I've just upgraded some projects from Java 6 to Java 8 and one class was implementing Connection interface. Now Connection interface seems to have more methods but I don't want to implement all missing methods, for example: Connection.getSchema(). Connection.getConnectionTimeOut() and so on.
How I should deal with this issue due to the fact I don't want to make my class abstract or I should implement all the missing methods?
If the Connection interface does not implement Defaultmethods for the given new Methodes you will have to implement them. If they are not used in your Applicationcontext you might be able to just implement them empty. While that will be a quick fix for your problem i would not recommend that because maybe late some other class will have to use these Functions.
You don't have any choice but to implement them.
However, if your custom implementation of Connection is not designed to be general purpose, then you could get away with dummy implementations like this:

And if you discover that you do need some of these methods, you can go back and implement them properly.
Making the class abstract won't help. That just puts the problem off to a subclass ... where you will need to implement the methods.

I have been given a Java program in which I need to fill in some code. The main idea of the program is to get used to interfaces and static methods in them. For the past 6 hours I have been watching countless of videos regarding interfaces and static interfaces and I still feel somewhat clueless to what I am supposed to do.

This is a snippet of the util interface for a program that will be relevant for having a Ook! translator and is supposed to have a lot of useful tools for other classes.
Now, my goal is to understand what I am supposed to do.
What I tried:
Considering I don't know what I need to do, I don't know what I have to code. I understand that an interface is a sort of template for classes. A static method in an interface is the part that I don't understand yet: I have been told that a static method in an interface is something that doesn't have to be implemented in other classes. In my case, the static method create() is "supposed to be a concrete instance of the util object". So, if I get this right, due to it being static, there would be one shared instance of util.
Afterwards, if a class has the prompt "Instruction instruction = util.forSymbols(Symbol.Point, Symbol.Point);" after Util.create() has been used, I would have defined instruction using util's forSymbols method.
I do not know if I am good at conveying just what I need. I per sé understand what a constructor is, I understand what an interface is, I understand what static does, but I don't understand what I have to insert into the create() method. Heck, I don't even want a direct code solution to my problem, I just want to understand what I am supposed to code.
That being said, if anyone could give me an example of an interface working in a similar fashion as my code above that makes it clear just what exactly the static part in an interface does aswell as help me out with my describes issues, I would be tremendously thankful. Also, I hope that my issue description is alright.

No, the interface can't keep state, so there isn't anywhere for the shared instance to hang out. This is not a way to implement a singleton. It must be a factory method. I think adding a method like this is confusing and probably a bad idea because it ties together the interface and the implementation in an inflexible way. you're expected to create something that implements Util, so there is going to be a constructor call for that class implementing Util. Otherwise it's not clear.
Another sign this is a bad idea is obviously Util doesn't have any instance methods so isn't usable as an object; either a) there is no state and creating an object is pointless or b) the object returned has to be cast to something else to be useful. Casts are bad, for the most part; they mean we're not benefiting from using the type system.
An interface is like a mask an object wears to keep users of it from seeing anything on it except what is on the interface. But allowing static methods is kind of a bolted-on feature that doesn't have much to do with interfaces (except that classes that implement the interface can call them without having to reference the interface).
Originally in Java you could put static methods only in classes, not in interfaces. There was an idea of a utility class, which was just a dumping ground for people to put static methods, and which didn't have any purpose as a class otherwise. Then there was a change to the language so you can put static methods on interfaces and not have to have a class involved. That's all putting static methods on an interface buys you, you can add only static methods because there is no mutable state allowed.
These methods outlined for you should all be things you can implement with only passed in arguments and local variables, without keeping any state outside of the scope of the method implementation.
I've tried to give you some idea of what is possible and what isn't, once that is clear you can ask your instructor some more focused questions about what you need to do.
I agree with Nathan Hughes. This an ill-conceived design, on the face of it.
But to cut to the chase, here is an example of you could complete that static method:

Reviewing this we can immediately see one of the problems with the interface design. We have hard-wired a specific implementation class into the interface. That is most likely a bad idea.
Could we do any better? Well ... maybe ...
The Java SE class libraries have a concept of a Java Service Provider Interface or SPI. An SPI allows different providers to be selected depending on what is available at runtime, and so on. The idea is that SPI code does a runtime classpath search looking for all classes that implement the SPI (e.g. your Util). Then it selects the "best" according to (typically) runtime configurable criteria.
That logic would be implemented in your create method. The method would then instantiate the chosen class reflectively and return the instance. In its simplest form (ignoring the classpath search aspect) it might be something like this:

In this illustration are getting a classname from the system properties. It could be set by running the application with a -D option; e.g. -Dyourapp.utilclass=yourapp.OookUtil.
The above code needs some exception handling ... which I will leave for you to figure out.
Maybe that is what your instructor is getting at. But if so, he or she should have explained more clearly what was expected.
In Java 8, we can have default implementations for methods in interfaces, in addition to declarations which need to be implemented in the concrete classes.
Is it a good design or best practice to have default methods in an interface, or did Java 8 come-up with that only to provide more support on older APIs? Should we start with using default methods in new Java 8 projects?

Prior java8, you were looking towards versioned capabilities when talking about "reasonable" ways of extending interfaces:
You have something like:
interface Capability ...
interface AppleDealer {
List<Apples> getApples();
}
and in order to retrieve an AppleDealer, there is some central service like
public <T> T getCapability (Class<T> type);
So your client code would be doing:
AppleDealer dealer = service.getCapability(AppleDealer.class);
When the need for another method comes up, you go:
interface AppleDealerV2 extends AppleDealer { ...
And clients that want V2, just do a getCapability(AppleDealerV2.class) call. Those that don't care don't have to modify their code!
Please note: of course, this only works for extending interfaces. You can't use this approach neither to change signatures nor to remove methods in existing interfaces.
Thus: just adding a new method to an interface; and having default to implement that method right there; without breaking any existing client code is a huge step forward!
Meaning: why wouldn't you use default methods on existing interfaces? Existing code will not care. It doesn't know about the new defaulted methods.
Default method in Interface has some limitations. You can not have data variables in Interface. In general the reason default methods were added for the following reason. Say in your previous version you wrote a class that implements an interface "A".In your next version you decided that it would be good idea to add a method to your interface "A". But you can not do so since any class that implements "A" now will not have that extra method and thus will not compile. This would be a MAJOR backwards compatibility breakdown. So in Java 8 you can add a default method implementation into interface so all classes that implemented old version of "A" will not be broken but will fall back on default implementation. So use this feature sparingly, only if indeed you need to expand your existing interface.
In earlier java versions it wasnt possible beacuase you had abstract classes to use concrete and declared methods only but.
Java 8 introduces “Default Method” or (Defender methods) new feature, which allows developer to add new methods to the interfaces without breaking the existing implementation of these interface. It provides flexibility to allow interface define implementation which will use as default in the situation where a concrete class fails to provide an implementation for that method.
Let consider small example to understand how it works:

Why Defaut Method?
Reengineering an existing JDK framework is always very complex. Modify one interface in JDK framework breaks all classes that extends the interface which means that adding any new method could break millions of lines of code. Therefore, default methods have introduced as a mechanism to extending interfaces in a backward compatible way.
NOTE:
However we can achive this backward compatability.but its always recommended to use interfaces with delarations only that is what they are best used for.
For simple example if You have an interface Human_behaviour you can utilize all the actions of this interface like to_Walk();
to_Eat() ,to_Love(),to_Fight() say for example in every implementing class in a unique way for every human object.Like
One Human can Fight using Swords and another Object using guns and so forth.
Thus Interface is a blessing but may always be used as per the need.
Hi I'm implementing a given design in java. Basically I have an abstract class which is called base and I have a number of concrete classes which are extending Base and implementing an interface from a different package. Each concrete class will be implementing a different interface. Now these interfaces contain both event-based and non event-based method signatures in them. My question here is; I'm only expected to implement non-event based methods in my concrete classes, however because of the implements keyword java forces me to insert an auto generated method body, which is basically return null. They might be implementing those event based methods later on but not at the moment. What would be an appropriate way to let the API user know that these methods do not contain an implementation. Here are my thoughts;
Use deprecated keyword
Create an exception class and throw that exception inside of the method and let the API user handle it.
I do not have the option of making changes to the existing architecture. Any idea really appreciated. Thank you.
According to Oracle, the reasons to deprecate an API include
It is insecure, buggy, or highly inefficient
It is going away in a future release
It encourages bad coding practices
neither of which actually fits your case.
Personally, I would favor throwing an UnsupportedOperationException which is already provided by the Standard Library in order to
indicate that the requested operation is not supported.
To me, this sounds more like what you actually want.
You can create your own interface which lists all the method you want users of your component to be able to access. Make this the only interface they use and additional public methods will not be visible.
Option (2) is good, but as you are following interfaces you'll want unchecked exceptions. And document the methods as unimplemented.
Deprecated implies a history, i.e., it works but should no longer be used. Since you are explicitly stating that the methods do not work, marking as deprecated will not prevent use nor indicate that the methods are unimplemented.
I would suggest use some mix bag of design patterns. That will help you solve this problem efficiently and make the code maintainable as well.
Based on my knowledge, you can use the Abstract Factory pattern here. See the design sketch below in the figure.
Method1 and method2 in subclass1 and subclass2 are the ones which are supposed to be exposed while method3 and method4 in subclass1 and subclass2 are the ones which we don't want to expose.
Create a Genericsubclass interface and create some methods in this interface depending upon the nature of methods you have in subclasses. For ex: i have create one method in this interface called nonEventbasedmethod1
Create a factory corresponding to every sub class and each factory will implement the GenericSubclass interface. Then implementation of nonEventbasedmethod1 method in subclass1Factory would be some thing like

and implementation of nonEventbasedmethod1 method in subclass2Factory would be some thing like
nonEventbasedmethod1(){
subclass2.method3();
}
Then create a SubclassAbstract Factory which will return one of the subclass factories and then without worrying about which factory has been returned (that decision has already been taken in SubclassAbstractFactory before returning the appropriate factory) simply call the desired method from GenericSubclass interface and underneath one of the methods from the subclass1 or subclass2 will be invoked.

If you plain to throw an exception for "NotSupported" or "NotImplemented" Exception - consider the exception of NotImplementedException (at org.apache.commons).
However, I would reconsider to revisit your design and see if you can avoid having this - maybe you need to define another interface, which will hold the methods that are always implemented, and extend it in another interface (or provide an interface with no extension to the previous one) for the methods you not always implement.
If I have an interface with a few methods. Sometimes I need to create a new implementation of the interface which wraps another instance of the interface and delegates most of the methods to the wrapped instance. Then I would change a couple of the implementations, maybe not delegating them.
A classic example would be the Collections.unmodifiableXXX() methods in the JDK which block access to the modification methods.
Does IntelliJ have any code assistance that will generate a delegate implementation of the interface and then I can just tweak a couple of methods?

I want to solidify my understanding of the "coding to interface" concept. As I understand it, one creates interfaces to delineate expected functionality, and then implements these "contracts" in concrete classes. To use the interface one can simply call the methods on an instance of the concrete class.
The obvious benefit is knowing of the functionality provided by the concrete class, irrespective of its specific implementation.
Based on the above:
Are there any fallacies in my understanding of "coding to interfaces"?

Just one possible correction:
To use the interface one can simply call the methods on an instance of the concrete class.
One would call the methods on a reference of the type interface, which happens to use the concrete class as implementation:
List<String> l = new ArrayList<String>();
l.add("foo");
l.add("bar");
If you decided to switch to another List implementation, the client code works without change:
List<String> l = new LinkedList<String>();
This is especially useful for hiding implementation details, auto generating proxies, etc.
You'll find that frameworks like spring and guice encourage programming to an interface. It's the basis for ideas like aspect-oriented programming, auto generated proxies for transaction management, etc.
Your understanding seems to be right on. Your co-worker just swung by your desk and has all the latest pics of the christmas party starring your drunk boss loaded onto his thumbdrive. Your co-worker and you do not think twice about how this thumbdrive works, to you its a black box but you know it works because of the USB interface.
It doesn't matter whether it's a SanDisk or a Titanium (not even sure that is a brand), size / color don't matter either. In fact, the only thing that matters is that it is not broken (readable) and that it plugs into USB.
Your USB thumbdrive abides by a contract, it is essentially an interface. One can assume it fulfills some very basic duties:

Ari, I think you already have a solid understanding (from what it sounds like) about how interfaces work.
The main advantage is that the use of an interface loosely couples a class with it's dependencies. You can then change a class, or implement a new concrete interface implementation without ever having to change the classes which depend on it.
To use the interface one can simply call the methods on an instance of the concrete class.
Typically you would have a variable typed to the interface type, thus allowing only access to the methods defined in the interface.

Sort of. Most importantly, it allows you to write APIs that take parameters with interface types. Users of the API can then pass in their own classes (which implement those interfaces) and you code will work on those classes even though they didn't exist yet when it was written (such as java.util.Arrays.sort() being able to sort anything that implements Comparable or comes with a suitable Comparator).
From a design perspective, interfaces allow/enforce a clear separation between API contracts and implementation details.
The aim of coding against interfaces is to decouple your code from the concrete implementation in use. That is, your code will not make assumptions about the concrete type, only the interface. Consequently, the concrete implementation can be exchanged without needing to adjust your code.
You didn't list the part about how you get an implementation of the interface, which is important. If you explicitly instantiate the implementing class with a constructor then your code is tied to that implementation. You can use a factory to get an instance for you but then you're as tied to the factory as you were before to the implementing class. Your third alternative is to use dependency injection, which is having a factory plug the implementing object into the object that uses it, in which case you escape having the class that uses the object being tied to the implementing class or to a factory.
I think you may have hinted at this, but I believe one of the biggest benefits of coding to an interface is that you are breaking dependency on concrete implementation. You can achieve loose coupling and make it easier to switch out specific implementations without changing much code. If you are just learning, I would take a look at various design patterns and how they solve problems by coding to interfaces. Reading the book Head First: Design Patterns really helped things click for me.

The only sort of mutation i see in your thinking is this - You're going to call out expected contracts, not expected functionality. The functionality is implemented in the concrete classes. The interface only states that you will be able to call something that implements the interface with the expected method signatures. Functionality is hidden from the calling object.
This will allow you to stretch your thinking into polymorphism as follows.
