on this line:
getActionBar().setDisplayHomeAsUpEnabled(true);
please help me to solve this problem.
Avoid Activity use AppcompatActivity or ActionBarActivity instead of Activity .
follow here may be your problem can fix .
getActionBar().setDisplayHomeAsUpEnabled(true); throws NullPointerException on new activity creation (Google - Basic Tutorial)
getActionBar().setDisplayHomeAsUpEnabled(true) throws NullPointerException

Make sure you have referenced
public class MainActivity extends ActionBarActivity {
...
}
and change
ActionBar bar = getActionBar();
to
ActionBar bar =getActivity().getSupportActionBar();
Reference
http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/ui/actionbar.html
First change your class extension
public class MainActivity extends AppCompatActivity{
And then get your support action bar adding the following code to the 'onCreateView' method
assert getSupportActionBar() != null;
getSupportActionBar().setDisplayHomeAsUpEnabled(true);
I am trying to build a Translucent Navigation bar for my android app. I separately tried developing the task bar and then had intend to include it in my application.
I am not allowed to upload images yet (as I don't have the reputation), therefore here's an example of what I am trying to build for my APP:

Please help!!
Don't know what you declared in manifest and menu file. However please check whether you declared this.
in manifest file:
<application
android:theme="#style/Theme.AppCompat">
in menu file:
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto
Check whether you mentioned this.
You are getting a class not found exception , this could be due to not building the app, try building the project and if still exist clean and build again.
I guess you haven't added MainActivity in your AndroidManifest.xml
Add below code inside <application> tag
<activity
android:name="info.androidhive.slidingmenu.MainActivity"
android:label="#string/app_name" >
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />
<category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>
I have the following BaseActivity that I extend from all other activities of my application in order to have a shared menu, actionbar, drawer etc.
Drawer works fine, but the Menu doesn't show up on the Action bar.
Please note that the onCreateOptionsMenu is correctly called as I can see the XXX Log.e output, but The menu is not shown. I also tried copying the onCreateOptionsMenu into the MainActivity that extends my BaseActivity but still no luck.
Below is my code

And here is my Menu main.xml
<menu xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">

android:icon="#drawable/ic_drawer"
android:title="TEST"/>
<item android:id="#+id/action_compose"
android:icon="#drawable/ic_drawer"
android:title="TEST" />
</menu>
Try to add app name-space like this:
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
And when add showAsAction property for every your item like this:
app:showAsAction="always"
Result main.xml:
<menu xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto">
<item android:id="#+id/action_search"
android:icon="#drawable/ic_drawer"

app:showAsAction="always"/>
<item android:id="#+id/action_compose"
android:icon="#drawable/ic_drawer"
android:title="TEST"
app:showAsAction="always"/>
</menu>
I want to get rid of the drawer icon. It's called ic_drawer in my project. And when I go to my MainActivity.java and remove R.drawable.ic_drawer, //nav menu toggle icon
I get something that looks like this.

ActionBarDrawerToggle constructor is expecting another argument.You are passing only 4 arguments. If you want to get rid of that drawer icon pass a transparent image.
mDrawerToggle = new ActionBarDrawerToggle(this, mDrawerLayout,
R.drawable.transparent_image, //transparent image
R.string.app_name, // nav drawer open - description for accessibility
R.string.app_name // nav drawer close - description for accessibility
)
You have wrong number of parameters. Provide additional one.
R.id.transparent_image for instance.
