unit testing spring boot with mockito - java

So i have searched all related questions here and found no answer that worked on mine. With that being said I am trying to unit test my spring-boot application with Mockito.
Here is my controller and the function i am trying to test.
#RestController
public class UserController {
#Autowired
UserRepository userRepository;
#GetMapping("/user")
public List<User> getAllUsers() {
return userRepository.findAll();
}
#GetMapping("/user/{id}")
public User getUser(#PathVariable Integer id) {
return userRepository.findById(id).get();
}
I am trying to test getUser function
here is my Test Controller
#RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class)
public class UserControllerTest {
private MockMvc mockMvc;
#MockBean
private UserController userController;
#Before
public void setUp() throws Exception {
mockMvc = MockMvcBuilders.standaloneSetup(userController).build();
}
#Test
public void getUserTest() throws Exception{
mockMvc.perform(get("/user/100").contentType(MediaType.APPLICATION_JSON))
.andDo(print())
.andExpect(status().isOk())
.andExpect(content().contentTypeCompatibleWith("application/json"))
.andExpect(jsonPath("$.role").value("deliverer"));
}
So firstly when I run this i get following error

with following data being printed
MockHttpServletResponse:
Status = 200
Error message = null
Headers = []
Content type = null
Body =
Forwarded URL = null
Redirected URL = null
Cookies = []
I have tested putting #ResponseBody in my Controller does not make any difference. I have also tested as stated in other post #RequestMapping(value="/user/{id}", method= RequestMethod.GET, produces = MediaType.APPLICATION_JSON_VALUE) that doesn't work either still get the same error.
If I dont have this check .andExpect(content().contentTypeCompatibleWith("application/json")) then i get the error stating java.lang.AssertionError: No value at JSON path "$.role"

I think you should be mocking the UserRepository and not the UserController.

How can I test IntegrationFlow with Jms.messageDrivenChannelAdapter

I tried to test IntegrationFlow which receives JMS message, then do some logic, send it to another JMS queue and then save it to the file.
I have such flow:
public class ProcessingFlow {
#Bean
public IntegrationFlow jmsProcessingFlow(
ActiveMQConnectionFactory activeMQConnectionFactory,
ValidationService validationService,
ConverterService converterService,
JmsMessageSender jmsMessageSender,
#Value("${folder.location}") String folderLocation) {
return IntegrationFlows.from(Jms.messageDrivenChannelAdapter(activeMQConnectionFactory).destination("JMSQueueFrom").id("jmsProcessing"))
.<String>handle((incomeFilePayload, messageHeaders) -> {
validationService.validate(incomeFilePayload);
String message = converterService.convert(incomeFilePayload);
jmsMessageSender.sendMessage("JMSQueueTo", message);
return incomeFilePayload;
})
.handle(Files.outboundAdapter(new File(folderLocation))
.fileNameGenerator("file.xml"))
.get();
}
}
I wrote such integration test:
#RunWith(SpringRunner.class)
#SpringIntegrationTest
#SpringBootTest(classes = {ProcessingFlowIntegrationTest.TestConfig.class})
#ActiveProfiles("test")
#DirtiesContext
public class ProcessingFlowIntegrationTest {
#MockBean
private ValidationService validationService;
#SpyBean
private ConverterService converterService;
#Autowired
private MockIntegrationContext mockIntegrationContext;
#After
public void tearDown() {
this.mockIntegrationContext.resetBeans();
}
#Test
public void shouldTestProcessingFlow() throws Exception {
TextMessage message = mock(TextMessage.class);
when(message.getText()).thenReturn(XmlContentEnum.CONTENT.getContent());
this.mockIntegrationContext.substituteMessageSourceFor("jmsProcessing", MockIntegration.mockMessageSource(message));
verify(validationService).validate(eq(message.getText()));
verify(converterService).convert(eq(message.getText()));
}
#TestConfiguration
#Import(value = {
ProcessingFlow.class,
JmsConfiguration.class,
TestConfig.class
})
static class TestConfig {
}
}
But after running I received such exception:

Does anybody know how can I test JmsMessageDrivenEndpoint correctly and what I did wrong?
Set noAutoStartup for the message-driven endpoint on the #SpringIntegrationTest.
Autowire the IntegrationFlow.
Then flow.getInputChannel().send(...);

java.lang.AssertionError: Content type not set - Spring Test and Mockito

my test return failed with error:
java.lang.AssertionError: Content type not set
I read that this error don't mean so much, because return the same if there is a NPE or don't match the handler ...
But i don't understand where is the error, seem to me all ok ...
My controller is already with #RestController
This is controller Method:
#RestController
#RequestMapping("/local")
public class ControllerTest{
.....
#RequestMapping(value = "/test", method = RequestMethod.GET)
#ResponseBody
public JsonResponse<TestResponseModel> test (
#RequestParam(value = "data1", required = true) String data1,
#RequestParam(value = "data2", required = true) String data2,
{
try {
TestRequestModel input= new TestRequestModel();
input.setData1(data1);
input.setData2(data2);
TestResponseModel entities = business.test(input);
return JsonResponse(entities);
} catch (TestException e) {
log.error("APPLICATION EXCEPTION", e);
throw e;
} catch (Exception e) {
log.error("UNHANDLED EXCEPTION", e);
throw new TestException(e);
}
}
}
and this is the test:
#Mock
private Business business;
#Mock
private TestResponseModel testResponseModel;
#Test
public void getTest() throws Exception {
when(business.test(isA(TestRequestModel.class))).thenReturn(testResponseModel);
mockMvc.perform(get("/local/test")
.requestAttr("data1", "data1_test")
.requestAttr("data2", "data2_test"))
.andDo(print())
.andExpect(status().isOk())
.andExpect(content().contentType("application/json"));
}

WrongTypeOfReturnValue error while unit testing

This line is wrong:
when(bookRepository.findById(book.getId()).orElse(null)).thenReturn(book);
orElse() isn't a method on your mock object, it's a method belonging to Optional... The line should be:
when(booRepository.findById(book.getId())).thenReturn(Optional.of(book));

This is my test class:
#RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class)
#WithUserDetails("user1")
public class RecipeControllerTest {
#Mock
private RecipeService recipeService;
#Mock
private CategoryService categoryService;
#Mock
private IngredientService ingredientService;
#Mock
private InstructionService instructionService;
#Mock
private UserService userService;
#InjectMocks
private RecipeController recipeController;
private MockMvc mockMvc;
#Before
public void setup() throws Exception {
InternalResourceViewResolver viewResolver = new InternalResourceViewResolver();
viewResolver.setPrefix("classpath:/templates/");
viewResolver.setSuffix(".html");
mockMvc = MockMvcBuilders.standaloneSetup(recipeController)
.setViewResolvers(viewResolver).build();
MockitoAnnotations.initMocks(this);
}
#Test
public void getIndex() throws Exception {
List<Category> categories = new ArrayList<>();
User user = new User();
Recipe recipe = recipeBuilder();
Recipe recipe2 = recipeBuilder();
List<Recipe> recipes = new ArrayList<>();
recipes.add(recipe);
recipes.add(recipe2);
when(userService.findByUsername("user1")).thenReturn(user);
when(recipeService.findAll()).thenReturn(recipes);
when(categoryService.findAll()).thenReturn(categories);
mockMvc.perform(MockMvcRequestBuilders.get("/"))
.andExpect(status().isOk())
.andExpect(view().name("login"));
}
}
and here is my custom UserDetailsService:
#Component
public class DetailsService implements UserDetailsService {
#Autowired
private UserService userService;
#Override
public UserDetails loadUserByUsername(String username) throws UsernameNotFoundException {
// Load user from database (throw exception if not found)
User user = userService.findByUsername(username);
if (user == null) {
throw new UsernameNotFoundException("User not found");
}
// Return user object
return new org.springframework.security.core.userdetails.User(
user.getUsername(),
user.getPassword(),
AuthorityUtils.createAuthorityList(user.getRoles())
);
}
}
I should mention the application has no issues finding this class when I run it normally, it's just the test class that has issues finding it.
Thanks in advance
Given you are using standaloneSetup you aren't loading an ApplicationContext thus no UserDetailsService bean exists. If you haven't already take a look at https://docs.spring.io/spring-security/site/docs/current/reference/htmlsingle/#test-mockmvc-securitycontextholder-rpp. You may also be interested in switching to MockMvcBuilders.webAppContextSetup

Mockito not working on update/create in RESTcontroller

I'm trying to write some tests using Mockito and I managed to write them for findAll and delete operations but for the create and update, they won't work.
#RunWith(MockitoJUnitRunner.class)
public class RentedControllerTest {
#Mock
private RentedService rentalService;
#Mock
private MovieService movieService;
#Mock
private ClientService clientService;
#InjectMocks
private RentedController rentalController;
#InjectMocks
private MovieController movieController;
#InjectMocks
private ClientController clientController;
#Before
public void setUp() throws Exception {
initMocks(this);
}
#Test
public void getMovies() throws Exception {
List<Movie> movies = new ArrayList<>();
movies.add(mock(Movie.class));
// System.out.println(movies.toString());
when(movieService.findAll()).thenReturn(movies);
//// System.out.println(movieService.findAll().toString());
MoviesDto response = movieController.getMovies();
assertEquals("should be 1 movie", 1, response.getMovies().size());
}
#Test
public void updateMovie() throws Exception {
Movie movie = new Movie(2,"Lotr",0, "dir2", 2003);
MovieDto movieDto = mock(MovieDto.class);
System.out.println(movie.toString());
when(movieService.updateMovie(anyInt(), anyString(), anyInt(), anyString(), anyInt())).thenReturn(movie);
// Movie m = new Movie();
// m = movieService.updateMovie(2,"Lotrrrrr",0, "dir2", 2003);
// System.out.println(m.toString());
Map<String, MovieDto> map = movieController.updateMovie(2, movieDto);
System.out.println(map.toString());
assertEquals("Title should be Lots", "Lotr", map.get("movie").getName());
}
#Test
public void createMovie() throws Exception {
Movie movie = new Movie(2,"Lotr",0, "dir2", 2003);
MovieDto movieDto = mock(MovieDto.class);
when(movieService.createMovie(anyInt(), anyString(), anyInt(), anyString(), anyInt())).thenReturn(movie);
Map<String, MovieDto> map = movieController.createMovie(movieDto);
assertEquals("Title should be Lotr", "Lotr", map.get("movie").getName());
}
#Test
public void deleteMovie() throws Exception {
ResponseEntity response = movieController.deleteMovie(1);
assertEquals("Http status should be OK", HttpStatus.OK, response.getStatusCode());
}
}
So the line "when(movieService.update....) work's just fine. I tested it with the write lines as you can see in the code and it works. The problem is here
Map<String, MovieDto> map = movieController.updateMovie(2, movieDto);
I gives me NullPointerException inside that method. The method looks like this:
#RequestMapping(value = "/movies/{movieId}", method = RequestMethod.PUT, consumes = CatalogMediaType.API_JSON)
public Map<String, MovieDto> updateMovie(#PathVariable final Integer movieId,
#RequestBody final MovieDto movieDto) {
log.trace("updateMovie: movieId={} movieDto={}", movieId, movieDto);
Movie movie = movieService.updateMovie(movieId, movieDto.getMovie().getName(), movieDto.getMovie().getNumberofrentals(), movieDto.getMovie().getDirector(), movieDto.getMovie().getYear());
Map<String, MovieDto> movieDtoMap = new HashMap<>();
movieDtoMap.put("movie", new MovieDto(movie));
log.trace("updateMovie: movieDtoMap={}", movieDtoMap);
return movieDtoMap;
}
The application itself works perfectly, the problem arises only when runing the mockito tests.

I don't really understand what the problem is if the findAll and delete work just fine... Any ideas?
I believe the mocking of MovieDto class is causing the NPE, as your controller is expecting a few params to be present in the DTO, which are not being set by the mock(), such as movieDto.getMovie().getName().
Create a MovieDto object from scratch with all the required params, or set the params post mocking, and you should be fine.
The following should work.
#Test
public void updateMovie() throws Exception {
Movie movie = new Movie(2,"Lotr",0, "dir2", 2003);
MovieDto movieDto = mock(MovieDto.class);
// Added the following line
movieDto.setMovie(movie);
System.out.println(movie.toString());
when(movieService.updateMovie(anyInt(), anyString(), anyInt(), anyString(), anyInt())).thenReturn(movie);
Map<String, MovieDto> map = movieController.updateMovie(2, movieDto);
System.out.println(map.toString());
assertEquals("Title should be Lots", "Lotr", map.get("movie").getName());
}
Looks like some dependency for the MovieController isn't getting set.
java.lang.NullPointerException
at ro.ubb.stcatalog.web.controller.MovieController.createMovie(MovieController.java:54)
You need to populate movieDto first. When you are doing get in the actual code its like you are doing get on a null which gives a NullPointer. And also Both values should be same. In when condition you are telling movieId as anyInt() and in the actual method call you are giving it as 2. That won't work. Both should be same as below.
when(movieService.updateMovie(**2**, anyString(), anyInt(), anyString(), anyInt())).thenReturn(movie);
Map<String, MovieDto> map = movieController.updateMovie(**2**, movieDto);
