Our company switched recently from Eclipse to IntelliJ(UE).
In Eclipse I had no problems hot swapping small Java class changes into the running tomcat. In IntelliJ however when I click "Update classes and resources" I get the notification that e.g. "1 class reloaded", and a few seconds after that the tomcat server restarts automatically. Nobody else at the company is experiencing that kind of problem and I'm pretty sure I use the same configuration they do.
How do I get true Hot Swap?
Further info :
IDE - IntelliJ IDEA 13.0.2
OS - Fedora 19
Thank you.

I started learning Java a week ago when I bought my Java book. I had IntelliJ IDEA before because I was playing with Java.
Now, I bought my Java book (5 days ago) and my IntelliJ just didn't work. I get an error file on my desktop and I really don't know what to do.
What happens actually:
I double click on intellij (no admin perms) it just opens in task manager for 10-20 seconds, then its gone.
I right click on intellij and run it as admin, but the same thing happens.

This seems still an open and non-reproducable issue. I suggest you to update your JDK and graphics card. This might help you.

I have a problem in Eclipse 4.7 (Oxygen) and Liferay IDE 3.1 When I alter my source code, my changes have no effect .
Earlier it was working if I restart liferay (was using liferay 2.6 and eclipse Mars and java7) from eclipse but now each time I have to do a dev ant-rebuild and then after starting server the changes reflect.
Have tried solution provided in other links like (Project -> Build Automatically)
add project in Server but nothing seems to work.
Based off your answer to the previous comments I have determined that you are expecting to see something that is no supposed to happen. If your server is running and you make a change to your Java files (any file ending in .java) you will not see the changes in your browser (on the GUI) until your save, compile, and deploy your changes.
So without any additional tools you will need to do the following for ever .java change.
Save changes
Run the ant compile target
Run the ant direct deploy target
You should see the deployment happen in the console and you can now refresh the page and view your changes. It is important to note that depending on your change you may need to restart the application container and clear temporary files.
There are a few exceptions to this.
JSP changes. You can view changes in your JSP automatically.
JRebel. For 6.2 development I cannot stress this product enough. Get a copy of My JRebel. With JRebel you can save your Java changes and see them immediately. This is a 3rd party tool though which traditionally costed 500usd. It is now free though
Sorry, this was too long for a comment. In the thrust of Olaf's comment though, you need to give more detail. Here are some shots in the dasrk and a question:
Upgrade to Liferay 3.1.1 if you haven't.
Do you see messages like the below ones in the log when you save an edited file? How about when you drag the project onto the running server (the server is running, right)?

Have you tried restarting eclipse?
I have used earlier versions of eclipse in many of my developments. Now after a break of some time I downloaded eclipse Neon Release (4.6.0). I created a Java Project and Simple HelloWorld Java file. I was surprised that it is not even compiling. The error I am getting is as below .
Blocked:The User operation is waiting for "Build workspace" to
complete. Below there is a msg : Building workspace(Sleeping)
It seems like a deadlock situation. Did anyone face this issue, any solutions ?
We have several Play 2 applications and modules and I'm having trouble integrating IntelliJ IDEA 13 into my development process. I have an empty project based on the common parent of the apps and I have imported each app as a module using the import existing SBT project option.
My problem is that every time I launch the project, IntelliJ causes SBT to completely rebuild all 9 modules at the same time. Since they all depend on one sbt.lock file being available, it's usually the case that 8 of the apps are waiting at any one time, and it takes ~15 minutes for the refreshing to finish. As it spawns an sbt process for each module, my VM's 5GB of RAM and 5GB of swap space are entirely filled, causing further slowdown.
This is completely unacceptable. I'm going back to Eclipse if I can't solve this problem, event if IntelliJ IDEA is better suited to my development otherwise. How can I disable these automatic rebuilds at startup, or at least serialize them?
It appears this is an open request: SCL-7061 Disable SBT project refreshing You may want to try the IDEA 14 Preview release (and the updated Scala Plug-in) to see if the issue is resolved or better there. I know there has been some improvements to Scala and SBT in IDEA 14. If it works for you, you can switch to using the IDEA 14 EAP builds until it is released later this year.
I'm using GGTS to create some projects in Grails but this IDE is terribly slow.
I have two projects in my IDE (sometimes both running) and after small changes GGTS starts to build workspace which takes A LOT of time, sometimes it never ends and just crashes, sometimes it makes so hard deadlock that I MUST restart my computer.
My environment: win 7 64-bit, Intel i5-2500 3,30GHz, 8GB RAM, GGTS v. 3.1.0, java 1.6.0_30, grails 2.2.0.
I've read that there is possible to do something like this:
Window - > Preferences - > General -> Workspace - > Linked Resource - Disable linked resource,
but I'm not sure if I can do this, cause Grails projects are connected with this place, I believe: C:\Users\username.grails\2.2.0\projects
What can I do? Is the only way out this problem is buying IntelliJ or working with some text editor and console? How to repair this buggy Eclipse?
Go to Project->uncheck the "Build Automatically" option. This is by default checked. So, when ever you do any change in the code, it automatically tries to build every time. Unchecking this option will save you a lot of time, as you can run it whenever you want (it builds only when you run the code.)
I use emacs for Grails development, but I would definitely recommend IntelliJ, unless you can work without code assist.
From what I've seen Eclipse with plugins, STS or GGTS are extremely buggy when working with Grails:
Workspace corruptions
Poor completion for dynamic methods
Sometimes you can't save files
etc.
Putting this: -vm
C:\devsw\java\jdk7_67\jre\bin\server\jvm.dll in my GGTS.ini (and restarting GGTS) has stopped the blue circle from spinning.
