When I start my SettingsActivity, I get the following Error, but I don't know why, because I have done everything as always.

You need to do your UI work after setting the layout of the Activity.
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_settings);
select = (Spinner) findViewById(R.id.selectclass);
username = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.username_view);
password = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.password_view);
select.setOnItemSelectedListener(new AdapterView.OnItemSelectedListener() {
public void onItemSelected(AdapterView<?> arg0, View arg1, int pos, long text) {
Toast.makeText(SettingsActivity.this,"" + text,Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
}
public void onNothingSelected(AdapterView<?> arg0) {
}
});
}

startActivity sending to wrong activity: Android

I'm trying to have it to where after the my "Overview" Button is clicked the next button "Variables" is enabled. The button enables, however the setOnClickListener for my "Variables" sends me to my OverviewActivity, rather than my VariablesActivity. I've been stuck on this for a while.
The Variables Activity is just a multiple choice screen, but i was just setting it up.
I'm really new to Java and Android Studio, so this is getting confusing fast
Code:
public class HomeActivity extends AppCompatActivity {
public Button signOutBtn;
public Button overviewBtn;
public Button varBtn;
FirebaseAuth auth;
boolean overviewDone;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_home);
signOutBtn = findViewById(R.id.signOutBtn);
overviewBtn = findViewById(R.id.overviewBtn);
varBtn = findViewById(R.id.varBtn);
auth = FirebaseAuth.getInstance();
overviewDone = false;
signOutBtn.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View view) {
auth.signOut();
startActivity(new Intent(HomeActivity.this, SignInActivity.class));
finish();
}
});
overviewBtn.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {

Intent overviewBtnIntent = new Intent(HomeActivity.this, OverviewActivity.class);
startActivity(overviewBtnIntent);
}
});
if (getIntent().hasExtra("state")) {
if (getIntent().getStringExtra("state").equals("enable")) {
overviewDone = true;
varBtn.setEnabled(true);
} else {

} else {

}
varBtn.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View view) {
Intent varbiesButtonIntent = new Intent(HomeActivity.this, VariablesActivity.class);
startActivity(varbiesButtonIntent);
Log.i("Variable Button", "Going to Variable Activity");
}
});
}
}
public class OverviewActivity extends AppCompatActivity {
public Button backBtn;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_overview);
backBtn = findViewById(R.id.ov_backButton);

String value = "";
if(checkedId != -1){
value = ((RadioButton)findViewById(checkedId)).getText().toString();
}
radioGroup.getCheckedRadioButtonId() returns -1 if there is nothing checked, -1 isn't a valid Id thus findViewById returns null.
null.getText() is a java.lang.NullPointerException
This is under the assumption that there is nothing selected and the fact that calling radioGroup.getCheckedRadioButtonId() doesn't crash only when you call getText() does it crash means your radioGroup = (RadioGroup)findViewById(R.id.RadioGroup); is correct.
The reason the OverviewActivity is created instead is due to a stack problem caused by the premature end to VariablesActivity due to the exception.

because R.id.view is the id of a View, not a TextView (check your layout xml).
You need to make that view a textview in your layout file.
try this:
public class MainActivity extends AppCompatActivity {

super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
}
public void onButtonClick(View view){
EditText e1 = view.findViewById(R.id.editText1);

According to your logcat message, I can say that your EditText object is null
the problem is caused by this line.
((EditText)findViewById(R.id.info)).getText().toString()
Make sure you have EditText with id 'info' in EditFieldClass.

New Activity crashes on startup [duplicate]

When clicking a Button to switch from the main Activity to my "ColoursGame" Activity the app crashes.
I'm still a beginner so not an expert at debugging.
The main activity code
Button colorsGame = (Button) findViewById(R.id.colours);
colorsGame.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
startActivity(new Intent(MainActivity.this, ColoursGame.class));
}
});
Manifest new activity
<activity android:name=".ColoursGame"
android:label="ColourGame"
android:theme="#style/AppTheme.NoActionBar"></activity>
ColoursGame Activity OnCreate code
public class ColoursGame extends Activity {
int livesCount = 3;
String x;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_colours_game);
Button start = (Button) findViewById(R.id.startColors);
start.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
vSwitch.showNext();
x = String.valueOf(livesCount);
lives.setText(x);
text();
textColor();
backgroundColor();
start();
}
});
}

Don't call findViewById outside of onCreate, there's no Window to call findViewById at that point.
If you still get a NullPointer, then you must have #+id/startColors in activity_colours_game.xml
Answer explanation here
Button start = (Button) findViewById(R.id.startColors);
According to the error you are trying to reach a button that doesnt exist in your activity layout file (whatever it is). Check the id of your button and make sure it is placed on the layout page that related with your "ColoursGame" Activity.

RecyclerView's onClick method crashes the app

Below is my MainActivity.java (I have removed some of unnecessary code. My main activity was a Navigation Viewer activity)
public class MainActivity extends AppCompatActivity
implements NavigationView.OnNavigationItemSelectedListener {
RecyclerView recyclerView;
RecyclerView.Adapter adapter;
RecyclerView.LayoutManager layoutManager;
ArrayList<MainStoryTile> list = new ArrayList<MainStoryTile>();
int[] image_id = { R.drawable.sample, R.drawable.sample, R.drawable.sample};
String[] name, email, mobile;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
name = getResources().getStringArray(R.array.person_name);
email = getResources().getStringArray(R.array.person_email);
mobile = getResources().getStringArray(R.array.person_mobile);
int count = 0;
for(String NAME: name){
MainStoryTile contact = new MainStoryTile(image_id[count], NAME, email[count], mobile[count]);
count++;
list.add(contact);
}
recyclerView = (RecyclerView) findViewById(R.id.recycler_view);
layoutManager = new LinearLayoutManager(this);
recyclerView.setLayoutManager(layoutManager);
recyclerView.setHasFixedSize(true);
adapter = new MainStoryAdapter(list);
recyclerView.setAdapter(adapter);
}
#Override
public void onBackPressed() {
}
#Override
public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) {
}
#Override
public boolean onOptionsItemSelected(MenuItem item) {
}
#SuppressWarnings("StatementWithEmptyBody")
#Override
public boolean onNavigationItemSelected(MenuItem item) {
return true;
}
}
Below is my Adapter class. (Note : there is an inner class)
public class MainStoryAdapter extends RecyclerView.Adapter<MainStoryAdapter.StoryViewHolder>{
ArrayList<MainStoryTile> contacts = new ArrayList<MainStoryTile>();
public MainStoryAdapter(ArrayList<MainStoryTile> contacts){
this.contacts = contacts;
}
#Override
public StoryViewHolder onCreateViewHolder(ViewGroup parent, int viewType) {
View view = LayoutInflater.from(parent.getContext()).inflate(R.layout.content_main,parent,false );
StoryViewHolder storyViewHolder = new StoryViewHolder(view);
return storyViewHolder;
}
#Override
public void onBindViewHolder(StoryViewHolder holder, int position) {
MainStoryTile CON = contacts.get(position);
holder.person_img.setImageResource(CON.getImage_id());
holder.person_name.setText(CON.getName());
holder.person_email.setText(CON.getEmail());
holder.person_mobile.setText(CON.getMobile());
}
#Override
public int getItemCount() {
return contacts.size();
}
public static class StoryViewHolder extends RecyclerView.ViewHolder implements View.OnClickListener{
ImageView person_img;
TextView person_name, person_email, person_mobile;
public StoryViewHolder(View view){
super(view);
person_img = (ImageView) view.findViewById(R.id.person_image);
person_name = (TextView) view.findViewById(R.id.person_name);
person_email = (TextView) view.findViewById(R.id.person_email);
person_mobile = (TextView) view.findViewById(R.id.person_mobile);
view.setOnClickListener(this);
}
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
Log.d("MY LOG", "sdurfhiusrhdidysdysdysdysdys r");
}
}
}
When I click on a item, my app crashes. below is error log :

Update: Even after I commented the following line in the view.setOnClickListener(this); in the MainStoryAdapter, my app still crashing when I click on an item.
Below is the project for those who like to see more > project zip version
I checked your project and you, why ever, define android:onClick="setContentView" in your content_main.xml layout for the CardView.
Remove that attribute and it works.
