I'm trying to bundle my .jar to a MacOSX app bundle, using app bundler.
I'm following this tutorial.
It says to add a lib folder to the high-level project directory, but I don't know what that means. I've been looking everywhere for it, and I cannot find out what it is. That's my only problem I have, anyone know?

Download Java Application Bundler and place it in the lib directory of your project. You will need to create this directory...
Create a new Ant script into your project directory, call it what ever you like...Also, take the time to read through the AppBundler Task Docs

Build your project
Run the ant script, using (something like) ant -f {You App Bundler script}
The app bundle, in this case ButtonDemo.app will be created in appBundle directory. If you can, browse the contents of the ButtonDemo.app/Contents/Java and make sure all your required Jar files are there...

1- There is no default target specified by the project tag. Think of this like your "main class" or "main" method, without, ant has no idea what you want to run...

2- The name of the taskdef is significant and you use it in the any script to identify what ant should do when it hits your tag reference...
So based on your example, you either need to change the name of the taskdef from ragemage to bundleapp or change the bundleapp tag to ragemage...

I usually code with IDEs like Intellij Idea or Eclipse, but due to several reasons, I no longer have access to an IDE, and I'd like to be able to code in Java on a remote Linux machine through a ssh terminal.
Making simple progams with only a few classes is easy, but some of my projects have several libraries and several separate .java files. I also need to export to a .jar file.
For example, I have the following file organisation:

The java app consists of the a, b, and c .java files, uses libraries lib1 and lib2, and the file someconfig.conf needs to be inside the export jar.
I want to know how to easily compile and build a project such as this.
In other words, I just want to know how to export my project into a runnable jar the right way.
I expect this can be done with a few commands. If so, I plan to make a shell script to automate everything.

As suggested by other users you need to use a build management tool to do this like Ant, Maven etc. I have used Ant quiet frequently to do these kind of automated tasks. In order to install and Use Ant you can refer How To Install Apache Ant
After that the main task is to write your automation script and that is called a build xml in ant world. Here is a sample build.xml file you can refer to start with:

I'm trying to write an Ant build that does not require me adding Ant-plugins to Ant's lib directory, or /home/myuser/.ant/lib, or in my Eclipse instance's ant home, etc; namely because I will eventually be building my project on a hosted Jenkins server where I do not have access to the system's Ant installation.

When I run the taskdefs target, instead of seeing an echoed "Fizz is buzz!" message in my Ant output, I get the following error:

I normally create a single "boostrap" target and use this to install ivy into the "$HOME/.ant/lib" directory. See:

In conclusion, it's a shame ivy is not packaged by default with ANT. If you discover your hosted service prevents you from copying files into the home directory, then perhaps the simplest thing to do is ship a copy of the ivy jar alongside your source (and enable it using a taskdef)

It compiles ok with no warnings or errors, but when I try to run the .jar it says 'Could not find the main class: nat.rutherford.DesktopStarter. Program will now exit' =(
I have read a ton of pages on the matter but so far nothing conclusive.
I was able to compile it using Eclipse -> File -> Export ->Java -> Runnable Jar File. But I use some UTF-8 encoded .txt files that it seems not to be able to deal with that way and I need them! ie I have greek characters that should read...dσ/dΩ... but currently read... dÃ/d©... which isn't going to work ^^
So basically I need to make my Ant build work, baring in mind that it needs to be able to handle my UTF-8 encoded .txt files too.
The problem is in your task dist when you create your jar. If your compilation is right and there is no problem when you package your jar. Things that are wrong:

second you are not including your libraries in your jar, then when you try to execute your jar it doesn't work that why you are seeing the error message Could not find the main class: nat.rutherford.DesktopStarter. Program will now exit You could see that your libraries aren't within your jar using Winzip or similar. I suppose that you are seeing your problem when you try to execute the jar directly using windows or similar. A good way to see what is happening, seeing the problem printed in the console is executing your jar in the next way: java -jar MyProject-20120102.jar

Another thing that you need to modify the Class-path attribute in your manifest to include the libraries within your ${libs} folder.
It looks like you've added a manifest to your executable JAR that spells out nat.rutherford.DesktopStarter as your main class.
I'd recommend that you open the JAR and verify that the manifest.mf appears and does indeed say what your Ant build.xml does.
I'd also verify that your DesktopStarted.class appears in a folder path nat.rutherford. If it doesn't, the JVM won't find it.
Greeting, I'm trying to put some Beanshell script in my Ant build.xml file. I've followed the Ant manual as well as I can but I keep getting "Unable to create javax script engine for beanshell" when I run Ant. Here is the test target I wrote mostly from examples in the Ant manual:

Inside, you'll find jsr223/beanshell/build/bsh-engine.jar. Some searching implied that you need to download bsh-2.05b.jar. I found it here:

The more easily findable bsh-2.0b4.jar also seemed to work, but it printed a message that implied it was experimental.
Currently (2012) you need only 1 jar to fire the script task for BeanShell:

Previously I also thought of the following, as mentioned by Ant Manual, Library Dependencies chapter:

But it looks like bsf is not needed for bsh, at least in my environment.
Once the jar is given to ant, the script task runs smoothly. There are 2 possible scenarios for getting the jars and making them available to ant.
Manual download way
Download the jars above. I provided the links from maven repository. Once you have all the jars downloaded, make them available to ant. There are
at least 3 ways to do it:
Put it in java library path
Put it in ant library directory
Give the correct classpath to script task.
I find the last method the best, because it is most easily ported between
different systems. The ant file for the script task could look as follows:

Automatic download method, employing Ivy
The manual method is not perfect when you want to distribute your build script. Then you would like a way to make sure the jars are present in the destination system. For distributing builds there's no better tool than ivy. Ivy will download the jars and put them in classpath for you. The problem is that there appears another dependency, which is ivy itself. But providing ivy.jar is quite easy and that is the last dependency we need to supply explicitly.
One may ask why to provide ivy.jar, while we could simply download bsh.jar in the same way. The answer is flexibility. When you have the ivy.jar, you get any jar you wish with a single step being adding it to the ivy.xml file. And there is an agreed universal location for the ivy.jar file, while for other file we would have to think of a suitable directory.
Below comes the full example that downloads ivy and then all the necessary dependencies. Ivy download script is based on Installation chapter of Ivy reference.
Then a simple ivy.xml file is needed, which is given after the sample build.xml.
Original auto-download ivy script has a disadvantage of always checking the ivy url, even if ivy.jar is already in the expected location. This may be overriden by specifying -Doffline=true. I prefer to add another target to the build file and to do the http check only if we don't already have the ivy.jar. This is the way the script here works. To observe what ivy actually downloaded, set IVY_HOME environment variable to a directory of your choice. It will be created and filled with ivy stuff.

Don't use beanshell language. Use javascript instead, as it runs on jdk6 without any additional jars. Rebse told me that.
Javascript is also allowed to use java classes, for example java.lang.System.out.println()

Once all this is set up, simply launching the default target from Eclipse will compile, WAR, and deploy your solution.
The advantage of this approach is that it will work outside Eclipse as well as within Eclipse and can be used to easily share your deployment strategy (e.g. via source control) with other developers who are also working on your project.
I've always just selected Export from Eclipse. It builds the war file and includes all necessary files. Providing you created the project as a web project that's all you'll need to do. Eclipse makes it very simple to do.
We use Maven (Ant's big brother) for all our java projects, and it has a very nifty WAR plugin. Tutorials and usage can be found there.
It's a lot easier than Ant, fully compatible with Eclipse (use maven eclipse:eclipse to create Eclipse projects) and easy to configure.

A war file is simply a jar file with a war extension, but what makes it work is how the contents is actually structured.

If you create a new web project in Eclipse (I am referring to the Java EE version), the structure is created for you and you can also tell it where your Appserver is installed and it will deploy and start the application for you.
Using the "Export->WAR file" option will let you save the war file.
If you are not sure what to do and are starting from scratch then Maven can help get you started.
By following the the below steps you can get a new war project setup perfectly in eclipse.
Download and install Maven
Go the command line run: mvn archetype:generate
Follow the prompted steps - choosing the simple java web project (18) and a suitable name.
When it is finished run: mvn eclipse:eclipse
Start Eclipse. Choose File -> Import -> Existing project. Select the directory where you ran the mvn goals.
That's it you should now have a very good start to a war project in eclipse
You can create the war itself by running mvn package or deploy it by setting up a server in eclipse and simply adding adding the project to the server.
As some others have said the downside of using maven is that you have to use the maven conventions. But I think if you are just starting out, learning the conventions is a good idea before you start making your own. There's nothing to stop you changing/refactoring to your own preferred method at a later point.

Another option would be to build it automatically using Eclipse. Of course if you have continuous integration environment Ant or Maven is recommended. The export alternative is not very convenient because you have to configure every time the export properties.
STEPS:
Enable "Project Archives" support; this might depend on your project (I used it on Java EE/Web project). Right-click project root directory; Configure -> Add Project Archives Support.
Go and create a new archive in the "Project Archives" top dir. You have only jar option, but name you archive *.war.
Configure Fileset-s, i.e what files to be included. Typical is to configure two filesets similar how the Web Deployment Assembly (project property) is configured.
copy /WebContent to /
copy /build/classes to WEB-INF/classes (create this fileset after you define the WEB-INF/classes directory in the archive)
You might need to tweek the fileset exclude property depending where you placed some of the config files or you might need more filesets, but the idea is that once you configured this you don't need to change it.
Build the archive manually or publish directly to server; but is also automatically built for you by Eclipse

To build your war file in a web app:
In build.gradle, add:
apply plugin: 'war'
Then:
./gradlew war

2.Change the datasource.groovy file

3.kill the Java from Task Manager:
run clean comand in eclips
run 'prod war' fowllowed by project name.
Check the log file and find the same .war file in directory of workbench with same date.
