when I create a new project and when I click finish, It auto generates the project without R file and The project creating window doesn't closes and I have to close it. I have many old projects which work fine(Until now) and the issue is only coming when I make a new project. I also get a error in Styles.xml file saying that "Error retrieving parent for item: No resource found that matches the given name 'Theme.AppCompat.Light'". When I press CTRL+RightClick onto R file then it takes me to a window which says "Source Not Found". If you have any solution for this, Please post your answer under this question. Thank you!
EDIT: Appcompat error was solved later.
To solve missing R in generated java files, make sure that Android SDK Tools and Android SDK Build-tools are installed and updated in SDK Manager. Then, make sure Eclipse is updated. After this, clean your project and rebuild.
To solve No resource found "...AppCompat...", make sure Android Support Library is installed and updated in SDK Manager. Then, the AppCompat library can be found at:
android-sdk/extras/android/support/v7/appcompat
You need to reference this AppCompat library in your Android project.
Import the library into Eclipse. To do so:
Right click on your Android project. Select properties. Click 'add...' at the bottom to add a library. Select the support library. Finally, Clean and rebuild your project.

Android:Error an Exclamation mark in my project how to resolve it

i got a pop up when i started my android eclipse stating that there is a new version which has to be upgraded for 22.6.2 version but your sdk is in 22.3 version even i had error that sdk is not installed in your eclipse so i went to help-> install software added repository then restarted my eclipse.
after that i added my code as usual to start coding my project but i got an exclamatory mark near my project when i compile dialog box appears as you have error in your project
Exclamatory mark shown in image
Next i went to show view -> problems . to check the problems i got an error stating about Android dependencies
next i went to quick fix the project but dialog box appeared
after fixing i got an error in jar file itself as shown below
in this we can check the errors
i am not able to resolve the error in the jar file can anyone help to resolve it
thanks for your time and help in advance
You need to reference AppCompat.
Download the support library under extras from Android sdk Manager.
AppCompat is located # android sdk/extras/android/support/v7/appcompat/
Import the library project into workspace.
Select File > Import.
Select Existing Android Code Into Workspace and click Next. Browse ( android sdk/extras/android/support/v7/appcompat/) and click finish
Right click on your project. Goto properties. Android. Add. Browse and Reference AppCOmpat.
Done.
Snaps
Library project imported to eclipse
Referenced AppCompat
You can try thus. Such as
You have updated the android sdk but not updated the adt to match with it.
You can update the adt from here
You might need to update the software source for your adt update
Go to eclipse > help > Check for updates.
It should list the latest update of adt. If it is not working try this
go to eclipse > help > Install new software
Click on add
add this url : update adt dynamically
give it any name.
It will list the updates available- which should ideally be adt 20.xx
Eclipse will restart and hopefully everything should work fine for you.

Newly Created Android Application Project missing R.java file [duplicate]

Another R.Java file missing [duplicate]
(5 answers)
Closed 9 years ago.
I opened an android application project called Test Canvas and later cleaned it by
Project > Clean ...
'Bulid Automatically' option was ticked.
Then the R.java file was deleted and it did not regenerated.I tried all the other options mentioned in the questions of stackexchange. But the R.java file remained missing.
One answer said that R.java generation fails because of errors in .xml files. But there were no errors.I'm 100% sure.
Then i created a new android application project which cannot have any issues in xml files.
When i created the new project it didn't came with the R.java file. I tried cleaning and building with different combinations. It still doesn't work.
I am using eclipse Helios
Android API 15
Android SDK Manager Revision 22
JDK 7U25
Can any one help me on this please?
I understand you have tried cleaning the project. What I would like you to do is Build the project and check the console for any errors.
The R.java also doesn't gets generated if the your project contains errors and these errors are clearly mentioned in your console.
Have a look and see if you can resolve your problem.
Try the following
Close and Reopen the project
Ensure your project folder has 777 rights
Use a later version of Android, that triggers a clean build
Check Problems tab, sometimes errors are not shown on the project files/folder, but a error shows up in this tab
Check top to see the amount of memory you have left, sometimes OOM screws things up
Please use a more later version 1.5 is like decades old
Try this.
Open the properties of your Project
Go to the Android Build target of your Application
Just change the from the currently checked one to another version(can be anything, but one that is supported to at least the minSDK declared in the Manifest)
Do a clean build, if your Project has no issues like in your resources like hyphens in draw able names, unrecognized strings, missing dimension values etc ... your Project should generate the R package with the R class

Developing for Android in Eclipse: R.java not regenerating
(64 answers)
Closed 9 years ago.
Did a fresh install of Eclipse, JDK and android-sdk.
I am currently receiving this error when creating a new project
[2010-09-26 16:07:56 - Test] ERROR: Unable to open class file C:\workspace\Test\gen\com\example\test\R.java: No such file or directory
What's the reason for this and how do I fix it?
Eclipse Helios 32 bit
java version "1.6.0_21"
Android sdk API 8
P.S. I'm new to Android development.
EDIT: I tried most of your solutions, but nothing worked. So I started using my friend's install of Eclipse Ganymede.
I have had same issue, all what I needed to do, was create project and restart eclipse.
//Edit: Complete collapsing of "Package" tree works as well.
This is a mighty annoying error.
It happens 100% of the time when I create a new android project.
What seems to work for me is to just delete the file (which DOES exist and is accessible by my user), then hit build, and it will regenerate it and stop moaning.
It's clearly a bug as there are too many people getting it simply by filling in the boxes in the new project dialog (like me) without even modifying any code!
Have a look at your console. It is an aapt aborted error. Since aapt is the tool that auto-generates R.java, therefore, R.java was not getting generated.
Since R.java is a auto-generated file that stores information about your drawables you should rebuild your project. Before that have a look at your layout xml files and check them for errors.
Notice that Project -> Build All should be selected. Also try to run your project.
Removing Read Only attribute on Eclipse workspace directory and Project->Clean->Build Project
did the trick for me. I then clicked on the project directory from within Eclipse and did a F5 (Refresh) . R.java was generated in the gen folder.
I had a similar error on the creation of new projects myself. After messing around I tried moving the R.Java file into the same location as my projects java file (the src file). Eclipse then saw I removed the R.Java file from its location and created another and that seemed to clean up the error.....I dont know if it was because eclipse rebuilt the file and then saw it or what but that seemed to work for now.
After creating the Project, Right click the Project Folder within the Project Explorer on the Left Tab of Eclipse.
Click on Source->Format.
The Console will say:
[2010-11-24 11:57:42 - YourProject] R.java was modified manually! Reverting to generated version!
Then you're good to go. Try running your Project and it will compile.
Check your imports. If this has sneaked in, then delete it.
import android.R;
Had a almost identical issue with Eclipse Helios 64 bit on Linux, but I had the "1.6.0" API selected like you. The bizarre thing was I could type;
cat <the path it was moaning about>
in a console it would display correctly.
I created a new AVD which used Android 2.1, the issue magically vanished. Perhaps it's a bug in Android SDK or Eclipse?
Right click on your project name in package explorer. Then click 'Validate'. It will be fine.
Here is how to fix it:
Go to your "workspace" folder and make sure it's not "read-only"
Eclipse Menu > Projects > clean
Had the same issue.I was able to solve it by doing the following:
go to Window/Preferences/Java/Build Path
select 'Folders' and change the output folder to 'gen' (this is where Android looks for the generated java files, but the default in eclipse is 'bin').
restart Eclipse
Windows 7,Eclipse 3.5.2
Configure buildpath.. check android , it worked, of course i followed one of the posts mentioned above window, preferences, java, java build path and selected project,
then created a project, and tried to build same error, then i checked build path and saw android is unchecked, checked it and build again, it works!
I had this exact same problem with no helpful errors. finally, I tried deleting my debug keystore and it worked:
rm ~/.android/debug.keystore
I had seen people mention that, but I figured it wasn't my problem because I wasn't getting any errors relating to the debug keystore. I found the answer here:
"Debug certificate expired" error in Eclipse Android plugins
apparently the debug keystore is only valid for one year.
I would say that once you have created your project and you've mention the R.class error --> just restart the Eclipse IDE and everything will be fine ;)
1.-Open Eclipse
2.-Open Window/Preference
3.-Expand JAVA option
4.-Select Build Path
5.-Check the option "Projec"t and uncheck "folder" options
6.-Click on OK
7.-Restart eclipse IDE
Let's go to code !!
This problem can be solved by merely cleaning and rebuilding the project. How ever there is a link to the latest version of Eclipse for Android.

In mac,
I select Project>Clean
after that, i unchecked Build Automatically
then i run the project and it works :)
Windows 7 64bit, run eclipse as administrator, solved the problem for me.
In my case there was no gen folder after pressing clear...
To solve it, i created a new gen file, then when to Build Path => Configure Path, and pressed ok.
All went smooth after that :-)
Following steps are done as solutions:
1. Collapse the project tree structure
2. Go to the workspace and remove the readonly permission of the workspace.
3. right click "default.properties" and go to properties and uncheck the readonly permission in eclipse.( this is done when the workspace shows build error even though there are no compilation issues)
