I am having problem with my getGPA() method it will only return a 0.00 value. I need for the function to calculate the GPA by dividing totalgradepoints by numberofclasses. I've tried everything and have no idea what the problem is. I am a complete beginner and trying to learn as I go this is for a class assignment so this is what we were instructed by our professor. I appreciate any advice on this thank you everyone.
import java.util.Scanner;
import java.text.DecimalFormat;
public class StudentGPAInfo {
static DecimalFormat f = new DecimalFormat ("0.00");
private double gpa;
private int totalgradepoints;
private int numberofclasses;
private String studentname;
public StudentGPAInfo() {
gpa = 0;
totalgradepoints = 0;
numberofclasses = 0;
studentname = null;
}
public void setName(String studentID){
studentname = studentID;
}
public void addClass(int classes, String gradepoint){
numberofclasses = numberofclasses += classes;
if (gradepoint.equalsIgnoreCase("A")) {
totalgradepoints += 4;
} else if (gradepoint.equalsIgnoreCase("B")) {
totalgradepoints += 3;
} else if (gradepoint.equalsIgnoreCase("C")) {
totalgradepoints += 2;
} else if (gradepoint.equalsIgnoreCase("D")) {
totalgradepoints += 1;
} else if (!gradepoint.equalsIgnoreCase("F")) {
System.err.println("Invalid input: " + gradepoint);
}
}
public String getName(){
return studentname;
}
public double getGPA(){
gpa = totalgradepoints / numberofclasses;
return gpa;
}
public void displayStudent(){
System.out.println("Student Name: " + studentname);
System.out.println("Total Grade Points: " + totalgradepoints);
System.out.println("Number of Class Credits: " + numberofclasses);
System.out.println(studentname + " Your GPA Average is: " + f.format(gpa));
}
}
public class GPAtest {
static Scanner input = new Scanner (System.in);
public static void main(String[] args) {
String sName;
String grade;
int sClass;
String aClass;
StudentGPAInfo student = new StudentGPAInfo();
System.out.print("Please Enter Student Name: ");
sName = input.nextLine();
student.setName(sName);
do {
System.out.print("Please Enter Class credits: ");
sClass = Integer.parseInt(input.nextLine());
System.out.print("Please Enter Letter Grade: ");
grade = input.nextLine();
System.out.print("Another Class? ");
aClass = input.nextLine();
student.addClass(sClass, grade);
}
while (aClass.equalsIgnoreCase("y"));
student.displayStudent();
}
}
Please read how integer division works. if the numerator is less than the denominator, the result is zero. Make the numerator a double by casting.
Change this:
gpa = totalgradepoints / numberofclasses;
to this:
gpa = (double) totalgradepoints / numberofclasses;

When I run the program and and put in a couple mortgages and then end the program it prints out the entire array of objects, mortgageArray[], but for some reason it is only printing out the last mortgage you entered. Not sure why can anybody help me out? I think the problem may lie when instantiating the objects into the array.

The problem is with your loop at the end
for(int j = 0; j < 10; j++){
if(mortgageArray[j] != null){
System.out.println(mortgageArray[1].toString() + "\n");
}
}
It always prints the element at index 1.
Should be
System.out.println(mortgageArray[j].toString() + "\n");
All your fields in the class Mortgage are static.
To fix this, simply remove the static keyword:
private int loanAmount;
private int term;
private double interestRate;
private String accountNum;
private String lastName;
private double monthlyPayment;
private double totalPayment;
Static fields don't belong to an instance, but to the class that gets instantiated. So everytime you call one of your getter-methods, the previous value (of all your instances) will be overriden.
If you are not familiar with classes and objects in Java, this tutorial might be helpfull for you: Understanding Class Members
I am trying to allow the user to submit their test scores then get the total scores and the average score. I have a separate class called student to help simplify some tasks.
This is the Student Class:
public class Student {
private String name;
private int numOfQuizzes;
private double totalScore;
public Student(String name){
this.name = name;
}
public String getName() {
return name;
}public void addQuiz(int score){
numOfQuizzes++;
totalScore += score;
}public double getTotalScore() {
return totalScore;
}
public double getAverageScore(){
return totalScore/(double)numOfQuizzes;
}
}
Then this is my main class so far.
ArrayList<String> scores = new ArrayList<String>();
Scanner nameInput = new Scanner(System.in);
System.out.print("What is your name? ");
String name = nameInput.next();
Scanner scoreInput = new Scanner(System.in);
while (true) {
System.out.print("Please enter your scores (q to quit): ");
String q = scoreInput.nextLine();
scores.add(q);
if (q.equals("q")) {
scores.remove("q");
Student student = new Student(name);
System.out.println("Students Name: " + student.getName());
System.out.println("Total Quiz Scores: " + student.getTotalScore());
System.out.println("Average Quiz Score: " + student.getAverageScore());
break;
}
}
}
}
This is the current output.
What is your name? tom
Please enter your scores (q to quit): 13
Please enter your scores (q to quit): 12
Please enter your scores (q to quit): 5
Please enter your scores (q to quit): q
Students Name: tom
Total Quiz Scores: 0.0
Average Quiz Score: NaN
When you read in your values, you need to check whether it's a string or an int, you only want to add integers. You might do something like:
try{
do{
String q = scoreInput.nextLine();
if(q.equals("q"){
//Do something, like break
break;
}
int numVal = Integer.valueOf(q);
scores.addQuiz(numVal);
} catch (Exception e){
//Handle error of converting string to int
}
}while(true);
//Once you have all the scores, be sure to call your averageScore method
averageScore();
Once you have the scores, your average score method should be something like:
public double averageScore(){
if(scores != null){
for(int score : scores){
totalScore += score;
}
return totalScore/scores.size();
}
Your Student class might look like this:
public class Student {
private String name;
private int numOfQuizzes;
private double totalScore;
private ArrayList<Integer> scores;
public Student(String name){
this.name = name;
scores = new ArrayList<Integer>();
}
public String getName() {
return name;
}public void addQuiz(int score){
scores.add(score);
}
public double getTotalScore() {
for(int score : scores){
totalScore += score;
}
return totalScore;
}
public double averageScore(){
if(scores != null){
for(int score : scores){
totalScore += score;
}
return totalScore/scores.size();
}
}
I was having some trouble with a program where I am suppose to allow a user to enter any amount of numbers into a program until they do not want to anymore. The program then should calculate the average and maximum of the numbers inputed. Where did I go wrong?

}

{

return sum;
}

{

}

{

if(newValue >= max)
{

}

}

{

}
}

Each time I run this code it gets to where it asks for student id and it prints out the student id part and the homework part. Why? I am trying to do get a string for name, id, homework, lab, exam, discussion, and project then in another class I am splitting the homework, lab, and exam strings into arrays then parsing those arrays into doubles. After I parse them I total them in another method and add the totals with project and discussion to get a total score.

At the end of the switch, you have
while ( test = true)
You probably want to change that to
while ( test == true)
Also, take these lines out of the loop:
Scanner keyboard = new Scanner(System.in);
PrintWriter outputFile = new PrintWriter("gradeReport.txt");
In addition to Ermir's answer, this line won't capture all the grades:
System.out.println("Please enter the 10 homework grades seperated by a space: ");
String homework = keyboard.next();
Keyboard.next only reads until the next delimiter token, so if you want to capture 10 grades separated by spaces you need capture the whole line, like:
System.out.println("Please enter the 10 homework grades separated by a space: ");
String homework = keyboard.nextLine();
I'm stuck. This is what I have written so far, but I don't know how to set up for a method call to prompt for the total. I need the individual totals for all items in the array to be added to get a total cost and it needs to be displayed at the end of the program. Please, any advice is helpful. I have to be to work soon and need to turn it in before I go. Thanks

In your for loop you need to multiply the units * price. That gives you the total for that particular item. Also in the for loop you should add that to a counter that keeps track of the grand total. Your code would look something like
float total;
total += theItem.getUnits() * theItem.getPrice();
total should be scoped so it's accessible from within main unless you want to pass it around between function calls. Then you can either just print out the total or create a method that prints it out for you.
The total of 7 numbers in an array can be created as:
import java.util.*;
class Sum
{
public static void main(String arg[])
{
int a[]=new int[7];
int total=0;
Scanner n=new Scanner(System.in);
System.out.println("Enter the no. for total");
for(int i=0;i<=6;i++)
{
a[i]=n.nextInt();
total=total+a[i];
}
System.out.println("The total is :"+total);
}
}
