I have built a little daemon in Java and I would like to run it as a service under Unix (e.g. Debian 5). I have read that there is a possibility of using a Java wrapper, but isn't there any other option which is easier to implement? Can't I just use a Unix command such as xxx java -jar program.jar?
Well, if you want to run your java program even when you exit out of your shell, the following is the most simple way:
$nohup java -jar program.jar &
You need to create an appropriate script in /etc/init.d and link it to /etc/rcX.d directories. The script should support at least start, stop, and status parameters. During start it should run java command with appropriate arguments, probably via nohup java <arguments> &. Then you should save PID of your newly-started process to file /var/run/yourservice.pid. stop command should read this PID file and kill this service.
The details vary from distribution to distribution, most distributions provide some macros to make whole job easier. It's best to look at examples of other services in /etc/init.d for your distribution.
Additionally:
If your service isn't accessed from other computers from the network, but it opens some port, make it unavailable with firewall.
If your service processes some 'delicate' data, it's good to add another user and invoke an appropriate sudo command in your /etc/init.d file.
You can start it as:
java -jar program.jar
Unix daemons are normally started by init or started by a script in /etc/init.d or /etc/rc.d, and started at specific runlevels - normally by soft links in /etc/rcX.d. (where X is the intended "runlevel" which is normally 3.
I think debian are moving to using "upstart", a init-replacement. It uses config files in /etc/init to define jobs, and they are quite easy to write. Check that out.
Daemons traditionally closes stdin, sdtout and stderr, and does a "double fork" when starting, in order to detach from the session and also to signal that they are ready to handle whatever they should handle. This is not really necessary, as long as the daemon is not started from the terminal.
If you want a simple shell wrapper to start you program; you just need to write a small shell script:
#!/bin/sh
/full/path/to/java -jar /full/path/to/program.jar
... and make it executable (chmod 755 )

You can use a cron job to schedule your program. You can also check out this article for details on how to run scripts on startup. You can write a script that runs your java program and run it on startup as mentioned in the article.

I have a requirement where I need to develop application that reads TCP/IP Socket. I successfully made the program as Java program with No GUI means as soon as program runs it starts listening to the Socket and gets the response with the help of Netbeans IDE. Now as per my requirement i have to start execution of this program as soon as Linux system Booted.

Ideally you should create a service wrapper for your java application and then make this service run on startup example here.
Use
sudo update-rc.d mytestserv defaults to run your service wrapper on startup on Ubuntu
So two things you'll need to do:
First create a small shell script to start your java program from a terminal. As you have packaged as a jar have a look at this, specifically the JAR Files as Applications section.
This may be sufficient: (although you'll want to use the full path to Java)
#!/bin/bash
java -jar path_to_jar_file
You should be able to run your script and successfully start your program.
Once you've got it starting from a script you can use standard linux tools to start the script. Either putting it in /etc/rc.local, or as you're using Ubuntu, use update-rc.d to start it on boot. See here for a very simple example of using update-rc.d

In my company environment, there's this script that runs on plenty computers and that I occasionally ask the users to kill because it's known to lock up from time to time.
I was thinking of a way to kill it myself. I've noticed I can remotely list using pslist and then killing it using pskill.
Now the problem is, when somebody's running multiple java applications (ex. Eclipse, this application, another java.exe app,...) it becomes tricky to kill the correct application in the pslist, that would look something like this:
javaw 4214 .. ...
javaw 5000 .. ...
And so on. These are different applications, but they all run from javaw.exe. Is there a way of finding out the name of the .jar they are running, so I can kill the process based on that?
You can list java processes with
jps
or
jps -v
Jps is a tool provided with JDK and JRE, you'll find it in JDK_HOME/bin.
Option -v shows additional info (JVM start parameters)
You can use jps. It alone doesn't provide much helpful information to identify the java application. You need little bit extra details.
You can use the following options with jps to print the complete command line arguments passed to the java appliation (JVM arguments and main method arguments),
jps -lvm

I'm trying to find a way to run a jar file without being logged into the machine, and since it allows command shell, I was wondering if it's a good idea.

I'm trying to run Associated Press's Web Feeds Manager, which is basically a jar file that can be run when logged in by double clicking it.
I'd like to run the same file but without being logged in to the machine. In their manual (http://wfm.ap.org/admin/content/help/Running_Agent_on_a_Remote_Server.htm) they write how to do that, using a commandline parameter.
Basically I'd like the jar to run as a Windows service, regardless of who's logged in, but Googling it showed it was problematic.
Have you had experience with remotely running jar files? What are the pitfalls?

It mentions about open source Java Service Wrapper project from Tanukisoftware.org for accomplishing this task.
Note: I've not used this personally.
If you are not interested in having the service started/stopped at boot/shutdown, but you just want the program to be started manually and keep running after logout, here is what you do:
$ nohup java -jar foobar.jar > foobar.log 2>&1 &
which means: start my foobar.jar (java -jar) and keep it running after I logout (nohup) redirect stdout to foobar.log (>) and also the stderr (2>&1), and make it running in background (& at the end).
Instead, if you are interested in installing a "service" in your linux box, there are many options, depending on what distribution you are using.
The most common are upstart (for ubuntu) and System V init scripts (Redhat or others). Also cron can be used to start/stop services at startup/shutdown.
You can find an example of installing a java app (hudson) on an init system here, or doing the same thing with upstart. Or, as I said, cron could be an option.
On Windows, there is Java Service Wrapper. And not much more.
For windows Java Service Wrapper is a better choice
My favourite is the upstart on linux, but it is Ubuntu only.
On Windows I see many alternatives according to this forum.
I just found out that javaws -wait doesn't do what is supposed to do on Windows. It will return before the aplication finishes.
This bug is more than 5 years old and closed as won't fix
6281477, so we need a workaround.
I looking for a clean solution that will:
run unattended (no user intervention):
currently if JNLP file is not accessible, Java will display an error window.
if application fails for any reason we need a return code different from 0
It would be preferable to have a cross platform solution for this Java or Python but it would be acceptable even a Windows batch solution.
If you don't need your application to be booted from the web (which, from your question, I assume is the case), use javaw instead.
I believe it will give what you want.
I know this question is pretty old, but here is an alternative to javaws -wait: javaws will start a javaw process with com.sun.javaws.Main as main class.
The jcmd can come to the rescue:

One down side of this is to determine the actual java cmd: if multiple webstart application are ran, then the command will exit only if all application are down.
I have a Java program that I'd like to daemonize on a linux system. In other words, I want to start running it in a shell and have it continue running after I've logged out. I also want to be able to stop the program cleanly.
I found this article which uses a combination of shell scripting and Java code to do the trick. It looks good, but I'd like something simpler, if possible.
What's your preferred method to daemonize a Java program on a Linux system?
Apache Commons Daemon will run your Java program as Linux daemon or WinNT Service.
If you can't rely on Java Service Wrapper cited elsewhere (for instance, if you are running on Ubuntu, which has no packaged version of SW) you probably want to do it the old fashioned way: have your program write its PID in /var/run/$progname.pid, and write a standard SysV init script (use for instance the one for ntpd as an example, it's simple) around it. Preferably, make it LSB-compliant, too.
Essentially, the start function tests if the program is already running (by testing if /var/run/$progname.pid exists, and the contents of that file is the PID of a running process), and if not run
logfile=/var/log/$progname.log
pidfile=/var/run/$progname.pid
nohup java -Dpidfile=$pidfile $jopts $mainClass </dev/null > $logfile 2>&1
The stop function checks on /var/run/$progname.pid, tests if that file is the PID of a running process, verifies that it is a Java VM (so as not to kill a process that simply reused the PID from a dead instance of my Java daemon) and then kills that process.
When called, my main() method will start by writing its PID in the file defined in System.getProperty("pidfile").
One major hurdle, though: in Java, there is no simple and standard way to get the PID of the process the JVM runs in.
Here is what I have come up with:

I frequently find myself writing scripts or command lines which essentially look like this, if I want to:
Run a program that is immune to sighups
That is completely disconnected from the shell which spawns it, and
Produces a log file from stderr and stdout the contents of which are displayed as well, but
Allows me to stop viewing the log in progress and do other stuff without disrupting the running process

I prefer the nohup command. The blog post says there are better ways, but I don't think they're enough better.
You could try Java Service Wrapper, the community edition is free and meets your needs.
My preferred way on Ubuntu is to use the libslack 'daemon' utility. This is what Jenkins uses on Ubuntu (which is where I got the idea.) I've used it for my Jetty-based server applications and it works well.
When you stop the daemon process it will signal the JVM to shutdown. You can execute shutdown/cleanup code at this point by registering a shutdown hook with Runtime.addShutdownHook().
That depends. If it's just a one-time thing, I want to daemonize it and then go home, but usually I wait for the results, I might do:
nohup java com.me.MyProgram &
at the command line. To kill it cleanly, you have a lot of options. You might have a listener for SIGKILL, or listen on a port and shutdown when a connection is made, periodically check a file. Difference approaches have different weaknesses. If it's for use in production, I'd give it more thought, and probably throw a script into /etc/init.d that nohups it, and have a more sophisticated shutdown, such as what tomcat has.

Create a new script named run inside /service/vm/ folder and add the below lines.

replace the Jar with your own Jar file. or any java class file.
Reboot the system
svstat /service/vm should be up and running now !.
svc -d /service/vm should bring vm down now !.
svc -u /service/vm should bring vm up now !.
