How to organize java swing application architecture? - java

I am making a small project in Java. By design, the application will be similar to QTranslate - it is a GUI for various translator APIs. The application will have 1 main form, the translator itself and several auxiliary forms (Settings, language selection, saved words, etc.).
The moment is not clear how to implement the interaction of auxiliary forms with the main form? Each auxiliary form will affect the main form. For example, when choosing a language, a new button will be added to the main form. Or when changing the settings, the hot keys will change. Each form is a separate class. Do I understand correctly that the only way to implement this is to make the main form class static and access it from other non-static classes of auxiliary forms?

Making the main form class static would not be the appropriate OOP way i suppose. Instead I would pass your main container to the Constructor of your auxiliary form class, which would be more the OOP way.

This just creates a parent frame with a button which opens a child frame with a button. If you click on the button in the child frame it changes the background colour of the parent frame.

How do i switch between screens in swing

This has been asked before but I would like clarification, I'm new to java coding (sort of, started coding last month) and would like to know simply how can I switch between UIs in one JFrame, Picture this, a settings menu, How do I make it in one JFrame window instead of just make a new window with all the settings, If you don't get it, ask for clarification.
You can implement a frame (JFrame) and, for example, two panels (JPanel). Initially you embed panel A inside frame, when you want to show panel B then call the method showPanelB()

JFrame appears blank after swapping JFrames twice (using Intellij GUI designer)

I'm relatively new to Java Swing in general and decided to use Intellij's GUI Designer. For those not familiar with it, Intellij creates 2 files for each GUI "screen". One is the "design" in the form of a .form file where you drag and drop UI components, and one is the "controller".
Anyway, I'm doing a 5-step questionnaire implemented on Java Swing. The first part asks the user what is their favourite fruit, and when a choice button is clicked, the choice is saved and the next JFrame appears with the next question and so on. JFrame1 transitioning to JFrame2 worked fine, and all UI components were shown. However, when I tried to transition from JFrame2 to JFrame3, JFrame3 showed up blank instead.
I've tried to call .pack() before setVisible(true), and then calling .toFront() after that, but that didn't help.
Below shows a section of my code. JFrame1, 2, and 3 all use the same exact code in its constructors and calling of the next JFrame. JFrame1 only differs by a single line which will be stated later in the code.

GUI won't open when button pressed (Java)

I am trying to open a GUI from my main GUI by pressing a button. When the button is pressed, this is executed:

This doesn't open the WorkloadFactor GUI. I am confused by this because I have other GUIs that open this way without issue.
WorkloadFactor class works fine when I run it by itself but won't open when it is called by my main GUI. Below is my class without imports and stuff:

I have tried arranging things in so many ways, putting everything in the constructor and other changes but can't seem to find a reason why instantiating this WorkloadFactor class elsewhere and setting it visible won't work.
Does it have something to do with setContentPane(contentPane) vs contentPane.add(xxxx) and returning it?

To be blunt, this won't display anything. Please understand that WorkloadFactor extends JPanel and like all non-top level components must be placed into a container that is ultimately held by a top-level window in order to be displayed. Look at how you display it in your main method -- you first put it into a JFrame, and then display that JFrame. You must do the same thing if you want to display it on button press -- you need to put it into a JPanel or other container that is held by a JFrame or JDialog, or JOptionPane.
Make sure that you have properly registered the button on your main GUI which opens WorkLoadFactor GUI to an action listener.
Since you have not included code from your main GUI I can't confirm this is the issue. However it is a commonly overlooked issue.
Heres some suggestions from the Java documentation tutorials:
"Problem: I'm trying to handle certain events from a component, but the component isn't generating the events it should.
First, make sure you registered the right kind of listener to detect the events. See whether another kind of listener might detect the kind of events you need.
Make sure you registered the listener on the right object.

Make a JFrame and add a JButton in it than add action listener in button and add this code in it like this:

notify the caller class something has happened

Say, you have a subclass of JFrame, and use it to create your own custom JFrame. In this class (we'll call it mainFrame), we create a reference to another custom JFrame class (we'll call this one sidePanel).
In sidePanel, you have different buttons, radio buttons,..
My question is, is there a way to notify mainFrame the user presses on a button?
I've created a (untested) example of what I mean:

To notify mainFrame of an event, the SidePanel instance (really bad name for a Frame) must have a reference to mainFrame. Pass mainFrame as an argument of the SidePanel constructor, and callback mainFrame from the actionPerformed method in SidePanel:

and in SidePanel:

This tightly couples both classes though. A way to decouple them is to make the SidePanel object accept listeners for custom events, and to fire such an event when the button is clicked. The mainFrame would construct the SidePanel instance, and add itself (or an inner anonymous class instance) as a listener to the sidePanel.

One JFrame opening another

I have a JFrame and JPanel full of Jsomethings with an actionlistener. When the user clicks an object I want to open another JFrame. Here is what I did:

(RejectApp calls a new JFrame.) So another JFrame opens on the screen with more options. It works OK (so far), but I want to know is this standard? I mean calling the main method like this?
Another question is, without using a cardlayout (which I don't want to use), is the best way to handle multiple panels, by doing this sort of thing?
I would change a few things. First off, usually an application has one JFrame and then if it needs to show another window does so as a modal or non-modal dialog such as can be obtained with a JDialog or JOptionPane. Having said that, it's even more common to have one JFrame and swap "views" in the JFrame -- swap contentPanes or other large panels via a CardLayout as this would mimic the behavior of many gui programs we all currently use.
Personally, I also try to gear my GUI creation towards creating a JPanel or JComponent rather than towards creating a top-level window. This way if I want to display the GUI as a stand alone app, a dialog, or an applet I can pop it into the contentPane of a JFrame or JDialog or JApplet respectively, or if as an inner panel of a more complex GUI, then insert it there, or in an application with a swapping view, then as a card in a CardLayout as noted above. The bottom line is I feel that this structure gives you the developer a lot more options in how you can use this GUI.
Also, I would avoid calling another class's main as you're doing (assuming this is the public static void main method) as you lose all benefits of OOPs. You also seem to be trying to call a static method in a non-static way (assuming I understand your program structure correctly).
For your second question, it begs a question of my own: why do you not want to use CardLayout?

Another simple Layout-Manager is the BorderLayout, it´s the default Layout-Manager of the JFrame class.
