Closed 6 years ago.
i'm trying to deploy a rest application on tomcat7 that is running on ubuntu. After deploying the .war file using the application manager, when i access the url, its thrown me an exception.
It's important to say that, when i threw the .war on tomcat running on windows, it worked perfetly. I was running the latest versions of JRE and JDK.
I've tried everything i could find on the internet, but none worked so far. The error stack can be found below.

Both JRE_HOME and JAVA_HOME are pointing to the right place /usr/lib/jvm/jre1.7.0_79 and /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.7.0-openjdk-amd64

You have a mismatch in Java version on your local machine and your Ubuntu server. I think you have Java 8 on your local machine that you used to generate your war file. You should either update Java on your server or compile with a JDK 7 to generate your war file. You can use your IDE to compile with a different version.

Exception when forwarding request to servlet in Java web application

I have a problem and I don't know how to solve it.
My web application MyApp is a Maven web application project (Java 8 and Java EE 5). To run an updated version as test instance on the same server, I changed the Context Path of the application from MyApp to MyAppTest. As servlet container, I'm using Tomcat 8.
The MyApp instance is working as expected. However the MyAppTest instance is throwing an exception when forwarding the request to one of my servlets. Even if MyApp and MyAppTest are identical except the context path, this exception occurs. The Servlets are mapped via Guice's ServletModule.

The Servlet forwarding the Request does this:
RequestDispatcher dispatcher = request.getRequestDispatcher("/index.jsp");
if (!response.isCommitted()) {
dispatcher.forward(request, response);
}
The URL index.jsp is mapped to another Servlet. It forwards the request to a JSP:
request.getRequestDispatcher("/theme/index.jsp").forward(request, response);
There the exception occurs. Some other JSPs are included into the index.jsp like this:
<jsp:include flush="true" page="menu.jsp"/>
The menu.jsp is located in the same folder as the index.jsp.
As mentioned before, everything works fine as long as the Context path is MyApp. When changed to MyAppTest the exception occurs. It must have something to do with the Context path itself. When changing the Path to MyAppTest, the exception message is "String index out of range: -4". When I change the Path to MyAppTesting, the exception message changes to "String index out of range: -7".
To solve this I tried the following:
Changing the Context path and the docBase to MyAppTest in the context.xml of the project.
Changing the Artifact ID of the project to MyAppTest.
Changing the Project Name to MyAppTest.
Nothing worked. And I don't know what causes the exeption: Maven, Tomcat or Guice.

.War Works to deploy on Windows but fails to deploy on a Linux server (Tomcat 7)

As title introduced, the .War file I'm trying to deploy by using Tomcat 7 is not working on a machine running Linux. It does work on Windows and is of course deployed with Tomcat 7.
I've tried to track down the issue alone & searched for related problems on the web including this forum with no success so far. That is why i created this thread asking for help / hints.
The error message I tracked down are the following:

It were 2 problems actually causing this issue.
To solve the issue I had to:
*Check the web.xml VERY carefully after any misstakes like e.g. servlets that do not exist our already defined things e.g. driver being defined twice, meaning it's defined somewhere already AND also in the web.xml.
*Remove servlet in the ..\WEB-INF\lib folder of the project. E.g. javax.servlet-api-3.0.1.jar + javax.servlet-api-3.1.0.jar were removed in this case.
NOTE I even had jars that can conflict with each other on project-level but still I was able to deployed successfully on Windows but not on Linux.
Trust me both of the things I mentioned can be a issue, most likely if you take over work from other devs that have done this miss.
Just had the same issue and synchronizing the Java version for the Maven build (from 1.8 to 1.10) and the running environment (1.10) solved it.

java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: org.apache.commons.dbcp2.BasicDataSource in eclipse using deployment assembly

I have two projects.
Java SE based let's say abcAPI.
Dynamic Web Project using tomcat server. let's say abc-web
I followed this tutorial automatically build and include one eclipse project into another to include abcAPI into abc-web. So that I have clear separation between these two. I included all necessary dependencies and API's in abcAPI project as well and I believe when using deployment assembly their shouldn't be any problem because underlying referencing project already has reference to it's libraries and dependencies in its libs folder.
I see no error before execution. But after the project runs and BasicDataSource is called I get this exception.

Uptil now I have tried many things as suggested by SO community i.e.
Delete Server
Clean server
Restart Eclipse
Build Code
Deploy Again
etc.
But nothing has yet worked for me. Please guide!
I got the same error using iIntelliJ IDEA, Maven, Tomcat Server. As figured out the problem was in Artifacts(The dependency was not included to WEB-INF/lib).
To fix it - open Project Structure -> Artifacts -> drag-and-drop commons-* from Available Elements to lib

Try copying the hibernate jar files into WEB-INF\lib folder,
just clean build to be sure and try again
Looks like you miss the hibernate-<version>.jar in your classpath. Download and add it to the classpath.
The missing class is in the hibernate-tools package. You can find the jar here:
http://mvnrepository.com/artifact/org.hibernate/hibernate-tools
Just make sure you use the proper version
I agree with Jens and I would approach it like this:
Adopt a build system like Gradle or Maven)
Put the Hibernate dependency in your build file with your project
Build it
If you do these things, the build system will pull down Hibernate for you.
This error can happen when your hibernate jar files has not been exported with your web archive.
You can follow below steps if you are using Eclipse.
Right click the project -> Build Path -> Configure Build Path
In the list at left side click on Deployment Assembly. Click "Add" button. Select "Java Build Path Entries" and click next.
Now select your hibernate jar files or library. Click finish. Then click Ok.
Restart the server if necessary.
