NullPointerException on calling getter method [duplicate] - java

This question already has answers here:
What is a NullPointerException, and how do I fix it?

Closed 1 year ago.
I have three classes TestGUI , MainFrame and ReportsJPanel.
MainFrame object is passed as parameter in ReportsJPanel constructor. When I try to call getter method of MainFrame object that was passed and get the value of private variable, from ReportsJPanel object I get the NullPointerException error. Error happens on this line in ReportsJPanel instalationLocation=mainFrame.getInstalationLocation();
Code for TestGUI:
package testgui;
public class TestGUI {
public static void main(String[] args) {
try {
for (javax.swing.UIManager.LookAndFeelInfo info : javax.swing.UIManager.getInstalledLookAndFeels()) {
if ("Nimbus".equals(info.getName())) {
javax.swing.UIManager.setLookAndFeel(info.getClassName());
break;
}
}
} catch (ClassNotFoundException ex) {
java.util.logging.Logger.getLogger(RiskManagerGUI.class.getName()).log(java.util.logging.Level.SEVERE, null, ex);
} catch (InstantiationException ex) {
java.util.logging.Logger.getLogger(RiskManagerGUI.class.getName()).log(java.util.logging.Level.SEVERE, null, ex);
} catch (IllegalAccessException ex) {
java.util.logging.Logger.getLogger(RiskManagerGUI.class.getName()).log(java.util.logging.Level.SEVERE, null, ex);
} catch (javax.swing.UnsupportedLookAndFeelException ex) {
java.util.logging.Logger.getLogger(RiskManagerGUI.class.getName()).log(java.util.logging.Level.SEVERE, null, ex);
}
java.awt.EventQueue.invokeLater(new Runnable() {
public void run() {
MainFrame mainFrame = new MainFrame();
mainFrame.initComponents();
mainFrame.setVisible(true);
}
});
}
}
Code for MainFrame:
package testgui;
import java.awt.*;
import javax.swing.*;
import javax.swing.border.*;
import left_panel_package.ReportsJPanel;
public class MainFrame extends JFrame{
private String instalationLocation;
public MainFrame(){
setInstalationLocation("TEST_Location");
}
public void initComponents() {
setDefaultCloseOperation(javax.swing.WindowConstants.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
setTitle("TEST");
JPanel mainPanel = new JPanel();
mainPanel.setLayout(new BorderLayout());
mainPanel.setBackground(new Color(0, 0, 0));
JPanel leftPanel = new JPanel();
leftPanel.setBackground(new Color(255, 0, 0));
leftPanel.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(200,100));
leftPanel.setLayout(new GridLayout(3,0));
JPanel rightPanel = new JPanel();
rightPanel.setBackground(new Color(0, 255, 0));
rightPanel.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(200,100));
JPanel centerPanel = new JPanel();
centerPanel.setBackground(new Color(0, 0, 255));
JPanel toolBar = new JPanel();
toolBar.setBackground(new Color(0, 255, 255));
toolBar.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(100,100));
ReportsJPanel reportsPanel = new ReportsJPanel(this);
reportsPanel.initComponents();
leftPanel.add(reportsPanel);
mainPanel.add(leftPanel, BorderLayout.WEST);
mainPanel.add(rightPanel, BorderLayout.EAST);
mainPanel.add(centerPanel, BorderLayout.CENTER);
mainPanel.add(toolBar, BorderLayout.NORTH);
setContentPane(mainPanel);
GraphicsDevice gd = GraphicsEnvironment.getLocalGraphicsEnvironment().getDefaultScreenDevice();
int width = gd.getDisplayMode().getWidth();
int height = gd.getDisplayMode().getHeight();
setSize(width, height);
setLocationRelativeTo(null);
}
public String getInstalationLocation() {
return instalationLocation;
}
private void setInstalationLocation(String instalationLocation) {
this.instalationLocation = instalationLocation;
}
}
Code for ReportsJPanel:
import javax.swing.JPanel;
import javax.swing.border.TitledBorder;
import testgui.MainFrame;
public class ReportsJPanel extends JPanel{
private MainFrame mainFrame;
private String instalationLocation;
public ReportsJPanel (MainFrame mainframe){
this.mainFrame=mainFrame;
setBorder(new TitledBorder("Reports"));
}
public void initComponents(){
instalationLocation=mainFrame.getInstalationLocation();
}
}

Simple typo. In your constructor for your ReportsJPanel you have this.
public ReportsJPanel(MainFrame mainframe) {
this.mainFrame = mainFrame;
setBorder(new TitledBorder("Reports"));
}
You need to capitalize the f in the MainFrame object that you pass to the constructor.
public ReportsJPanel(MainFrame mainFrame) {
this.mainFrame = mainFrame;
setBorder(new TitledBorder("Reports"));
}
Otherwise, you will be setting this.mainFrame to itself, and the mainframe you pass in will not be used.

public ReportsJPanel (MainFrame mainframe){
this.mainFrame=mainFrame;
setBorder(new TitledBorder("Reports"));
}
names not matching in your code this.mainFrame = mainframe;
method parameter name is mainframe
I suggest you to use eclipse like IDE tool

I've got a few problems resizing Java Swing Components

I am building a Java Swing app, which I want it will work this way:
When you resize the window, the JScrollPane object (which is within a JSplitPane) should redimension its minimum, maximum and preferred size taking as reference the current window width.
I fixed this settings on the method componentResized() of ComponentAdapter class, however, it doesn't work as suppose must do.
This is the code. I wish you test it on your pc and can help me.
Thanks a lot for your time payed.
import java.awt.event.*;
import java.awt.geom.*;
import javax.swing.*;
import java.awt.*;
public class ComVisor extends JFrame
{
private JList imagesList;
private JPanel imagePanel;
private JSplitPane mainPanel;
private JScrollPane scrollPanelRight;
private int width;
public ComVisor(String nameApplication)
{
setFrame(nameApplication);
setComponents();
}
private void setFrame(String nameApplication)
{
setLayout(new BorderLayout(1, 3));
setTitle(nameApplication);
setMinimumSize(new Dimension(400, 200));
setDefaultCloseOperation(EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
setSize(new Dimension(Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getScreenSize()));
setLocationRelativeTo(null);
this.addWindowListener(
new WindowAdapter()
{
#Override
public void windowClosing(WindowEvent e)
{
JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(ComVisor.this, nameApplication + "-Salida");
return;
}
}
);
this.addComponentListener(
new ComponentAdapter()
{
#Override
public void componentResized(ComponentEvent E)
{
width = getWidth();
scrollPanelRight.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(width / 3, 0));
scrollPanelRight.setMinimumSize(new Dimension(width / 7, 0));
scrollPanelRight.setMaximumSize(new Dimension(width / 5 * 4, 0));
return;
}
}
);
}
private void setComponents()
{
String[] a = {"dsdsdsd", "dsdsdkkhskj", "dskhkjdhskjdhksdh", "sdskdhskjhds"};
JButton b = new JButton("Soy un boton xD");
JPanel p = new JPanel();
imagesList = new JList(a);
p.add(b);
imagesList.setVisibleRowCount(100);
scrollPanelRight = new JScrollPane(imagesList);
mainPanel = new JSplitPane(JSplitPane.HORIZONTAL_SPLIT, scrollPanelRight, p);
add(mainPanel, BorderLayout.CENTER);
return;
}
private class Manejador implements ActionListener
{
#Override
public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent listener)
{
return;
}
}
}
and this is the main class, which calls a Comvisor object
import static javax.swing.SwingUtilities.invokeLater;
public class Principal
{
public static void main(String[] args)
{
invokeLater(
new Runnable()
{
#Override
public void run()
{
new ComVisor("ComVisor").setVisible(true);

Mouse event doesn't work in java for some reason

Mouse event appears not to work, and i can't find out, why.
I added a debug output at imgEdit.drawDot and there's no output at the console. I'm a newbie in java, so my code may seem to be very bad, as well as my english
import javax.swing.*;
import java.awt.*;
import java.awt.event.MouseEvent;
import java.awt.event.MouseMotionListener;
/**
* Created by doctor on 12/29/15.
*/
public class MainUI {
Window mainWindow;
MainUI() {
mainWindow = new Window();
}
}
class Window extends JFrame {
Window() {
setBounds(0, 0, 600, 400);
setTitle("RebBrush");
Panel mainPanel = new Panel();
Container mainCont = getContentPane();
mainCont.setLayout(null);
mainCont.add(mainPanel);
setVisible(true);
setDefaultCloseOperation(WindowConstants.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
}
}
class Panel extends JPanel {
private ImageEdit imgEdit;
private JLabel imgLabel;
Panel() {
setLayout(null);
imgEdit = new ImageEdit(600, 400);
imgLabel = new JLabel(new ImageIcon(imgEdit.getImage()));
imgLabel.setBounds(0, 0, 600, 400);
add(imgLabel);
addMouseMotionListener(new MouseMotionListener() {
#Override
public void mouseDragged(MouseEvent e) {
imgEdit.drawDot(e.getX(), e.getY());
}
#Override
public void mouseMoved(MouseEvent e) {
}
});
}
}
Simply getting rid of the null layouts did the trick for me. I'm not sure what ImageEdit is (some other class you've defined?), but by running the following I see "Mouse Dragged" show up in the console, so the mouseDragged method is definitely being called. Just uncomment the imageEdit stuff to put it back in.
import javax.swing.*;
import java.awt.*;
import java.awt.event.MouseEvent;
import java.awt.event.MouseMotionListener;
/**

MainUI() {
mainWindow = new Window();
}
public static void main(String[] args) {

}
}
class Window extends JFrame {

setBounds(0, 0, 600, 400);
setTitle("RebBrush");
Panel mainPanel = new Panel();
Container mainCont = getContentPane();
mainCont.add(mainPanel);
setVisible(true);
setDefaultCloseOperation(WindowConstants.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
}
}
class Panel extends JPanel {
//private ImageEdit imgEdit;
private JLabel imgLabel;

//imgEdit = new ImageEdit(600, 400);
//imgLabel = new JLabel(new ImageIcon(imgEdit.getImage()));
//imgLabel.setBounds(0, 0, 600, 400);
//add(imgLabel);
addMouseMotionListener(new MouseMotionListener() {
#Override
public void mouseDragged(MouseEvent e) {
System.out.println("Mouse Dragged");
//imgEdit.drawDot(e.getX(), e.getY());
}
#Override
public void mouseMoved(MouseEvent e) {
}
});
}
}

How to pass value JList item from JFrame into another JFrame (just value)?

I have write a test with two class.
The first JPanel, Gestion: JFrame with jlist + button (the button open the Jlist 2, PanelTest)
The second JPanel, PanelTest: JFrame and I want to recover in String, the select value item in the JFrame Gestion (JList)
How to do that ?
Gestion.java:
package IHM;
import java.awt.BorderLayout;
import java.awt.EventQueue;
import java.awt.List;
import javax.swing.JDialog;
import javax.swing.JFrame;
import javax.swing.JPanel;
import javax.swing.border.EmptyBorder;
import javax.swing.event.DocumentListener;
import javax.swing.event.ListSelectionEvent;
import javax.swing.event.ListSelectionListener;
import javax.swing.JList;
import javax.swing.JButton;
import java.awt.event.ActionEvent;
import java.awt.event.ActionListener;
import java.awt.event.MouseAdapter;
import java.awt.event.MouseEvent;
import java.sql.SQLException;
public class Gestion extends JFrame {
private DocumentListener myListener;
public String test;
private JPanel contentPane;
/**

public static void main(String[] args) {
EventQueue.invokeLater(new Runnable() {
public void run() {
try {
Gestion frame = new Gestion();
frame.setVisible(true);
} catch (Exception e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}
}
});
}
public String getTest() {
return test;
}
/**
* Create the frame.
* #throws Exception
*/
public Gestion() throws Exception {
setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
setBounds(100, 100, 450, 300);
contentPane = new JPanel();
contentPane.setBorder(new EmptyBorder(5, 5, 5, 5));
contentPane.setLayout(new BorderLayout(0, 0));
setContentPane(contentPane);
final PanelTest panel2 = new PanelTest();
JPanel panel = new JPanel();
contentPane.add(panel, BorderLayout.NORTH);
String choix[] = {" Pierre", " Paul", " Jacques", " Lou", " Marie"};
final JList list = new JList(choix);
panel.add(list);
list.addListSelectionListener(new ListSelectionListener() {
public void valueChanged(ListSelectionEvent arg0) {
test = (String) list.getSelectedValue();
System.out.println(test);
// PanelTest.setValue(test);
}
});
JPanel panel_1 = new JPanel();
contentPane.add(panel_1, BorderLayout.SOUTH);
JButton btnNewButton = new JButton("New button");
btnNewButton.addActionListener(new ActionListener() {
#Override
public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
new PanelTest().setVisible(true);
fermerFenetre();
}
});
panel_1.add(btnNewButton);
}
public void fermerFenetre(){
this.setVisible(false);
}
}
PanelTest.java
package IHM;
import java.awt.BorderLayout;
public class PanelTest extends JFrame {
public String tyty;
private JPanel contentPane;
private JTextField textField;
/**
* Launch the application.
*/
public static void main(String[] args) {
EventQueue.invokeLater(new Runnable() {
public void run() {
try {
PanelTest frame = new PanelTest();
frame.setVisible(true);
} catch (Exception e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}
}
});
}
/**
* Create the frame.
*/
public PanelTest() {
setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
setBounds(100, 100, 450, 300);
contentPane = new JPanel();
contentPane.setBorder(new EmptyBorder(5, 5, 5, 5));
contentPane.setLayout(new BorderLayout(0, 0));
setContentPane(contentPane);
textField = new JTextField();
contentPane.add(textField, BorderLayout.WEST);
textField.setColumns(10);
}
}
Suggestions:
Make your list variable a field, not a local variable, or else make it a final local variable so that it is accessible inside of the anonymous ActionListener.
Obtain the selected list item in your ActionListener where you launch the 2nd window.
Pass that String into your PanelTest object via a String parameter.
The second window should be a dialog such as a JDialog, not a JFrame.
As an aside, you'll rarely want to have your GUI classes extend top level windows such as JFrames or JDialogs as that greatly limits the flexibility of your GUI code.
For example,
import java.awt.Component;
import java.awt.Dialog.ModalityType;
import java.awt.Window;
import java.awt.event.ActionEvent;
import javax.swing.*;
#SuppressWarnings("serial")
public class Gestion2 extends JPanel {
private static final String CHOIX[] = { " Pierre", " Paul", " Jacques",
" Lou", " Marie" };
private JList<String> choixList = new JList<>(CHOIX);
public Gestion2() {
JPanel listPanel = new JPanel();
listPanel.add(new JScrollPane(choixList));
JPanel btnPanel = new JPanel();
btnPanel.add(new JButton(new ListSelectAction("Select Item and Press")));
setLayout(new BoxLayout(this, BoxLayout.PAGE_AXIS));
add(listPanel);
add(btnPanel);
}
private class ListSelectAction extends AbstractAction {
public ListSelectAction(String name) {
super(name);
}
#Override
public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
String selectedItem = choixList.getSelectedValue();
if (selectedItem != null) {
PanelTest2 panelTest2 = new PanelTest2(selectedItem);
Component component = (Component) e.getSource();
Window win = SwingUtilities.getWindowAncestor(component);
// JOptionPane example
JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(win, panelTest2,
"JOptionPane Example", JOptionPane.PLAIN_MESSAGE);
// or JDialog example
JDialog dialog = new JDialog(win, "JDialog Example",
ModalityType.APPLICATION_MODAL);
dialog.add(panelTest2);
dialog.pack();
dialog.setLocationRelativeTo(win);
dialog.setVisible(true);
}
}
}
private static void createAndShowGui() {
Gestion2 mainPanel = new Gestion2();
JFrame frame = new JFrame("Gestion2");
frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.DISPOSE_ON_CLOSE);
frame.getContentPane().add(mainPanel);
frame.pack();
frame.setLocationByPlatform(true);
frame.setVisible(true);
}
public static void main(String[] args) {
SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable() {
public void run() {
createAndShowGui();
}
});
}
}
#SuppressWarnings("serial")
class PanelTest2 extends JPanel {
private String selectedItem;
private JTextField textField = new JTextField(10);
public PanelTest2(String selectedItem) {
this.selectedItem = selectedItem;
textField.setText(selectedItem);
add(new JLabel("Selected Item:"));
add(textField);

Having Trouble to use jbutton to open a new window

i modified my code but still faced problem ,i want to MyPanel2 inside open to MyPanel by clicking button , how do i do that , here is my code given which is pop open after clicking button of Myplanel..

Removing JPanel from a JFrame

I am trying to remove a JPanel not hide it but i can't find anything that works.
This is the code in the panel that needs to remove itself when a button is pressed:
play.addActionListener(new ActionListener() {
public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
Frame frame = new Frame(); //referencing to my JFrame class (this class is a JPanel)
//need to remove this panel on this line
frame.ThreeD(); // adds a new panel
}
});
UPDATED
This is the full code:
package ThreeD;
import java.awt.Rectangle;
import java.awt.event.ActionEvent;
import java.awt.event.ActionListener;
import javax.swing.JButton;
import javax.swing.JPanel;
import javax.swing.UIManager;
import Run.Frame;
public class Launcher extends JPanel{
private JButton play, options, help, mainMenu;
private Rectangle rplay, roptions, rhelp, rmainMenu;
private int buttonWidthLocation, buttonWidth, buttonHeight;
private int width = 1280;
public Launcher() {
this.setLayout(null);
drawButtons();
}
private void drawButtons() {
try {
UIManager.setLookAndFeel(UIManager.getSystemLookAndFeelClassName());
} catch(Exception e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}
play = new JButton("Play");
options = new JButton("Options");
help = new JButton("Help");
mainMenu = new JButton("Main Menu");
buttonWidthLocation = (width / 2) - (buttonWidth / 2);
buttonWidth = 80;
buttonHeight = 40;
rplay = new Rectangle(buttonWidthLocation, 150, buttonWidth, buttonHeight);
roptions = new Rectangle(buttonWidthLocation, 300, buttonWidth, buttonHeight);
rhelp = new Rectangle(buttonWidthLocation, 450, buttonWidth, buttonHeight);
rmainMenu = new Rectangle(buttonWidthLocation, 600, buttonWidth, buttonHeight);
play.setBounds(rplay);
options.setBounds(roptions);
help.setBounds(rhelp);
mainMenu.setBounds(rmainMenu);
add(play);
add(options);
add(help);
add(mainMenu);
play.addActionListener(new ActionListener() {
public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
Frame frame = new Frame();
//need to remove this panel here
frame.ThreeD();
}
});
options.addActionListener(new ActionListener() {
public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
System.out.println("options");
}
});
help.addActionListener(new ActionListener() {
public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
System.out.println("help");
}
});
mainMenu.addActionListener(new ActionListener() {
public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
System.out.println("mainMenu");
}
});
}
}
And this is my Frame class:
package Run;
import javax.swing.*;
import ThreeD.Display;
import ThreeD.Launcher;
import TowerDefence.Window;
import java.awt.*;
import java.awt.image.BufferedImage;
public class Frame extends JFrame{
public static String title = "Game";
/*public static int GetScreenWorkingWidth() {
return java.awt.GraphicsEnvironment.getLocalGraphicsEnvironment().getMaximumWindowBounds().width;
}*/
/*public static int GetScreenWorkingHeight() {
return java.awt.GraphicsEnvironment.getLocalGraphicsEnvironment().getMaximumWindowBounds().height;
}*/
//public static Dimension size = new Dimension(GetScreenWorkingWidth(), GetScreenWorkingHeight());
public static Dimension size = new Dimension(1280, 774);
public static void main(String args[]) {
Frame frame = new Frame();
System.out.println("Width of the Frame Size is "+size.width+" pixels");
System.out.println("Height of the Frame Size is "+size.height+" pixels");
}
public Frame() {
setTitle(title);
setSize(size);
setResizable(false);
setLocationRelativeTo(null);
setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
ThreeDLauncher();
}
public void ThreeDLauncher() {
Launcher launcher = new Launcher();
add(launcher);
setVisible(true);
}
public void TowerDefence() {
setLayout(new GridLayout(1, 1, 0, 0));
Window window = new Window(this);
add(window);
setVisible(true);
}
public void ThreeD() {
BufferedImage cursor = new BufferedImage(16, 16, BufferedImage.TYPE_INT_ARGB);
Cursor blank = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().createCustomCursor(cursor, new Point(0, 0), "blank");
getContentPane().setCursor(blank);
Display display = new Display();
add(display);
setVisible(true);
display.start();
}
}
Basically - you are creating new instance of Frame in line:
Frame frame = new Frame(); //referencing to my JFrame class (this class is a JPanel)
New instance of Frame is not visible, and you're try to remove your Launcher from not visible new Frame. But this is wrong - you should remove Launcher from Frame that you created previously in main function (that is: parent of Launcher component).
Here goes an example:
public class TestFrame extends JFrame {
public static void main(String[] args) {
SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable() {
#Override
public void run() {
TestFrame frame = new TestFrame();
frame.getContentPane().add(new MyPanel(frame));
frame.setSize(200, 200);
frame.setLocationRelativeTo(null);
frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
frame.setVisible(true);
}
});
}
}
And MyPanel class:
public class MyPanel extends JPanel {
public MyPanel(final TestFrame frame) {
JButton b = new JButton("Play");
add(b);
b.addActionListener(new ActionListener() {
#Override
public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
Container pane = frame.getContentPane();
pane.remove(MyPanel.this);
JPanel otherPanel = new JPanel();
otherPanel.add(new JLabel("OtherPanel"));
pane.add(otherPanel);
pane.revalidate();
}
});
}
}
In your example you should add a reference to Frame in your Launcher constructor:
public Launcher(Frame frame) {
this.frame = frame;
...
Init Launcher:
public void ThreeDLauncher() {
Launcher launcher = new Launcher(this);
and use:
play.addActionListener(new ActionListener() {
public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
//need to remove this panel here
frame.getContentPane().remove(Launcher.this);
frame.ThreeD();
}
});
Say your panel is myPanel you can remove it from the main frame by:
frame.getContentPane().remove(myPanel);
