I have been messing around with this for a few days now and have the code identical to that in the tutorial and yet it still doesn't want to work, Why?
MainActivity.java
package com.example.mdpmk1;
import android.app.Activity;
import android.content.Context;
import android.content.Intent;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.widget.Button;
import android.view.View;
import android.view.View.OnClickListener;
public class MainActivity extends Activity {
Button button;
#Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
addListenerOnButton();
}
public void addListenerOnButton() {
final Context context = this;
button = (Button) findViewById(R.id.scan);
button.setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View arg0) {
Intent intent = new Intent(context, ScanScreen.class);
startActivity(intent);
}
});
}
}
activity_main.xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="#+id/linearLayout1"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"

<TextView

<Button

ScanScreen.java

public class ScanScreen extends Activity {

}
}

android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent" >
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textView1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="You have done it!!"
android:textAppearance="?android:attr/textAppearanceLarge" />
</LinearLayout>
AndroidMainfest.xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<manifest xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
package="com.example.firstapp"
android:versionCode="1"
android:versionName="1.0" >
<uses-sdk
android:minSdkVersion="8"
android:targetSdkVersion="18" />
<application
android:allowBackup="true"
android:icon="#drawable/ic_launcher"
android:label="#string/app_name"
android:theme="#style/AppTheme" >
<activity
android:name="com.example.firstapp.MainActivity"
android:label="#string/app_name" >
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
</application>
</manifest>
Any help would be lovely, This has relay been annoying me and i know that it is probably a simple mistake.
Add the following in your AndroidManifest.xml
<activity android:name=".ScanScreen" />
within application like so:
<application
android:allowBackup="true"
android:icon="#drawable/ic_launcher"
android:label="#string/app_name"
android:theme="#style/AppTheme" >
<activity
android:name="com.example.firstapp.MainActivity"
android:label="#string/app_name" >
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
<activity android:name=".ScanScreen" />
</application>
Here is a quote from the official docs on what the activity tags are for:
Declares an activity (an Activity subclass) that implements part of
the application's visual user interface. All activities must be
represented by elements in the manifest file. Any that are
not declared there will not be seen by the system and will never be
run.
That last sentence is important.
In your case writing <activity android:name=".ScanScreen" /> above </application> will solve your problem.
Whenever you need to use any activity in android you have to mention it in AndroidManifest.xml file. Just giving answer to you won't help you.
You should first read on below links to understand what is intent and intent-filters used for.
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/content/Intent.html
http://developer.android.com/guide/components/intents-filters.html
What is an Intent in Android?
Your app crashes because your not setting or registered the activity in manifest.You haven't added the ScanScreen Activity in your manifest file.
Just add the following to your AndroidManifest.xml :
<activity android:name=".ScanScreen" />
within your application tag like this:
<application
android:allowBackup="true"
android:icon="#drawable/ic_launcher"
android:label="#string/app_name"
android:theme="#style/AppTheme" >
<activity
android:name="com.example.firstapp.MainActivity"
android:label="#string/app_name" >
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
<activity android:name=".ScanScreen" />
</application>
I am learning Android development with Lynda video tutorials.
I am using the Google map API v2, to display a map. I have done all the steps according to the tutorial.
when i try to view the application in my device, the application loads I can see the Google logo but map is not visible. (i see the white background with Google logo at the bottom).
I have added my code and the screenshot. can someone please help me to fix this. thank you..

You can only view it in a phone.
What you see now is all you can get in the Emulator.
You're not asking for any of the gps permissions.
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION"/>
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION"/>
Also since you're using fake locations, you might want to include this one as well. I don't know if it's relevant in this case, but just in case.
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.ACCESS_MOCK_LOCATION"/>
Also, I know you said you're currently testing on a device, but for anyone who's curious about running google maps on an emulator (with the new Google Play dependency), it can be done this way.
Did you generate the API-Key with your debug-keystore or do you sign the application with a another keystore to build for the device? The API-Key is bind to a keystore and must be changed if you sign with another keystore or another debug-keystore on another developer-machine.
seems the guy who wrote about the permissions was right,
but I had the same problem and the solution was to correct the package name in the
internet site of google where you get the api key.
because I built at the same day another project with almost the same package name,
and forgot I produced the api key with that project,it didn't work for me with the second project.
I have tried with both solutions given for my previous problem which was giving me error in Google Map, the reason was I was mixing API1 and API2 code structure in my example, but after I got this reason of my problem I have again create 2 examples one for API1 and second for API2 but in any of example I had not got solution it can not run my application into tablet and gives me problem like:
"Application stopped unexpectedly.please try again".
So anybody can help me exacltly where I'm wrong, I'm going to put my whole code of API1 example and API2 example with this forum.

For the Google Maps API V2, for what I see now you are using the wrong Activity for your map layout. You are using the SupportMapFragment fragment, and there for you have to use the FragmentActivity object and not a simple Activity. try to change it to FragmentActivity.
And tell us what changed.
I tried to write a simple google map application to display simple map but doesn't give me any output.
I pasted my code below:
AnroidManifest.xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<manifest xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
package="org.HelloGoogleMaps"
android:versionCode="1"
android:versionName="1.0">
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.INTERNET"/>
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION"/>
<application android:icon="#drawable/icon" android:label="#string/app_name">
<uses-library android:name="com.google.android.maps" />
<activity android:name=".HelloGoogleMaps"
android:label="#string/app_name">
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
</application>
</manifest>
My layout file is:
map.xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content">
<com.google.android.maps.MapView
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="#+id/mapview"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:clickable="true"
android:apiKey="0Z1oyeAgSpj4FSEtenPqiL7RsCXA_pVPQhvtpdA"
/>
</LinearLayout>
And my java class file is:
HelloGoogleMaps.java
package org.HelloGoogleMaps;
import com.google.android.maps.MapView;
import android.app.Activity;
import android.os.Bundle;
public class HelloGoogleMaps extends Activity {
#Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.map);
MapView mapView = (MapView) findViewById(R.id.mapview);
mapView.setBuiltInZoomControls(true);
}
protected boolean isRouteDisplayed() {
return false;
}
}
I can't see your layout file, but have you set a proper API key?
http://code.google.com/android/maps-api-signup.html
Your HelloGoogleMaps should inherit the MapsActivity
Just change your code to
public class HelloGoogleMaps extends MapActivity {
#Override
protected boolean isRouteDisplayed() {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub
return false;
}
}
i have a little trouble with the android mapview. It simply crashes every time i try to open the app!
Code:
package com.jappapps.android.travelbuddy;
import android.os.Bundle;
import com.google.android.maps.MapActivity;
import com.google.android.maps.MapView;
public class TravelBuddy extends MapActivity {
/** Called when the activity is first created. */
#Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.main); // changed to lowercase
MapView mapView = (MapView) findViewById(R.id.mapview); // match id in main.xml
mapView.setBuiltInZoomControls(true);
}
#Override
protected boolean isRouteDisplayed() {
return false;
