I need to use jackson to handle some JSON in my code. I wrote a simple test class to get it working.

I placed jackson-databind-2.9.9.1.jar in /dirwherejarresides/jdk/jre/lib/ext.
I am able to compile the class with no issues, and produce Test.class.

However, I can't seem to get java find the jar & execute the class.

What do I need to do to get java to see the jar?
Jackson library is split into several jar-modules that declare dependencies between each other. For example: jackson-databind depends on jackson-annotations and jackson-core.
The jackson-databind-*.jar does not actually contain a class for JsonView annotation that you get the exception about. It is placed in the jackson-annotations-*.jar file. But to be able to parse a JSON with Jackson you will definitely need jackson-core-*.jar as well.
Btw, your second way to pass a class path is more correct, you need to list all jar-files your class depends on in the -cp parameter split by colon on the Unix/Linux systems. E.g.
$ java -cp ".:/pathtojackson/jackson-databind-2.9.9.1.jar:/pathtojackson/jackson-core-2.9.9.jar:/pathtojackson/jackson-annotations-2.9.9.jar" Test

It is complaining about annotation/JsonView and seems like it found jackson data-bind. Since you are not using maven, I suspect jackson-core which is a transitive dependency of data-bind, is not injected.
Try adding jackson-core into your classpath.
Often ClassNotFoundException are a side effect of you having the two of the same packages with different versions. Print out a dependency tree and see that there is not two versions of the same dependency loaded.

Paths are case sensitive in Ubuntu, GATEFiles is different from GATEFILES. Since gate.SimpleAnnotation is in gate.jar, I bet that your classpath should be:
-cp 'bin/:../GATEFiles/lib/:../GATEFiles/bin/gate.jar:lib/*'
Disclaimer: I haven't used this plugin, I don't know if the other parts of the classpath are correct.
In general, you can "debug" by trying
ls ../GATEFiles/bin/
to see if there is a gate.jar file.
It's hard to know, but most likely the class it cannot find is in the gate.jar file, and it is either not on the new machine, or is not in the correct place on the new machine.
To expand slightly: Classes are found in a couple of places, but you specify a gate.jar on the classpath of the command line (that's what the -cp designates), so I'm guessing it's there. Since java can't find it, I'm guessing further that the necessary jar file is not where it needs to be for the Java runtime to find it.
For Linux and OSX use '/' and ':' , try this call .. it worked for me

I am attempting to make a simple wrapper around an API connection in Java. I am using the org.apache.http library to do this.
I have downloaded the following jar files:
org.apache.http httpclient saved as ./org.apache.httpclient.jar
org.apache.http httpcore saved as ./org.apache.httpcore.jar
I can then successfully compile the file with:
$ javac -cp "./org.apache.httpclient.jar:./org.apache.httpcore.jar" Api.java
However when running it with $ java Api I receive:

[It turned out the issue was with how code was being run after compilation; the code has been removed to avoid distracting from the actual problem and solution]
I can't see why the system has a problem finding the HttpEntity interface when it finds other imports successfully, and can compile. If I remove any of the import lines compilation fails with unknown symbol errors.
-cp should contain the directory where you classes are, for example:
java -cp "./org.apache.httpclient.jar:./org.apache.httpcore.jar:." Api
Assuming that your Api.class is in the current directory. (replace : by ; as classpath separator if your are on a windows system)
Have you tried running the java with '-classpath'. While compiling you are giving the classpath, so you need to add the classpath option for running the class file as well.

Please check if you have httpcore jar. I got rid of this error, after adding httpcore-4.2.jar to my lib.

The error is java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError
Now the Obvious reason of NoClassDefFoundError is that a particular class is not available in Classpath, so we need to add that into Classpath or we need to check why it’s not available in Classpath if we are expecting it to be.

According to the official documentation, the class that you seek is only in httpcore since 4.1. You'll want to pull a new JAR.

In your case it seems to br you missing out some necessory jar files to include in your project

Now what I have done so far:
I created a libs folder in my project folder and added the Jsoup.jar there. Then in eclipse I click properties, add external Jar and added it. I see the referenced library.
But the issue still persist. I dont get compilation errors. So this is a runtime issue. Appreciate the help.

I have found the following
If I compile using
javac -classpath /path/to/jsoup.jar myclass.java
and then
java -classpath /path/to/jsoup.jar myclass
It runs perfect.
Now. This is not working for me because I am going to use my application on a computer that does not have Jsoup. So how to I resolve this runtime issue?
Go to Run configurations... menu and check classpath for Run task. It looks like you add library for Compilation step, but it doesn't set at Run step.

I dove into the issue and found that this dependency is needed for application container. So you just need to add this library to classpath of your app server. If you use Tomcat, just put the library to the %CATALINA_HOME%\lib directory.
