NPE when using JUL with SLF4J at trace level - java

I have created a sample application by following the tutorial mentioned at Creating a Basic REST Web Service using Grizzly, Jersey. I have extended the sample with logback.xml. I later found out that jersey uses java.util.logging and configured a slf4j bridge. Things are working fine but I get a unrecoverable exception when having logback level at trace and works fine when level is set at debug or higher (INFO, WARN etc).

This is bug FilterChainContext.toString crashes with NullPointerException #1959 in Grizzly.
There are two overloads of String.valueOf, with Object and char[]. (Java 8)
Because of the dangerous unbound generic in getMessage both overloads would seem applicable, however the char[] overload is chosen, probably because it is more specific.

However String.valueOf(char[]) will fail if the result of getMessage is null. I would assume a ClassCastException could happen in other cases. This can be fixed by explicitly casting the result to object or ensuring that the correct generics are infered.
You need to upgrade to a newer version of Grizzly (2.4.3).
A regression bug was filed in Nov 10, 2020 under: FilterChainContext.toString causes NullPointerException #2110 which reports fixed in 4.0.0-M2-RELEASE.

So Logback can't resolve BuferredIO and ImmediateFlush properties. I've tried to see their docs but it seems to be out-of-date as it says such properties exist + I've found e.g. for OutputStreamAppender that it doesn't have the immediateFlush property while according to the docs it should.
I can't find any info on if Logback still supports the following properties now. Could you please help and suggest some ideas on how I can achieve the same result as with the properties previously? Maybe they are somewhere else:)

Logback version is 1.1.7 (was previously before the migration)
Although ImmediateFlush is a valid configuration property for OutputStreamAppender (which RollingFileAppender extends) in the latest version of Logback (and hence is referenced in the latest docs) this was only added to OutputStreamAppender here in Feb 2017. So, immediateFlush is not a valid property of OutputStreamAppender (and hence is inaccessible from RollingFileAppender) in v1.1.7
This explains the following error:

BufferedIO is an old configuration property which is no longer supported by Logback.

In summary, you might consider upgrading to the latest Logback and just remove <BufferedIO>false</BufferedIO>. Or, continue to use v1.1.7 and remove both of these: <BufferedIO>false</BufferedIO> and <ImmediateFlush>true</ImmediateFlush>.

the latest spring-rabbit don't support encoder tag?

That's correct the org.springframework.amqp.rabbit.logback.AmqpAppender is a AppenderBase extension, not an OutputStreamAppender which supports that encoder option.
However I'm pretty sure we can add support for it and instead of raw msgBody.getBytes() call already this.encoder.encode(event).

My EvaluatorFilter doesn't work in Spring Boot + logback-access.xml

I've managed to integrate logback-access.xml with a Spring Boot on Tomcat project but for the life of me I cannot get it to respect my ch.qos.logback.core.filter.EvaluatorFilter. It definitely sees and uses my logback-access.xml file (if I change the encoder.pattern the output messages change), but seems oblivious of the filter I configure there; I don't get the effect I am looking for which is suppression of any access log messages from the /healthz URL and I don't see my System.out.println cry for help

How do I get an ch.qos.logback.core.filter.EvaluatorFilter in logback-access.xml under Spring Boot 1.4.1 to work and skip the GET /healthz requests?

The problem is that logback-access does not operate on ILoggingEvent, rather it operates on IAccessEvent.
There are JaninoEventEvaluator classes for each type of event.
The logback-access evaluator does not have the formattedMessage value.
It does however have the event value which is an instance of a IAccessEvent.
So just change your expression to the below and it should work.

There are some problems with logback version 1.1.7. Spring Boot 1.3.4 and 1.3.5 depend on this version, so 1.4.0 might also.
You can try forcing an older/newer version of logback.

You are encountering issue with the to field. See THIS bug report. You will have to wait for 1.1.8 or downgrade to version 1.1.6.
With Spring Boot you can just do the following

I changed the %F to %C, but that didn't change anything in the logs. Then I tried to set debug = "on" in the javac header in my ant file and now it's logging classname and line number.

Although this is working, it's not something I've changed before. The only thing that has changed in this project over time is the addition of other external jars. I'm not really sure how adding a duplicate/newer/older version of slf4j in another external jar would affect the logging though, any version should look for the logback file?

After checking alot of historical checkins of the build.xml file I found that we actually had debug = "on" earlier and the problem may actually have been introduced by this parameter beeing set to "off".

You should first make sure that you compile your application with debug information. If calling javac directly, then it is the -g command-line parameter. However most build tools (like maven or ant) have a specific way to provide this parameter.
You may also want to replace %F with %C, which should work without the debug information.
