I know how to use substring() but why isn't this working, the user inputs an equation like
"5t + 1" with a space before and after the "+". I want tVariable to hold the integer before it, in this case 5 and constant should hold the constant integer in this case 1, but I get an out of range error.

You need to change it to something more like
constant = L1x.substring(L1x.lastIndexOf(" ")).trim();
Then when you add the numbers, you have to Parse them before you add them.

The reason you are getting this error is because your substring() range is off.
You are passing into substring() an invalid range because the first index is beginIndex which you set equal to lastIndexOf(" ") while endIndex2 you set equal to indexOf("") which will occur at the beginning of the string.
Thus, you have your ranges mixed up. When you make this statement:
constant = L1x.substring(beginIndex, endIndex2);
You're giving it an invaid range
and will cause the specified error.
You could also do it different way. Let's say you create a JFrame and there you could put a textfield for every value, so for every "t" or constants, and then it would be much more simple to get those values. For characters like t or = you could use JLabels, so it would be a mixture of JTextFields and JLabels and I think it wouldn't be that ugly. I used this solution few times.

You can assign values to variables, not other values. Statements like 5 = 2 or 'a' = 'z' don't work in Java, and that's why you're getting an error. swapped.charAt(temp1) returns some char value you're trying to overwrite, it's not a reference to a particular position inside the String or a variable you can alter (also, mind that Java Strings are immutable so you can't really change them in any way after creation).
Refer to http://docs.oracle.com/javase/7/docs/api/java/lang/String.html for information on using String, it should have a solution for what you're trying to do.

It returns the value of the character; assigning values to that returned value in the following lines is the problem:

Also, String#charAt(int) expects an index of a character within the String, not the character itself (i.e. chatAt(temp1) is incorrect), so your method will not work as expected even if you fix the former problem.

In straight words You can't. You can't add space in int datatype because int is meant to store the integer value only. Change int to String to store the space in between.
Okay, let's see what's wrong with your code...
Your for-loop is 1-based instead of the standard 0-based. That's not good at all.
You're attempting to assign a char to a String (3 times), the first call to charAt is correct, but for some reason you then switch to using a String?
Finally you're attempting to assign a String to an int, which is just completely nonsensical.
You have a number of problems, but well done on an honest attempt.
First up, the indexes in a string are zero-based, so charAt(0) gives you the first character, charAt(1) gives you the second character, and so on.
Secondly, repeating all your calls to charAt three times is probably unnecessary.
Thirdly, you must be careful with your types. The return value from charAt is a char, not a String, so you can't assign it to a String variable. Likewise, on the last line, don't assign a String to an int variable.
Lastly, I don't think you've thought about what happens if the text field doesn't contain enough characters.
Bearing these points in mind, please try again, and ask for further help if you need it.

I think what your are trying to do is to extract the coefficients from the user input. Your approach might work but there would be many case that you have to consider (+/- signs for example). Instead why don't you try Java's regular expressions

You can adapt this fragment and use it in your code. I , however, supposed that your coefficients are integer numbers. If you need them, instead, to be double you have to change the format of the given regex and also to change Integer.parseInt to Double.parseDouble. You are extracting a character from the input string and trying to add it to the second entry in an uninitialized array. You're line in code is:
myArr[1] += c;
myArr is an integer array and c is a character. You can't do that in java. What's more, you are trying to add a char to an int, which was not initialized in the first place!! The type of everything in an array must be the same. This gets more complicated when it comes to inheritance and such, but for now just know that you can't do that. If you wanted the Integer value of a character you can use:
Integer.parseInt(c)
I'm not sure what you are trying to do with your statement, but I'm 90% sure that it's not trying to do what you want it to. For reference:
myCharArr[i] = c;
assigns the i-th element (starting from 0) to the value of c. So if i=1 and myCharArr was initialized to 3 elements long, it would look like this:
[ ? | c | ?]
where ? is just a garbage value.

In java you need to initialize your arrays, or use a more dynamic List object. The thing with primitive arrays is that their size cannot change, i.e. when an primitive array is initialized:
int arr[] = new int[5];
it stays the same size (in this case 5). If you use something like an ArrayList, you can add as many things as you want. The way you would initialize ArrayLists would be like:
ArrayList<Integer> intArr = new ArrayList<Integer>();
ArrayList<Character> charArr = new ArrayList<Character();
and with those initialized you can do:
intArr.add(someInt);
charArr.add(someChar);
You can use primitive arrays for this problem but it will save you a bit of trouble if you use Lists.

You algorithm is wrong, it seems what you need to do is to extract out every nth character from source string, for example:
String source = "Book";
End result should be "Bo"
The algorithm should be:
Iterate through each character in the original string, use a stride as you need, in this case, a stride of 2 should do (so rather than increment by one, increment by the required stride)
Take the character at that index and add it to your second string
The end result should be a string which holds every nth character.
I don't really understand what you are attempting, but I can tell you what you are doing. Your loop structure does the following:
when i = 0, it compares all characters in both strings (0 + n = n, so the inner loop goes from x - title1.length()).
when i = 1, compare all characters except the first one (for size x, 1 + n = x - 1 comparisons).
when i =2, compare x / 2 characters (for size x, 2 + n = x / 2)
when i = 3, compare x / 3 characters
... and so on
System.out.print(title.charAt(0,1)) Shouldn't even compile. charAt(int) is the correct call. And if title length is greater than 0, this will always print a String with a single character -- the first one in title. And it will always be the same unless you reassign title to a different String.
Also this code will always throw an IndexOutOfBoundsException at title.charAt(i+x) when i = title.length() - 1 and x > 0.
I have to do this for an assignment in my java class. I have been searching for a while now, but only find solutions with regex etc.
For my assignment however I may only use charAt(), length() and/or toCharArray(). I need to get from a string like gu578si300 for example just the numbers so it will become: 578300.
i know numbers are 48 - 57 in ASCII but i can't figure out how to do this in java. You guys any ideas?

Do a for loop that iterates for the total amount of characters within the string (.length). Check if the character is a digit using the charAt and isDigit methods.
You could do a loop that checks a character in the string, and if it's a number, append it to another string:

It seems like a reasonable approach, but I'd make a couple of changes from what you suggested:
If you need to result as a string then use a StringBuilder instead of an array.
Use character literals like '0' and '9' instead of ASCII codes to make your code more readable.

The specific problem with your code is this line:
temp = temp + (int)c;
This converts the character to its ASCII value and then converts that to a decimal string containing the ASCII value. That's not what you want. Use this instead:
temp += c;
