Getting a java bean property value by annotation - java

How do I get the returned value from a java bean property by annotation?
For example, trying to get the returned value of the property id from a Hibernate entity using its annotation (#Id).

I've eliminated the requirement of using javassist for this question.

I don't know much details about javassit internal except that hibernate uses it internally, but surely can tell you that spring reflection util have a powerful support for handling things like processing all the classes which have an annotation on properties[e.g.] [user defined or not].In case you don't find success with javassist, give a try to spring reflection api.

Dynamically setting and getting bean properties in XPages

Just another Java problem (I'm a noob, I know): is it possible to use dynamic property binding in a Custom Control with a dynamic property getter in a Java bean?
I'll explain. I use this feature extensively in my Custom Controls:

This is used in a control where both datasource and the name of the field are passed as parameters. This works, so far so good.
Now, in some cases, the datasource is a managed bean. When the above lines are interpreted, apparently code is generated to get or set the value of ... something. But what exactly?
I get this error: Error getting property 'SomeField' from bean of type com.sjef.AnyRecord which I guess is correct for there is no public getSomeField() in my bean. All properties are defined dynamically in the bean.
So how can I make XPages read the properties? Is there a universal getter (and setter) that allows me to use the name of a property as a parameter instead of the inclusion in a fixed method name? If XPages doesn't find getSomeField(), will it try something else instead, e.g. just get(String name) or so?
As always: I really appreciate your help and answers!
The way the binding works depends on whether or not your Java object implements a supported interface. If it doesn't (if it's just some random Java object), then any properties are treated as "bean-style" names, so that, if you want to call ".getSomeField()", then the binding would be like "#{obj.someField}" (or "#{obj['someField']}", or so forth).
If you want it to fall back to a common method, that's a job for either the DataObject or Map interfaces - Map is larger to implement, but is more standard (and you could inherit from AbstractMap if applicable), while DataObject is basically an XPages-ism but one I'm a big fan of (for reference, document data sources are DataObjects). Be warned, though: if you implement one of those, EL will only bind to the get or getValue method and will ignore normal setters and getters. If you want to use those when present, you'll have to write reflection code to do that (I recommend using Apache BeanUtils).

Required field in model

Before I was using Python NDB API and there was required attribute which I can set on properties. I can't find anything similar in Objectify documentation. How to do that with Objectify?
You may want to use the standard java bean validation framework for this:

It seems that objectify has no such functionality, where you would require user to set a value of field.
You can however prevent saving of fields with null value: #IgnoreSave(IfNull.class). (you can use any of the [If][2] subclasses: IfDefault, IfEmpty, IfEmptyString, IfFalse, etc..)

Java Annotation: On property or on method? What the difference

Hibernate Search, Hibernate, Struts2... I see more examples... In same examples I see the annotation on the field.. Other on the get/set method.. There are differences? Or is casual..
I hope that is not a stupid question!

The difference depends on the annotation and how it is used. For example, in Spring you can use the #Controller annotation only on a class. This tells Spring that the class is a controller.
As far as methods are concerned, #RequestMapping is an annotation that goes on a method. For properties, you can have validation annotations like #NotNull (in Hibernate validator).
Annotations are definitely not casual; they carry meaning and can affect the way the code behaves.
From the Java documentation regarding annotations:

You can specify what an annotation can annotate by specifying the the elements (using a #Target annotation) when you define your own annotation.
This really depends on the code that interprets the annotations. It can of course make a difference, but the annotations you are talking about are probably meant to annotate a "property", which is something that technically does not exist in Java.
Java has fields and methods, but these are used to simulate properties under the "Java Bean" conventions, i.e. you have a public setX() and a getX() method that often (but not always) write and read a private field x. They're tied together via a naming condition, not a language mechanism.
Because of that, most frameworks that use annotations for such properties (e.g. for persistence mapping or dependency injection) are flexible and allow you to annotate either the field or the get or set method.

make java custom annotation to mark bean properties for html cleansing

Can I use a Java custom annotation to add some code to a set or get method on a bean property to cleanse the property from bad html being input by my users? I've been looking for examples but I've not seen something that I feel I can extend.
You could define a custom annotation to add a validator to your setter, but is there a reason why you don't want to just embed validation into your bean without an annotation? The annotation mechanism might be difficult for others to understand if they ever need to work with your code.
I would do it this way: Rather than have your property be a String, define your own HtmlString (assuming an equivalent class doesn't already exist in a standard library) which can only be instantiated with valid HTML. Then, have your bean property be of that type. This would solve the validation problem in your component.
Define validation methods in the HtmlString to fit your requirements, so that every HtmlString instance is valid HTML; then, simply define a toString method. This method would likely be much easier for others to follow.

Commonly reusable annotations or commons annotations?

Are there any commonly usable annotations available? Similar to commons-lang?
If not, have you seen any effective use of annontations (not built-in annotations) as part of any open source application development.
I remember Mifos was using it for Transaction.

i think Hibernate Validator has really good and reusable annotations for any kind of validation. it is based on a the reference implementation for JSR 303: Bean Validation.
Only non-standard annotations I've used more than once outside my testing project have been WicketStuff Annotations which are very useful in their own context.
Another interesting annotation set which is also the basis for JSR-305 is FindBugs' annotations which also may prove useful in the future - we'll see how that goes.

The annotation processor generates the PersonGen superclass.
Note that I'm currently working on a major change to them and the API is changing (I'll still leave the current version available, but the 3.x.x version stream will be breaking)

JAXB defines annotations (javax.xml.bind.annotation) that are reused to some degree -- although they are named to indicate they only related to XML serialization, most of metadata has to do with annotating properties to serialize, so they can be used for serializing to other data formats (such as JSON) too. Jackson JSON processor supports them, along its own 'native' annotations, since there are no really standardizes non-data-format specific annotations (AFAIK).
