Java Graphics Rectangle Size Changing - java

I have just started to learn Java, so excuse my messy code. Looking all over the internet, I have not found a solution to this question yet. This is the game pong. I have to padels that I am controlling ith the keys, 'w', 's', up, and down. When I draw the panels in my graphics section, I use the padelY for Y1 and use padelY + padelLength(A constant) for Y2. I cannot seem to understand why when I rut the program the padels change size as I move them up and down. Also, the padel on the right is named panel1, when I draw the padel I use the screen size - the padel spacing for X1 yet the padel appears to be stuck on the side.
I would really appreciate any advice that anyone could give on those issues or how to clean up my code in general!
Thanks!

See this for documentation on how to use the fillRect() method: https://docs.oracle.com/javase/7/docs/api/java/awt/Graphics.html#fillRect(int,%20int,%20int,%20int)
The arguments are: x position, y position, width and height.
You use it like this: g.fillRect(padelSpace,padel2y,padelSpace + padelWidth,padel2y+padelLength);
The second and third arguments are wrong. You should only be passing the width and height. Like this: g.fillRect(padelSpace, padel2y, padelWidth, padelLength);
More generally, when something is going wrong (drawing the paddle) read the documentation on the methods you use to do that.

Utilizing public variables

I have created a game similar to snake in which the user is first prompted with a jpanel asking which difficulty they want, and whatever JButton they pick influences the size of the map as well as the delay between the snake movements. I have the map size working just fine, but the delay variable never seems to change. I suspect it has something to do with the way the timer is being casted, but I have no idea how to fix it. I am also wondering how when the program is first ran it seems some of the variables don't update, but the second time it is ran all of them are updated. Here is my class with the original variables and collision detection:
import java.util.Random;
import javax.swing.JLabel;
public class GameEngine extends JPanel implements ActionListener{
//creates the size of the panel as well as creating the resolution for all objects, including the players and food.
static final int sWidth = 600;
static final int sHeight = 600;
public static int size = 24;
static int objectSize = (sHeight*sWidth) / size;
public static int delay = 100;
final int playerX[] = new int[objectSize];
final int playerY[] = new int[objectSize];
int bodySize = 4;
int score = 0;
int appleX;
int appleY;
char direction = 'D';
boolean started = false;

and here is the code calling and changing the delay and size variables:
import java.awt.*;
import java.awt.event.*;
import javax.swing.*;
public class StartMenu extends JPanel {
StartMenu()
{
JButton easy = new JButton();
JButton hard = new JButton();
this.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(350,240));
this.setLayout(null);
this.setBackground(Color.black);
this.setFocusable(true);
easy.setBounds(75,40,200,40);
hard.setBounds(75,120,200,40);
this.add(easy);
this.add(hard);
easy.addActionListener(new ActionListener(){
public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e){
setVisible(false);
new SnakeStart();
GameEngine.size = 48;
GameEngine.delay = 140;
}
});
hard.addActionListener(new ActionListener(){
public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e){
setVisible(false);
new SnakeStart();
GameEngine.size = 24;
GameEngine.delay = 70;
}
});
}
}
I assume your GameEngine instance is created before the StartMenu action listeners are executed. If that assumption is correct, that means that GameEngine.timer with the default value of delay is created in the GameEngine constructor and is not updated after the delay is changed.
You need to make sure that you explicitly update your timer with the new delay value after StartMenu actions are called.

Java KeyListener dissappears when adding new object

Brand new to this forum. Tried to learn Java by tutorials for a while, which have worked fine until now when I'm playing around with Swing making a Pong game..
My problem is that when I try to change level in my game my player's keylistener stops working.
I have tried to remove all unnecessary code, hopefully I haven't missed any that causes confusion.
This is what happens in my Main-class, where Data is basically a JPanel working as my background and Player is Another JPanel, I'll get to the Player-class after main.
public class Main {
Data data = new Data(Color.RED);
Player player = new Player(700, 500, 20, 100);
public Main() throws InterruptedException{
run(data, player);
ballRecursive();
}
public void run(Data data) throws InterruptedException {
frame.add(player, BorderLayout.WEST);
frame.add(data, BorderLayout.CENTER);
}
public void ballRecursive() throws InterruptedException {
if(playerScore.returnScore()==1){
Data data = new Data(Color.GREEN);
run(data);
}
This is my Player, tried to remove anything unnecessary here aswell:
public class Player extends JPanel implements ActionListener, KeyListener{
Timer timer = new Timer(5, this);
double yPos = 0, movementY = 0;
int squareSize = 60;
int yBound;
public Player(int w, int h, int width, int height) {
timer.start();
addKeyListener(this);
setFocusable(true);
setFocusTraversalKeysEnabled(false);
yBound = (windowHeight - squareSize);
}
public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
yPos += movementY;
if (yPos < 0) {
yPos = 0;
} else if (yPos + squareSize > yBound) {
yPos = yBound - squareSize;
}
repaint();
}
public void moveUp()
{
if (yPos == 0)
{
movementY = 0;
}
movementY = -1;
}
public void moveDown()
{
if (yPos == yBound)
{
movementY = 0;
}
movementY = 1;
}
public void keyPressed(KeyEvent e)
{
int keyCode = e.getKeyCode();
if (keyCode == KeyEvent.VK_UP) {
moveUp();
}
if (keyCode == KeyEvent.VK_DOWN) {
moveDown();
}
}
public void keyReleased(KeyEvent e)
{
int keyCode = e.getKeyCode();
if (keyCode == KeyEvent.VK_UP)
{
movementY = 0;
}
if (keyCode == KeyEvent.VK_DOWN)
{
movementY = 0;
}

How would I test collision for 2 images in Java.

I am currently making a Space Shooter in Java. I am able to make bullets shoot and enemies come from the top, but I am not sure how to check if they intersect. I understand that the Rectangle class has a intersects method, but I am not sure how I would place the rectangles around the bullets and the enemies, since I don't know beforehand how many may be on the screen. How can I do this? Here is my code:

}
This would work but you shouldn't create new rectangles like this instead you should create a bullet class and a Enemy class that both contains the position and Rectangle anyways good luck!

Java pong can't move both paddles at once

Trying to make pong in java but can't move both paddles at once. You can move one or the other but not both at the same time. Do I need to create 2 threads with 2 different pannels?
Here is where I am specifying the key events

if(e.getKeyCode() == KeyEvent.VK_A || e.getKeyCode() == KeyEvent.VK_S || e.getKeyCode() == KeyEvent.VK_QUOTE || e.getKeyCode() == KeyEvent.VK_SEMICOLON){

}
if(e.getKeyCode() == KeyEvent.VK_QUOTE){

Don't use while (true) but rather a Swing timer.
Don't use KeyListeners but rather Key Bindings.
Consider turning on a Swing Timer (which can act as your "background thread") that moves one paddle when the bindings detect the correct key has been pressed,
and stopping the timer that moves the paddle when the same key is released.
Same for the other paddle but of course having its actions respond to a bindings of a different pair of keys.
When attempting to get something like this working, try to get it working in a very simple program first, one without all the other junk required for your main program, but one which will allow you to test and prove your concept. Then if you get things working in your small program, great, you add the functionality to your main program. And if your small program code doesn't work and you need our help, you can post the small self-contained program here (an sscce) for us to test and modify.

Collision detection using plain arrays and rectangles--java

I am almost done with my first little java game for my final project. It is a sidescroller where you have to shoot/avoid asteroids. My last problem is figuring out how to make my array of asteroids collide with the player's lasers. Here's what I have so far, there's an "AWT-EventQueue-0" java.lang.NullPointerException" on line 137, that I can't deal with. Any help is appreciated.
Edit: I added in my other classes, I realize it would be hard to judge the functionality of my code if I didn't show you where it came from.

Ok, so the problem is the line mentioned in the other answer, but I believe it is that all the enemies may not be initialised before it checks collisions. Because you are making 10000 of them to start with, I think your action performed method may be checking collisions before they have all be created.
One thing to try could be to bring down the amount of enemies you have and see if it still keeps happening, try 100 or 1000, but this still won't fix the issue.
You really want to be change your game to run in it's own loop though, at the moment you are only checking collisions when the player performs an action. so if the player stops moving, no collision detection...
I would suggest that you find a book called 'Killer Game Programming in Java', there are free ebook version, and just read the first 2 chapters about making a game loop. The book is a bit old, but the basics of the loop are very good.
This question here also contains a very simple loop, and some suggestions in the comments about how to make it better.
The error is on the line
rect[i] = e.getBounds();
Are you not initializing the bounds of your Enemy class correctly? Alternatively, the Enemy you pulled out of the array could be null.
