Trying to create a translucent paint view over my application.
So far, I have a few objects at play.
paintView //a wrapper class of a JPane.
gScrollPane // the area I'm trying to cover
layeredPane // the layered pane
Here's my code so far

For some reason, it's just not working. getComponent returns a jPane. So that shouldn't be the issue. I've made the panel red and opaque for testing but no luck. Have I missed something in the documentation?
Edit:
So I'm not seeing the paintview on top of the gScrollPane
and getComponent just returns the internally wrapped pane. That's not really the issue though.
I think it has to do with the layout of the layered pane. (Flow at the moment)
Setting to box has the layers horizontally side by side (paintview left, gscrollpane right)
It's difficult to know exactly why you're having problems. It could be a paint issue, it could be a layout issue...
Don't forget, JLayeredPane has not layout manager by default. You could use one, but I simply overrode the doLayout method and "implemented" my own for the purpose of the example...

I used JFrame to import and display an image, and used mousemotionlistener to detect the mouse clicks, and I want to be able to draw on top of the image. I want to be able to, if the user makes a click, make that pixel a certain color while preserving the rest of the image, however, I couldn't find out how to use Graphics to do so without deleting the rest of the image or opening a new window.

I am having trouble drawing on a translucent frame. When the "alphaValue" is 255 everything works as expected. But I need a translucent frame. I created a small test class below that demonstrates the problem. As you can see the "MIDDLE" rectangle appears all the time. But the "DRAW" rectangle only appears when "alphaValue" is 255. When it is <=254 you can see via print lines that the method is still called, but the image does not appear to refresh. Thank you in advance for any help.

AWT components don't have a concept of transparency in of themselves, they are always opaque.
You have use a JPanel, which you use setOpaque to control the opacity (on or off) with. This will allow the panel to become see through and you should then be able to see the alpha affect applied directly to the frame...

If I'm working with a JPanel, what's the difference between the Graphics object returned by getGraphics, and the Graphics object that is passed in paintComponent method?
getGraphics
Can be null
Is a "snap shot" of the last paint process
Anything painted to it will be lost on the next paint cycle
You should avoid using getGraphics and simply use what is past to the paintComponent method.
In theory, there is no difference between them, but if you want what you have painted to survive between repaints, then you should be using paintComponent

Basically, this has a JPanel that acts as the primary "canvas" that draws an image and, when set, a Rectangle which acts as the selection.
It uses a second class as the MouseListener to actually make the decisions about what to paint

Is there any way to create a dynamic Zoom Box in Java which will include e. g. 20x20pix area around the cursor (but even when cursor will move beyond the Frame of app) and which will be shown for example in a small JPanel?
I'm asking in context of a Color Chooser program. The last functionality need to be implemented is just that Zoom Box.
I'm sure there are a number of different ways that this could be achieved.
This basically uses a separate component, which acts as the "zoom box". You supply it a component that you want to "zoom" on. It adds a mouse listener so it can monitor mouse motion events and enter and exit events.
These are used to determine when the "popup" window should be shown, where the popup window should be shown and the area that should be "painted".
This uses the "component to be zoomed" paint method to paint a region to of it to a backing buffer, which is then scaled and painted to the "zoom box"...simple
I've not played around with the zoom factor, so there may still be some quirks, but you should get the basic idea...
While I've presented a image to act as the background, this should work on any component

Updated with "screen" version
This version will allow you to display a "zoom window" any where on the screen.
This has a minor issue in the fact that you need to hide the zoom window before you capture the screen, then re-show it.
I might be tempted to change the process so that when the updateBuffer method detected that the mouse position hadn't changed, it updated the buffer and showed the zoom window. When the mouse position changes, it would hide the window again...but that's me ;)

The main problems with the second example is the fact that you need to hide the popup in order to grab a screen shoot. This is done to prevent the popup from begin captured as well. This makes the popup "flash" every time the mouse is moved.
You "could" get around this ensuring the popup is positioned out side the range of the capture, but as you increase the capture area, the popup will move further away from the cursor.
This would, of course, be a great solution for fixed position display (ie, you had a panel fixed on a JFrame instead of a floating box)
This is an additional update that uses a second timer to display the zoom box after the user has stopped moving the mouse.
