I just created and activity which contains toolbar and I put in this tool bar a tick icon at the right but when I run the app the tick icon doesn't appear in tool bar this is my class

I've constructed a simple app that consist of a FloatingActionButton and a Snackbar.
When the user clicks the FAB, the actual date should be displayed in main content of app.

I've not run your code, but it looks pretty good overall. Items are being added to the list and adapter.notifyDataSetChanged(); is being called afterwards. But one small item, you can call add directly on the adapter and it will notify regarding the change.

I would suggest changing it to:

Also be sure to add some constraints to your ConstraintLayout. If you're not sure, press "infer constraints" at the top of the design editor or use a simpler ViewGroup container. But the ones there now in the "tools:" namespace are only used by the Android Studio "design" tab. They are not meant for the actual device.

This works. I am starting my activities from the main like this.
I'm trying to show the necessary content within my toolbar (i.e. the title and back button) but for some reason is doesn't appear but yet the main content within my fragment does. What can be done to resolve this issue?

I made a BaseActivity activity which extends SherlockActivity (or ActionBarActivity if is your case)

You omitted the #Override from your derived class onCreate.
UPDATE: I'm not sure what the effects are of calling setContentView twice but that could be the problem. Separate out the code that sets up the drawer, and call that from both of the onCreate methods.

Ok here is hacky way to do this, I use it only for special kind of debug build to set properties of views in realtime (design tool).
It has advantage that you can use your child activities as usual without, special behavior that is required in different answers.

Here is a simple and fast way to do it in android studio:
Create a new activity (Navigation drawer activity) from the gallery, and name it whatever you want, android studio will create everything for you (the class and the xml files that you can customize it later)
In other activities you should extend your Navigation drawer activity, and make sure these other activities has "no action bar" in the manifests file (android:theme="#style/AppTheme.NoActionBar")
You should modify your other activities as follows:
