App crashing in the part of Grid layout declaration - java

Class & XML are not the same
public void r(View view)
{
LinearLayout linearLayout=findViewById(R.id.playAgain);
linearLayout.setVisibility(View.INVISIBLE);
activePLayer=0 ;
for(int i=0;i<9;i++)
{
gameState[i]=2;
}
Log.i("Success","0");
//Till this part it's working
GridLayout gridL = findViewById(R.id.gl);
Log.i("Success","0");
//This log don't show up
for(int i=0;i<gridL.getChildCount();i++)
{
((ImageView)gridL.getChildAt(i)).setImageResource(0);
}
}
I want to reset my Connect-3 game made in a constraint layout to play it again but my app crashes at the point of declaration of GridLayout.
Any suggestions ?

Change from
GridLayout gridLayout = findViewById(R.id.gridLayout);
to
androidx.gridlayout.widget.GridLayout gridLayout = findViewById(R.id.gridLayout);

it is written in your stack trace,
java.lang.ClassCastException: android.support.v7.widget.GridLayout cannot be cast to android.widget.GridLayout
your Class & XML are not the same. You need to make sure that the import is correct
to fix this, just switch the current import with:
import android.support.v7.widget.GridLayout;

Closed 3 years ago.
So i'm getting " on a null object reference" on my l1 and have no idea how to fix it after googling. I've tried multiple coding discords but they say it's because of the depreciated code but when I googled it shows that the depreciated code still works and the youtube tutorial I was following for it worked fine .
MainActivity -
package com.getcontacts;
import android.database.Cursor;
import android.provider.ContactsContract;
import android.support.v7.app.AppCompatActivity;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.view.View;
import android.widget.ListView;
import android.widget.SimpleCursorAdapter;
public class MainActivity extends AppCompatActivity {
ListView l1;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
l1 = findViewById(R.id.listView);
}
public void get(View v) {
Cursor cursor = getContentResolver().query(ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Phone.CONTENT_URI,null,null,null,null);
startManagingCursor(cursor);
String[] from = {ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Phone.DISPLAY_NAME, ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Phone.NUMBER,
ContactsContract.CommonDataKinds.Phone._ID};
int[] to = {android.R.id.text1,android.R.id.text2};
SimpleCursorAdapter simpleCursorAdapter = new SimpleCursorAdapter(this,android.R.layout.simple_list_item_2,cursor,from,to,1);
l1.setAdapter(simpleCursorAdapter);
l1.setChoiceMode(ListView.CHOICE_MODE_MULTIPLE);
}
}
and this is the error -

apparently this : findViewById(R.id.listView); returns null please double check your tags and wether this element actually exists at the time of the call
Check the l1 you are trying to reference in your layout file to ensure you provided the id and spelled it exactly as you are calling it in the Java.

.setBackgroundResource(0) crashing my app

In app, I allocate resources to button in GridLayout.
if(fill[tappedButtonLocation] == 2 && !gameOver) {
fill[tappedButtonLocation] = activePlayer;
if (activePlayer == 0) {
tappedButton.setBackgroundResource(R.drawable.circle_yellow);
activePlayer = 1;
} else {
tappedButton.setBackgroundResource(R.drawable.circle_yelp);
activePlayer = 0;
}
}
Then I want to remove the resources but it crash the app.
GridLayout gridLayout = findViewById(R.id.gridLayout);
for(int i=0; i<gridLayout.getChildCount();i++){
((Button) gridLayout.getChildAt(i)).setBackgroundResource(0);
}
Allocated resource is
<shape xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:shape="oval">
<solid android:color="#FFFC00"> </solid>
<size android:height="120dp"
android:width="120dp"> </size>
</shape>

How can I remove the resource from GridView.
Actually I want to reset the tic-toc-toe game after clicking on play again button.
The problem seems to be a ClassCastException as noted in the stacktrace:
Caused by: java.lang.ClassCastException: android.support.v7.widget.GridLayout cannot be cast to android.widget.GridLayout
Please check your imports in the class, where you do the following:
GridLayout gridLayout = findViewById(R.id.gridLayout);
Change this:
import android.widget.GridLayout;
to:
import android.support.v7.widget.GridLayout;

java.lang.IllegalStateException: Could not execute method for android:onClick when trying to click a button

When I click the buttons on my page, I get an "IllegalStateException" in my logcat. I'm new at Java development, so I don't really know if it's something simple that i'm doing wrong. All I'm trying to do is get the button to open the activity. It worked fine until i started playing with the fragments etc for the layout.

Crash after Button Click: Could not execute method for android:onClick

I've been searching everywhere for a solution, but ultimately didn't succeed. The Program is supposed to read what's in the TextView (id=textField), then it should display the text with Log.i
Here is MainActivity.java
package quotebook.theoneandonly.com.buttons;
import android.support.v7.app.AppCompatActivity;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.util.Log;
import android.view.View;
import android.widget.EditText;
public class MainActivity extends AppCompatActivity {
public void clickfunction(View view) {
EditText myTextField = ((EditText) findViewById(R.id.textField));
Log.i("textField Value", myTextField.getText().toString());
}
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
}
}
This is the error message I get after I click on the Button:

'textField' is TextView's ID. You are using it on EditText.
Check you xml again and change the ID of EditText in MainActivity.
Error log says, TextView cannot be cast to EditText.
Sorry , not enough credits to comment.
Perhaps you are trying to cast to the wrong object here. It should be a TextView and not an EditView:
EditText myTextField = ((EditText) findViewById(R.id.textField));
Should be:
TextView myTextField = ((TextView) findViewById(R.id.textField));
The relevant error message in this case is the last one in the stack trace:
Caused by: java.lang.ClassCastException: android.support.v7.widget.AppCompatTextView cannot be cast to android.widget.EditText
it should be like >
EditText myTextField = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.textField);
remove "()" before casting edit text and end of the line also...i think that's all..problem solved!

public void playAgainClicked(View view) {
LinearLayout layout = (LinearLayout) findViewById(R.id.playAgainLayout);
layout.setVisibility(View.INVISIBLE);
activePlayer = 0;
for (int i = 0; i < gameState.length; i++) {
gameState[i] = 2;
}
GridLayout gridLayout = (GridLayout) findViewById(R.id.mainGrid);
for (int i = 0; i < gridLayout.getChildCount(); i++) {
((ImageView) gridLayout.getChildAt(i)).setImageResource(0);
}
}
Gist with a full java file
I have tried to double check everything I can, still nothing.
After debugging I found out that exactly this line of code causes an error.
GridLayout gridLayout = (GridLayout) findViewById(R.id.mainGrid);
GridLayout in XML and Activity are different.
You use android.widget.GridLayout and android.support.v7.widget.GridLayout and try to cast them.
