When the app is loading, instead of a proper splash screen it just shows, the best way to describe it, when you go to install an app from the Play store, the black screen with the icon in the top left corner and some text, that's all it shows when launching my app...
I narrowed it down to activity_game.xml as when looking in the Graphical Layout of that file, it just shows a boring black screen with text.
How would I change this to incorporate a full screen image on splash instead?
Let's say for example, the image is called 'loading.png'
Content of activity_game.xml is below;
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:paddingBottom="#dimen/activity_vertical_margin"
android:paddingLeft="#dimen/activity_horizontal_margin"
android:paddingRight="#dimen/activity_horizontal_margin"
android:paddingTop="#dimen/activity_vertical_margin"
tools:context=".GameActivity" >
<TextView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="#string/hello_world" />
</RelativeLayout>
--- Edit -
Thanks Rod, works to the point I now get a black screen on launch, I copied loading.png into the drawable folder and use the code like this;
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
tools:context=".GameActivity" >
<ImageView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:background="#drawable/loading"
android:adjustViewBounds="true"
android:scaleType="fitXY" />
</RelativeLayout>
Not sure why it is not loading the image?
First you need to make your activity full screen by setting the theme to no title bar into your activity tag of the manifest and add this:
android:theme="#android:style/Theme.NoTitleBar.Fullscreen"
Dont add padding to the RelativeLayout to avoid the black screen border, instead of TextView use the ImageView to create an image to the layout.
sample:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
tools:context=".GameActivity" >
<ImageView
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:background="your_drawable_image"
android:adjustViewBounds="true"
android:scaleType="fitXY" />
</RelativeLayout>

i work on an app that displays a page through a webview. I have implemented my own progress bar and it works fine. However i cannot get rid of the default android progress bar that keeps showing up (the three gray dots). The round progress indicator is mine the dots are the default.
The problem
My XML:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<androidx.swiperefreshlayout.widget.SwipeRefreshLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
tools:context=".MainActivity"
android:id="#+id/swipeLayout">
<ViewFlipper
android:id="#+id/simpleViewFlipper"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent">
<WebView
android:id="#+id/splashWebview"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
/>
<WebView
android:id="#+id/webview"
style="#android:style/Widget.Material.Light.WebView"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
/>
<ProgressBar
android:id="#+id/progressBar"
style="?android:attr/progressBarStyle"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:visibility="gone"
android:indeterminateTint="#000000"
android:layout_gravity="center_vertical|center_horizontal"
/>
</ViewFlipper>
</androidx.swiperefreshlayout.widget.SwipeRefreshLayout>
I only have this problem with the webview with id=webview.
In WebView there is no progress by default while loading the web page, the three-dot progress that you are viewing must be from the website which you are loading
I'm currently using a Card View inside a recycler and the text is left-alligned despite my efforts.
Here is the Book Item Layout.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<androidx.cardview.widget.CardView
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
app:cardCornerRadius="4dp"
app:cardElevation="5dp"
app:cardUseCompatPadding="true"
app:cardBackgroundColor="#color/white">
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
>
<TextView
android:id="#+id/bookTitleTextView"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
app:layout_constraintLeft_toLeftOf="parent"
app:layout_constraintRight_toRightOf="parent"
app:layout_constraintTop_toTopOf="parent"
app:layout_constraintBottom_toBottomOf="parent"
android:layout_gravity="center_horizontal"
/>
</LinearLayout>
</androidx.cardview.widget.CardView>
Here is the recycler itself.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<androidx.recyclerview.widget.RecyclerView
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:id="#+id/bookRecycler" />
This is the current output.
enter image description here
As you can see the text is not centered.
I tried using layout gravity to center the text which didn't work.
I also tried using a constraint layout on the text view and using constraints to center the text without any luck.
android:layout_gravity = "center" has already been attempted.
Any advice on what I'm overlooking would be great.
Thank you.
add android:gravity="center" for LinearLayout and you are good to go
I see your LinearLayout have only one child and no special attributes, so you can even remove whole LinearLayout - place TextView straight inside CardView, which extends FrameLayout. For centering childs inside FrameLayout you may also use android:gravity="center" for parent and/or android:layout_gravity="center" for child
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<androidx.cardview.widget.CardView
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:gravity="center"
app:cardCornerRadius="4dp"
app:cardElevation="5dp"
app:cardUseCompatPadding="true"
app:cardBackgroundColor="#color/white">
<TextView
android:layout_gravity="center"
... rest of code
android:gravity="center" is the correct code, instead of android:layout_gravity="center_horizontal"
When I hit enter key many times my top layout is moving up, how to solve this?
The only way I know is adding attribute in the manifest.xml, but doing this will make I can't see the cursor when at the bottom screen.
like below:
<activity
...
android:windowSoftInputMode="adjustNothing" />
my_layout.xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:orientation="vertical"
>
<com.google.android.material.appbar.AppBarLayout
android:id="#+id/appBar"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="58dp"
android:paddingBottom="4dp"
>
<RelativeLayout
android:id="#+id/toolsLayout"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
>
...
</RelativeLayout>
</com.google.android.material.appbar.AppBarLayout>
<RelativeLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_marginHorizontal="8dp"
android:layout_marginVertical="8dp"
>
<com.google.android.material.textfield.TextInputEditText
android:id="#+id/inputText"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:paddingHorizontal="12dp"
android:paddingVertical="8dp"
android:gravity="top"
android:lineSpacingExtra="4dp"
android:textSize="16sp"
android:textColor="#6F5CB3"
/>
</RelativeLayout>
</LinearLayout>
Set the max lines of your textInputEditText to 1
Simply set the max number of lines to 1 in your textInputEditText through the following attribute:
android:maxLines="1"
As a result, you will not be able to press the enter key(to go to a new line) in your textInputEditText, and this unwanted behavior will not occur.
Use the adjustResize attribute
You can also try using this attribute:
android:windowSoftInputMode="adjustResize"
...to allow the system to resize and make sure all the content in your app is accessible.
As you can see on the upper image, there are align options "to RightOf=button", "below=button" when you drag something, but when I drag something nothing like that is shown. Can anyone help me fix that?
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
app:layout_behavior="#string/appbar_scrolling_view_behavior"
tools:context=".MainActivity"
tools:showIn="#layout/activity_main">
<TextView
android:id="#+id/text_witaj_uzytkowniku"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="#string/witaj_uzytkowniku" />
</RelativeLayout>
Honestly, I prefer to use ConstraintLayout as the root. I believe it is much easier to use with the drag and drop tool.
When using it make sure that all objects are connected to each other(or the parent) at least once vertically and once horizontally.
How this looks in the code:
<androidx.constraintlayout.widget.ConstraintLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent">
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textView9"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_marginStart="24dp"
android:layout_marginTop="24dp"
android:text="TextView"
app:layout_constraintStart_toStartOf="parent"
app:layout_constraintTop_toTopOf="parent" />
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textView10"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_marginTop="16dp"
android:text="TextView"
app:layout_constraintStart_toStartOf="#+id/textView9"
app:layout_constraintTop_toBottomOf="#+id/textView9" />
</androidx.constraintlayout.widget.ConstraintLayout>
You can also adjust the distances using the side panel.
To use the layout you just need to type Constraint layout in the Pallete and drag it (if it is not installed, there will be a download)
Set position of your textview then try to add another view by dragging
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
app:layout_behavior="#string/appbar_scrolling_view_behavior"
tools:context=".MainActivity"
tools:showIn="#layout/activity_main">
<TextView
android:id="#+id/text_witaj_uzytkowniku"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentTop ="true"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:text="#string/witaj_uzytkowniku" />
</RelativeLayout>
I think instead of Relativelayout, you should use the CoordinatorLayout.
And if you continue with Relativelayout then go to file invalidate and restart your Android studio if this is cache related issue then resolved it.
Use Coordinator Layout to work. RelativeLayout is more of coding layout..
I have following code for main layout:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:id="#+id/layout"
android:gravity="center"
android:background="#00000000"
android:orientation="vertical" >
<ImageView
android:id="#+id/imageView1"
android:layout_width="200dp"
android:layout_height="200dp"
android:background="#FFFFFF" />
</LinearLayout>
I need that the LinearLayout will be transparent. I thought that I can do it using the alpha setting in a background attibute, but it doesn't work. Please, tell me - I need that my application will be empty and has a white rectangle on the center of a screen.
You want the activity to be transparent?
Try using this theme in your activity tag (in the manifest file): #android:style/Theme.Translucent
For other possible ways, ie child theme see the following answers:
Activity should be transparent, but has black background
How do I create a transparent Activity on Android?
how to make activities transparent
Use below line in the xml file:
<Linearlayout android:background="#android:color/transparent"/>
