Also, there's test coverage for this in optaplanner repo itself, in org.optaplanner.spring.boot.autoconfigure.OptaPlannerAutoConfigurationTest#singletonSolverFactory.
Maybe in your case there's a problem with the generic types? Try autowiring without the generic types first. Let us know here if that was the problem.
I have some tests that were failing with Error creating bean with name 'entityManagerFactory' this answer solved it for me https://stackoverflow.com/a/47504698/6945345 but broke my Controller test with Could not instantiate JAXBContext for class [class org.springframework.hateoas.PagedResources]: Implementation of JAXB-API has not been found on module path or classpath. This is because I think #WebMvcTest does not pick up the JAXB-API. What should I do to resolve this the best way?

When I start Spring Boot application on embedded Tomcat and something fails during startup (for instance there is no connection to DB or Liquibase update fails or circular dependency found, etc), Tomcat continues listening on 8080 port.
If I send HTTP request to some endpoint, an application returns 404 NOT FOUND.
Is this expected behavior (should Tomcat continue listening)?

First Scenario
Application is up and running , the App Context is created and then some runtime exception occurs in the server and you want to do a graceful shutdown. In this scenario, you can use an utility like Spring boot Graceful shutdown
Scenario 2:
This is the scenario which occurs when Spring Boot is unable to create the Application context itself. Your scenario falls into this category. When application boots up, it tries to wire up the configurations from the application.properties and if there are any issues, the application context itself would not be created
Hence in this scenario , you cannot opt for a graceful shutdown as you don't have an instance of Application context. In such cases, you can catch the exception, choose appropriate logging and do a system exit manually

If I add Spring #ResourceMappings than I get data back but without Katharsis additions like "link", etc. It's as if the API call is not being picked up by Katharsis, but it's handled by Spring.
Any help would be appreciated.

Apparently the configured value for katharsis.pathPrefix was not correct. Web application's context-root is "/api" and the value of katharsis.pathPrefix should be only "/kat".
My next problem is that a RepositoryNotFoundException is being throw while handling the request, while the Resource class is found already.
I don't see your foo data service implementation anywhere. However, I am 99% sure you're not passing the json api accept type.

I solved the riddle by debugging the code and finding out that my Katharsis config was not correct. Katharsis only picked up the resource classes but not the resource repository classes. When I changed the katharsis.resourcePackage to a higher level where the resource repositories resided, the problem got solved and Katharsis picked up all related annotated classes.
I want to create test with in memory DB using Spring Boot 1.4.RELEASE. When I added anotation #DataJpaTest to the test and executed the test I'm getting following error:

I was expecting that this annotation will replace my real DB with in memory DB.
Resolved by adding dependency to in memory DB:
