android:gravity acting strangely - java

I am new to android and have written a sample code
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:padding="5dp"
android:paddingBottom="#dimen/activity_vertical_margin"
android:paddingLeft="#dimen/activity_horizontal_margin"
android:paddingRight="#dimen/activity_horizontal_margin"
android:paddingTop="#dimen/activity_vertical_margin"
tools:context=".MainActivity"
android:orientation="horizontal"
>
<TextView
android:text="sample1"
android:id="#+id/textView1"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:gravity="right"
android:textStyle="bold"
android:layout_weight="4"
/>
<TextView
android:text="sample2"
android:id="#+id/textView2"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:background="#F90"
android:textColor="#F09"
android:layout_weight="5"
android:gravity="center"
/>
<TextView
android:text="sample3"
android:id="#+id/textView3"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:textColor="#F09"
android:layout_weight="3"
/>
<Button
android:text="Press"
android:id="#+id/button1"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:textColor="#F09"
android:layout_weight="4"
/>
</LinearLayout>
In textView2 id i changed layout_width to fill parent so that android:gravity attribute could be tested but when i set it to some value like center,bottom or top all other views also behave the same way?

When you use gravity its like real gravity, another planet inserted into the solar system and things go round different. If you have 2 items with gravity 1 they both are the same gravity they both take the same room. If another item enters the same system it depends how it compares to the gravity of whats there already as to what happens. Match parent expands to meet the outside. Wrap content shrink wraps the widget. I hope this explains it good enough in a non-technical kind of way.

Try this:
1. Set a Layout_gravity on your main layout
2. Then set gravities for each of the child components
Check this code (with only gravity attributes included):
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_gravity="center"
>
<TextView
android:text="sample1"
android:id="#+id/textView1"
android:gravity="left"
/>
<TextView
android:text="sample2"
android:id="#+id/textView2"
android:gravity="right"
/>
...
</LinearLayout>

if (holder.btnSelectPharmacy.getVisibility() == View.VISIBLE){
holder.btnSelectPharmacy.setVisibility(View.GONE);
} else {
holder.btnSelectPharmacy.setVisibility(View.VISIBLE);
}
I've tried many solutions so far including view animation, Object animator, Expandable layout (through library) but no luck so far!
looking forward for your suggestions.
I've a workaround for this to lift the card up but then I want to make my card expanded from upside exactly as like as in the above picture.
While using automatic layout animation on the child node, the result will be, that the parent node just snaps to layout_alignParentBottom & wrap_content once the child node is View.GONE.
Combining two animations could make it less jerky. I mean, the CardView would need it's height animated; either synchronously or once the child node is View.GONE. Actually, when animating the child node to height 0dp, this would also animate the parent node's height, since it's wrap_content; setting a static value for the height would also prevent it from snapping alike that. Also animating to View.INVISBLE and then animating it's height would prevent the parent node from snapping. Sorry for not providing a ready-made solution, but explaining why it behaves alike that and how it might work is still better than no answer.

Dynamically set the widths (weights) of Views inside a LinearLayout

I have a LinearLayout that contains four differently-colored Views. Each colored view represents the proportion of a workout's cumulative time spent in various heart-rate zones (blue -> green -> orange -> red).
I can get the desired effect by changing the android:layout_weight=".35" attribute in the various views in the XML. Setting these values does exactly what I want (when I don't override them in code). I think I'm just not accessing these properties correctly in code.
I have tried hard-coding nice, round sets of numbers and they don't look correct. The first one in the list appears much larger than it ought to be.

My code for changing them is the following
private final LinearLayout cardioBar;
private final View cardioZoneNone;
private final View cardioZoneFatburn;
private final View cardioZoneCardio;
private final View cardioZonePeak;
Float total = (float)exercise.exercise.getHrTotalDuration();
holder.cardioBar.setWeightSum(total);
holder.cardioZoneNone.setLayoutParams(new LinearLayout.LayoutParams(LinearLayout.LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT, LinearLayout.LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT,(float)exercise.exercise.getHrNone()));
holder.cardioZoneFatburn.setLayoutParams(new LinearLayout.LayoutParams(LinearLayout.LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT, LinearLayout.LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT,(float)exercise.exercise.getHrFatburn()));
holder.cardioZoneCardio.setLayoutParams(new LinearLayout.LayoutParams(LinearLayout.LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT, LinearLayout.LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT,(float)exercise.exercise.getHrCardio()));
holder.cardioZonePeak.setLayoutParams(new LinearLayout.LayoutParams(LinearLayout.LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT, LinearLayout.LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT,(float)exercise.exercise.getHrPeak()));
I have even tried hard-coding some values in place of the ones in my objects. Strangely, it seems that setting them to 0.25 (with a weightsum of 1.0) looks correct, but most others set the cardioZoneNone much, much larger than it ought to be.
When I log the values, the numbers look appropriate.
I had read that the width should only be set to zero when using weight attribute in XML, but not when setting weight from code. Perhaps this was true when that was written, but setting width to zero does seem to fix my issue

Android - Center View in Other View inside Layout

Hi I am having trouble centering my text view in an image view. I want it to look kinda like this but have it actually vertically centered and stay vertically centered if the the font size changes.
And here is what I have in XML I don't care if I need to change the relative layout to another kind that doesn't matter to me I just want to be able to center this. Heres the xml:
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools" android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent" android:paddingLeft="#dimen/activity_horizontal_margin"
android:paddingRight="#dimen/activity_horizontal_margin"
android:paddingTop="#dimen/activity_vertical_margin"
android:paddingBottom="#dimen/activity_vertical_margin"
tools:context="com.spencer.app.ProfileActivity"
android:id="#+id/layout">
<ImageView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:minHeight="140dp"
android:minWidth="140dp"
android:id="#+id/logoBackground"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:layout_alignParentStart="true"
android:layout_marginLeft="25dp"
android:layout_marginStart="25dp"
android:layout_marginTop="25dp"
android:contentDescription="#string/content_description_useless"
android:background="#ffffd0cd" />
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="#string/capital_u"
android:id="#+id/u_textView"
android:textSize="80sp"
android:layout_marginLeft="31dp"
android:layout_marginStart="31dp"
android:layout_marginTop="20dp"
android:layout_marginBottom="20dp"
android:layout_alignTop="#+id/logoBackground"
android:layout_alignLeft="#+id/logoBackground"
android:layout_alignStart="#+id/logoBackground" />
</RelativeLayout>
Thanks for the help in advance.
try this
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:id="#+id/layout"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:paddingBottom="#dimen/activity_vertical_margin"
android:paddingLeft="#dimen/activity_horizontal_margin"
android:paddingRight="#dimen/activity_horizontal_margin"
android:paddingTop="#dimen/activity_vertical_margin"
tools:context="com.spencer.app.ProfileActivity" >
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/logoBackground"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:layout_alignParentStart="true"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true"
android:layout_marginLeft="25dp"
android:layout_marginStart="25dp"
android:layout_marginTop="25dp"
android:background="#ffffd0cd"
android:contentDescription="#string/content_description_useless"
android:minHeight="140dp"
android:minWidth="140dp" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/u_textView"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignBottom="#+id/logoBackground"
android:layout_alignLeft="#+id/logoBackground"
android:layout_alignRight="#+id/logoBackground"
android:layout_alignStart="#+id/logoBackground"
android:layout_alignTop="#+id/logoBackground"
android:text="#string/capital_u"
android:textSize="80sp"
android:gravity="center" />
</RelativeLayout>
Your issue is that you're not centering a view INSIDE of something else, you're just trying to draw on top.
One possible solution would be to set the width and height of the TextView to be the same as the dimensions of the ImageView. Then, add this to your TextView's XML:
android:gravity="center"
But overall, this is NOT the right way to do this sort of stuff. You'd be much better off just changing the background of your TextView with something like this:
android:background="#ffffd0cd"
You can also change the background to be a drawable:
android:background="#drawable/my_logo_background_image"
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:id="#+id/layout"
tools:context="com.spencer.app.ProfileActivity">
<ImageView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:minHeight="140dp"
android:minWidth="140dp"
android:id="#+id/logoBackground"
android:layout_marginStart="25dp"
android:background="#ffffd0cd"
android:layout_centerVertical="true"
android:layout_centerHorizontal="true" />
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="U"
android:id="#+id/u_textView"
android:layout_marginTop="30dp"
android:layout_marginLeft="45dp"
android:textSize="80sp"
android:layout_alignTop="#+id/logoBackground"
android:layout_alignLeft="#+id/logoBackground"
android:layout_alignStart="#+id/logoBackground" />
I didnot changed much but Its work. Replace your code with this it will work for you. :)

Android Layout, positioning elements next to eachother

I am busy designing my first app in android but I am having some problems.
I have created this:
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical"
tools:context="com.mfr.calculatorapp.MainActivity">
<TextView
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:textSize="25sp"
android:layout_margin="15dp"
android:text="123"
android:id="#+id/textView" />
<Button
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:padding="#dimen/number_button_size"
android:textSize="#dimen/number_button_size"
android:layout_margin="10dp"
android:text="1"
android:id="#+id/button_1" />
<Button
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:padding="#dimen/number_button_size"
android:textSize="#dimen/number_button_size"
android:layout_margin="10dp"
android:text="1"
android:id="#+id/button_1" />
</LinearLayout>
But the two Buttons appear underneath each other and not on top of each other, I know that if I change orientation to horizontal that I will be able to position it next to each other but I want to be able to span a textview over the top.
What do I do?
Regards
Matt
You will want to use a relative layout. You will see the below code didn't need a lot of extra attributes to pull this off.
Notice that the buttons now have three additional attributes.
andoid:layout_below="#id/" : positions the element under another element
android:layout_alignWithParentIfMissing : if the above mentioned element is not present, align with the parent
android:layout_alignParentLeft : allows you to position one button to the left and one to the right
UPDATE use android:layout_alignRight="#id/textView" to properly align your second button to the right
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical"
tools:context="com.mfr.calculatorapp.MainActivity">
<TextView
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:textSize="25sp"
android:layout_margin="15dp"
android:text="123"
android:id="#+id/textView" />
<Button
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:padding="#dimen/number_button_size"
android:textSize="#dimen/number_button_size"
android:layout_margin="10dp"
android:text="1"
android:id="#+id/button_1"
android:layout_below="#id/textView"
android:layout_alignWithParentIfMissing="true"
android:alignParentLeft="true"
/>
<Button
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:padding="#dimen/number_button_size"
android:textSize="#dimen/number_button_size"
android:layout_margin="10dp"
android:text="2"
android:id="#+id/button_2"
android:layout_below="#id/textView"
android:layout_alignWithParentIfMissing="true"
android:alignParentRight="true"
android:layout_alignRight="#id/textView"
/>
</RelativeLayout>

How can I align this layout correctly?

I have two textviews. I want one of them to be left aligned and the other to be right aligned. Pretty much so that it looks like a 2 column table.
<LinearLayout android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:id="#+id/profileLayout" android:orientation="vertical">
<LinearLayout android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="match_parent" android:id="#+id/experience" android:orientation="horizontal">
<TextView android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:id="#+id/experienceLabel" android:textStyle="bold" android:layout_weight="0" android:text="Experience"></TextView>
<LinearLayout android:id="#+id/linearLayout4" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="match_parent" android:layout_weight="1"></LinearLayout>
<TextView android:text="TextView" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:id="#+id/experienceTextView" android:layout_gravity="right" android:layout_weight="0" android:layout_width="wrap_content"></TextView>
</LinearLayout>
</LinearLayout>
<LinearLayout android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="match_parent" android:orientation="horizontal">
<TextView android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_weight="1"/>
<TextView android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_weight="0" android:layout_width="wrap_content"/>
</LinearLayout>
Set the weight of the first one to 1 so it will eat up all of the extra space. Set the 2nd oen to wrap content, so it only takes up as much space as it needs.
But why do you have an extra LinearLayout around them? If you have nested LinearLayouts, you should probably be using a RelativeLayout instead.
<TextView android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:id="#+id/experienceLabel" android:textStyle="bold" android:layout_weight="1" android:text="Experience"></TextView>
<TextView android:text="TextView" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:id="#+id/experienceTextView" android:layout_weight="1" android:layout_width="wrap_content"></TextView>
</LinearLayout>
Use Relative Layout. About Relative Layout Link Example link
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content">
<TextView android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:id="#+id/experienceLabel"
android:textStyle="bold" android:layout_weight="0" android:text="Experience"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"/>
<TextView android:text="TextView" android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/experienceTextView" android:layout_gravity="right"
android:layout_weight="0" android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentRight="true" />
Benefit of using RelativeLayout: it reduces your number of layout. Which will optimize your ui too.
I'm not entirely sure of the exactly layout you want, but you can try this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/profileLayout"
android:orientation="vertical">
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:weightSum="2"
android:id="#+id/experience"
android:orientation="horizontal">
<TextView
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/experienceLabel"
android:textStyle="bold"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:text="Experience"/>
<TextView
android:text="TextView"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:id="#+id/experienceTextView"
android:gravity="right"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"/>
</LinearLayout>
</LinearLayout>
You were using layout_gravity rather than gravity also. layout_gravity tells the parent how you want to be laid out, gravity tells content how to be laid out.
Notice how I have a weightSum in the parent layout to 2 and then set the two children to a weight of 1 each. I also set the parent to fill_parent
You had and extra layout in there too - if you want spacing, set a margin on the second textview or use a view (a simpler object than a LinearLayout)
