Timestamp string to timestamp in java - java

I have the following string "2015-04-02 11:52:00+02" and I need to parse it in Java to a Timestamp.
I tried all sorts of formats including
SimpleDateFormat mdyFormat = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss+Z");
but nothing seems to work - I keep getting a ParseException
Can anyone help?
I need something like:
SimpleDateFormat mdyFormat = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss+Z");
Timestamp t = new Timestamp(mdyFormat.parse("2015-04-02 11:52:00+02").getTime());

java.sql.Timestamp objects don't have time zones - they are instants in time, like java.util.Date
So try this:
SimpleDateFormat mdyFormat = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss");
Timestamp t = new Timestamp(mdyFormat.parse("2015-04-02 11:52:00").getTime());

try "yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ssX"
Z stand for timezone in the following format: +0800
X stand for timezone in the following format: +08

ISO 8601
Replace that SPACE in the middle with a T and you have a valid standard (ISO 8601) string format that can be parsed directly by either the Joda-Time library or the new java.time package built into Java 8 (inspired by Joda-Time). Search StackOverflow for hundreds of examples.

Java, unparsable date error, converting from String to Date

I have this String "2019-10-17T16:00:00+02:00" and I want to convert this String to a Date object, because I want to change the format. I tried this:
SimpleDateFormat sd1 = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy-MM-dd'T'HH:mm:ssZ");
Date dt = sd1.parse(mystring);
SimpleDateFormat sd2 = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy-MM-dd");
String newDate = sd2.format(dt);
System.out.println(newDate);
But I have this message: Unparseable date: "2019-10-17T16:00:00+02:00"
What can I do?

Please consider using the modern date and time API java.time.
You can easily parse and format dates, times and date times using it.
See this example:

The output is this:
2019/10/17 16:00:00 +0200
That formatter is used be default, so no need to specify. The standard ISO 8601 formats are used by default in java.time.
OffsetDateTime.parse( "2019-10-17T16:00:00+02:00" ) // ISO 8601 formats can be parsed directly, without specifying a `DateTimeFormatter` object.
If you just want to extract the date part of a date time, then you can do that, too by just applying two additional lines of code:
LocalDate date = odt.toLocalDate();
System.out.println(date.format(DateTimeFormatter.ISO_DATE));
The pattern letter for ISO 8601 time zones is X not Z as others have noted.
Use:
SimpleDateFormat sd1 = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy-MM-dd'T'HH:mm:ssX");
And parsing will succeed.

Format String yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm:ss +timezone into DateTime

I need to format a String that looks like this:
"2018-07-20 18:53:46.598000 +02:00:00"
into a DateTime object like this:
20/07/2018 (HH with Timezone applied):53:46
My approach has been:

Generally you need two formatters for converting a date or date-time from one format to another: one that specifies the format to convert from and one that specifies the format to convert to.

A date-time object doesn’t have a format, so in that respect cannot be “like this”. dateTimeWithTimeZoneApplied in the above snippet is in the specified time zone, so has the hours adjusted. After converting to this time zone I have formatted into a string in the format you mentioned, in case you wanted this (I didn’t find it clear).
I am using and recommending java.time, the modern Java date and time API. The date and time classes you were using, Date and SimpleDateFormat, are long outdated and poorly designed, it’s not worth struggling with them. Also SimpleDateFormat supports only milliseconds so can only work correctly with exactly 3 decimals on the seconds, not with the 6 decimals you have got.

The above code will give you current Timestamp.Timestamp will provide better feasibilty

Java SimpleDateFormat parse Timezone like America/Los_Angeles

I want to parse the following string in Java and convert it to a date:
DTSTART;TZID=America/Los_Angeles:20140423T120000
I tried this:
SimpleDateFormat sdf = new SimpleDateFormat("'DTSTART;TZID='Z':'yyyyMMdd'T'hhmmss");
Date start = sdf.parse("DTSTART;TZID=America/Los_Angeles:20140423T120000");
And this:
SimpleDateFormat sdf = new SimpleDateFormat("'DTSTART;TZID='z':'yyyyMMdd'T'hhmmss");
Date start = sdf.parse("DTSTART;TZID=America/Los_Angeles:20140423T120000");
But it still doesn't work. I think the problem is in America/Los_Angeles.

Try this one using TimeZone.
Note: You have to split your date string before doing this operation.

In SimpleDateFormat pattern Z represent RFC 822 4-digit time zone

My assumption was wrong,
22.09.1985 00:00UTC is actually 22.09.1985 02:00CET
so

is exactly what i wanted, the date i compared it with was wrong.
Avoid java.util.Date & Calendar
You’ve found one of the many reasons to avoid using java.util.Date & .Calendar. They are notoriously troublesome. Either use Joda-Time or, in Java 8, the new java.time package which is inspired by Joda-Time and defined by JSR 310.
Search StackOverflow for "joda date" to find many examples.
Time Zone
You said:
my timezone is GMT+1.
Incorrect, your local offset from UTC/GMT is +01. That is not your time zone. A time zone is an offset plus rules about Daylight Saving Time (DST) and other anomalies.
And that offset should have two digits: +01 (or +01:00) rather than +1, according to the ISO 8601 standard.
Avoid the 3 or 4 letter codes such as CET. They are neither standardized nor unique. Use proper time zone names.
Generally speaking, you should specify a time zone in all your date-time work rather than rely on the current JVM's default.
In both Joda-Time and java.time, a date-time object truly knows its assigned time zone. A java.util.Date has no time zone, but seems to because its toString applies the default time zone when creating a String representation, as you sadly learned the hard way.

The fact that you're parsing a date string, using a specific time zone, doesn't make the printed Date object to use that time zone. You're still using the same implementation of Date#toString(), which formats the Date object using the default timezone.
What you would need is to format your Date object with that SimpleDateFormat object. And if you have that specific string, then you would need another SimpleDateFormat object for parsing that string:
String dateString = "22/09/1985";
SimpleDateFormat parser = new SimpleDateFormat("dd/MM/yyyy");
Date parsedDate = parser.parse(dateString);

Java Date doesn't have the concept of TimeZone associated with it. You can only format a Date object using a specified timezone, and get a string. Or else, switch to JodaTime library.
Date is a relatively "dumb" class, as it just represents the number of milliseconds since 1970-01-01 00:00:00 UTC.
If you want to print out a Date as if it were a different timezone, you need to construct a DateFormat / SimpleDateFormat for that TimeZone and format it to a String that way.

The format is wrong. Use this instead:
"yyyy-dd-MM HH:mm:ss"
Indeed your last program version is ok, except you don't need to declare the SimpleDateFormat twice. Simply:
DateFormat dateFormat = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss");
String string = "2013-06-09 14:20:00";

and the DATE object format is "yyyy-dd-MM HH:mm:ss"
You can get Date,Day,month and many more by using Date object which is present in
java.util.Date package , like as follows.
Date d = new Date(string);
This will call constructor of Date object for which you are passing 'string' variable which contains date.
d.getDay(); // retrieve day on that particular day
d.getDate(); // retrieve Date
and many more are avaiable like this.

Don't Use java.util.Date!
Avoid using java.util.Date & Calendar classes bundled with Java. They are notoriously bad in both design and implementation.
Instead use a competent date-time library. In Java that means either:
The third-party open-source Joda-Time
In the forthcoming Java 8, the new java.time.* classes defined by JSR 310 and inspired by Joda-Time.
Time Zone
Your question and code fail to address the issue of time zones. If you ignore time zones, you'll get defaults. That may cause unexpected behaviors when deployed in production. Better practice is to always specify a time zone.
Formatter
If you replace a space with a 'T' per the standard ISO 8601 format, then you can conveniently feed that string directly to a constructor of a Joda-Time DateTime instance.
If you must use that string as-is, then define a formatter to specify that format. You can find many examples of that here on StackOverflow.com.
