Spring default profile properties - java

I have next issue.
I'm using following configuration:
<bean class="org.springframework.beans.factory.config.PropertyPlaceholderConfigurer">
<property name="locations">
<list>
<value>classpath:config/main.properties</value>
<value>classpath:config/application-${spring.profiles.active}.properties</value>
</list>
</property>
<property name="ignoreUnresolvablePlaceholders" value="true"/>
<property name="ignoreResourceNotFound" value="true"/>
<property name="searchSystemEnvironment" value="true"/>
<property name="systemPropertiesModeName" value="SYSTEM_PROPERTIES_MODE_OVERRIDE"/>
</bean>
And it works perfectly if I use -Dspring.profiles.active argument. But if I do not use this argument and rely on
<context-param>
<param-name>spring.profiles.active</param-name>
<param-value>dev</param-value>
</context-param>
then I get next exception:
org.springframework.beans.factory.BeanDefinitionStoreException: Invalid bean definition with name 'org.springframework.beans.factory.config.PropertyPlaceholderConfigurer#0' defined in URL [file:/Users/mlinkov/Projects/target/WEB-INF/classes/main-context.xml]: Could not resolve placeholder 'spring.profiles.active' in string value "classpath:config/application-${spring.profiles.active}.properties"; nested exception is java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Could not resolve placeholder 'spring.profiles.active' in string value "classpath:config/application-${spring.profiles.active}.properties"

despite I see following in logs
INFO PropertiesLoaderSupport.java 2015-09-16 20:58:47,730: Loading properties file from class path resource [config/main.properties]
INFO PropertiesLoaderSupport.java 2015-09-16 20:58:47,731: Loading properties file from class path resource [config/application-dev.properties]
As I understand it happens because web.xml context-param is not system variable. Is there way to specify profile properties file by using default value rather than -Dspring.profiles.active variable?

I suppose I have found out why I get exception.
PropertyPlaceholderConfigurer is used for setting placeholders from property file and system variables. If I explicitly define system.profiles.active variable through startup arguments, spring register this variable as system, otherwise, I mean getting variable from web.xml context-property, it does not become system variable so we get exception when PropertyPlaceholderConfigurer tries to get placeholder by system.profiles.active.
I hope it will help someone

In non-DEV environments your rely on spring.profiles.active explicitly defined. So I would suggest avoiding default configuration to DEV, because it create difference against non-DEV environments and you want to be as close to PROD as possible in your configs.
Also change the name of placeholder string (e.g. to environment.type), because spring.profiles.active can change behavior of you application by enabling/disabling #Profile annotated beans. Again you want to minimize such differences between environments as much as possible.

The missing class is located in spring-jdbc. You obviously does not have this dependency in your pom.xml.
Add the version that corresponds to the spring version you are using to dependencies section:
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-jdbc</artifactId>
<version>x.y.z</version>
</dependency>

NPE when declaring new query method in CrudRepository

I am implementing a feature that returns top record from the database in an existing application used in weather monitoring. I am using Spring, Hibernate, Spring Data JPA.
Spring version is 4.1.1 RELEASE. Here's the minimal example:
Reading entity:
#Entity
public class Reading {
#Id
#GeneratedValue
private Long id;
private Date time;
private double temperature;
//getters, setters
}
ReadingController:
#Controller
#RequestMapping("/reading")
public class ReadingController {
#Autowired
private ReadingDao readingDao;
//controller logic
}
The DAO I am using:
public interface ReadingDao extends CrudRepository<Reading, Long>{
Reading findTopByOrderByTemperatureDesc();
//other methods
}
I have also configured Spring to look for components in the mvc-dispatcher-servlet.xml file:
<context:component-scan base-package="org.mycompany"/>
<mvc:annotation-driven/>
The problem: adding the findTopByOrderByTemperatureDesc() method to the ReadingDao causes a NullPointerException while autowiring the ReadingDao in ReadingController.
According to the Spring Data JPA documentation (chapter 3.4.5) the method should work.
Also, the name of the method seems to be correct (see here). I tried with findTopOrderByTemperatureDesc, and findTopByTemperatureDesc, but got No property desc found for type double.
Stacktrace:

Note that the application is working properly when that method is not declared, and there are no problems during autowiring.
How to solve this problem? Or how to implement the same feature in some other way?
EDIT: I also have
<jpa:repositories base-package="org.mycompany.dao"/>
<bean id="transactionManager" class="org.springframework.orm.jpa.JpaTransactionManager">
<property name="entityManagerFactory" ref="entityManagerFactory" />
</bean>
in Datasource.xml file that configures the database and repositories.
EDIT2: I also changed double to Double as suggested, but that did not change anything.
<jpa:repositories base-package="com.company.product.repository" entity-manager-factory-ref="entityManagerFactory" transaction-manager-ref="transactionManager" />
Or
#EnableJpaRepositories(basePackages = "com.company.product.repository", entityManagerFactoryRef = "entityManager", transactionManagerRef = "transactionManager")
You must configure the jpa repositories, and this package should contain all your repo classes. In your case the ReadingDao should be placed in the repo package example (com.company.product.repository)
<context:component-scan base-package="org.mycompany"/>
<jpa:repositories base-package="com.company.product.repository" entity-manager-factory-ref="entityManagerFactory" transaction-manager-ref="transactionManager" />
<mvc:annotation-driven/>

org.hibernate.HibernateException: No TransactionManagerLookup specified

I am having this exception "org.hibernate.HibernateException: No TransactionManagerLookup specified". I had a ejb module project which is deployed on Glassfish Server. I am very confused with this exception since I think i had configured all the necessary configurations on my hibernate.cfg.xml. Here is my Hibernate.cfg.xml
<!-- DataSource properties (begin) -->
<property name="hibernate.connection.datasource">testdb</property>
<!-- JTA transaction properties (begin) -->

Why does loading log4j2.xml via Spring throw a NoClassDefFoundError for a log4j1 class?

I'm deploying a Spring 4 web application to Tomcat 8 and am trying to load the log4j configuration (log4j2.xml) via Spring so that it can be stored outside of the WAR. With this configuration in place, Spring throws a NoClassDefFoundError for a log4j1 class (org.apache.log4j.xml.DOMConfigurator) during deployment. Log4j2 however is loaded correctly if it's on the classpath. I do not have logj1 libraries explicitly in my dependencies, only log4j2.
Initializing Log4J with Spring? proposes configuring log4j in web.xml. I tried this, but log4j is not loaded at all and no logging statements are printed from the application.
Correctly using Log4jConfigurer in Spring proposes configuring a custom log4j config filename in Tomcat, but is not quite what I'm after. I need the file to be loaded from outside a WAR, given a filename.
Spring configuration loading log4j2.xml:
<!-- Load Log4j config file via Spring -->
<bean id="log4jInitialization" class="org.springframework.beans.factory.config.MethodInvokingFactoryBean">
<property name="targetClass" value="org.springframework.util.Log4jConfigurer"/>
<property name="targetMethod" value="initLogging"/>
<property name="arguments">
<list>
<value>${log4j.config.location}</value>
<value>${log4j.refresh.interval}</value>
</list>
</property>
</bean>

EDIT: The Log4jConfigurer doesn't work with log4j2 since it depends on the (log4j1-only) DOMConfigurator class. Please remove it from your spring config.
Instead, use the mechanism log4j2 provides to control the config file location: system property "log4j.configurationFile", or alternatively see the Web Applications log4j2 manual page.
