Java input mismatch error using scanner - java

I am a novice Java student and am trying to complete a program that uses the scanner to input 5 students' names, and then a loop within to get 3 grades for each student. I am stuck as I keep getting an Input Mismatch error and I don't know why. I have tried to correctly match what kinds of input are coming in to the variables. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
This is what I have:
import java.util.Scanner;
public class StudentGrades {
public static void main(String[] args) {
Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in);
// Declare arrays, grades to hold [student #][course] and correspond to the grade. studentNames to be paralell and hold the names.
int [][] grades;
grades = new int[5][3];
String[] studentNames = new String[5];
int studentNumber = 0;
int courseNumber = 0;
// Create loops to put values in both arrays, using student# as a counter
if (studentNumber < 5) {
System.out.println("Enter the student name");
studentNames[studentNumber] = input.next();
// Nested loop to enter the grades
if (courseNumber < 5) {
System.out.println(" Enter a grade for " + studentNames[studentNumber]+" for course #" + courseNumber);
grades[studentNumber][courseNumber] = input.nextInt();
courseNumber = courseNumber + 1;
}
studentNumber = studentNumber + 1;
}
}
}
And this is what I get:
Exception at thread "main" java.util.InputMismatchException
at java.util.Scanner.throwfor{Scanner.java:909}
at java.util.Scanner.next{Scanner.java:1530}
at java.util.Scanner.nextInt{Scanner.java:2160}
at java.util.Scanner.nextInt{Scanner.java:2119}
at StudentGrades.main{StudentGrades.java:20}

Your problem is in line 20.
grades[studentNumber][courseNumber] = input.nextInt();
that means that in the input, it is expecting an int, but it founds another thing, like a double, a char array or anything else
There is also another problem, you declare your grades as:
grades = new int[5][3];
the last number means that you can access to grades from [0..4][0..2]
but your if statement:
if (courseNumber < 5)
means that you will access to a number higher than '2' in
grades[studentNumber][courseNumber] = input.nextInt();
which will raise an OutOfBoundsException

From the docs:
Thrown by a Scanner to indicate that the token retrieved does not match the pattern for the expected type, or that the token is out of range for the expected type.
From your stack trace:
Exception at thread "main" java.util.InputMismatchException
at java.util.Scanner.throwfor{Scanner.java:909}
at java.util.Scanner.next{Scanner.java:1530}
at java.util.Scanner.nextInt{Scanner.java:2160}
at java.util.Scanner.nextInt{Scanner.java:2119}
at StudentGrades.main{StudentGrades.java:20}
the Exception is being thrown by your call to nextInt.
Thus, you're getting an exception because you're requesting an integer and the Scanner is finding something that's not an integer.

Yes, like others have suggested, your problem in in the line:
grades[studentNumber][courseNumber] = input.nextInt();
Because your input is not recognised as an integer.
You should also be aware that your code will not loop through five times, it will go through once and exit since if statements do not repeat.
To loop you should probably use a for loop, something along these lines:
for(int i = 0; i < 5; i++){
//You code should be the same in here
}
Or change your if's to while.

How to solve the error and how to do better way using oops concept?

I am learning java program. I have a question to solve . the question is
enter the no . of people:
enter the product_name, price, stock_available:
total amount is price * no. of people
if the stock available is less than the no of people the print value 0
Example:
**input:**
no . of people : 3
product_name, price, stock_available: book, 100, 3
**output:** 300
public class Product {
public static void main(String args[]) {
Scanner sc=new Scanner(System.in);
System.out.println("Enter the no . of people:");
int people=sc.nextInt();
String[] string = new String [3];
System.out.println("Enter the product_name, price, quantity_available:");
for (int i = 0; i < 3; i++)
{
string[i] = sc.nextLine();
}
int quantity=Integer.parseInt(string[2]);
int price=Integer.parseInt(string[1]);
if(people<=quantity) {
System.out.println("Total amout is:"+(price*people));
}
else
{
System.out.println("value is "+0);
}
}
}
console error:
Enter the no . of people:
3
Enter the product_name, price, quantity_available:
book
30
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NumberFormatException: For input string: "book"
How to solve this error and how to do better way using oops concept ?
For Loop I always prefer to read input using next() .
Using next() will only return what comes before the delimiter (defaults to whitespace). nextLine() automatically moves the scanner down after returning the current line.
As you were using sc.nextLine() this may one reason you were getting java.lang.NumberFormatException.
Try as sc.next(); to read your input
Your problem is you are using :
for (int i = 0; i < 3; i++)
{
string[i] = sc.nextLine();
}
this sc.nextLine() while taking input. Now the problem is sc.nextLine() reads a line until '\n' or enter is encountered. Now, for the first cycle in for loop it it putting a '\n' in the buffer. Because nextLine() stop taking input while '\n' encountered. So, In the next cycle the value of string[1] = '\n'. And when you try to parse this to an Integer then an error occurs. Because this is not an Integer.
Try this:
public static void main(String[] args) {
Scanner sc = new Scanner(System.in);
System.out.println("Enter the no . of people:");
int people = sc.nextInt();
String[] string = new String [3];
System.out.println("Enter the product_name, price, quantity_available:");
for (int i = 0; i < 3; i++)
{
string[i] = sc.next();
}
int price = Integer.parseInt(string[1]);
int quantity = Integer.parseInt(string[2]);
if(people <= quantity) {
System.out.println("Total amount is: "+ (price*people));
}
else
{
System.out.println("value is: "+0);
}
}
You can use an extra sc.nextLine() just before the loop...
sc.nextLine() ----> add this line
for (int i = 0; i < 3; i++)
{
string[i] = sc.nextLine();
}
when you press enter after getting the value of people... your string[] array takes a value in its 0 index position. So the nextLine scans only 2 values from the console and then throws an exception.
On that time your string[] values are = {"", "NAME", "PRICE"}
And you are trying to parse a string value (NAME) to int
According to your input style, your code does not serve your purpose.
Problem:
Case 1: You tried to input something like:
product_name, price, stock_available: book, 100, 3
But in your code, using for loop you tried to get 3 string values.
for (int i = 0; i < 3; i++)
{
string[i] = sc.nextLine();
}
So, after first input, when you press enter without any input, it throws java.lang.NumberFormatException: For input string: ""
Case 2: nextLine() scanner past the current line and returns the input that was skipped. This method returns the rest of the current line, excluding any line separator at the end. The position is set to the beginning of the next line.
Since this method continues to search through the input looking for a line separator, it may buffer all of the input searching for the line to skip if no line separators are present. And this is the reason, you may get this exception.
when the loop executes, string[0]'s value will be ""/blank string, which it gets from the buffered line separator. string[1]'s value will be your first string input(product_name).
so, when you tried to parse it as int, it threw number format exception.
Solution:
Case 1. If you want to take input in one line then, do not use for loop. Get input as a string and parse it to get your values.
String[] string = new String[3];
String inputString = null;System.out.println("Enter the product_name, price, quantity_available:");
inputString=sc.next();
string=inputString.split(",");
String product = string[0];
int quantity = Integer.parseInt(string[2]);
int price=Integer.parseInt(string[1]);
Case 2. If you do not solve the buffered line separator issue, then you should use next() method to take input.
This is very simple application. So, oop concept is not necessary for the current context.

Confusion on do-while loop

Here is my Code
import java.util.*;
public class dowhile
{
public static void main (String [] args)
{
Scanner kb = new Scanner (System.in);
System.out.println("Enter number of # to be displayed: ");
int tim = kb.nextInt();
String hash = "#";
do
{
System.out.println(hash);
hash = hash + 1;
} while (hash.equals(5));
}
}
I am confused on how to display number of # after asked by the user..
I know hash.equals(5) does not make sense.
how can i fix this code?
Any one please give the suggestion to me.
You could use tim as a counter, and decrement it before testing if it's greater than 0. Something like,
int tim = kb.nextInt();
do {
System.out.print("#");
} while (--tim > 0);
System.out.println();
You can also use Apache commons-lang3 which has StringUtils.repeat(String, int)
Parameters:
str - the String to repeat, may be null
repeat - number of times to repeat str, negative treated as zero
hash is the string that you are going to print, so you should never change its value like this:
hash = hash + 1; // this does not actually compile anyway.
To keep track of how many times you still need to print, you need an int variable. As you can see, tim is an int and it already has the user input stored in it. Let's use tim as our counter.
Each time you print a # you decrease tim by 1. And in the loop condition, you write tim > 0. This will make the loop run as long as tim is greater than 0.
Scanner kb = new Scanner(System.in);
System.out.println("Enter number of # to be displayed: ");
int tim = kb.nextInt();
String hash = "#";
do {
System.out.println(hash);
tim--; // this is equivalent to tim = tim - 1;, in case you did not know
} while (tim > 0);
However, I don't think using a do-while loop is suitable here. What if the user entered 0? One # will still be printed. That's no good isn't it?
I suggest a for loop here:
Scanner kb = new Scanner(System.in);
System.out.println("Enter number of # to be displayed: ");
int tim = kb.nextInt();
String hash = "#";
for (int i = 0 ; i < tim ; i++) {
System.out.println(hash);
}
Declare one int variable before the loop. Increment number by one in do and check then number in while loop is will print your desired output.
int i=0;
do
{
System.out.println(hash);
i=i + 1;
} while (i<tim);

Not a Statement Error - Where did I go wrong?

So, I am very new at coding but have a college assignment to create a Word Manipulator. I am supposed to get a string and an INT from the user and invert every Nth word, according to the int input.
I am following steps and am stuck with this error at line 38 (the start of my last FOR LOOP). The compiler is giving me an Not an Statement Error in this line but I cant see where I went wrong.
Could someone gimme a light, please?
ps: I am not allowed to use Token or inverse().
import java.util.Scanner;
public class assignment3 {
public static void main(String[] args) {
// BOTH INPUTS WERE TAKEN
Scanner input = new Scanner (System.in);
String stringInput;
int intInput;
System.out.println("Please enter a sentence");
stringInput = input.nextLine();
System.out.println("Please enter an integer from 1 to 10. \n We will invert every word in that position for you!");
intInput = input.nextInt();
int counter = 1;
// ALL CHARS NOW ARE LOWERCASE
String lowerCaseVersion = stringInput.toLowerCase();
// SPLIT THE STRING INTO ARRAY OF WORDS
String [] arrayOfWords = null;
String delimiter = " ";
arrayOfWords = lowerCaseVersion.split(delimiter);
for(int i=0; i< arrayOfWords.length; i++){
System.out.println(arrayOfWords[i]);
// THIS RETURNS AN ARRAY WITH ALL THE WORDS FROM THE INPUT
}
// IF THE INTEGER INPUT IS BIGGER THAN THE STRING.LENGTH, OUTPUT A MESSAGE
// THIS PART IS WORKING BUT I MIGHT WANT TO PUT IT IN A LOOP AND ASK FOR INPUT AGAIN
if (intInput > arrayOfWords.length){
System.out.println("There are not enough words in your sentence!");
}
// NOW I NEED TO REVERSE EVERY NTH WORD BASED ON THE USER INPUT
//THIS IS WHERE THE ERROR OCCURS
for(int i=(intInput-1); i<arrayOfWords.length; (i+intInput)){
char invertedWord[] = new char[arrayOfWords.length()];
for(int i=0; i < arrayOfWords.length();i++){
ch[i]=arrayOfWords.charAt(i);
}
for(int i=s.length()-1;i>=0;i--){
System.out.print(invertedWord[i]);
}
}
}
}
(i+intInput) isn't a statement. That's like saying 12. Perhaps you mean i=i+intInput or i+=intInput which assigns a value to a variable
well, for one thing, i dont see "s" (from s.length()) initiated anywhere in your code.

Sorting names entered by the user in alphabetical order according to the last name

I have completed most of the code by myself (with the help of a bit of Googling) but I have run into an unexpected problem. First-off, I have to sort a user entered list of names in aplhabetical order of their last names using selection sort. Here is my code:
import java.util.*;
class Name_Sort
{
public static void main (String args[])
{
Scanner in = new Scanner (System.in);
System.out.print ("Enter the number of names you wish to enter: ");
int n = in.nextInt();
String ar[] = new String [n];
for (int i = 0; i<ar.length; i++)
{
System.out.print("Please enter the name: ");
ar[i]= in.nextLine();
}
String temp;
for (int b = 0; b<n; b++)
{
for (int j=b+1; j<n; j++)
{
if ((compareLastNames(ar[b], ar[j]))>0)
{
temp = ar[b];
ar[b] = ar[j];
ar[j] = temp;
}
}
}
System.out.println ("The names sorted in alphabetical order are: ");
for (int a = 0; a<n; a++)
System.out.print (ar[a]+"\t");
}
private static int compareLastNames(String a, String b)
{
int index_a = a.lastIndexOf(" ");
String surname_a = a.substring(index_a);
int index_b = b.lastIndexOf(" ");
String surname_b = b.substring(index_b);
int lastNameCmp = surname_a.compareToIgnoreCase(surname_b);
return lastNameCmp;
}
}
The problem (I think) is arising when I'm taking the names from the user, specifically, this part:
Scanner in = new Scanner (System.in);
System.out.print ("Enter the number of names you wish to enter: ");
int n = in.nextInt();
String ar[] = new String [n]; //Array to store the names in.
for (int i = 0; i<ar.length; i++)
{
System.out.println("Please enter the name: ");
ar[i]= in.nextLine();
}
The output on the terminal window of BlueJ shows up as
Name_Sort.main({ });
Enter the number of names you wish to enter: 5
Please enter the name:
Please enter the name:
That is not what it's supposed to display. What could I be doing wrong? I've pondered over it for a while, but nothing comes to mind.
And, even if I do move forward and enter a few names despite the error above, I get another error in this part of my code here:
private static int compareLastNames(String a, String b)
{
int index_a = a.lastIndexOf(" ");
String surname_a = a.substring(index_a);// This is the line the compiler highlights.
int index_b = b.lastIndexOf(" ");
String surname_b = b.substring(index_b);
int lastNameCmp = surname_a.compareToIgnoreCase(surname_b);
return lastNameCmp;
}
the error is :
java.lang.StringIndexOutOfBoundsException: String index out of range: -1 (injava.lang.String)
Does this mean that the white-space character " " is not present? But why?
This is a screenshot of the terminal window:
http://imgur.com/l7yf7Xn
The thing is, if I just initialize the array with the names first (and not take any input from the user) the codes runs fine and produces the desired result. Any help please?
Also, since I know some people here are very particular about this, yes, this is a homework assignment, yes, I did do all of the code by myself, I googled on how to sort the names in alphabetical order as I couldn't exactly code out the original idea I had.
Which was comparing the ASCII values of each character of two surnames to see which should come first. Like: if((int) surname1.charAt(0)>(int) surname2.charAt(0)) then surname2 should come before surname1, else if they both have the same first character, take the second character and so on.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
The problem is with the in.nextInt() command it only reads the int value. So when you continue reading with in.nextLine() you receive the "\n" Enter key. So to get around this you will have to add an extra in.nextLine() before going into the loop. Or, use another scanner.
int n = in.nextInt();
String ar[] = new String [n]; //Array to store the names in.
in.nextLine(); // < --- an extra next Line
for (int i = 0; i<ar.length; i++)
{
System.out.println("Please enter the name: ");
ar[i]= in.nextLine();
}

I need of assistance with array assigning user inputs to an array, and do-while loop repeat

I'm having a few problems with my code, this is the over all goal of the program.
One of your professors hears of your emerging programming expertise and asks you to write a SINGLE program that can be used to help them with their grading. The professor gives three 50-point exams and a single 100-point final exam. Your program will prompt the user for the student’s name, entered as Firstname Lastname (i.e. Bob Smith), the student’s 3-exam scores and 1-final exam score (all whole numbers). Class size varies from semester to semester, but 100 is the limit (declare as a constant).
Read in information for ALL students before doing any calculations or displaying any output. Verify that the 3 exam scores are between 0-50 points and that the final is between 0-100 as they are entered. Declared minimums and maximums as constant so that they can easily be updated, as needed. If invalid, display an error message and allow the user to re-enter that invalid score. Once all student info is read in, display each student’s name in the format LASTNAME, FIRSTNAME (all uppercase), the student’s exam percentage (total of all exams plus final / total possible) to 1 decimal and the student’s final grade.
This is what I have:
import java.util.*;
import java.text.*;
public class Proj4 {
public static void main(String[] args){
Scanner s= new Scanner(System.in);
String input;
String again = "y";
final int MAX_STUDENTS = 100;
final int MIN_EXAM = 0;
final int MAX_EXAM = 50;
final int MIN_FINAL = 0;
final int MAX_FINAL = 100;
String[] names = new String[MAX_STUDENTS];
int [] exams = new int[MAX_STUDENTS * 4];
int student = 1;
do
{
System.out.print("PLease enter the name of student " + student + ": " );
for (int k = 0; k < 1; k++) {
names[k] = s.nextLine().toUpperCase();
}
for ( int i = 0; i < 4; i++){
if(i==3){
System.out.print("Please enter score for Final Exam: ");
exams[i] = s.nextInt();
}
else{
System.out.print("Please enter score for Exam " + (i+1) + ": ");
exams[i] = s.nextInt();
if((exams[0]<MIN_EXAM||exams[0]>MAX_EXAM)||(exams[1]<MIN_EXAM||exams[1]>MAX_EXAM)||(exams[2]<MIN_EXAM||exams[2]>MAX_EXAM)){
System.out.println("Invalid enter 0-50 only...");
System.out.print("Please re-enter score: ");
exams[i] = s.nextInt();
}
else if(exams[3]<MIN_FINAL||exams[3]>MAX_FINAL){
System.out.println("Invalid enter 0-100 only...");
System.out.print("Please re-enter score: ");
exams[i] = s.nextInt();
}
}
}
System.out.print("do you wish to enter another? (y or n) ");
again = s.next();
if(again!="y")
student++;
}while (again.equalsIgnoreCase ("y"));
System.out.println("***Class Results***");
System.out.println(names[1] + "," + names[0] + " " + "Exam Percentage: "+ ((exams[0]+exams[1]+exams[2]+exams[3])/(MAX_EXAM*3+MAX_FINAL)));
}
}
The problems i have have are:
figuring out how to assign the user entered test scores beyond just the first student, i believe i have it set up correct for just one, but it runs into a problem when i would move on to the second student.
For some reason that I cannot figure out the line
System.out.print("do you wish to enter another? (y or n) ");
again = s.next();
doesn't allow me to enter anything, not y not n not anything, so my program effectively ends there, it doesn't make sense to me because I've done it exactly like that before and it has worked.
other than that, if there are any other problems that you can see with my code pointing them out would be extremely helpful.
Thank you
EDIT-
new problem i am having, after changing to
if(!again.equalsIgnoreCase("y"))
student++;
}while (again.equalsIgnoreCase ("y"));
it lets me type things in now, but after i type in y it prints the next line as
Please enter the name of student 1: Please enter score for Exam 1:
I don't know why or what i need to change to fix it, any suggestions?
`if(again!="y")` is the culprit here
You should use equals() method to check string equality.
if(!again.equals("y"))
If you compare Strings in Java using the == or != operators then you are not actually comparing the values. Instead you are testing if the two Strings are the same Object.
This post explains String comparison well.
To do what you want, change if (again != "y") to if(! (again.equalsIgnoreCase("y")) )
EDIT
I believe your new problem stems from the first for loop you do inside your do loop. Each time you type "y" at the end of your do/while you are going to execute the entire
for (int k = 0; k < 1; k++) {
loop again. This is why after you type "y" you are seeing Please enter the name of student 1: Please enter score for Exam 1:
A "solution" to your new issue would be to make it so the outer for enclosed the inner one, looping through 4 exams for each student usually referred to as a "double for" or "nested for loop".
That said you would then be presented with the issue of having all the exams for ALL students in a single array.
I think now is the time to sit down and put some serious thought into the design of your program. It would be much easier for you if you used a Student object to represent a student and hold their exam scores, IMO. Then you could create an array of Students as opposed to two different arrays you have now.
Here are some "starter" steps (Not necessarily a complete list):
Make a Student class that has variables for the student's first & last name, as well as an array to hold that Students exam scores
In your main class create an ArrayList to hold all of the new Student objects you will be creating.
Do your do/while loop. At the beginning of the loop create a new Student object. Then ask for the Students name and exam scores (note that if you KNOW there will only be the 4 exam scores you don't have to do any extra logic there. You can simply ask for the 4 exam scores using a for loop, or if you want all at one time. if there are a variable number of scores you will have to do some sort of check)
Add the new Student you have created to the ArrayList of Students.
Once the person selects "n", loop through the ArrayList and print the information for each Student!
Your for (int k = 0; k < 1; k++) loop will execute only once (for one student) because you have it set up to execute only while k < 1, which will happen only once. As soon, as you increase k to 1, the loop will stop. I would change it to for (int k = 0; k < MAX_STUDENTS; k++) to make sure it will loop through until you reach the max number of students allowed.
