So I am kind of at a dead end here. Have been troubleshooting for a half a day now. Using Hibernate JPA persistence in a Java application.

I've tried different Hibernate versions but in all cases have gotten the same error.
Problem occurs when this statement is executed
em = Persistence.createEntityManagerFactory(persistenceUnitName).createEntityManager();
I've stumbled upon the same problem and I found a similar solution.
I was using log4j-core 2.11.1 and got the same error when running the application from the jar. I've followed your solution and changed the verison to log4j-core 2.8.2.
After that I've still got an error, but this time it was a lack of dependeny: apparently it was missing one of the "com.fasterxml.jackson.core" package classes. So I've added the dependency (version 2.9.6) and now it's running.
Hope this helps some one because it was a very frustrating error.
After a great deal of trial and error I isolated the issue to some type of library conflict with log4j. Don't ask me what the exact problem was but changing the versions of one of the two made the problem go away. Did not have the time to perform any sort of detailed analysis on the underlying reason.

I've run mvn clean compile assembly:single, it's output a CucumberSelenium-1.0-SNAPSHOT-jar-with-dependencies.jar file, but it wont runs.
I just came across a similar issue and, despite trying the ubiquitous
java -cp . org.example.Main
(while on current directory being where the Main.class is), I kept getting this dreaded
"Error: Could not find or load main class"
I eventually resorted to comparing the actual command with parameters invoked by IntelliJ (on IntelliJ IDEA's debug log) with mine, and discovered that the following solves the issue:
java -cp C:\Users\WebViwer\IdeaProjects\MyProj\target\classes org.example.Main
I am guessing that once the fully qualified class name is specified, the current directory (where the class resides) is no longer valid as a classpath: Only the top level classes directory should be specified (in this org.example, 2 levels up).
You have a a few problems going on.
The maven-assembly-plugin should not be a in the dependencies section. It is not a dependency used by the runtime code of your project.
Your step definitions, feature files and glue code located in src/test are not included in the jar file build by the assembly plugin.
Your test scoped dependencies will also not be included by the assembly plugin either.
You must configure the containerDescriptorHandler of the assembly plugin with metaInf-services or the plugin will not merge files in META-INF/services correctly.
You can verify most of these by opening the generated jar file (it's a .zip file in disguise).
My project run from Intellij with no problem.
When running tests in Intelij you are using the test scope, the jar file only includes runtime scoped code.
For a more comparable test you must create a new run configuration that invokes the main method.

It appears that you are relatively new to Java and Maven. It would be prudent to follow a proper course first rather than tutorials. You are missing fundamental knowledge that is generally not taught in tutorials.

It's also prudent to consider why you are doing this.
Tests will typically change as quickly as the source code they are testing does. Manually distribution of jar files won't keep up with this.
This means it's generally better to integrate the tests and the test source code into the automated build pipeline of the project they test.
This also means that you don't need to distribute your tests as a jar. Rather you should expect (and possibly train) people to use Maven, GIT and Java.
I'm trying to upgrade an application to Java 11.0.2, from Java 8. So those are my very first steps with Jigsaw modules!

Eclipse uses its own compiler which is even stricter than javac in following the specs. You are requiring different Modules/Jars in your module-info which are all using the package com.google.inject. This is some kind of a split package situation which is not allowed in the JPMS spec. AFAIK javac only yields an error if there are actual classes in the same packages of different moduls, but the eclipse compiler is even more picky here.
There are some solutions out there for solving split package problems. If you don't find a newer version of the libs where the problem is solved (which unfortunately is not very likely for most dependencies today) you could f.e. merge the modules into one custom modules, but this is not a perfect solution of course.

I can reproduce the error on my machine (same Eclipse version, OpenJDK 11), works fine on Apache NetBeans IDE 10.0.
Seems to be a bug in Eclipse, you should file it here. You already have a minimal project that reproduces the error, that helps a lot.

Better way to deal with this kind of problem by just go to dependencies hierarchy in pom.xml, where you can find duplicate jar, sometimes it could be difficult to find duplicate jar as jar itself have pom dependencies and "Dependencies hierarchy" will help you to deal with maven problem

I am currently trying to use the AWS SDK (specifically the s3 SDK) in my project but keep getting the exception
java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError:com/amazonaws/services/s3/AmazonS3ClientBuilder
I have imported the SDK into my project using maven as shown in the SDK documentation here. The code that I am running that causes this to occur is
AmazonS3 amazonS3 = AmazonS3ClientBuilder.standard().withRegion(Regions.EU_WEST_1).build();
I suspected the issue may have been occurring due to a conflict in Jackson versions between the version required by the AWS SDK and the version I was importing myself for use else where in the project although changing this does not seem to have resolved the issue. I think, I've found a solution / workaround to this issue. Thanks to suggestions from #DaveMaple I tried building the app through the command line and deploying the .war manually which seems to have worked.
According to this question IntelliJ IDEA uses its own build process and not Mavens. This leads me to believe that the issue was with IntelliJ's build process and nothing to do with AWS SDK or Maven. To work around this issue I configured IntelliJ to not use its own build process but instead to use Maven and then to deploy the resulting .war. Explanation on how to do this can be found here.
When I run in Eclipse, Maven and TestNG work fine and pass, but when I run in Jenkins, the following failure message appears:

Please help -- I don't know what's wrong with my plugin or dependencies.
The first possible problem I see: you define the property: testng.version, set the value to: 6.9.10, but then ignore the testng.version property later in your pom.xml, and set the <version> of TestNG to: 6.8.
Try changing the definition of your TestNG <dependency> from what you curently have:

So that the definition is defined as follows:

I must admit this JUnit Test has been a nightmare till now, I have invested some days, searching the Internet but everything I tried did not work.
The Error I have is following:
SCHWERWIEGEND: Exception while invoking class org.glassfish.persistence.jpa.JPADeployer prepare method
java.lang.RuntimeException: Invalid resource : jdbc/sample__pm
The jdbc/sample__pm does not exist but the jdbc/sample in the persistance.xml does.
As I said I have already searched for this problem but I cound not find a solution to the problem.
I guess the problem is with the pom.xml, but don't know how to fix it.

I had the same problem, and after losing lot's of time I got it right. I now can run my tests with my connection pool.
This problem is resulted by series of small maven code generation bugs in Netbeans.
Bellow are a serie of steps for you to check
1 - Your pom.xml must have the path , plugin and dependencies configured for glassfish-embedded-static-shell, as follow:
Add in the properties at the top of your pom the path to your glassfish instalation folder(here is mine):

2 - Your glassfish-resources... it's silly, but the jndi-name of your jdbc resource must have the prefix java:app/ so, add it as sample bellow(just the resource, the connection pool can have any name):
*Just remembering the name of your jdbc-resource in glassfish will not have the prefix java:app, e.g.: my jdbc-resource in glassfish is just ShrewdPCPool
3 - Third and the silliest, when deploying the embedded glassfish, the auto generated script of Netbeans doen't include /src/main/resources/setup in the class path, so, the simple solution is to make a copy of your glassfish-resources.xml para /src/main/resources/META-INF/ or if you are patient enough change the script.
Dont forget to clean, and after build with dependencies before you run your tests!
