How to get auto generated keys of batch insert statement? - java

I want to INSERT batch of records in a database (i.e. DB2) using JDBC batch statement and then obtain the auto generated IDs of inserted rows. How can I achieve using JDBC API?
Example Code:

The batch statement executes successfully, all rows inserted into database. But when calling getGeneratedKeys() to retrieve generated keys, it returns an empty ResultSet. Any idea, why?

I have managed to find the db2 specific solution. If the PreparedStatement object returns automatically generated keys, call DB2PreparedStatement.getDBGeneratedKeys to retrieve an array of ResultSet objects that contains the automatically generated keys.

How do I use SELECT LAST_INSERT_ID() without closing the connection [duplicate]

I want to INSERT a record in a database (which is Microsoft SQL Server in my case) using JDBC in Java. At the same time, I want to obtain the insert ID. How can I achieve this using JDBC API?
If it is an auto generated key, then you can use Statement#getGeneratedKeys() for this. You need to call it on the same Statement as the one being used for the INSERT. You first need to create the statement using Statement.RETURN_GENERATED_KEYS to notify the JDBC driver to return the keys.
Here's a basic example:

Note that you're dependent on the JDBC driver as to whether it works. Currently, most of the last versions will work, but if I am correct, Oracle JDBC driver is still somewhat troublesome with this. MySQL and DB2 already supported it for ages. PostgreSQL started to support it not long ago. I can't comment about MSSQL as I've never used it.
For Oracle, you can invoke a CallableStatement with a RETURNING clause or a SELECT CURRVAL(sequencename) (or whatever DB-specific syntax to do so) directly after the INSERT in the same transaction to obtain the last generated key. See also this answer.

I'm using SQLServer 2008, but I have a development limitation: I cannot use a new driver for it, I have to use "com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver" (I cannot use "com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDriver").
That's why the solution conn.prepareStatement(sql, Statement.RETURN_GENERATED_KEYS) threw a java.lang.AbstractMethodError for me.

Most others have suggested to use JDBC API for this, but personally, I find it quite painful to do with most drivers. When in fact, you can just use a native T-SQL feature, the OUTPUT clause:

This is the simplest solution for SQL Server as well as a few other SQL dialects (e.g. Firebird, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, where you'd use RETURNING instead of OUTPUT).

With Hibernate's NativeQuery, you need to return a ResultList instead of a SingleResult, because Hibernate modifies a native query

if you try to get a single result, which causes most databases (at least PostgreSQL) to throw a syntax error. Afterwards, you may fetch the resulting id from the list (which usually contains exactly one item).

Remember to add the connector/J to the project referenced libraries.
In my case, the connector/J version is the 5.1.42. Maybe you will have to apply some changes to the connectionPath if you want to use a more modern version of the connector/J such as with the version 8.0.28.

Usually ID that need to be reuse can be handle using a previous and separate SQL query

A better way to handle this is the RETURNING INTO clause, which uses a single, atomic statement:

I'm using SQLServer 2008, but I have a development limitation: I cannot use a new driver for it, I have to use "com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver" (I cannot use "com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDriver").
That's why the solution conn.prepareStatement(sql, Statement.RETURN_GENERATED_KEYS) threw a java.lang.AbstractMethodError for me.

Getting inserted (or existing) ids with executeBatch()

I am trying to insert some words to database and return newly inserted id or existing id if the word is already in the database.
I found that I can do this using PreparedStatement and including Statement.RETURN_GENERATED_KEYS. But PreparedStatement is terribly slow. I need to insert like 5000 words at once. Another way I could achieve it by running individual query in for loop:

executeBatch can return generated keys in the latest PgJDBC versions. See issue 195 and pull 204. You must use the prepareStatement variant that takes a String[] of returned column names.
However... take a step back here. The solution isn't loops. The solution is almost never loops.
In this case, you should almost certainly use COPY via the PgJDBC CopyManager API to COPY data into a TEMPORARY table. Then do an INSERT INTO ... SELECT ... RETURNING ... to insert the temp table's contents into the final table and return any generated fields. You can also do a SELECT to join on the temp table to return any that already exist. This is basically a bulk upsert or closely related bulk insert-if-not-exists.
If for some reason you can't do that, the next-best option is probably multi-valued INSERTs with large VALUES lists, but this requires some ugly dynamic SQL. Since you need existing values if the row already exists you'll probably need a writeable CTE too. So really, just use COPY and a query to do the table merge.

Queries returning multiple result sets

I have a MSSQL database and am running the following query:

MSSQL has this feature that can help you with your java code, in a more practical way.

The UNION ALL query allows you to combine the result sets of 2 or more "select" queries. It returns all rows (even if the row exists in more than one of the "select" statements).
