SIngleton object initialization and dependency injection - java

I usually create singleton classes using singleton holder pattern like this:

Everything ok. But, what about if I need inject one dependency to initialize the singleton object?
In that case, I add one method initialize that receives the dependency and must be called just one time:

public static final void initialize(Dependency d) {
SingletonHolder.INSTANCE.setDependency(d);

Am I in the right way? Is there another solution? I know that it depends on the program, my logic and so on... but how generally should be solved this problem?

I think you are overcomplicating it. In a few places I worked (including my current one) we don't try to enforce singletons. All the wiring for the actual application is done in one place, so if you searched for usages of constructor you should find one in src and probably multiple in test. See the code below.
A few disadvantages of your approach:
you lose immutability, Foo's dependency can change
both setDependency and initialize methods are test code in production
your constructor doesn't create a valid object, a second half of constructor is in initialize method which you have to remember to call after calling constructor
SingletonHolder is a boiler plate code, I am not sure why don't you just declare public static final Foo instance field instead?
it is still possible to create multiple instances of Foo using reflection API and object serialisation mechanisms

The problem with this approach is that the initialize method can be invoked more than once, and there is no indication in your code that setting the dependency is being handled with thread safety.
If you're fine with that, then your lazy initialization idiom is fine.
Otherwise, you could throw an IllegalStateException or otherwise silently do nothing when the dependency is being set more than once within your singleton instance.
Edit
As Andy Thomas says, you also aren't checking whether the dependency is set before getInstance is invoked, or at least your code doesn't display it.

singleton public static final

I've been wondering about singletons in Java. By convention, a singleton is set up something like this:

Recently I've switched to using the following:
public static final MyClass instance = new MyClass();
private MyClass(){}
This is a lot shorter, faster as there's no null-check, and typing MyClass.instance feels nicer to me than typing MyClass.getInstance(). Is there any reason why the second is not the mainstream way to do this?
The first version creates the instance the first time it is actually needed, while the second (the shorter) runs the constructor as soon as the class is initialized
A class or interface type T will be initialized immediately before the
first occurrence of any one of the following:
T is a class and an instance of T is created.
T is a class and a static method declared by T is invoked.
A static field declared by T is assigned.
A static field declared by T is used and the field is not a constant
variable (§4.12.4).
T is a top level class (§7.6), and an assert statement (§14.10)

Invocation of certain reflective methods in class Class and in
package java.lang.reflect also causes class or interface initialization.
The initialization upon first usage is a performance improvement that may speed up the startup of the application if the code in the constructor makes expensive operations. On the other hand, the second version is straightforward to read and is automatically thread-safe.
Anyway, the state of the art is not creating singleton in either ways: for a bunch of KB you can get dependency injection libraries that make it working for you, and also handle more complex scenarios (for example look at Spring and AOP-backed injection).

The way you have first described is known as lazy instantiation, i.e the object will only be created when it is first called. This method is not thread-safe as it is possible for a second thread to create a second instance.
If you read the following book:
Effective Java by Joshua Bloch
He explains that the best implementation of the singleton pattern is through the use of an Enum :

Then you would call your singleton through the Enum as follows:

This fits nicely with what you are saying in terms of it looks nicer and shorter to write but also guarantees there can never be a second instance.
I can think of two reasons:
The first is Encapsulation: you might have second thoughts about how and when your singleton is initialized, after your class has been exposed to client code. And an initialization method gives you more freedom as to changing your strategy later on. For example you might change your mind and decide to use two different constructors instead of one, according to another static variable's value at runtime. With your solution you're bound to using just one constructor at the time your class is loaded into memory, whereas with getInstance() you can change the initialization logic without affecting the interface to the client code.
The second is Lazy Initialization : with the conventional singleton implementation the MyClass object is loaded into memory only when needed by the client code for the first time. And if the client code doesn't need it at all, you save on the memory allocated by your application. Note that whether your singleton is needed or not might not be certain until the program runs. For example it might depend on the user interaction with the program.
However the Lazy Initialization is not something you might necessarily want. For example if you're programming an interactive system and the initialization of your singleton is time consuming, it might actually be better to initialize it when the program is loading rather than when the user is already interacting with it, cause the latter might cause a latency in your system response the first time getInstance() is called. But in this case you can just have your instance initialized with the public method as in:
private static MyClass instance = getInstance();
The best way to synchronize the threads is using Double Checked (to ensure that only one thread will enter the synchronized block at a time and to avoid obtaining the lock every time the code is executed).

Abstract int() causing an invisible halt in my application

I noticed today that a certain feature wasn't working at all in my API and it's actually devistating to the progress I'm making on my application that's using the API. There's absolutely no errors being produced, the application doesn't stop, hang, or even stutter. It justs acts as if I called return and carries on with it's processing.
The in a nutshell class:

in which I have another class that inherits from this like so:

Now, the class "Bar" isn't in the same project as the "Foo" class, as the "Foo" class is part of an API (.jar) that is added as a dependency; However inside the .jar I have some code that needs to reference the value set by the overriden class over bar()
The code that I'm using that currently upsets my girlfriend is below:
int foo = Foo.getSingleton().bar(); // This should return the value of 5 set earlier
Which does not set the value of foo, and in-fact doesn't even print out to the console if I add a System.out.println after it. It literally just feels like it return's
This constructor
private static Foo singleton;
public Foo() {
singleton = this;
}
which initializes the static singleton field will only be invoked if you create a new instance of a subtype of Foo, ie. Bar.
You haven't showed a new instance creation expression involving Bar, so I assume there isn't one.
As such
int foo = Foo.getSingleton().bar(); // This should return the value of 5 set earlier
can only terminate with a NullPointerException when trying to invoke bar() on the null returned by getSingleton().
If you aren't seeing the NPE, then you must be catching it and ignoring it.
Your singleton is not correctly implemented. Foo.getSingleton() will return singleton which is null at that point. The static variable is only initialized in the constructor which is never called in your example. You'll have to initialize singleton in a static context, e.g. inside your getSingleton() method with a null check:

As MihaiC correctly stated in the comments, this wouldn't work since Foo is abstract. I did miss that little detail. Considering this it really doesn't make sense to have a singleton of an abstract class, unless you try to somehow initialize it with a Bar instance. The design still feels strange to me. Still leave my answer above for now for the general concept.

How to make sure that there is just one instance of class in JVM?

I am developing a design pattern, and I want to make sure that here is just one instance of a class in Java Virtual Machine, to funnel all requests for some resource through a single point, but I don't know if it is possible.
I can only think of a way to count instances of a class and destroy all instance after first is created.
Is this a right approach? If not, is there any other way?
Use the singleton pattern. The easiest implementation consists of a private constructor and a field to hold its result, and a static accessor method with a name like getInstance().
The private field can be assigned from within a static initializer block or, more simply, using an initializer. The getInstance() method (which must be public) then simply returns this instance,

Note that the method of using “lazy evaluation” in the getInstance() method (which
is advocated in Design Patterns), is not necessary in Java because Java already uses “lazy
loading.” Your singleton class will probably not get loaded unless its getInstance()
is called, so there is no point in trying to defer the singleton construction until it’s needed
by having getInstance() test the singleton variable for null and creating the singleton
there.
Using this class is equally simple: simply get and retain the reference, and invoke methods on it:

Some commentators believe that a singleton should also provide a public final
clone() method that just throws an exception, to avoid subclasses that “cheat” and
clone() the singleton. However, it is clear that a class with only a private constructor
cannot be subclassed, so this paranoia does not appear to be necessary.
That's the well known Singleton pattern: you can implement this as follows:

You then call for the instance (like you would constructing a non-singleton) with:
SingletonClass.getInstance();
But in literature, a Singleton is in general considered to be a bad design idea. Of course this always somewhat depends on the situation, but most programmers advice against it. Only saying it, don't shoot on the messenger...
There is a school of thought that considers the Singleton pattern to in fact be an anti-pattern.
Considering a class A that you only wish to have one of, then an alternative is to have a builder or factory class that itself limits the creation of the number of objects of Class A, and that could be by a simple counter.
The advantage is that Class A no longer needs to worry about that, it concentrates on its real purpose. Every class that uses it no longer has to worry about it being a singleton either (no more getInstance() calls).
You want the Singleton pattern. There is an excellent discussion of how to implement this properly. If you do this right, there will only ever be one instance of the class.
Essentially what you are going to do is create a class, hold a single instantiated object of that class at the static level, and provide a static accessor to get it (getInstance() or similar). Make the constructor final so people can't create their own instances out of the blue. That link above has plenty of great advice on how to do this.
Use enum. In Java enum is the only true way to create a singleton. Private constructors can be still called through reflection.

The correct technical approach is to declare all of the constructors for the class as private so that instances of the class can only be created by the class itself. Then you code the class only ever create one instance.
Other Answers show some of the ways to implement this, according to the "Singleton" design pattern. However, implementing a singleton like this has some drawbacks, including making it significantly harder to write unit tests.
I prefer lazy singleton class, which overrides readResolve method.
For Serializable and Externalizable classes, the readResolve method allows a class to replace/resolve the object read from the stream before it is returned to the caller. By implementing the readResolve method, a class can directly control the types and instances of its own instances being deserialized.
Lazy singleton using /Initialization-on-demand_holder_idiom:

Java - make class static instead of one instance of it

Let's say i have a class, and I made only one instance of it and i don't need more than that.
Should i just make the class static ? (not the class itself but the functions and the variables).
In the example below should i make the class static if i won't make more than one instance of it ?

If your class has no state, say:
class NoState {
static int sum(int i1, int i2) { return i1 + i2; }

then it makes sense to use static methods.
If you must ensure that there is only one instance of your class, then you could use a singleton, but be careful: global state can be evil.
Not as bad as a singleton, you could use static fields/methods: it can be useful is some situations but should not be abused.
In any other situations (= most of the time), just use normal instance variables/methods.
You can use an enum to define a singleton.

However, this is only need if you want to enforce one instance. Otherwise, I would just use new Foo(); and call it only once, if you only need one.
You can use Singleton. However, make sure if Singleton is what is really required - sometimes singletons gets overused where simple class with static methods might suffice. There are many ways to create singleton as explained What is an efficient way to implement a singleton pattern in Java?
Note that with Java 5, enum is the preferred way to create singleton.
You say that i don't need more than that so my answer is that not make more than one and if you really like to enforce the instance that it should be only one for class then use the enum best way to implement the singleton in java

Basically static methods and fields means that you don't need any instances of the class.
In you case you need 'singleton' class, you can either use enum or make it a singleton by yourself, using the specific set of rules.
It really depends on the scope of your application. If you want this object to be used as a singleton you would provide a static method to get the one and only instance of the class.

If you plan to use a framework like spring you would just add one object to the application context.

Simplified Singleton pattern in Java

The default way to implement singleton pattern is:

In an old project, I've tried to simplify the things writing:

But it sometimes fail. I just never knew why, and I did the default way.

So, I would like to know opinions..
Is this a aleatory fail code?

The recommended (by Effective Java 2nd ed) way is to do the "enum singleton pattern":

The key insight here is that enum values are single-instance, just like singleton. So, by making a one-value enum, you have just made yourself a singleton. The beauty of this approach is that it's completely thread-safe, and it's also safe against any kinds of loopholes that would allow people to create other instances.
The first solution is (I believe) not thread-safe.
The second solution is (I believe) thread-safe, but might not work if you have complicated initialization dependencies in which MyClass.getInstance() is called before the MyClass static initializations are completed. That's probably the problem you were seeing.
Both solutions allow someone to create another instance of your (notionally) singleton class.
A more robust solution is:

In a modern JVM, the cost of acquiring a lock is miniscule, provided that there is no contention over the lock.
EDIT #Nate questions my statement about static initialization order possibly causing problems. Consider the following (pathological) example:

There are two possible initialization orders for these two classes. Both result in a static method being called before the method's classes static initialization has been performed. This will result in either ClassA.myB or ClassB.myA being initialized to null.
In practice, cyclic dependencies between statics are less obvious than this. But the fact remains that if there is a cyclic dependency: 1) the Java compiler won't be able to tell you about it, 2) the JVM will not tell you about it. Rather, the JVM will silently pick an initialization order without "understanding" the semantics of what you are trying to do ... possibly resulting in something unexpected / wrong.
EDIT 2 - This is described in the JLS 12.4.1 as follows:
As shown in an example in §8.3.2.3, the fact that initialization code is unrestricted allows examples to be constructed where the value of a class variable can be observed when it still has its initial default value, before its initializing expression is evaluated, but such examples are rare in practice. (Such examples can be also constructed for instance variable initialization; see the example at the end of §12.5). The full power of the language is available in these initializers; programmers must exercise some care. ...
The second example is preferable, since the first isn't thread safe (as pointed out in the comments). The first example uses a technique called lazy instantiation (or lazy initialization), which ensures that the Singleton instance isn't created unless it's actually needed. This isn't really necessary in Java because of the way Java handles class loading and static instance variable initialization.
I also would like to point out that singletons are testing nightmare and that according to the big guys you should use google's dependency injection framework.
Remember, you need to declare a private constructor to ensure the singleton property.

As others have noted, the first is not thread-safe. Don't bother with it as the second is perfectly fine, and will instantiate the object only when MyClass is referenced. Further it makes the reference final which expresses the intent better.
Just make sure that the declaration
private static final MyClass INSTANCE = new MyClass();
is the first static declaration in your class to avoid risk of calls to getInstance() or INSTANCE before it is initialized.
