I have an app that switches between two different activities (Main Activity with a simple text and Second Activity with two TextViews) in Android with different layouts every 10 seconds.
I want in Second Activity at the first time display only the first textView A, then return to the MainActivity and again lead to the Second Activity but display only the second textView B.
activity_second.xml:
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="255dp"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:orientation="horizontal">
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:background="#android:color/holo_purple"
android:orientation="horizontal">
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textView"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:gravity="center"
android:text="A"
android:textAppearance="#style/TextAppearance.AppCompat.Large"
android:textSize="65sp" />
</LinearLayout>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:background="#android:color/holo_orange_light"
android:orientation="horizontal">
<TextView
android:id="#+id/textViewB"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:gravity="center"
android:text="B"
android:textAppearance="#style/TextAppearance.AppCompat.Large"
android:textSize="65sp" />
</LinearLayout>
</LinearLayout>
And java code that switches between two Activities provided bellow.
Second_activity.java:
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.second_activity);
timer = new Timer();
timer.schedule(new TimerTask() {
#Override
public void run() {
Intent intent = new Intent(SecondActivity.this, MainActivity.class);
startActivity(intent);
finish();
}
}, 10000);
........
}
My problem is how to change the visibility of the two textViews for every time that switches between two activities.
To do it You can just pass a variable (if there are only 2 TextViews it can be boolean) to second activity. If it is true show 1st TextView if it is false show 2nd TextView.
To pass value with intent use this:
Boolean value = true; //set this if You want to show 1st or 2nd textbox
Intent i = new Intent(CurrentActivity.this, NewActivity.class);
i.putExtra("key", value);
startActivity(i);
To retrieve the value:
Bundle extras = getIntent().getExtras();
if (extras != null) {
Boolean value = extras.getBoolean("key");
//The key argument here must match that used in the other activity
}
When You have that value just set visibility of TextViews:
if (value)
{
textView1.setVisibility(TextView.VISIBLE);
textView2.setVisibility(TextView.GONE);
}
else
{
textView1.setVisibility(TextView.GONE);
textView2.setVisibility(TextView.VISIBLE);
}

I'm a beginner in android app making and I'm trying to do an app for a project. I found this tutorial and I'm currently trying to put to apps together in android studio. Both are reminders apps, however the second one (the food one), the FAB is not working it register the touch but when it does it says APP keeps stopping. If anybody can help me I'll appreciated.

You can not use applicationcontext in here, but if you want you need to add flags to the intent. So easier method for you to use "this" instead:
mCreateRem.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View view) {
Intent intent = new Intent(this, FoodAddReminder.class);
startActivity(intent);
//Starts the new activity to add Reminders
}
});
We can only "guess" why, but "not working" and "app keeps stopping" could mean a lot of things and you didn't provide any Log information or an Exception stacktrace. Its also hard to guess what FoodAddReminder.class is, if its an activity, make sure its declared in your AndroidManifest.xml
mCreateRem.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View view) {
Intent intent = new Intent(this, FoodAddReminder.class); // <-- is this an activity?
startActivity(intent);
//Starts the new activity to add Reminders
}
});
Check your AndroidManifest.xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<manifest xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
package="com.me.my.project">
<application >
<activity
android:name=".FoodAddReminder"/> <!-- here -->
</application>
</manifest>
If that is not the issue, I suspect that using getApplicationContext(), you're having this crash log
AndroidRuntimeException: Calling startActivity() from outside of an Activity context requires the FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK flag. Is this
really what you want?
You should then tell the system you want to start a new task,
public void onClick(View v) {
Intent intent = new Intent(getApplicationContext(), FoodAddReminder.class);
intent.setFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK);
startActivity(intent);
}
But I would suggest not doing it, instead use your FoodActivity as your calling activity to FoodReminder in this case, and pay attention to this, it should be prefixed with FoodActivity otherwise it will refer to its enclosing anonymous OnClickListener instance.
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
Intent intent = new Intent(FoodActivity.this, FoodAddReminder.class);
startActivity(intent);
}
If none of these solved your "not working" issue, please provide a more specific Log information and reduce your code to something that is copy-and-paste-able.
I made this mobile app that can add table rows after pressing a button. Each row contains an Edittext, four dropdown menus (spinners), and a button that deletes a row. Each row is like a duplicate after I press the button "add". Now, my only problem is how to save that specific content into firebase's real-time database or could firestore. Do you guys have recommendations of how to do this, any resources, or is this question is broad? I can specify some things you're confused.
I can save an edit text that holds the title for the document, and it successfully works, except the table rows because it holds multiple data types. I just heard that firebase can only hold primitive datatypes.
This is the code that is relevant to the problem, so I won't have to paste all 357 lines of code.

This is the method that makes the table rows.

Ignore the user part, that is only if the user is signed in.
This is how it runs
You need to add an Listener at the end of each spinner and store in in the variable for example:
Spinner Done = new Spinner(context);
Done.setAdapter(adapter);
Done.setOnItemSelectedListner(this)
tbr.addView(Done, 4);
Then store this variable Done using DatabaseReference
You don't actually want to save the rows, you want to save the underlying content.
Instead of thinking of the on-screen rows as the content itself, think of them as just displaying your underlying content. This underlying content can be backed up, modified, whatever you want, whilst the representation of it on screen can be completely reconstructed at any time.
To convert your code, I'd suggest the following series of steps:
Create something like a Task class, that has all the fields you want (e.g. name, team).
Store a list of Tasks in your current Activity / Fragment class, e.g. private List<Task> myTasks.
Write a method displayTasks that removes all existing rows from your layout, then iterates through myTasks and draws them all to the screen.
Change addNewRow so that it adds a new Task to myTasks, then calls displayTasks.
You now have a list of Tasks, which can be written directly into Cloud Firestore, and be retrieved later.
I'm fully aware this answer isn't the simple "just do x" you're after, but it's the answer you actually need! All of the steps are very simple, and of course feel free to modify them for your use case.
Once you're comfortable with the concept of "what's on screen isn't my data, just a representation of it", you may want to look into LiveData and ViewModel. They're trickier, but with a lot of benefits (explained within the links).
I'm new to Android and recently created a dashboard for my app. I followed a tutorial but it only covered the front end. I created a layout called content_main.xml with three Cardviews. Each of these Cardviews contains the code
android:clickable="true"
Beginning the back end of things, I created a java receiver class called DashboardActivity (as seen below). I want to make my Cardviews clickable so that when one is clicked, I am taken to another screen within my app. The other screens in my app I am trying to get to are fragments. Each of these screens has its own java class in my "Fragments" folder. One of them, of which I try calling on in the code that follows is called SettingsViewFragment().
So far, I have tried the following. It does nothing.
public class DashboardActivity extends AppCompatActivity {
CardView cd1, cd2, cd3;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.content_main);
cd1 = (CardView) findViewById(R.id.dash_settings);
cd2 = (CardView) findViewById(R.id.dash_profile);
cd3 = (CardView) findViewById(R.id.dash_activity);
cd1.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
Fragment fragment1 = new SettingsViewFragment();
}
});
}
}
UPDATE: FULL CODE
public class DashboardActivity extends AppCompatActivity {
CardView cd1, cd2, cd3;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.content_main);
cd1 = findViewById(R.id.dash_settings);
cd2 = findViewById(R.id.dash_profile);
cd3 = findViewById(R.id.dash_activity);
cd1.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
Log.i("Testing 123 123 123");
}
});
}
}
And my XML: (it continues for 3 cards this way)
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"

Replace
Fragment fragment1 = new SettingsViewFragment();
With this
Fragment fragment1 = new SettingsViewFragment();
FragmentTransaction fragmentTransaction=getFragmentManager().beginTransaction();
fragmentTransaction.replace(R.id.Main_Layout,fragment1);
fragmentTransaction.addToBackStack(null);
fragmentTransaction.commit();
Change Fragment fragment1 = new SettingsViewFragment (); by Toast.makeText (mActivity, "onCLick", Toast.LENGTH_LONG) .show ();
//if show toast The problem is not the onClick, the problem is when loading the fragment
Fragments should be instantiated with the newInstance() static method.
cd1.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
#Override
public void onClick(View v) {
Fragment settingsFragment = SettingsFragment.newInstance();
FragmentTransaction transaction = getSupportFragmentManager().beginTransaction();
fragmentTransaction.replace(R.id.contentView, settingsFragment);
fragmentTransaction.commit();
}
});
In the SettingsFragment
public static SettingsFragment newInstance() {
return new SettingsFragment();
}

This will transact the fragment into the FrameLayout that is positioned below the CardViews. Now this is probably not ideal, you would most likely want to launch a new activity that will host the fragment but this should work. Unless this is already in some Activity that hosts the fragment. But the key code is in the onClick.
I am setting a repeated alarm in the Android, which fires the activity.
This activity is having two buttons: "stop" and "snooze". When I click on "snooze" alarm is postponed to 10 minutes.
But the alarm is in slider window, i.e it is in onresume state.
I want to stop the alarm completely on both the buttons.
public class RingAlarm extends Activity {
MediaPlayer mp;
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_ring_alarm);
Intent in;
in = getIntent();
String s=in.getStringExtra("habbit_id");
int col= in.getIntExtra("habbit_Color",0);
ScrollView sv = (ScrollView)findViewById(R.id.sv_ra);
if(col<0)
{
sv.setBackgroundResource(R.color.red);
}
if(col>0) {
sv.setBackgroundResource(R.color.green);
}
if(col==0)
{
sv.setBackgroundResource(R.color.yellow);
}
System.out.println("alarm string" + s);
TextView tv = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.habbit_ra);
tv.setText(s);
// mp = MediaPlayer.create(getApplicationContext(), R.raw.song1);
//mp.start();
}
public void onthecancelringclicked(View view){
//mp.stop();
int id=Process.myPid();
finish();
Process.killProcess(id);
//System.exit(0);
}
public void onthesnoozeringclicked(View view){
//mp.stop();
long l=System.currentTimeMillis();
Intent i = this.getIntent();
Random r = new Random();
int ri =r.nextInt(1000000)+64;
PendingIntent pi = PendingIntent.getActivity(this,ri,i,0 );
AlarmManager am = (AlarmManager)this.getSystemService(Context.ALARM_SERVICE);
am.set(AlarmManager.RTC_WAKEUP,l+600000,pi);
finish();
Process.killProcess(Process.myPid());
}
}
And my XML file is:

As you can see I have implemented Process.killProcess(pid) method. Still my alarm is getting saved into the navigation drawer. I want to remove the activity from everywhere.
i am using same intent for 32 alarms so i can not put the id of the pending intent to the intent as putExtra.
Hopefully this will give you an idea of how to cancel/stop the alarm:
Intent intent = new Intent(context, MyClass.class);
PendingIntent recurring = PendingIntent.getBroadcast(context, 0, intent, PendingIntent.FLAG_CANCEL_CURRENT);
AlarmManager alarms = (AlarmManager) context.getSystemService(Context.ALARM_SERVICE);
if(active) { //If alarm is active
alarms.cancel(recurring);
recurring.cancel();
} else {
// Do something..
}
I copied it from one of my projects and it works for me.
add the following lines in the entry of the activity that is fired in the menifest file.
android:excludeFromRecents="true"
this will not let the activity go into recents and calling finish will lead to end of the activity.
I am trying to set the text of my EditText, but I am getting a null pointer exception. I have seen other posts answering this question, however I am extending ActionBarActivity so I can not simply solve this problem by using something like EditText f1 = (EditText) getActivity().findViewById(R.id.field1);
public class SwitchURL extends ActionBarActivity {
#Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_switch_url);
Intent intent = getIntent();
getActionBar().setDisplayHomeAsUpEnabled(true);
EditText f1 = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.field1);
EditText f2 = (EditText)findViewById(R.id.field2);
SharedPreferences pref1 = getSharedPreferences("textField1", 0);
SharedPreferences pref2 = getSharedPreferences("textField1", 0);
Log.v("", pref1.getString("textField1", "DNE"));
Log.v("", pref2.getString("textField2", "DNE"));
f1.setText("hello", TextView.BufferType.EDITABLE);
if (savedInstanceState == null) {
getSupportFragmentManager().beginTransaction()
.add(R.id.container, new PlaceholderFragment()).commit();
}
}
I know I am getting the NullPointerException because I am not accessing the right view that contains this editText. I have a method that is called when a button is clicked and it works fine.
public void changeUrl(View v) {
EditText f1 = (EditText)findViewById(R.id.field1);
EditText f2 = (EditText)findViewById(R.id.field2);
SharedPreferences pref1 = getSharedPreferences("textField1", 0);
SharedPreferences pref2 = getSharedPreferences("textField1", 0);
SharedPreferences.Editor edit1 = pref1.edit();
SharedPreferences.Editor edit2 = pref2.edit();
edit1.putString("textField1", f1.getText().toString());
edit2.putString("textField2", f2.getText().toString());
edit1.commit();
edit2.commit();
Log.v("", pref1.getString("textField1", "Fail"));
Log.v("", pref2.getString("textField2", "Fail"));
}
Any idea how I can access this view so that I can set the text of my editText? Here is the xml:

If the EditText is inside of a Fragment, then when your Activity is created the Fragment has not been created yet and has not had it's Views inflated yet. Attempting to access any of its Views at this time with findViewById() will return null.
Your code for accessing Views of the Fragment belongs in onCreateView or in onViewCreated of the Fragment class itself, not inside of onCreate of the Activity. You should also put all of your logic in the Fragment, so that you can better modularize your code.
This looks like you are trying to access views defined in the fragment's layout from within the activity. The activity doesn't know about the fragment layout at creation. Move your code which is getting the views and managing their content into the fragment's onCreatView().
