When I prompt the user to guess a number and the number is incorrect, I want to be able to flush immediately flush the input stream and enter another guess on the same line.
For example:
Guess a number between 0 and 5: I enter my guesses here on this one line only.
I could take the print out of the loop but in that case, if I enter an inccorect number, the cursor jumps to the next line.

If your goal is only to clear the console, then you could do:
Runtime.getRuntime().exec("cls");
Or if you are on Linux or OS X:
Runtime.getRuntime().exec("clear");
Now if you add previous line that you wanted to keep, you will need to keep then in an Array and reprint after each clear.
This won't work in IDE's.
If you want a more system-independent way, there is a library named JLine (GitHub), which is designed for a better console usage. It actually contains a method clearScreen.
You could also do:
System.out.print("\033[H\033[2J");
This will clear the screen and return the cursor to the first row.

i am having trouble passing the value of "guess" into my main method. The
method that is trying to return guess just shows up as zero in the main.I have tried various things such as void methods and different returns but the guess value does not get updated in the while loop of the main even though, from what i am seeing, it should be getting updated from the method and passing it down to the guesses right below it.

Just wrap your entire code (except for the scanner initialization) in a while loop that is always true. That way, when one game ends, it will start a new one. Then, instead of breaking your game's while loop when the user enters a -1, just use System.exit(0), which will end your program with a status code of 0, indicating that the program executed successfully.

Wrap your code in a while (true) this will keep on running your code for ever and ever. Make sure you are also updating your random a after every game and your count. Then from there just check if guess is ever -1 and return when it is. When you call return it will end the method which ends your game.

move your end game condition in the while condition like this while(guess != -1)
move the welcome greetings inside the loop
move the thank you greeting after the game loop is done
reset count and a when the user won a game in order to start fresh
reset guess on every iteration
Now even if the player guesses the number, the loop does not end and the game loop can be stopped only intentionally (by entering -1 = current break condition):

Another solution is to use two nested loops, but IMO for this case loop in a loop is too much and makes the source unnecessary complex.

In your main use a while loop. In the loop first call your guessGame() then, similarly to how you ask to enter a number, you ask if they want to play again (Y/N ?) and if they say no you break the loop otherwise you go ahead...

i'm currently trying to create a while loop for my program, a Guessing game. I've set it up so the user can create a max value i.e 1-500 and then the user can proceed to guess the number. "Warmer" and "colder" tend to suggest a proximity to the correct answer, as opposed to the direction in which that correct answer lies.
