I am setting up test environment for my Spring web application. I use .properties files and Environment to configure my persistence layer properties as shown below(I have skipped code for brevity):
PersistenceConfig.java
#PropertySources({
#PropertySource(value= "classpath:/com/hp/properties/persistence/mysqldb.properties"),
#PropertySource(value = "classpath:/com/hp/properties/persistence/hibernate.properties")})
public class PersistenceConfig {
#Autowired
Environment env;
#Bean
public LocalContainerEntityManagerFactoryBean entityManagerFactory(){
LocalContainerEntityManagerFactoryBean em = new LocalContainerEntityManagerFactoryBean();
em.setDataSource(dataSource());
em.setPackagesToScan(new String[] {"com.hp.model.entity"});
JpaVendorAdapter vendorAdapter = new HibernateJpaVendorAdapter();
em.setJpaVendorAdapter(vendorAdapter);
em.setJpaProperties(hibernateProperties());
return em;
}
private Properties hibernateProperties(){
Properties properties = new Properties();
properties.setProperty("hibernate.dialect", env.getRequiredProperty("hibernate.dialect.mysql"));
properties.setProperty("hibernate.show_sql", env.getRequiredProperty("hibernate.showsql"));
properties.setProperty("hibernate.format_sql", env.getRequiredProperty("hibernate.formatsql"));
return properties;
}
}
I am creating my test classes using Spring's WebApplicationContext as shown below:
#RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class)
#ContextConfiguration(classes={ApplicationConfig.class})
#WebAppConfiguration
#TestPropertySource(value = {"classpath:/com/hp/properties/persistence/mysqldb.properties",
"classpath:/com/hp/properties/persistence/hibernate.properties"})
public class PatientServiceTest {
MockMvc mockMvc;
#Autowired
WebApplicationContext webApplicationContext;
#Before
public void setUp(){
mockMvc = MockMvcBuilders.webAppContextSetup(webApplicationContext).build();
}
#Test
public void testForDependentBeans(){
Assert.assertThat(webApplicationContext.containsBean("patientRepository"), Matchers.is(true));
}
}
But as I run the test I get an error about the intialization of PersistnceConfig as hibernate.properties is not found. I have also tried copying these files from src/main/java to src/test/java and add #TestPropertySource to explicitly provide the properties file. Yet I am getting the same error. Below is the stack trace if it helps.
Also, how can I load different properties file specific to test environment in Spring integeration testing than used by my production.

I try to make tests of other classes that contain functions, but I don't know how or if I'm doing it wrong to inject them to the test and it works correctly. I have this TramsManager test which is located in src/main/java in the com.manager.commons.TramsManager.java package and I have the test file in src/test/java in the com.unittests.ValidateTramsManager package.
Test code:
#RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class)
#SpringBootTest(classes = TramsManager.class)
public class ValidateTramsManagerTest {
#Autowired
TramsManager tramsManager;
If I run it tells me this error :
java.lang.IllegalStateException: Failed to load ApplicationContext
And the class :
#Component
public class TramsManager {
private static Validator validator;
public static String createTramNotification(String operation, String ean) {
return operation + "|" + ean + "|";
}
I have another test where I do the exact same thing with another class and with other medos and it runs fine without any errors.
If i comment this #SpringBootTest(classes = TramsManager.class)
This other error comes out :
org.springframework.beans.factory.UnsatisfiedDependencyException: Error creating bean with name
I've tried ComponentScan trying to access the component where the class #ComponentScan(basePackages = "com.manager.commons") is located and it doesn't work either. What am I doing wrong and how can I fix it.
PD: I am using JUnit version 4

I am using this annotation to display the build version in my app:
#Autowired BuildProperties buildProperties;
...
log.info("Startup finish - {}", buildProperties.getVersion());
With this maven plugin:
<groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-boot-maven-plugin</artifactId>
<configuration>
<executable>true</executable>
</configuration>
<executions>
<execution>
<goals>
<goal>build-info</goal>
</goals>
It works well in the app, but prevent my test to run.
Here is the test class config:
#RunWith(SpringRunner.class)
public class MyRepoReaderTest {
I add the file src/test/resources/META-INF/build-info.properties

How can I make this works during test ?
Solution: add the annotation #SpringBootTest
For me the following works (I am using JUnit 5):
It sufficed to annotate the test class with #ExtendWith(SpringExtension.class) and as the test needs to know the BuildProperties bean, you need to import them to the test-class as well with #Import( {BuildProperties.class })
So the complete annotations for your test class could be:
#ExtendWith(SpringExtension.class)
#DataJpaTest
#Import( {BuildProperties.class })
#ComponentScan("org.yourpackage")
public class MyTestClass {
#Autowired
private TodoUserRepository todoUserRepository;
With this Spring is automatically creating a BuildProperties bean which can be injected in your class, as soon as your own class in instantiated. In my MyTestClass I do this with #Autowired.
The class to test (and the class that really uses the BuildProperties is called TodoUserRepository in the above code snippet).
Whatever you autowire in your class under test has to be set in the test class. One way to do this is using ReflectionTestUtils.
ReflectionTestUtils.setField("yourClass", buildProperties, objBuildProperties)
here objBuildProperties is an object of BuildProperties that you can instantiate and use in the line of code above.
I would also ask you, when exactly do you get this error ? While running a test case or when ?
You can also make the buildProperties not required. Like so:
#Autowired(required = false) // When building or running unit-tests
// from eclipse or intellij, BuildProperties is not available out of the box.
private BuildProperties buildProperties;
Then it will be null when running tests.
In my case, I simply let ProjectInfoAutoConfiguration inject BuildProperties (tested with JUnit 5):
#ExtendWith(SpringExtension.class)
#Import(ProjectInfoAutoConfiguration.class) // puts BuildProperties into context
public class MyRepoReaderTest {
#Autowired BuildProperties buildProperties;
I am writing Junits in springboot application , which has only one Initializer class as
#SpringBootApplication
public class Initializer extends SpringBootServletInitializer {
#Override
protected SpringApplicationBuilder configure(SpringApplicationBuilder
application) {
return application.sources(Initializer.class);
}
}
and other controller and service classes.
My Junit for a service class looks like:
#RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class)
#SpringBootTest
public class ServiceTest {
#Autowired
private CommonUtils commonUtils;
-----do assert cases---------
}
When I am running Junit it is throwing error as:
08:20:27.481 [main] ERROR

Also I have tried with all annotations such as #WebAppConfiguration , #ContextConfiguration(classes = Initializer.class), #SpringBootConfiguration, #ComponentScan, still it throws same error.
There is no other configuration classes like application context in code.
You can test using annotattion #SpringBootTest, with property "classes", where you need to add your spring-boot main class:
#SpringBootTest(classes = YOUR_MAIN_CLASS.class, webEnvironment = SpringBootTest.WebEnvironment.NONE)
My application build with Spring Boot, Hibernate, JUnit. I use H2 database for in memory testing and created a bean to be able to connect to H2 database with SQL tool.
#Configuration
public class H2DataBaseTestConfig {
#Bean(initMethod = "start", destroyMethod = "stop")
public Server h2Server() throws SQLException {
return Server.createTcpServer("-tcp", "-tcpAllowOthers", "-tcpPort", "9092");
}
}
It works fine if I run one test, but if I run all tests I get an error on second and all next test classes
Exception opening port "9092" (port may be in use)
This looks like Spring tries to create application context and initiates bean every time next test class will run, though this conflicts somehow with port opened by itself. How can I run all tests and have this bean working?
Update
As many people mention test classes annotations, I will show them here:
#RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class)
#SpringApplicationConfiguration(IndeedScraper.class)
#TestPropertySource(locations="classpath:test.properties")
I have few #Configuration classes: two database connection/transaction/entity management classes and described here h2Server bean. h2Server bean builder class is stored in src/test/java, while other #Configuration classes in src/main/java
End Update

One of the options can be sharing a Spring context between your test classes as described in this integration test tutorial and also pay attention to context caching description in Spring documentation
That is, to share same runtime context to your unit test classes, try to annotate all of your unit tests which need H2 connection as follows:
#RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class)
...
#ContextConfiguration(classes=H2DataBaseTestConfig.class, loader=AnnotationConfigContextLoader.class)
public class SomeServiceTest {
...
Note, that this approach does not rely on SpringBoot integration testing support which is referred in another answer in this thread.
Update
As it seems not obvious, you may need to list all another necessary #Configuration-annotated classes in there like #ContextConfiguration(classes={H2Config.class, MyConfigFromSrcTest.class, MyConfigFromSrcMain.class, ...}, ... to reflect superset of all context pieces which are required by your integration test classes. And resulting context then will be cached by using exact set of those configuration classes as cache key
#Before
public void setUp() {
createTCPConnection();
}
#After
public void endTest() {
closeTCPConnection();
}
#Test
public void firstTest() {
doTest(1);
}
#Test
public void secondTest() {
doTest(2);
}
Then all your running tests are called between before and after. So, the connection it's created once for that class and all Test methods on it
I'm using spring-boot and spring-session to build a simple rest api. The production application should use the redis-session implementation, whereas the tests should use the default (non-redis) spring-session.
However when the spring-boot-starter-redis maven dependency is declared in the project, spring-boot will automagically create a org.springframework.session.data.redis.config.annotation.web.http.RedisHttpSessionConfiguration without the #EnableRedisHttpSession annotation being anywhere in the test configuration.
My setup
Application code:
// base session config for both prod/dev and test/ci
public class BaseSessionConfig {
#Bean
public HeaderHttpSessionStrategy sessionStrategy() {
return new HeaderHttpSessionStrategy();
}
}
// enable the redis session only in these profiles
#Configuration
#EnableRedisHttpSession
#Profile({"prod", "dev", "local", "vagrant"})
public class RedisSessionConfig extends BaseSessionConfig {
}
Tests:
#WebIntegrationTest
#RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class)
#SpringApplicationConfiguration(classes = {MyApplication.class, MyTestApplicationConfig.class})
public class AuthenticationResourceTest {
private RestTemplate restTemplate = new TestRestTemplate();
#Test
public void testUnauthenticated() {
HttpHeaders headers = restTemplate.getForEntity("http://localhost:8080/api/session", String.class).getHeaders();
// ...
}
}
// session configuration for the test environments
// no redis enabled
#Configuration
#Profile({"ci", "test"})
public class MyTestApplicationConfig extends BaseSessionConfig {
}
How can i disable the redis session auto-configuration inside the junit tests?
The stack trace during tests:

Edit
I figured it out. The reason why the RedisHttpSessionConfig is loaded in tests despite not having the EnableRedisSession annotation on the config is this auto-configuration which comes with spring-boot-starter-web: SessionAutoConfiguration
So in tests, this is the class which needs to be excluded from autoconfiguration:
#WebIntegrationTest
#RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class)
#SpringApplicationConfiguration(classes = TestAppConfig.class)
public class AuthenticationResourceTest {
private RestTemplate restTemplate = new TestRestTemplate();
#Test
public void testUnauthenticated() {
HttpHeaders headers = restTemplate.getForEntity("http://localhost:8080/api/session", String.class).getHeaders();
}
}
#Configuration
#SpringBootApplication(exclude = {SessionAutoConfiguration.class, SessionRedisHttpConfiguration.class})
public class TestAppConfig {
#Configuration
static class SessionConfig extends BaseSessionConfig {
}
}
Use #ActiveProfiles testing annotation to enable certain profiles for test. If you don't activate profiles defined on RedisSessionConfig that configuration shouldn't be loaded.
But also make sure that RedisHttpSessionConfiguration is not loaded by auto-configuration.
Reaction on Comment:
I wasn't sure if Redis has it's auto-configuration class. Looking into Spring Boot, it has. So you need to exclude it during test. Look into this SO thread how to do it.
